Steve Smith & David Warner suspended for 12 months, Cameron Bancroft suspended for 9 months [#102]

So we'll get to what CA makes of it in a few minutes. Will Warner be isolated like KP? Will SS be banned and stripped off captaincy? Did Lehmann resign? Who all made up the leadership Group? Big press conference incoming.

This looks like a PC link. Hasn't started yet.

Could be some big BIG statements.

What are the expectations guys?

MEDIA RELEASE

March 28, 2018

Cricket Australia Statement

The Cricket Australia Board has received preliminary findings of the investigation into last weekend’s events in Cape Town involving the Australian Men’s Cricket Team.

Following this, Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland has officially reported Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft for breaching article 2.3.5 of Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct.

All three players reported will depart South Africa tomorrow. The replacement players will fly to Johannesburg over the next 24 hours to join the squad for the Fourth Test against South Africa.

The three replacement players are Matthew Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns.

The Cricket Australia Board has endorsed Tim Paine as Captain of the Australian Men’s Test Team.

Sanctions are expected to be announced within the next 24 hours.

The preliminary findings have confirmed that prior knowledge of the incident in Cape Town was confined to only the three players reported.

Cricket Australia Chairman, David Peever said:

“We understand and share the anger of fans and the broader Australian community about the events that unfolded in Cape Town on Saturday.

“This issue goes beyond the technical nature of the offences and various codes of conduct. It is about the integrity and reputation of Australian Cricket and Australian sport.

“Ultimately, it is about whether Australians can feel proud of their national sporting teams.

“That depends as much on the way the players conduct themselves, as it does about winning or losing.

“It is about how we play the game,” Peever concluded.

Cricket Australia CEO, James Sutherland said:

“In view of the broader reputational and integrity issues involved, the sanctions that will be contemplated are significant. The process must therefore be thorough to ensure that all relevant issues have been examined.

“I understand the appetite for urgency given the reputation of Australia as a sporting nation has been damaged in the eyes of many. However, urgency must be balanced with due process given the serious implications for all involved.

“In addition to sanctions for individuals, Cricket Australia will initiate an independent review into the conduct and culture of our Australian men’s teams.

“We will have more to say about this review in the coming days, but it will be conducted by an expert panel who will report to the Cricket Australia Board,” Sutherland concluded.

Mr Sutherland also indicated strong support for ICC Chief Executive Officer David Richardson’s comments on Sunday that the game needs to have a hard look at itself, to improve standards of behaviour across the board.

I guess, sponsors have pressed their full weight on CA's throat.

Aus XI for Johannesburg test will be:-

Burns
Renshaw
Khwaja
S Marsh
Maxi
M Marsh
Paine
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

Absolute disgrace.

Not even going to watch any matches until Lehmann goes.

Sutherland the gutless, coward should be sacked as well.

Absolute joke that Lehmann keeps his post.

Still not satisfied that Lehman had no idea about the cheating. He may have not known about this isolated incident but maybe he knows that they do tamper and lets them do it. If he honestly didn't know, then what coaching is he actually doing if he has no idea what his team is up to. "Leadership group" was captain, vice and a recent debutant, they are definitely hiding something.

It was only a matter of confirmation or else everyone knew that those three players won't be part of Johannesburg test. We will have to wait for the sanctions to be announced later.

The question now is, how the hell, did Lehmann got away with this?

"Sanctions will be significant and will reveal the gravity of the situation" Said this with a dead stone face.

Expect at least 6 month bans.

:)). "Yes or no question - did they cheat?"

*James blinks and stares for a pause*

"This was not within the laws or spirits of the game"

It is strange that no one else knew about this apart from Smith, Warner and Bancroft.

Smith kept saying that the "leadership group" knew about it. The word "group" implies more than two people. But if it was indeed just Smith and Warner then it was extremely stupid of Smith to implicate everyone else in the team who could possibly be seen as forming part of the "leadership group".

"Sanctions to reflect the gravity of the situation."

Sounds pretty bad, looks like it will be minimum 6 month bans up to 1 year.
Surprised that Lehmann goes free, that's hard to believe that he wasn't involved.

Even if one is incredibly naive, it is impossible to imagine that one or more bowlers wouldn't have known what was going on.

When Smith said 'group' did he only mean himself and Warner?Because Bancroft sure isn't part of that.

There is video evidence of the coach messaging the 12th man. If Handscomb is involved, so was everyone in the starting XI

Come on James, get tough. Life ban the whole team and support staff :mv

Deal has been cut. Probably 6 months sanction. The rest of the people get away. Lehmann not being sacked means nothimg significant will happen.

Surprised Lehman has kept his job. Thought they would sack him. Looks like Smith,Warner ,and Bancroft will get a ban.

