Lankan Premier League will be held from the 18th August to 10th September, 2018. Sri Lanka Cricket has permanently reserved this window for the #LPL for the next five years.
 
SLC wishes to announce the appointment of Mr. Russel Arnold; as the Director of the upcoming Lankan Premier League #LPL, which will be SL’s topmost T20 League, featuring both Lankan and International stars.

Charu Sharma was CEO, RCB. Always makes me wonder what skills they bring to get cushy positions.
 
They’re hopeful of getting second string Indian players.

BCCI should seriously consider allowing the likes of Pathan, Uthappa, Yuvaraj and Gambhir to play in the league. They any way don’t have much future left to play international cricket. Let them earn some money.

Yeh i dont understand why not even let retired or near retired players play diff leagues , those guys need money too , they shud go beserk ,atleast we can see some nore cricket if our players play in these leagues (coz sonetimes i feel indian matches are not ebough !! I need cricket everyday LOL)

And in Initial stage of any new league you need ur legendary players
I still remember Laxman Dravid Gangully who way past thr primes represent thr respective franchise as icon players

Agreed, value of IPL is mainly for being Exclusive League of Indian Active Players :srini

BCCI will never let that happen.... allow Ind Players to play outside IPL !

Sri Lanka Cricket confirmed yesterday. The tournament is expected to feature some big international names (but no Indians) and will be played between August 18- September 10 this year. Indian cricketers are not allowed to compete in other domestic leagues by their Board.

That's precisely is the stand of BCCI from last 10 years, will be same in next many more years as well.

Now, with huge investment $$$$ from STAR, this exclusive net of BCCI will become much stronger .... :srini
 
Good luck to Lanka. But I struggle to see big names there.

I reckon Bangladesh players like Sabbir, Soumya, Miraz, Mushfiqur will play.

Doesn't it clash with CPL ? CPL will run from Aug 8-Sep 16. This will rule out the big boys of the Carribean and their flair ! SL fans, wouldn't it be logical to place it after CPL, say Sep-Oct window or just Sep so that the CPL stars become available for the second half ?

I really missed SLPL. Absolutely delighted that it will be back. I also need cricket everyday, specially T20 cricket.

Make sure maximum 4 overseas are allowed in the XI (not more than that) and it will be nice to have minumum 8 overseas players in the squad. Don't take this year's BPL route with 5 overseas in the XI. I hated that idea because teams pack with overseas allrounders and the local players are pushed to play a very minor role and as a consequence enough local players don't come through the ranks. PSL, CPL, IPL they all have 4 overseas in the XI.

I still believe Lasith Malinga should play, fitness permitting and he will be a crowd puller.

Soumya is a big no. First let him take the BPL into fire. Extremely inconsistent and totally faded away after the dream ODI start. Barring the 77 against India, Sabbir form's hasn't been good.

Soumya Sabbir can still do okay in the subcontinent conditions.

And anyways this league won't have many quality players. The above two can be brought for a lower price too

Franchises will be more willing to take Tamim Iqbal & Mushfiqur Rahim. I think they have already appeared in SLPL 2012. They are still the backbone of Ban & most importantly consistent. Mushy was going all buns blazing in Nidahas Trophy and not to forget his cobra dance. That was fun. :cobra
 
Lankan Premier League 2018 features 39 matches, which include 36 playoff matches and three qualifiers (Two Qualifier and one eliminator) matches and the final. Six teams will compete in the double round-robin format; each team plays twice with other teams.

Dsports is doing well to grab all other leagues, although the market wud be niche but still.

Lanka doesn't have much going for it , hopefully they don't end up in debt, best of luck to Lankan fans.
 
I don't think LCL can survive alone - it'll go bankrupt in couple of years time. Internal market can't produce enough revenue for the league to sustain at higher level, whereas if they over stress to keep the quality high, it won't last long. Now probably the time has come that BPL & LCL should merge with 8 teams - may be 5 from BD & 3 from SRL.
 
This will we good for the growth for SL cricket after the 2015 WC they haven't seemed to be the same team they were before but I feel this league will do to SL cricket what the PSL did for PAK cricket.
 
Good for the SL cricketers. They have been struggling in the LO formats recently and it will be good for them and give boost to young cricketers in SL.
 
