England tour of Sri Lanka (2026)

Just seen scorecard.

They sent Rehan as opener and he barely bowled. I thought he would be the opposite

SL conceded too many. Even 330 was gettable against this England bowling attack. But then again, not everyday you see someone smoke 136 off 60 odd balls

Joe Root and Harry Brook produced centuries of completely different styles, yet equal quality, as England defeated Sri Lanka by 53 runs to seal a one-day international series victory.

After a cautious beginning, Root anchored the innings with trademark composure, bringing up his 20th ODI hundred while adding 126 with Jacob Bethell. Brook joined him in the 32nd over and, as Root reached a fluent run-a-ball century, the England captain unleashed a breathtaking assault. Brook raced to his hundred in just 57 balls, and the unbeaten partnership of 191 powered England to 357 for 3 — their highest-ever ODI total in Sri Lanka. Brook finished with a career-best 136, while Root remained unbeaten on 111.

Brook marked his century with a celebration inspired by WWE star Steve “Stone Cold” Austin, mimicking the wrestler’s famous beer-can smash — a nod that drew attention given Brook’s fine last year following an off-field incident in New Zealand.

Sri Lanka’s reply began explosively, with 104 runs scored in the powerplay despite losing three wickets. Pathum Nissanka blazed his way to 50 from just 24 balls before holing out in the deep, allowing England to slowly rein in the chase. Although the Colombo pitch was far better for batting than in the first two low-scoring matches, it gradually slowed and offered increasing turn.

Pavan Rathnayake carried Sri Lanka’s hopes with an impressive maiden international century, striking 121 from 104 deliveries. His innings mirrored Root’s control, but Sri Lanka lacked a Brook-style counterpunch. With wickets falling around him, Rathnayake tried to accelerate after reaching three figures, only to be the final man dismissed, bowled by Sam Curran in the 47th over.

The win ends Sri Lanka’s 12-series unbeaten streak at home in ODIs and eases England’s concerns about needing to qualify for the 2027 World Cup.

Archer named in England side for first T20

Fast bowler Jofra Archer has been named in England's team to face Sri Lanka in the first T20 match after recovering from injury.

The 30-year-old missed the final two Tests of England's 4-1 Ashes defeat with a side strain and was not initially named in the squad for the three-match T20 series.

He was expected to make his return at the T20 World Cup next month but is in the XI for Friday's match in Kandy.

Opener Ben Duckett misses out with a bruised finger so Jos Buttler will open the batting on his record-equalling 401st appearance in an England shirt.

England beat Sri Lanka by 53 runs to clinch a one-day international series win on Tuesday.

England team to face Sri Lanka in first T20: Phil Salt, Jos Buttler (wicketkeeper), Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton, Harry Brook (captain), Sam Curran, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Liam Dawson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid.

Sam Curran took England's second ever hat-trick in T20 internationals as they beat Sri Lanka by 11 runs (DLS) in Pallekele.

The left-arm seamer dismissed home captain Dasun Shanaka and lower-order batters Maheesh Theekshana and Matheesha Pathirana as Sri Lanka were dismissed for 133.

The hosts had already lost five wickets for 22 runs after spinners Adil Rashid and Liam Dawson tore through their line-up, taking 3-19 and 2-31 respectively.

Curran had been expensive earlier in the innings, conceding 36 runs from his first two overs, but returned in force before Jamie Overton wrapped up the innings, which had been shortened to 17 overs after rain earlier in the day.

Having won the preceding ODI series 2-1, England were looking to take their form into the shortest format as they build up to the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka next month.

They looked comfortable in their reply, with Phil Salt hitting 46 from 35 balls at the top of the order.

Jos Buttler was bowled by Eshan Malinga in the third over after hitting the seamer for four successive fours, and the same bowler removed Jacob Bethell for nine.

Tom Banton hit back-to-back sixes off Wanindu Hasaranga, but was caught superbly in the covers by Charith Asalanka off Parithana, while Salt chipped Shanaka to long-on with the finish in sight.

The rain returned two balls later with England needing nine from 12 deliveries and the umpires swiftly drew a conclusion to proceedings.

England go 1-0 up in the three-match series, with the next game at the same ground on Sunday.

Tom Banton whacked an unbeaten half-century as England pulled off a brilliant DLS chase to beat Sri Lanka by six wickets in the second T20 international.

The players had gone off for rain with England 57-2 off 7.2 overs - Phil Salt and Jacob Bethell the batters out - and when they returned the tourists were set a revised DLS target of 168 off 17 overs.

Jos Buttler laid the platform with a 29-ball 39 but Harry Brook truly gave England belief during a brutal and breathtaking cameo in Pallekele.

Brook spanked four sixes during a knock of 36 off 12 balls as he seized the initiative only to be caught scooping the slingy Matheesha Pathirana.

With 38 runs off 33 balls required, Banton played with calculated aggression en route to 54 not out off 33 balls to put England on the brink of victory.

The match went down to the final over but Sam Curran duly whacked Janith Liyanage for six to wrap up the win with two balls to spare.

Sri Lanka had earlier posted a competitive 189-5 after being inserted by England as Pavan Rathnayake top scored with 40 off 22 balls.

Pathum Nissanka had set the tone after he and fellow opener Kamil Mishara hammered 35 off the first two overs of the match.

However, England's spinners stymied the hosts' attacking intent with controlled spells through the middle overs as Adil Rashid, Liam Dawson and Will Jacks all picked up a wicket apiece.

Jofra Archer claimed 2-42 but fellow seamers Jamie Overton and Curran were both expensive and wicketless.

England's victory ensured they clinched the series 2-0 with one match left to play before their opening game of the T20 World Cup against Nepal on 8 February.

Concerning signs for SL.

I wouldn't be surprised if Zimbabwe beat them in the WC. SL are looking pretty demoralized.

Lanka may pull the rabbit out of hat , if they can prepare ultra flat tracks to disturb every equation

England 55/5 in 8.4 overs in 3rd T20I atm. SL are bowling some lethal deliveries

England successfully defended a target of 129 to win by 12 runs against Sri Lanka in an enthralling contest, completing a 3-0 T20 series sweep and entering the World Cup with momentum.

Sam Curran hit a career-best 58 after a top-order collapse as England finished on 128-9, before the tourists' spinners took nine wickets to pull off an unlikely victory.

Will Jacks took 3-14, while Jacob Bethell secured the last four Sri Lankan wickets, including three in one over, to finish with 4-11 as the hosts were bowled out for 116.

Having chosen to bat, opener Ben Duckett was dismissed lbw for a golden duck, while Jacob Bethell, Tom Banton and Harry Brook were all removed for single figures prior to Curran taking his side to a score that still looked challenging to defend.

Having already lost the series with defeat in its first two games, Sri Lanka bowled superbly, with seamer Dushmantha Chameera taking 5-24, including the wicket of Curran with the penultimate ball of the innings.

Luke Wood and Liam Dawson took early wickets on a worn pitch, before Kusal Mendis and Pavan Rathnayake fell to consecutive deliveries from Adil Rashid and Jacks.

Sri Lanka were still favourites and reached 90-4 before Jacks struck again, removing Kamindu Mendis and Janith Liyanage in consecutive overs.

Part-time spinner Jacob Bethell then took control, dismissing Dunith Wellalage, Chameera and Dasun Shanaka in the 18th over.

Having been handed the final over, he wrapped up the match with the dismissal of Maheesh Theekshana, helping England set a record for the lowest total they have ever successfully defended in T20s.
