Anyone else been to see this yet?

I have seen every film in the series and for me this one is the best of the lot.

Acting, writing, directing and cinematography on another level to any other Star Wars film. And most of the more OTT moments tread on the right side of acceptability.

Loved it.

I have never really gotten into Star Wars despite seeing all of the movies.

To me space is about exploration and enjoying complex plot lines and star wars always feel so thin on that. The good guys, the bad guys - and that's that.

I will however watch the movie soon as the people around me are serious fans and hopefully it would be an upgrade to the last episode.

Watched it in Digital IMAX today :

What I didn't like :
  • Empire is one of my Favourite EVER films and generally considered one of the greatest SEQUELS of all time. In that sense the constant comparison and the need to "DO BETTER" seems to have messed with each and every creative decision in this movie, WHICH DIDN"T ALWAYS LEAD TO POSITIVE RESULTS
  • The was a bit of drag apparent along the runtime.
  • Too many threads IMO, the constant cutting between
the Ren-Rey fight as well as the spaceship battle outside AND the infiltration
felt kinda weird. The timings weren't in sync.
  • Climax may not be favorable to many .
    Especially the death of LUKE
    . I for one, didn't really like
Ren's rise as the new main villian
  • The Chinese characters in the film seems so forced, is this what Hollywood's going to be from now on ? Reserving roles for Chinese people simply for the market. ? There should be some balance between representation and appeasement or atleast try everyone like F & F series.

What I liked :

  • Story is pretty damn good, they TOOK A LOT OF RISKS and didn't play it safe like JJ . Rian Johnson deserves plaudits.
  • Carrie fisher and Mark were very very good , it's a shame they'll have to write out carrie from the next one OR change the story .
  • Some really great moments in this one - standout for me would
be the last move by Laura derns character .
  • Rey has grown on me , she's quite appealing as a character now.
  • Special effects are great.
  • The movie did effectively tease a possible heel - turn from many of the main characters , till the end. That was nicely done.

SandyB Have not watched this yet and forgot what happened in Force Awakens, which Star Wars movies do I need to watch again before the Last Jedi in the correct order? or is it not required

Extremely disappointed!!
Will have to watch it again but only because I’m a huge fan of the originals and there surely has to be something I missed as most people loved it.

Nice b8 shazzy.

Where does it rate amongst its predecessors?

Still haven't seen this.

It was good. This is the only movie franchise I have been emotionally invested in since the dark knight trilogy ended. It had quite a few flaws but it had heart just like the previous movie and I enjoyed it a lot.

Even Force Awakens? That was a copy and paste job of a new hope

Most people are saying that only the original and Empire might be better than this. This I think is the best of the lot, many would disagree with that. But it is definitely good.

I was serious lol will do a search online to see how to proceed

Okay. Misunderstood.

You need to see the original trilogy - A new Hope, Empire strikes back and Return of the jedi . Otherwise it's hard to follow the present film series. The prequel trilogy is good (IMO) but too much fiddling by Lucas made the movies bloated. You can watch that too if you end up liking the series.

I liked the force awakens a lot more than the last Jedi. I feel letdown by the last Jedi.

It seems the force awakens set so much up in terms of why Luke left and why he left elaborate clues about where he was hiding, Rey’s lineage and snoke’s origins, etc and somehow that was all pushed aside like nothing and completely irrelevant in the last Jedi so the story could be moved forward in a different direction. That’s the best way for me to explain it without spoiling anything.

I think if the writer/director had stuck to the same line of story development after the force awakens, we would have a better film.

Well said..
I felt exactly the same... left the movie feeling extremely let down.

Great to see Luke sky Walker carrying the movie/story once again. What I found odd was how the character of snoke just shrunk to human size although it was huge in the previous film. They should have kept him the same size in the sequel, he lost his majestic awe in my opinion.

When is kylor Ren going to don the Darth Vader mask??

I did not like it. There is massive inconsistencs in Luke's character here as opposed to in the OT.

Haven't seen it apparently has a very low Audience score on Rotten tomatoes, despite having a certified fresh rating. Complete opposite of the justice league

Very strange situation. It seems to be an online extremist campaign led by spotty young men who mainly still live with their parents and probably struggle to leave their basements unless a new Star Wars film is out (I was at a midnight showing and encountered many of these individuals!!)...

BTW I am not saying that somebody cannot dislike the film but much of the ill feeling seems to be based in poor reasoning, which is evident on the IMDB review list.

If you look at the response from the film critics, i.e. the people who watch a myriad of films from around the world for a living, know many people in the industry and generally know what they are talking about, it has been extremely positive.

You got it wrong.

I’m not spotty.