Great news for the SL fans and SL cricket. Hope it helps unearths some talented players as well.
 
Think SL need a fitness camp more than a league given their recent injuries.
 
Sri Lanka have fallen behind due to lack of franchise-based tournament - Arnold

Sri Lanka's newly appointed head of Lankan Premier League tournament, Russel Arnold says that the skill levels of country's players have fallen behind due to the lack of a competitive franchise-based tournament with the participation of overseas professionals.

Arnold, the 44-year-old former middle-order batsman, was announced as Director of LPL last week.

All Sri Lanka's south Asian neighbours have flourishing franchise based tournaments and Arnold is confident of creating a vibrant competition of Sri Lanka's own.

"We need something like this. We are falling behind our skill levels. There's a huge interest for franchise-based competition and that culture is there. It's a good opportunity for players to showcase their talent and get them play under pressure and develop their skill levels," Arnold told Cricbuzz.

SLC had launched Sri Lanka Premier League in 2011 but the tournament was unsuccessful and had to be abandoned a year later due to lack of sponsors. The board is careful not to repeat the mistakes of the past.

"We need to make the tournament something that everyone looks forward to. Not just the players, but fans, owners and everyone. I am confident that we can make this a success. There's plenty of interest already and that excites me," Arnold added.

Arnold will be travelling to Malaysia on Monday night where the Asian Cricket Council is meeting. SLC officials are already there and Arnold will be introduced to key officials from the region as he takes charge in the new role. His work as tournament director begins on May 1.

SLC officials had earlier indicated that they were making inquiries from Board of Control for Cricket in India to see whether Indian players could be released for the tournament as that would help them to attract sponsors and television companies. BCCI hasn't provided No Objection Certificates for Indian players to take part in franchised based tournaments of other countries.

The LPL has been scheduled from August 18 to September 10. SLC President Thilanga Sumathipala had mentioned that SLC was looking at a six teams. However, at present, the board seems to be comfortable with five teams with the possibility of increasing it to six teams next season. SLC has separated a window for the LPL tournament for the next five years.

There's been quite a bit of interest on the tournament since it was first announced last year. But it remains to be seen whether the organizers are able to attract sponsors.

Better is BPL and SPL to combine. The only way they can compete.

If not I see no way to survive, as IPL expanding to 3 months, PSL to 2.5, BBL to 2, EPL to 2, CPL to 1.5 and GLT20 to 1


BPL and SPL will be left with neither quality, nor quantity.

Pak international players playing in every other league (except IPL) may not be good idea, may devalue own league PSL.

Top tier Pak players should be kept exclusively for PSL only #JustSaying

They should make one SLBPL(Sri Lanka Bangladesh premier league). Both the boards can share revenues and better pool. With so many of these leagues already around and IPL, PSL and BBL have already somewhat being stable, these leagues are bound to fail. One common league between these two countries will generate much better competition, rivalry and revenues
 
Who's gonna watch this? Forget international stars, SL doesn't even have a Marquee star that can attract audience. Sometimes when you fail, you need to give up.

Sounds good in theory. Hard to execute.

I think its time to bring back champions league.

1 team from each major t20 league to participate. The format needs to be changed from last time which favored certain leagues and had multiple teams from that league, where as other leagues got fewer teams.

CL concept was big flop as crowd didn't bother to watch teams outside IPL play each other, broadcasters lost money !

Who do you think should conduct this tournament? The ICC won't as these are Pvt leagues. Who will take care of the costs etc?

well most of the following will be for ipl teams due to indian population. Obviously it would be ideal if indian players were allowed to play in different leagues. Then a cpl team for example would have some indian following.

However having multiple ipl teams is what made that tournament boring. If the tournament is rebooted iy should be different.

Need to have one team each from cpl, psl, ipl, bbl, bpl, etc...

At the end of the day though, it has to be top quality players competing. People will watch quality cricket.

Indian players playing outside IPL is never going to happen, most important aspect of IPL value is exclusive participation of Indian players. Don't think BCCI will devalue it's successful brand for other boards sake !