Every report was saying Lehman will be axed citing sources. Then the news that Warner has left Team whatsapp group etc must also be fake news

Shocked that Lehmann has been permitted to stay. If he knew about the plan then he should obviously go; if he didn’t know about it, then in my mind that’s even worse because it means that he has lost control of his team. Weak decision.

I guess, sponsors have pressed their full weight on CA's throat.

The board is in the process of negotiating broadcasting rights so the timing of this affair is terrible.

Don't think these guys will ever play for Australia again. Life ban or not, they will never be considered for selection again. Amazing fall from grace.

Don't even know why Renshaw was dropped. Started well in India and faded but looked like he had it in him.

Maxwell got on Smith's wrong side looks like, and was bad mouthed by him in the press and lost his place. Now karma takes over.

And Joe Burns looks like a typical Australian Home / Flat Track Bully. They won't go far with him and Khawaja and the like.

The board is in the process of negotiating broadcasting rights so the timing of this affair is terrible.

Is it really? It has brought cricket on the front pages all over from what I can see online.

These deals are about money, and negative news sells well in particular.

I feel sorry for Warner, I find it very hard to believe that the bowlers who were supposed to get the ball to reverse were completely unaware of the tampering part. That is very hard to believe.

If anything Lehman should have the shame to resign. But then again maybe he wants to see out this tour and then hand in his papers.

How come bowlers don't know that ball's condition has been changed or not. You could easily see if one side of the ball has lost the shine naturally or with the help of some abrasive external stuff by your fielders. This is plain xxx crap from CA.

But there is a difference between knowing that the ball's condition has changed and knowing what caused that change to happen.

Remember, the umpires did not change the ball either after inspecting it.

Captain and Vice Captain were plotting a sinister plan (no one knows for how long this has been going on), coach was unaware, the fast bowlers who were reaping all the benefits were blissfully unaware as were the fielders who were handling the ball being passed on from keeper to the bowler! What a joke

It is believable if this was an isolated incident. But I don't think it was an isolated incident. When asked that question, Sutherland said "I hope it was an isolated incident" which suggests that he does not necessarily believe Smith who says it was.

There's no point involving the bowlers in this unless they were directly involved with ball tampering. As we understand the men in focus here are the two designated leaders without the instructions of whom this incident would not have occurred. Practically speaking, maybe the whole freaking squad knew about it and they probably did. You can't sack them all. You appoint leaders to be held accountable for the actions of their team.

Having said that, its mind boggling that Darren Lehmann keeps his job because he remains the biggest loser in this both if knew or didn't know about it in advance. What is he doing in that set up now is a matter of question.

I expect a minimum of 1 year ban for Smith and Warner.

Smith will and should never captain any team ever again at any level of the sport.

Faf,AB and co. need to step up and get this series win now. You will never get an easier Australian team to beat and secure a series win.

Dear Australian Cricket Fans,

I would like to provide you with a further update on the situation with the Australian Men’s Cricket Team. We appreciate the concern you have regarding this situation and we wanted to ensure that you received this news directly from us.

I have recently concluded a meeting with the Cricket Australia Board in which we discussed the findings to date of the investigation into the incident in Cape Town. The initial outcomes and actions are as follows:

Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft have been officially reported for breaching Cricket Australia’s Code of Conduct and will depart the squad immediately.

The preliminary findings have confirmed that prior knowledge of the incident in Cape Town was confined to only the three players reported.

Sanctions are expected to be announced within the next 24 hours.

Tim Paine has been endorsed as Captain of the Australian Men’s Test Team.

Matthew Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns will fly to Johannesburg today to join the squad for the Fourth Test against South Africa.
In addition to sanctions for the individuals involved, Cricket Australia will initiate an independent review into the conduct and culture of our Australian men’s teams. The review will be an important step in rebuilding and restoring your pride in our Men’s teams.

Our teams have a responsibility as role models to ensure they uphold the values Australians expect, and to inspire us through the way they play.

Further, the health and welfare of our players and other staff is of the utmost priority. The Team Psychologist is with the team and providing support, while a number of players and staff have family and friends with them in South Africa.

The last few days have provided the strongest of indications of the passion Australians have for cricket and the Australian Men’s Team. Fans have provided a consistent voice regarding their expectations and we have been listening. We greatly value the feedback we receive from the Australian Cricket Family and will take the necessary steps to address your concerns.

A little too much talk from CA - almost nervous chatter.

Savage :yk

Smith was not just at the pinnacle of his career for Australia, but right at the top of the world game. Astonishing how this utterly gormless act may now have huge impact for the rest of his career.

Even if Lehman didn’t knew about the plot everything happened under his watch. Also he was very actively involved in the coverup, so that should have given enough reason to sack him. Wonder what kind of influence this guy has on CA to get away scot-free🤔🤔

I think Cricket Australia is talking big to placate the general public anger towards this incident but end of the day by letting Lehman stay its clear the cover up has started.

