AHMEDABAD : Gujarat government on Monday formally presented work order to L&T company for construction of the 182-metre-tall Statue of Unity of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. The announcement in this regard was made by chief minister Anandiben Patel in Gandhinagar.

She said the work will be completed in four years at a cost of Rs 2,989 crore. "The statue will boost tourism in the state. It involves construction of not just 182-metre-tall world's biggest statue but also an underwater fish aquarium, agriculture development and water management centre, a museum dedicated to Sardar Patel and other attractions," said Patel.

The construction of Statue of Unity on the Sardar Sarovar Dam will begin on October 31 to mark the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

According to an estimate, the statue will be built using 75,000 cubic metre concrete, 5,700 metre structural steel, 18,500 metre reinforced bar and 1,900 metre bronze of 8mm thickness. The statue will provide opportunity to visitors to view the dam from a height of 450 ft.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched the Statue of Unity project in October 2010 when he was chief minister of Gujarat.

After that, he had been asking the Congress-led government at the Centre to fund the construction of the statue as a national project but the central government did not accept his request. Finally, after becoming Prime Minister, Modi declared the construction of the statue as a national project and allotted Rs 200 crore for it in the very first budget of his government.

In 2010, while announcing the project, Modi had said that the statue of Sardar Patel would be unique in many ways.

So this is the guy who is responsible for driving out the British before they could finish modernising India. To think India could have been like Hong Kong if these small minded patriots weren't hell bent on independence.

And no Pakistan as well and Ghazve Hind would have materialised by now....infact we be living in the Khalifa of the Hind and Kashmir would still have Aksai Chin....

Bad man that Patel- wonder why Jinnah saab didnt stand upto him!

I dont think investment will go to waste if it is not just a statue..underwater acquarium and other stuff will bring in tourism for years....3000 crores should not be hard to make profit from...may be it will 10 odd years to recover the investment.

Why would any tourist waste his money to see a giant statue of an old, bald man who has no historical significance in his mind? Waste of money in my opinion.

A question for indian ppers i see Sardar Patel being promoted even more than Gandhi and Nehru sometimes is it because BJP is more in love with Patel than the other 2?

For me Gandhi and Jinnah both are a class above all other political figures from sub continent not sure why BJP love to promote Sardar Patel more.

Every small or big Modi speech mentions Gandhi almost all the time. So, I don't think its true.

Will they allow alcohol in Gujarat?

Sheer wastage tax payers money.

Who visits Gujarat other than traders and businessman? Why not in national capital? IMO a statue in Indian Parliament akin to Shaheed Bhagat Singh's was more than enough.

Nobody knows about him, Sorry few people does know about him. You just cannot wake up one day from slumber and start teaching to 1.2 Billion population. History cannot be rewritten.

What relevance such political figures have in today's world.

If Mr. Patel was alive, he would have been very happy if the money was spent on some other poor people scheme.

The madness of building useless statues at every corner of crossroads is like an epidemic in India.

Shaheed Baghat Singh?

Why is the term "shaheed" being used here?

Shaheed Baghat Singh?

Why is the term "shaheed" being used here?

Because he gave his life for India against Britishs the word shaheed is also used in hindi for those who gave their life for their country.

More like Bose and Patel drove the British out before they killed off Indians entirely by causing more famines like the Bengal famine in which three million died.

I tell you it is impossible to modernize a women and her baby lying dead by the roadside.

Gujarat: Long queues, irked tourists at Statue of Unity as lift stops working again
On Wednesday, for a third time in four days, one of the two elevators stopped working with the lone working elevator being insufficient to handle the rush.

Irate tourists demanded that their tickets be refunded as many of them were unable to make it to the gallery even after waiting for nearly four hours.

The management at the Statue of Unity has been at the receiving end from tourists after one of the two high-speed elevators at the tourist spot in Kevadia Colony stopped functioning, resulting in serpentine queues and several hours of wait for those wanting to visit the viewing gallery of the statue.

On Wednesday, for a third time in four days, one of the two elevators stopped working with the lone working elevator being insufficient to handle the rush. Irate tourists demanded that their tickets be refunded as many of them were unable to make it to the gallery even after waiting for nearly four hours. The site had witnessed much chaos on December 2 and 4 when a similar situation arose due to malfunctioning lifts.

An official said that while tickets have been capped at 6,500 persons per day for the viewing gallery, the rush has already taken its toll on the lifts.

IK Patel, Narmada District Collector and CEO of SoU, rushed to the spot to handle the situation.

Good to see that the monument, the pride of India, is attracting more than expected number of tourists from all around the globe, albeit a few thankless ones too.

What a spectacle Modi made out of this statue's inauguration, as he always does even while inaugurating a traffic signal. Good optics don't always stand you in good stead in politics.

At least he is working 20 hours a day. What is your contribution to the nation?
