Joe Root and Harry Brook produced centuries of completely different styles, yet equal quality, as England defeated Sri Lanka by 53 runs to seal a one-day international series victory.
After a cautious beginning, Root anchored the innings with trademark composure, bringing up his 20th ODI hundred while adding 126 with Jacob Bethell. Brook joined him in the 32nd over and, as Root reached a fluent run-a-ball century, the England captain unleashed a breathtaking assault. Brook raced to his hundred in just 57 balls, and the unbeaten partnership of 191 powered England to 357 for 3 — their highest-ever ODI total in Sri Lanka. Brook finished with a career-best 136, while Root remained unbeaten on 111.
Brook marked his century with a celebration inspired by WWE star Steve “Stone Cold” Austin, mimicking the wrestler’s famous beer-can smash — a nod that drew attention given Brook’s fine last year following an off-field incident in New Zealand.
Sri Lanka’s reply began explosively, with 104 runs scored in the powerplay despite losing three wickets. Pathum Nissanka blazed his way to 50 from just 24 balls before holing out in the deep, allowing England to slowly rein in the chase. Although the Colombo pitch was far better for batting than in the first two low-scoring matches, it gradually slowed and offered increasing turn.
Pavan Rathnayake carried Sri Lanka’s hopes with an impressive maiden international century, striking 121 from 104 deliveries. His innings mirrored Root’s control, but Sri Lanka lacked a Brook-style counterpunch. With wickets falling around him, Rathnayake tried to accelerate after reaching three figures, only to be the final man dismissed, bowled by Sam Curran in the 47th over.
The win ends Sri Lanka’s 12-series unbeaten streak at home in ODIs and eases England’s concerns about needing to qualify for the 2027 World Cup.
