Allrounders have always been difficult to compare because batting, bowling both needs to be considered. While its easier to Compare Kallis with Sobers as both were Batting Allrounder.
Its tough to compare Kallis with Hadlee as Hadlee was a bowling allrounder. Then there is also a case of Kapil who was good in both but not great in either.

So i selected 11 retired AR with min 2000 runs and 200 wickets with batting average nearly 25 and above.

Traditional comparison of average comparison never sit well with me because it favored Batting A/R a bit too much. Also not outs etc tend to distort batting stats.

The above chart shows massive gulf between Kallis and Botham which felt a bit off to me.

So i decided to breakdown each player inning by inning and tried to generalize their impact level and consistency.

For Example - Imran's career stats based solely on runs scored and wickets taken every match. In matches where Imran didn't bat or bowl were given as 0. Also some match might be abandoned or rain curtailed matches.

A/R based on consistency. An A/R is expected to atleast score few runs or take some wickets in a match.
This table is based on failure index where the player could take atleast 3 wickets in a match or score atleast 30 runs.

This table shows how well player contributed in a match in a quality fashion.

To my big surprise Pollock went from top of last table to bottom in this table. Sobers , Kallis and Imran retains same spot as average chart.
However the difference between them is greatly reduced.

When it comes to performing both as bowler and batsman in same test, Ian Botham was in a class of its own. Imran at second spot should stop all his distractors who claimed he never performed with both bat and ball in a same match. Kallis is in last spot because he didn't bowl much in many tests.

Great thread , i wish i had seen that thread before. It would have helped me and post few tables based on that.
Ian Botham does make huge mark in next few tables that i will post below.

I can share the excel with you, if you are interested.

For my own interest, I actually added a few more ARs and Keith Miller trumped Ian Botham as ARs who scored runs and took wickets at the same time.

Even though IK was one of the greatest ARs, he seems to have either been a prolific wicket taker or a prolific scorer, but rarely at the same time. Ian Botham and Keith Miller did it at the same time for a good percentage of their careers. Botham though, had a steep decline which impacted his stature.

You should check the table above where player had scored 50 runs and take 5 wickets in a single test match. Irran came in second after Botham.
I will do Keith Miller's stats soon and see where he is placed, i initially removed him because he took only 170 wickets , i used stats bowlers getting 200 wickets to lower overall number.

Exceptional performance
This is for AR who did exceptional in one discipline and great in other. A match winning A/R at the top of his game.

Ian Botham tops the chart again with Sobers narrowly behind him. I never expected Vettori to be this high in this still. Still he deserves his spot by scoring 100 runs in a match and taking 5 wickets Five times no less.

Once in a lifetime performance
A/R pretty much doing a one man show.
It only happened 4 times in test history.

I updated the table with Miller , you are right that he had better numbers than ImranKhan in Good/Exceptional catory , which means he was bigger match winner. However he is quite a bit behind in Good category which i rank as overall rank as AR.
Botham in his peak was perhaps the greatest AR of all time. But as you said with time his performances started to dip alarmingly especially after mid 80's.

Excellent Analysis. I like how you have broken it down into excellent - good etc. Really tells you a lot about their careers even if you didnt follow it properly.

i.e. when good (Good + Exceptional), Botham was on another level. Really made the teams they played for have an extra player.
Also Sobers, Kallis and Immy were truly consistent.

I did some calculation of current A/R's. Please note that some players on the list thrive on home conditions. Hopefully in few years time i would have enough data to check away record.

jeetu, excellent post! Fantabulous!

Any possibilities of seeing where the performances happened? Atleast the good, great and the exceptional table? Did it happen in their home country or was it outside?
That I think will make things a bit more clearer.

SM Pollock 108 44 40.74

To my big surprise Pollock went from top of last table to bottom in this table. Sobers , Kallis and Imran retains same spot as average chart.
However the difference between them is greatly reduced.

5 wicket haul means more than r en a hundred and you are comparing it to a 50.
