Stephen Fry under police investigation for blasphemy after branding God an 'utter maniac'

Personally I don't feel he should be punished for his point of view but if he has broken a law then an investigation has to take place.

However his arguments are the typical extreme athiest nonsense. We were created as human beings and one of the attributes of humans is we suffer emotional and physical pain. It is how it is .

Atheists are the most frustrated bunch of groups in the World.

that was 2 years ago? They are investigating him for something 2 years ago? Atheists have no rights in western countries??

So blasphemy laws overtake Freedom of speech in Ireland?Remarkable.

Good to see a lot of support for Stephen, finally the world is moving towards questioning organized religion/imagination.

There seems to be alternate theory as the person who put the case on Stephen probably did to point out the absurdity of the Irish laws.Hopefully they will vote this law out as well.

Yet they are not the ones settling difference of opinion with AK-47s or blasphemy laws.

They are only around 3% of the population of US where a pew poll was conducted and it's fair to assume they are even less in other countries around the world. To suggest atheists are somehow always peaceful is laughable.

Don't you believe in democracy? Surely if majority of Irish want this law, they have a right? I dont like the tv license law where I am forced to pay for a service I may never use but I'm not foolish enough to break the law.

As i said hopefully they would vote out the law as they did for gay marriage also freedom of speech is also in the Irish constitution,I'm guessing its absolute.

Typical.

So babies also have to suffer from terrifying diseases and physical torture for no fault of theirs?

Create bacteria, bugs and worms that make babies suffer?

That's right. Babies are humans and they have to suffer right? All those bacteria and bugs will be brought back to life on judgement day and judges right?

It's the right of the Creator how he wishes to create. Everyone knows the limits and weaknesses of humans and what can happen to you from the day you are born until the day you die. The vast majority of the world has accepted this and continues to believe in God. If you don't it's your choice.

I think that there is a war between God and the Devil and suffering is not caused by God but by the devil

Listen to the song "Spanish Train" by the Irish singer Chris de Burg

So all that is wrong is fault of devil and all that good is coz GOD how convenient.

I agree with some things that Stephen says and I agree less with many others, however it's ridiculous that he is being investigated here for stating a relatively harmless personal opinion. Surely the police have better things to do than this.

Yet they are not the ones settling difference of opinion with AK-47s or blasphemy laws.

They don't need to in all fairness, they are protected by the state in most western nations, and they settle their differences with cruise missiles and aircraft bombers.

This investigation will end with no ill consequences for Fry, if anything the publicity will do his career a big service. Atheists are far more powerful than the religious lobbies in the British Isles.

But do they justify it in the name of their atheist ideology? For instance yelling Jai Sri flying spaghetti monster before launching a MOAB strike on peaceful pakhtuns in Afghanistan.

Why would they need to? Do you think there is any danger of Stephen Fry being successfully prosecuted for blasphemy and being incarcerated? As an atheist, Fry knows he has the power of the Crown state behind him and he can say what he wants. Europe isn't the Indian subcontinent where you can't draw a cartoon mocking a religious character or walk into a restaurant wearing a tatoo depicting a goddess.

Democracy is not tyranny of the majority. Human rights are inalienable, regardless of populism.

Cannot underestimate the cringe this has caused here. 99.99% of people here are so bloody embarrassed.

For whats it worth the law isn't technically enforceable, or it was designed not to be called on, yet the morons in government still never abolished it. Would be surprised if this fiasco hasn'T hastened its demise.

Country has come a long way from the clutches of the Catholic Church but alas some small remnants still remain. Will be eradicated from this country entirely over time.