CL will not work unless it’s made Home & Away. Another big issue is unlike football in Cricket same players play for multiple franchises so it doesn’t give the same feeling/effect as football CL

I made this list and added prospective players who I think may be available. As for Asif & Butt, I haven't included them as they weren't in PSL.

I can tell you that if/when there is a reboot, it will be without any IPL teams. The IPL/BCCI is not interested in CL.

The CL can be done with one or two teams from each league (sans IPL). But someone has to make $$ investment to get things going. Someone has to take leadership and ownership. It will not be the ICC. Which now leaves one of the boards as the only option. Which board is the question.

2 PSL(Just to increase the viewership, due to huge population)

1 CPL

None from BPL and SPL. It will unnecessarily bring down the quality.

CL started with only 2 ipl teams but no one bothered watching so they had to increase number of ipl teams to get more eyeballs. Don't revise history to suit your viewpoint.

Not revising anything.

CL just felt like IPL extension. It was boring considering IPL is already so long.

Back when CL first started I dont think as much love was there among cricket fans as there is now for franchise cricket.

I think its worth taking another look at.

As i already mentioned in other post unless TV broadcast deal worked out CL not going to happen.Star had losses from CL coverage previously.Only way CL works by playing home & away matches,which is logistical nightmare.
 
Lankan Premier League launch this year will reap success in 3 years – SLC President


Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), President Mr. Thilanga Sumathipala is confident of making the upcoming Lankan Premier League (LPL ) a commercial success within three years of the launch.
“Enormous as the task is we will definitely see that the LPL takes off this year in implementing the IPL concept that has caught on in countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia and South Africa. Sri Lanka had to get moving with it and put the framework in place for it to catch on,” said Sumathipala addressing SLC employees in the annual post-Avurudu speech.

The Lankan Premier League (LPL), Sri Lanka Cricket’s second attempt in six years at a franchise-based T20 league, is set to be played between August and September and is expected to feature six teams.

With a little over three months to go for the August 18 start date, there has been very little information about the tourney released.

Russel Arnold, who was appointed director of the tournament in April, commenced his duties this month and, according to local media reports, he is tasked with nearly every aspect of organising the LPL.

“As overall head, Arnold is expected to work closely with Boards around the world to attract top international stars for the tournament and also make it financially profitable to Sri Lanka Cricket,” Sri Lanka’s Sunday Times reported.

Apart from that, and the release of the time-frame of the tournament, there have been no updates. Crucial aspects such as branding, fixtures, team names, or even the signing of star players likely to take part, have not been revealed yet; SLC and Arnold have little time left at their disposal.

It is not uncommon for schedules of newly-announced tournaments to be released at least a year in advance, in order to competently promote these new events.

The absence of a marketing campaign to generate interest amongst fans well in advance of the tournament could hurt the league. The SLPL, which lasted just one season in 2012, comes to mind — one of the defunct league’s biggest failures was its inability to generate interest amongst local fans.

“That it is all coming together relatively quickly may not be a bad thing — in fact it, may encourage them to aim small for the inaugural version,” Andrew Fidel Fernando told Island Cricket.

“I will say that I was disappointed to see things like the presence cheerleaders at the Nidahas Trophy, which suggests to me that the board is thinking about following the IPL model closely,” Fernando added.

“I think that would be a serious mistake, because that is exactly what the 2012 SLPL attempted to do, and we know how that ended. It’s essential that the LPL, and I really hope they change the name, needs to have a Lankan flavour, which SLPL sorely lacked, and must be marketed as such to have a chance of success.”

With SLC appearing desperate to enlist the services of Indian players to tap into the lucrative Indian TV market, the board’s focus with the LPL appears to be primarily money.

The cricket board’s key talking points have centred around commercial interests, which is the same motivation that allowed for teams in the SLPL to be hastily handed to unvetted individuals who later failed to pay players. Some even turned out to be alleged bookies.

To Fernando’s point, the need now for Sri Lanka is not a glamourous IPL-like tournament (a cash-cow for SLC) but more a high-quality T20 league that tests local talent with competitive and high-intensity T20s and prepares them for top-flight cricket, with interest generated amongst fans across the island.

If SLC takes LPL matches to cities other than Colombo and Kandy, it could go a long way towards building long-term interest and a strong following all through Sri Lanka.

