Day 4: Stumps - Bangladesh trail by 107 runs

Bangladesh will lose unless Mushfiqur and Liton do something special

An exciting final day is on the cards after Sri Lanka took a stranglehold of the game against Bangladesh on the fourth day in Dhaka.

The twin tons from the two experienced batters gave Sri Lanka a massive lead of 141. The bowlers then did significant damage in the final hour of play as Bangladesh limped in at 34/4 at stumps, trailing by 107 runs.

Resuming the day at 282/5, still 83 behind Bangladesh, Mathews and Chandimal started positively, smashing two boundaries and a six in the opening five overs.

Their approach became a lot more cautious thereafter, but despite that, they ensured the runs didn't dry up, constantly rotating the strike and putting away the occasional boundary.

Chandimal brought up his fifty at the stroke of lunch, and the two batters went unscathed into the break having added 87 runs to the overnight score, giving Sri Lanka a slender lead of four runs.

They carried on after the break. Mathews was extremely watchful in his 90s, taking 27 balls to go from 93 to his second century of the series. He was saved by the DRS twice on either side of his century – he was given caught behind on 94 but replays showed that there was no edge. The umpire raised his finger again when Mathews was on 105 and he looked trapped plumb in front, but snicko came to his rescue, showing a clear spike as the ball passed the bat.

At the other end, Chandimal, who took 118 balls to get to his half-century, was a lot more aggressive after the milestone. His next 50 runs came in just 63 balls as he brought up his 12th Test ton.

It was a toil for the Bangladesh bowlers on a pitch that did not offer anything for the pacers and very little spin early on, despite it being a day four wicket. Mathews and Chandimal ploughed away through the second session, milking singles and doubles while also finding boundaries when given the chance. Sri Lanka went into Tea on 459/5, leading the hosts by 94 runs.

The Tigers finally broke through in the second over of the final session, with Ebadot Hossain deceiving Chandimal (124) with the slower delivery. One brought two as Shakib Al Hasan struck at the other end, dismissing Niroshan Dickwella for 9.

The boundaries were coming thick and fast for Sri Lanka but they also kept losing wickets. Hossain trapped Ramesh Mendis for 10 before Shakib completed his 19th Test five-wicket haul in the very next over by snaring Praveen Jayawickrama.

Asitha Fernando was the last to fall, run-out at the non-striker's end trying to keep Mathews on strike, who was left stranded on 145*.

Bangladesh had a tricky hour to see off before stumps, and endured a horror start to their second innings when Tamim Iqbal fell for a duck, collecting a pair in the match.

Two overs later, a direct hit from Jayawickrama sent Najmul Hossain Shanto back to the hut. Mominul Haque followed him back in the very next over for a duck, with DRS coming to Sri Lanka's aid.

Fernando produced a belter of a delivery that had Mahmudul Hasan fending, leaving Kusal Mendis with a simple catch at slip. Bangladesh were reduced to 23/4 before Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das ensured there was no further damage.

They have it all to do on the final day.

Sri Lanka slowly letting the game slip away again. They had so many chances of burying Bangladesh this game, but their bowling just cannot close things out by the looks of it.

Still in with a good chance though.

Some signs of life by Bangladesh and excellent partnership in progress between Liton Das and Shakib

Bangladesh's issue seems to be a lack of confidence. Guys like Tamim, Mominul, Mushfiqur, etc should've learned how to handle tough situations by now.

The Mominul situation is ridiculous, 24 runs in last 7 innings and then 14 in 4 against Pakistan end of last year. Ok so was a great win in NZ and he had that one good game as a player but shouldn’t be in the team with those numbers let alone captain which he is for the forthcoming WI tour

Asitha Fernando led Sri Lanka's attack on the final day with a Player of the Match performance, his brilliant six-for guiding his side to a 10-wicket win against Bangladesh, helping secure crucial ICC World Test Championship points.

Sri Lanka moved up one spot to No.4 in the ICC World Test Championship standings, going past Pakistan, after gaining 12 crucial points. Meanwhile, the defeat left Bangladesh rooted to the No.8 spot, with their percentage points reducing from 19.05 to 16.67.

