This is a series that's gone under the radar amidst the India-England and Australia-Pakistan series.

Sri Lanka's batsmen seem to have found form in the warm-up in Potchefstroom, seven out of eight batsmen on tour struck half-centuries.

The pitch in Port Elizabeth may suit Sri Lanka more as there's less pace and bounce compared to other SA venues. The curator thinks the spinners will come into the match should it go to Day 4 and 5. Since readmission, South Africa have won six, lost 4 and drawn 4 at this ground.

The previous Sri Lankan tour of South Africa was in 2011, and South Africa won the series 2-1.

Sri Lanka squad: Angelo Mathews (c), Vikum Sanjaya, Dushmantha Chameera, Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Nuwan Pradeep, Rangana Herath, Dimuth Karunaratne, Lahiru Kumara, Suranga Lakmal, Kusal Mendis, Dilruwan Perera, Kusal Perera, Kaushal Silva and Upul Tharanga.

South Africa squad: Faf du Plessis (capt), Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Temba Bavuma, Stephen Cook, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Dean Elgar, Keshav Maharaj, Wayne Parnell, Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada.

First Test is between Dec 26-30 in Port Elizabeth.
Second Test is between Jan 2-6 in Cape Town.
Third Test is between Jan 12-16 in Johannesburg.

Sri Lanka will miss Dhammika Prasad but good to see young pacer Dushmantha Chameera back.

Actually kind of excited for this series, 2 of my favorite teams, hopefully Lankans can give a fight.

Farhaan Behardien to lead South Africa for the first 2 matches in the IT20 Series against Sri Lanka

FARHAAN BEHARDIEN has been appointed as stand-in captain of the Standard Bank Proteas for the first two matches in the KFC T20 International Series against Sri Lanka.

Cricket South Africa (CSA) today named a 13-man squad that includes six new caps in this format – Jon-Jon Smuts, Theunis de Bruyn, Mangaliso Mosehle, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dane Paterson and Lungi Ngidi.

“We have decided to rest some of our key senior players for this series,” commented CSA Selection Convener, Linda Zondi. “This is the last chance we have to do this as the Momentum ODI series that follows is an important part of our build-up to the ICC Champions Trophy Tournament in England in the middle of the year.

“Those senior players who are involved in the Indian Premier League will be playing non-stop from now until the end of August with the tours coming up to New Zealand and England in addition to the ICC event.

“Farhaan was one of the standout players in our franchise T20 Challenge, being the second leading runs scorer behind Jon-Jon Smuts and having the best strike rate.

“David Wiese was one of our original selections but he has informed us that he intends to take up a Kolpak contract and has therefore been withdrawn from the squad.

“Both AB de Villiers and Morne Morkel are due to resume playing at domestic level later this month and could come into contention for the third T20,” added Zondi.

Standard Bank Proteas squad: Farhaan Behardien (Multiply Titans, capt), Theunis de Bruyn (VKB Knights), Reeza Hendricks (bizhub Highveld Lions), Imran Tahir (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Heino Kuhn (Multiply Titans), David Miller (VKB Knights), Mangaliso Mosehle (bizhub Highveld Lions), Lungi Ngidi (Multiply Titans), Wayne Parnell (BuildNat Cape Cobras), Dane Paterson (BuildNat Cape Cobras), Aaron Phangiso (bizhub Highveld Lions), Andile Phehlukwayo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Jon-Jon Smuts (Warriors).

KFC T20 International Schedule:

  • Friday, 20 January 2017: 1st KFC International, SuperSport Park, 18h00
  • Sunday, 22 January 2017: 2nd KFC International, Bidvest Wanderers, 14h30
  • Wednesday, 25 January 2017: 3rd KFC International, PPC Newlands, 18h00

DE VILLIERS, MORRIS RETURN TO PROTEAS ODI SQUAD; NGIDI GETS FIRST CALL-UP

Monday, 23 January 2017

AB DE VILLIERS returns as player and captain to the Standard Bank Proteas squad for the five-match Momentum ODI Series against Sri Lanka. Chris Morris, who also missed the famous clean-sweep series against Australia last year, also returns to the squad after injury.

This is the first time the duo has been in action in ODI cricket since the tri-series against the West Indies and Australia in the middle of last year.

Fast bowlers Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel could not be considered because of injury while fellow fast bowler Lungi Ngidi is in line to win his first cap in this format.

“We have chosen this squad for the first three games only,” commented Cricket South Africa (CSA) selection convener, Linda Zondi. “It is wonderful to have AB back available both as player and leader. We are entering a very important phase of our preparation for the Champions Trophy Tournament in England as we only have 10 games left – the five here against Sri Lanka and another five in New Zealand – before we head for another major ICC event.

“The ODI squad is in very good space at the moment after the clean sweep over Australia, but Sri Lanka will pose another stiff challenge.

“Ngidi has been rewarded for his excellent form in the current KFC T20 International Series and we are keen to see how he goes in the 50 overs format. He has not only impressed with the wickets he has taken and the skills he has displayed but with the energy and intensity he has brought to his game as well.