Without fan support at stadiums, players are not subjected to the intense, high-pressure environments they face when they play overseas, and the tournament can’t be viewed as a success when played to empty stands.

Any critical analysis of the LPL will not be complete without highlighting the poor choice in picking the time-frame of the tourney. The LPL will clash with other more established tournaments and will be held during the south-west monsoon season.

The Caribbean Premier League coincides with the LPL, while the English domestic season and Pakistan’s tour of Zimbabwe will erode the available international talent pool.

However, to be fair to SLC, this is perhaps the only window available in a tightly packed schedule dominated by global T20 leagues. As such, the LPL’s chances of IPL-like success is bleak.

It is why SLC must rely on the domestic market. But in the hopes of replicating the successes of other nations and chasing TV dollars from overseas, the real fear is that the LPL could well become another SLPL.

Sri Lanka can look to leagues such as the Super Smash League in New Zealand and the Big Bash League of Australia, both gradually established a strong domestic market for their tournaments.

Although New Zealand and Australia have larger economies than Sri Lanka, New Zealand’s population is smaller than that of Sri Lanka’s and Australia’s is comparable. It is not far-fetched therefore for Sri Lanka to make the LPL a success by focusing solely on the domestic market.

Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to inform that the Lankan Premier League (T20) has been postponed indefinitely, until an elected body is constituted at the SLC.

SLC believes that such a tournament should be organized following a wider consultative process and also taking into consideration the views of the stakeholders.

The Lankan Premier League was earlier scheduled to be held from the 18th August to 10th September, 2018.

The new dates of the tournament will be notified in due course.

The league will comprise of 4 teams, namely, Colombo, Dambulla, Galle and Kandy, while each team will play 6 games in the first round, facing each other twice. The top two teams of the points table will go into the finals to be played on the 2nd September, 2018 at the R. Premadasa International Cricket Stadium.

All the Nationally contracted players, contracted Domestic players and promising U19 players are set to take part in the tournament, which will be played at venues such as, the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Pallekelle International Cricket Stadium and Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium.

The matches will be Day-Night Games and every game day, there will be two matches played.

Wow so from a potential Franchise league to this. SLC is a mess.
 
Colombo - Sri Lanka's cricket authorities Thursday shelved long-delayed plans for a Twenty20 competition akin to the massively lucrative Indian Premier League, instead announcing a local tournament with no foreign players.

With an eye on the billions of dollars and millions of viewers drawn to the IPL, the island nation launched its own premier league in 2012 but the competition was a flop, lasting just one edition.

Sri Lanka Cricket had hoped to revive the tournament, modelled on the short-format competition that has lured international stars like England's Ben Stokes and the West Indies' Chris Gayle to India.

But a board official said the plans had been scrapped and replaced by the Sri Lanka Cricket T20 League, which would feature exclusively local players.

"There will be no foreign players, but our own international cricketers will play in the four teams that will take part," a board official told AFP.

The new league will nurture emerging local talent by giving young players the opportunity to play alongside the island's best, the official said.

The four teams will face each other twice in the tournament, which is slated to begin August 21.

We are currently in Sri Lanka as part of our ongoing investigations into serious allegations of corruption in cricket in the country. The enquiries are continuing so it would not be appropriate to comment further, but I can confirm that we have, at their request, provided a detailed briefing to the Sri Lankan President, Prime Minister and Sports Minister. We are receiving full support from the Competent Authority currently in place at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) whilst elections for the SLC Board are pending.

“I’d like to make it clear that these investigations have been underway for a considerable time and do not relate to the series about to start in Sri Lanka. However, I will take the opportunity to brief both the teams over the coming days to ensure they remain alert to the risks from would be corruptors.”

For such a developed & resourceful country (in comparison to South Asia), corruption level in SRL's cricket is too high. This has been going for like couple of decades now, which is damaging their cricket more than the civil war. Even during that period, SRL cricket survived and flourished, but now it's almost to the level of collapse. Sad part is, unlike their neighbors, their cricket administration is dominated by former cricketers, who had been part of their raise, still SLC is probably at it's lowest point in last 5 decades. Even as an associate, in 70s, early 80s SRL drew more respect as a member of cricket family than now.
