US speeds up deployment of thousands more Marines, sailors to Middle East

The Pentagon is speeding up the deployment of thousands of additional Marines and sailors to the Middle East amid speculation that the Trump administration could send troops into Iranian territory.

The 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), made up of at least 2,200 Marines, set off from San Diego aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer on Wednesday, sooner than expected, according to multiple reports.


Reuters reported that the troops departed the U.S. about three weeks ahead of schedule.

A Pentagon official told The Hill that due to operations security, it does not discuss “future or hypothetical movements.”

U.S. Central Command, which manages forces in the Middle East, also declined to comment as it “will not speculate on future force posture, or discuss movements that are not in our [area of operation].

The additional Marines would head to the Gulf region less than a week after another unit of 2,200 Marines and sailors left for the area aboard the Japan-based USS Tripoli.

Satellite images showed the Tripoli along with two escort ships were traveling southwest across the South China Sea on March 15. The ship carries personnel from the 31st MEU, which contains ground and aerial combat units.

The movements come as President Trump has denied the United States is sending more troops to the Middle East.


“No, I’m not putting troops anywhere,” Trump said Thursday at the White House when asked whether he intends to send more service members to the region.

“If I were, I certainly wouldn’t tell you,” he continued, before adding that the U.S. “will do whatever’s necessary to keep the price” of oil down.

Should the Boxer and Tripoli reach the Gulf region, they will join the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group which has been part of the U.S. bombing campaign on Iran. The USS Gerald R. Ford was also in the area but is being sent to Crete for repairs after a fire aboard it last week.

They plan to take kharg and use that to pressurize Iran to open the strait. They will capture kharg at some losses. But I don't think it will work out the way they think.

Put yourself in Iran's shoe. They know they are fucked royally. Their only lever is strait of hormitz. If they give up the strait...oil returns normal and us can either go on hitting them or just say we are done. Iran has to rebuild and could get hit anytime in future.

On the other hand ...if the hold the strait and ignores the kharg island..other than hitting the deployments there... Iranian oil stops flowing which increase the price of oil. Strait remains closed and now Iran can strike the Gulf infra...the war goes in their favor. Yes they lose oil revenue but their condition is already bad.

I doubt if the US wants to destroy the oil infra there. But iran just might blow it up as last resort.

On the other hand is might try to capture the shoreline...that is gonna be tough with such few soldiers.

A White House official told CBS News that the U.S. military "can take out" Iran's Kharg Island "at any time," and said President Trump "retains all options."

The comment was made in response to an Axios report that the administration is considering plans to blockade or occupy Kharg Island to pressure Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The report cites four sources who have knowledge of the issue.

The statement from the White House official doesn't deny or confirm the report, saying Mr. Trump "has no plans to send troops anywhere – but he wisely does not broadcast his military strategy to the media, and he retains all options as Commander-in-Chief."

Kharg Island, roughly 20 miles off Iran's northern Gulf coast, has served as the country's main oil export terminal for decades. If its loading facilities were knocked out, Iran's ability to export oil would collapse almost immediately.

If it's starving Iran of oil to force it to open hormitz .that won't fly as opening hormitz is defeat of Iran. It will starve Iran of oil but that will further increase oil price. So not sure what is the play here. Economic damage to Iran is moot given what has happened there.. destroying the island faculties is also not in us s Interestbhut might be in Iran's interest in worst case scenario

Just read the post I wrote to which you replied. I dunno which post you are referring to but I categorically said occupying kharg island is not going to open up strait of Hormuz as that's defeat for Israel. They are going to take the pain and try to inflict more pain economicslly to make the oil price go up.

There is a difference between two situations. In Ind-Pak case, he claimed to have stopped the war but there was no way for anyone to prove it one way for other. It was open for inferences.

Here he is saying USA WILL not call for ceasefire. So if they do ceasefire now, he will be proven false and a liar. So this hold much more gravity.

USbisbeinning militsryw ar decisively and pulverizing Iran..there is 0 comparison to what Iran is retaliatnf and what is has done. But since this was a useless war that is not needed and Iran is hitting the economic choke points and it has political fall outs...us is losing the political and economic war. If they want boots on the ground...us will destroy Iran but they will take heavy casualties. That's the reason he wants a ceasefire and Iran has nothing left to lose beyond the regime.

The paks think doing. Ceasefire is a sign of defeat...little these idiots know that strong countries hit achieve their objective and get out of war because there is nothing else to achieve or additional cost of life is not worth it. It's kans are brave and strong..hence they will fight for other countries..4 days or 4 hours are enough to put them in their place.

Bringing the economy in those city states to a standstill was one of their leverages. I wonder if it's just an Eid break or something else that has happened in the background.

The major Gulf airlines - Qatar, Emirates, etc. have announced a FULL resumption of schedules from March 28-29. So I wonder if they too know something we don't.