”The emergence of players such as Ngidi, Andile Phehlukwayo, Tabraiz Shamsi, Kesh Maharaj and Dwaine Pretorius show just how well our development pipeline and our franchise system is working,” concluded Zondi.

Standard Bank Proteas ODI squad: AB de Villiers (Multiply Titans, capt), Hashim Amla (BuildNat Cape Cobras), Farhaan Behardien (Multiply Titans), Quinton de Kock (Multiply Titans), JP Duminy (BuildNat Cape Cobras), Faf du Plessis (Multiply Titans), Imran Tahir (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), David Miller (VKB Knights), Chris Morris (Multiply Titans), Wayne Parnell (BuildNat Cape Cobras), Lungi Ngidi (Multiply Titans), Andile Phehlukwayo (Hollywoodbets Dolphins), Dwaine Pretorius (bizhub Highveld Lions), Kagiso Rabada (bizhub Highveld Lions), Tabraiz Shamsi (Multiply Titans)

Upul Tharanga to lead Sri Lanka in ODIs against South Africa 2017

Upul Tharanga, Sri Lanka’s 31-year-old batting talisman has been chosen to captain the country’s five One Day International matches against South Africa starting in Port Elizabeth this Saturday (28).

The left-hand-batsman will captain the ODI series in South Africa in the absence of Angelo Mathews who returned home this week. Mathews had informed the management of Sri Lanka Cricket that he may need to take time off to be with his family. A hamstring injury on the 2nd T- 20 on Sunday ruled him out of the match forcing the skipper to make an early exit for the rest of the series. Both Nuwan Pradeep and Dhanushka Gunathilaka also returned to Sri Lanka on Tuesday owing to their injuries.

Meanwhile the Selectors have nominated the following players to join the squad in South Africa.

Srilanka set for a new beginning i guess, making necessary changes keeping in mind CT2017..

Very eager to watch Upul Tharanga's captaincy and where he bats as a captain...

That was sarcasm but I just realized he is the same age as Azhar Ali..

doesnt matter he is more experienced than Azhar ali in ODIs... he was the opening partner for Jayasuriya and Atapattu once before and scored a quite few tons as opener. he fades off after dilshan broke the shackles and made a mark as an opener

Yes and played one of the greatest knocks ever at the grandest stage of them all. The 2011 World Cup final

Tharanga seriously got to be kidding me :))

Since I've been following SL cricket never seen such an ill disciplined and clueless bunch. It's just not acceptable for an international side. Need a strong, stern, no nonsense cap’n/coach to get em in line and whip em into shape. Close to two years now since Mahela/Sanga left and I can’t see any improvements as a unit. When Herath calls it a day that's going to leave another massive hole. Already SA has cancelled a planned series and they won’t be the only ones if things continue like this. Time is quickly running out.

They've given Tharanga the captaincy as being the most senior/experienced player in the side now.

Should also be opening instead of batting at 6.

I heard that he did captain well in LOI tri-series compared to Mathews..Tbh didnt watch him captain in any match... Now against SA yes planned to focus on how good he is a captain....

he Standard Bank Proteas return to a happy hunting ground for the second Momentum ODI against Sri Lanka taking place at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Wednesday. The Proteas have won the last four ODI’s played at the Durban ground - the last being a four-wicket win against Australia last year - and will take some assurance and confidence from their past successes heading into the match.

Proteas opener, Hashim Amla, says the squad is motivated to continue putting in dominant performances against the visitors following the eight-wicket win on Saturday, particularly since Sri Lanka will be their opening opponents at the ICC Champions Trophy in June.

“We do play Sri Lanka in the Champions Trophy so both teams take benefit from playing against each other,” he explained. “Their bowling attack, be it the spinners or the seamers, you get a sense of what to expect in the Champions Trophy.

“They have good spinners; they are a good team. We won the first game in a good fashion but we won’t look too far. We don’t know what the wicket will play like, I’m sure they are hungry to bounce back and we are hungry to try and keep our momentum.”

Amla has had a successful start to the year scoring a hundred in his 100th Test match in the third Sunfoil Test against Sri Lanka and top-scoring with 57 in the win on Saturday. He says he is not looking too far ahead despite his current purple patch, and will be taking every match as it comes.

“I haven’t changed anything,” he said. “That’s how it goes, you go through phases where you go through a lean patch and thankfully I have managed to get some runs in the last two innings. You take nothing for granted, hopefully I can just continue scoring runs.

“Playing at Kingsmead is always nice. We have had some good success as a one-day team here, I’ve managed to get a few runs here and there. You are always going to perform, be it here at Kingsmead or at any other ground in the country. I don’t feel any added pressure, coming here 1-0 up we want to extend our lead as a team, that is our main focus.”

Standard Bank Proteas batsman, David Miller, has been withdrawn from the Momentum ODI series against Sri Lanka due to a finger injury involving his right hand. Miller sustained a cut to his finger while fielding during the second ODI at Sahara Stadium Kingsmead on Wednesday.

Proteas team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee, explained the injury: “David required sutures to a laceration sustained while fielding a ball during the match last night. He will need at least 7-10 days to recover and will miss the remaining three matches of the series. He remains available for selection for the upcoming tour of New Zealand.”

There will be no replacement added to the squad