Also lots of chatter about it being done by Bots.

Anyway, it has made half a billion dollars in less than a week so clearly the brand is resilient.

Might have to go back and watch it again but I don’t think they did Luke justice no matter how you look at it..

This series is nothing but a cash cow for Disney now. The original 1-3 are good, the prequels trash..the latest two..overrated.

I watched them all before but needed a recap before the last Jedi, am just going to watch Force Awakens prior to the new movie because the others will take too much time

Never really liked any of the Star Wars films, although the original trilogy was probably as good as they get. This is getting great reviews, but I still don't think I'll get it.

Personally didn't have high expectations so enjoyed the movie overall but having watched Force Awakens before hand this was not the best follow up in terms of continuation of the story line arc's in the previous movie. But am guessing they may have held back on a fair amount for the next movie, that may not have been the best idea because you strike when the iron is hot. Last Jedi was a very good action movie but lacked to an extent when it came to soul. As far as why Luke left is concerned the reasons given were solid and they went into it with quiet a bit of detail but Rey's lineage is still ambiguous, snoke turns out to be just another character who is not very convincing as a bad guy, Kylo Ren is evil but conflicted; they could do with someone who is just pure evil and we genuinely take them seriously.

Disappointed with the movie, found it cringe worthy at many moments ,except the light speed suicide blast.
Sad though considering Rogue one was such a surprise and hoped they would be going in such a direction.

Going round and round ... repackaging the same story over and over. Found it boring and cringe. Snoke controls the minds but yet cannot see the obvious in the room. Also, did someone notice how similar the guards of snoke were to the guards of the red queen from Alice in Wonderland!

Rogue one I think has an identity of its own based on a separate anthology series, I enjoyed it more then this. Last Jedi had some very spectacular action involving all the spacecraft, but there was some heart and soul missing, narrative could have been better.

Visually spectacular but that’s about it.
Completely messed up the story and didn’t give any in sight into the characters.

This film was set straight after the ending of Force Awakens yet there was little contunuity...
In a matter of a day or two the rebels when from a massive victory to being all but destroyed.
The humour was predictable and extremely cheesy and General Hock was portrayed as a complete idiot.

The chase in space was stupidly drawn out and the 30 minutes or so wasted on that casino planet was for what exactly?

There are just so many other issues too.
Snoake, Luke’s character etc etc etc...

They really messed this one up.

I normally agree with your posts but I have a polar opposite view to your experience in this case.

This film was utter tripe - by far the worst of the franchise and the poor depiction of supposedly big characters was awful beyond belief - making jaja seem like a breath of fresh air.

You could cut out 45 minutes from the film and the ‘plot’ would be unaffected. And the woeful rehash of the hoth scene but with skis was appalling.

This will be the first Star Wars film I will not be buying - a huge disappointment.

Very interesting. I am going to see the film again in January and see how it holds up on a second viewing.

Looking at many of the critic / fan reviews it seems like this film is a “Marmite” job - people either love it, or hate it!

It’s interesting as a good friend of mine watched a t a second time after being on the fence following the first viewing, and detested it for the second viewing. His chief reason being how completely redundant so much of the second film was, ludicrous plot holes and a diabolical way to portray the films most iconic character,.

But as you say, marmite.

Seen it again now.

As I suspected - Marmite!!

Sat down expecting to pick numerous faults and really wanting to “dislike” or even just “critique” it - but unfortunately I got swept off my feet again and was transfixed, especially by the final act.

Love this film! Officially now. But totally get and respect why many do not!

Watched it at last.

Too long. They could have cut half an hour of material out and had a taughter narrative. Daisy Ridley and Mark Hamill shone, but Adam Driver just can’t carry off the conflicted antihero.

Far too easy for a few small fighters to take out a huge ship, again. This is getting lazy.

Why didn’t all ships that weren’t the cruiser just jump away and disperse?

Why didn’t Snoke sense that Kylo was about to betray him?

Still no clue as to why Rey is so strong. A Kenobi, maybe? Anakin reincarnated?

There were a few moments that made me smile though, took me back to my teens watching the original Star Wars films. The err... second climax recalling the Battle of Hoth, and Chewie’s new comedy sidekick.

So.... not as good as the original trilogy, but better than the dreadful prequels.

Not a fan of Stars Wars' feminism, but apart from the fact it was very long, I have to say that it undoubtedly one of the best movies of the franchise.

Ok, I think the pecking order is:

Empire
New Hope
Return

<< daylight >>

Force Awakens
Last Jedi

<<< more daylight >>>

Clones
Sith
Phantom

Really? I thought Adam driver was one of the better part of the movie