Asitha starred with the ball for Sri Lanka, claiming six wickets in his second outing. He became only the second pacer from his country to have claimed 10 wickets in an away Test after Chaminda Vaas achieved the feat in 1995 against New Zealand in Napier.

On the penultimate day, a solid partnership between Angelo Mathews (145*) and Dinesh Chandimal (124) had helped Sri Lanka take a considerable lead before their bowlers wreaked havoc in the final session to reduce Bangladesh to 34/4, the home side going into stumps trailing by 107 runs.

On the fifth morning, Bangladesh resumed under significant pressure. Their task was to bat through the day and battle to a draw, with the onus on the experienced duo of Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim, the overnight pair.

ICC World Test Championship standings
Sri Lanka, however, had different ideas. Kasun Rajitha dismissed Mushfiqur for 23 early on the final morning, and the hosts had half their side back in the pavilion and were still trailing by 88 runs.

Bangladesh desperately needed a partnership, and to their rescue came Shakib Al Hasan, who managed to steady the ship alongside Liton. The Sri Lankan bowlers were denied another wicket in the first session.

The duo stitched together an unbeaten 96-run partnership by lunch, which helped Bangladesh take a slim lead of eight runs with Shakib on 52* and Das on 48*.

After the break, Das completed his half-century, but soon lost his wicket to Asitha. His dismissal for 52 triggered a collapse, and Asitha continued his assault. He had Shakib dismissed shortly thereafter on 58, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 163/7.

The Bangladesh lower order offered poor resistance. The hosts lost their last five wickets for just 13 runs, ending their innings on 169, setting Sri Lanka a mere 29 runs to chase.

Sri Lanka's openers chased down the target in just three overs, securing a 10-wicket victory and the series 1-0.

Earlier in the match, Bangladesh opted to bat first but the decision seemed to have backfired when Bangladesh were reduced to 24/5. However, twin tons from Das (141) and Mushfiqur Rahim (175*) scripted a brilliant turnaround as they helped Bangladesh end the day’s play at 277/5. Bangladesh then extended their score and ended their first innings at 365. Sri Lanka's Kasun Rajitha recorded his best bowling figures of 5/64, his first five-for in Tests.

In reply, Sri Lanka started strong, with the openers Oshada Fernando (57) and Dimuth Karunaratne (80) notching up half-centuries. Mathews and Chandimal scored brilliant centuries, helping Sri Lanka end their first innings on the following day at 506. Shakib remained the highest wicket-taker for Bangladesh, picking up 5/96.

Outstanding effort from Asitha Fernando. On surfaces where there is not much happening, its the fast bowlers that have to put in that extra effort to try and force a win and Asitha was able to do that. He has become only the 2nd Srilankan pacer in in the history to get a 10wkt haul in a test match.

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo mentioned that the tailor-made pitches in the past at home has hurt the Tigers' improvement in the long run and the South African also urged to create sporting pitches to enhance performance in the longest format of the game.

Under former head coach Chandika Hathurusingha, the Bangladesh team management opted the strategy to subdue the opponents with rank-turner surfaces, through which Bangladesh went on to register victories over England and Australia for the first time at home.

Bangladesh had lost the second Test by 10 wickets against Sri Lanka to eventually lose the series, however, the Mirpur surface remained sporting for both the batters and bowlers till the fifth and final day of the Test match.

"It might help you in a one-off Test match, but it's not going to help in the long-run development of the Test team," Domingo said in the post-match conference today.

"With all due respect to past Tests, those may have hurt us going forward. When we get on good pitches, and I'm a big advocate of playing on good pitches, we come second. If we feel that we have to doctor pitches, then we have no chance away from home. These two were good pitches," he continued.

"The reason they are not [playing well], is that they are so used to playing on bad pitches. Playing on good pitches will mean better development in the long run. I know everyone wants to win. I know a quick fix is them getting 100, we getting 110. But the team is not going to get better that way. It is a Catch-22 situation."

Despite reeling on 24 for 5, Bangladesh went on to post 365 runs in the first innings, courtesy of Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim's hundreds. There was something for the seamers and the spinners with Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando bagging ten wickets in the game while Shakib Al Hasan registered his 19th five-wicket haul with his wily left-arm spin.