Come on James, get tough. Life ban the whole team and support staff :mv

Yeah ban whole Australia for next 20 years!!!!! Ban of 3-5 matches are ok for the culprits anything more than that is over the top.

Was thinking, Maxwell would be a great captain at this moment in time. He's a likeable guy

We don't know that, he may have been the one telling the players to own up

Looks like it is all about damage control right now with CA. They are only targeting 3 players who are clearly involved with Warner being the 'leadership group.' Rest including Lehmann CA will protect to give the impression this was a one-off incident when clearly it wasn't.

"Lehmann’s role has been scrutinised after he was seen speaking via a walkie-talkie to the 12th man, Peter Handscomb, moments after Bancroft’s actions were picked up by the cameras. The reserve then delivered a message to his team-mate, who stuffed the sticky‑tape down his trousers soon after.

But Sutherland said: “No other players or support staff had prior knowledge and this includes Darren Lehmann who, despite inaccurate media reports, has not resigned. He will continue to coach the Australian men’s team under his current contract [until after the 2019 Ashes].”

How can Sutherland say that no one else was involved when Lehmann sent Handscomb to warn Bancroft that he had been caught?

Over the top dramatized reaction by Australian and Australian politician is getting quite annoying.

They tried to cheat by changing the ball condition. Fine and ban them for few matches and end this soon.

Life Ban for these cheats

No life Ban should be for Match Fixing.

But Ball tempering is also Harmfull for Cricket as it sebd negative message to young fans who aspire to be cricketers.

So in my opinion first step should be to remove the player from their post i.e captaincy or Vice captaincy n send them immediatly home as in the case of Smith n Warner .
Secondly the main Punishment Should be to Ban them for atleast 1 whole next Tour or Serier. And is that period dont allow these player to participate in any capacity in any Game.

This will ensure they serve for their mistakes.

And i m really shocked that CA allowed to continue Lehman to coach even they said he will continue as per his Contrat till its end.

Whether he was involed or not. He is responsible for what happened in SA.
Becuase he was sent with the team as their head coach so. HE SHOULD BE MADE ACCOUNTED/RESPONSIBLE AS WELL.

So far they have done a lot of talking but have not punished anyone. Lehmann somehow survived.

If they are serious about this then David Warner has to receive a life ban. Not just for this incident, but for the countless incidents he has caused. Even the ECB had the guts to eventually get rid of Pietersen, and he has never been missed.

David Warner has stood down from the captaincy of his Indian Premier League club, Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Warner follows in the footsteps of Steve Smith, who stood down as skipper of the Rajasthan Royals for the upcoming season.

Both players are on IPL contracts worth A$2.4million as the highest-paid Australian players in the lucrative tournament.

Warner's decision comes off the back of the 31-year-old's involvement in the ball tampering sandal in Cape Town that has seen him suspended for the fourth Test in Johannesburg and sent home from South Africa.

"In light of recent events, David Warner has stepped down as captain of SunRisers Hyderabad. The new captain of the Team will be announced shortly," said the team's chief executive, K.Shanmugam.

Warner was Hyderabd's leading run-scorer in 2017 and guided his side to the title in 2016.

The left-hander is the tournament's all-time fifth-highest run-scorer and the most prolific overseas batsman in the competition's 10-year history.

With CA yet to issue its sanctions, Sunrisers mentor and India legend VVS Laxman said yesterday the franchise would take its time before commenting about Warner's future in Hyderabad.

"It's very unfortunate what has happened in the Cape Town Test, Laxman told PTI.

"As far as Sunrisers is concerned, it's too early for us to comment.

"Because, it was, just which has happened day before yesterday. We will wait for decision of Cricket Australia.

Laxman added: "The information available at the moment is very limited.

"So, we will wait for further information. If at all, the need be, then we will discuss about that.

"As far as Warner is concerned, he has been an exceptional leader for Sunrisers group."

Cricket Australia chief executive James Sutherland announced on Tuesday that the internal investigation into the ball tampering incident found Warner to be one of three players involved in planning to alter the condition of the ball on day three of the third Test at Newlands.

"Earlier today I received an update about the investigation being conducted by our Head of Integrity Iain Roy, and in conducting his interviews he was accompanied by two ICC integrity officers.

"While that investigation is not complete, preliminary findings have been considered and discussed by the CA board earlier today.

"The key finding is that prior knowledge of the ball tampering incident was limited to three players: Captain Steve Smith, vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft.

"No other players or support staff had prior knowledge and this includes Darren Lehmann who despite inaccurate media reports, has not resigned from his position.

"He will continue to coach the Australian men's team under his current contract."

CA is set to hand down further sanctions today.