According to Domingo, there were no complaints over the pitches in both Chattogram and Dhaka in the two-match Test series.

"It was a very good pitch for batting and bowling. A fast bowler got 10 wickets in the game, Shakib got five wickets. We can't complain about the wicket. These are the types of pitches where your skills improve."

Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo said that it is not possible to win Tests after suffering horrible batting collapses as the Tigers did in the recently-concluded home Test series against Sri Lanka.

"We have got to do something different," said Domingo in the post-match press conference following Sri Lanka's 10-wicket win over Bangladesh on the final day of the second Test in Mirpur today.

Bangladesh suffered top-order collapses in both the innings in their series-deciding Test against Sri Lanka. The Tigers were reduced to 24 for five inside seven overs in the first innings but were fortunately saved by the heroics of Mushfiqur Rahim and Liton Das -- both of whom struck hundreds and stitched a record stand to pull Bangladesh out of a deep hole.

In the second innings as well, the Tigers' top-order suffered the same fate. At one point, they were reeling at four for 23 and looking at an innings-defeat. But a hundred-run stand between Liton and Shakib Al Hasan saved the Tigers from utter humiliation but still could not avert a heavy thumping by Sri Lanka, who cinched the two-match series 1-0.

Building on what he said regarding 'doing something different', Domingo hinted that there might be changes in the batting order in the Tigers' upcoming multi-format tour of the West Indies next month.

"It means there could be changes in the order or we will change one or two things. In both the innings [in the second Test against Sri Lanka], we were 24 for four and 24 for five in the first innings. We are not going to win Test matches from those positions. We have got to change something.

"It happened too many times in the last six to eight months. And if that means we have to change the order and look for one or two new options, we possibly have to do that going forward," added Domingo.

Bangladesh have already announced squads for all three formats for their upcoming tour of the Caribbean, where the Tigers are scheduled to play two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is. With Mushfiqur Rahim opting out of the tour for performing the Hajj pilgrimage, a few changes in the batting order are set to be made in the West Indies tour.

Bangladesh were bundled out for under 100 three times in their last seven Tests. Domingo realised that it is a recurring problem for the Tigers and vowed to do something different in the upcoming series.

"Like we did before going to New Zealand, we are going to have to prepare really well [for the tour of the West Indies]. We need to be willing to leave balls and be very patient and go back to old-fashioned Test match batting. We need to do something different and take a look at the batting order. Because if we do the same thing, we will get the same result," Domingo added.

Bangladesh captain Mominul Haque said that his side needs to be mentally strong even after losing against Sri Lanka by 10 wickets, in the second test on Friday. Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh in the second Test of the two-match series, at Shere Bangla stadium in Mirpur. "It's all about the mental thing, need to be mentally strong if we're to come back in the next series. We have to look after our bowlers, especially the pacers," said Mominul in a post-match presentation.

Further, the left-handed batter praised Litton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim for their brilliant partnership of 272 runs for the 6th wicket which helped Bangladesh put up a good score of 365 runs in the first innings.

"A disappointing performance, have to work hard. But there were some positives, Rahim and Litton batted really well. They put us under pressure with the new ball, we'll have to handle it better next time," he added.

Coming to the match, Bangladesh won the toss and opt to bat first. Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das were the highest run-getter in the first innings. They scored 175 and 141 respectively with the partnership of 272 runs at the 6th wicket. Shakib Al Hasan scalped a five-wicket haul while bowling in the first innings Ebadot Hossain took four wickets.

In return, SL batters scored 506 runs and took the lead of 141 runs. Angelo Mathews scored 145 runs and Dinesh Chandimal scored 124 runs. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne gave a good start and 80 runs with his opening partner Oshada Fernando who scored 57 runs. Kasun Rajitha took a five-wicket haul for SL and Asitha Fernando took four wickets.

Later in the second innings, Bangladesh scored 169 runs and got all out. Litton das scored 52 runs and Shakib Al Hasan scored 58 runs.

Sri Lankan batters easily chased down the target of 29 runs in mere three overs with Oshada Fernando scoring 21 out of it.
