What's new

Stranger Things

Watched the finale this morning.

Despite a slow start, season 3 ended strongly and with greater emotional depth than seen previously.

The writers have the gang split up into the usual groups in season 3 and the finale is no exception. Whilst it's necessary given the large cast of characters - I feel the character relationships aren't as well fleshed out as a result, neither is the impact of these events on the families. You sometimes forget Nancy is Mike's sister, Lucas is Erica's brother or Karen and Ted are Mike's parents because they barely say a word to each other ! Joyce was Will's overprotective mother but in season 3 they hardly interact.

Nevertheless, the action was intense and the Mind Flayer looks as horrifying as ever with no expense spared on production.

Why didn't they use firecrackers on the Mind Flayer earlier ? Haven't we already established heat is its kryptonite ?

If you're a big fan of Hopper punching his way out of trouble, Season 3 doesn't disappoint with a rather comical Soviet version of Arnold being his foil.

Hopper's heroic act of self sacrifice would be cheapened if he's revived, but the huge Hopper fan in me doesn't mind he's likely being held in the Upside Down.

The Soviets made for generic villains with no depth whatsoever. It's never explained what their motivations are. I felt Brenner made for a more interesting villain.

Hopper's monologue at the end was very powerful. The characters have a shared trauma and their first experiences of grief in their young lives. It kinda reminded me of US school shooting survivors as they play upon the loss of childhood innocence. There's also the grief of dislocation but life comes with hurt - and growing up means accepting that hurt, using it to become better and stronger individuals.

8/10 for the finale, and 7/10 for Season 3.

Is there a recap video for season 1 and 2 out there, I need to see that before season 3

Don’t think so. Most of the videos are about theories and stuff, you should binge them again.

Will was underutilized in season 3. All he did was complain about not getting to play D&D and touch his neck when the Mind Flayer was around.

His actor is brilliant and deserves to have a bigger impact. Hopefully he will be play a more pivotal role next season, especially if they end up in the upside down.

I reckon he will.

Eleven and Will will probably be the most important characters next season.

The whole squad will go to the Upside Down to rescue Hop.

3rd season was rubbish IMO. Sick and tired of the Russian / Cold War conspiracy theories and the idea of 3 teenagers toppling and giving the runaround to an entire Russian base is laughable / nonsensical at best.

That being said - enjoyed the character development of everyone except Will and Eleven :)

When is the new series being released?

1st volume of season 4 is making quite a buzz with the higest netflix viewing ever. Really liked it with much darker tone this time. Wasn't expecting it to be as good as the other 3 seasons but it has surpassed all I believe. Episode 7 was quite remarkable with the twist.... give it a go Stranger Things fans

As I said in the other thread, this series has become rinse, repeat..repetitive since S2. Could have easily ended at S3. Each episode of S4 is well over 1hr.

S1- 9/10
S2- 6/10
S3- 5/10
S4 V1- 5/10

Much more adult themed horror, a bit of homage to the nightmare on elm street series and cameo from Robert Englund to go with it.

I love it so far, it’s a bit slow in patches but overall pretty good. Can’t wait for the final two episodes to come out.

I've watched one and a half episodes of the new season and I'm enjoying it.

I wasn't sure how it would be and thought maybe this will be a season too far, but so far so good.

Finished the new episodes in Season 4.

I've enjoyed watching this over the years but I struggled to stay interested in the recent episodes.

It seemed to be a case of longer episodes containing more of the stuff we have seen in earlier seasons.

Maybe the novelty has died out.

Too good. Stranger things is this generation's harry potter. Will have a long lasting effect on an entire generation i feel.

S4 is by far the best season so far, it blows S2 and S3 out of the water. I've binged the entire show in the past month and caught up on the most recent episode. Can't believe didn't bother seeing this show before.

They've used Will even less in S4 than they did in S3. Will, Jonathan, and Mike have been useless in season 4.

I have a feeling that Jonathan and Mike will play a role in Utah in the second half. That story line so far seems to be going nowhere at all and is bound to gain importance at some point.

Honestly, I find those characters boring at this point. I don't know what the writers were thinking when they made Jonathan a pothead. Jonathan peaked in S1 when his character actually had some sort of a personality.

Mike has been plain annoying this season.

The latest season of Netflix Inc’s Stranger Things has pushed total viewership for the series to more than 1.15 billion hours, the streaming service said on Tuesday.

The science-fiction drama starring Winona Ryder and Millie Bobby Brown has become the most popular English-language series on Netflix. The only other Netflix show to cross 1 billion viewing hours is South Korean drama Squid Game.

Stranger Things also hit #1 on Netflix’s Top 10 lists in 91 countries, a first for an English-language TV series, the company said.

The show’s fourth season concluded with the final two episodes released last week, briefly crashing the Netflix app as fans rushed to view it. The series debuted in 2016.

Earlier in August 2020, when the pandemic hit, the creators of the cult-hit show confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter that it will continue after season four.

"Season 4 won't be the end. We know what the end is, and we know when it is," said co-creator Ross Duffer. "The pandemic has given us time to look ahead, figure out what is best for the show. Starting to fill that out gave us a better idea of how long we need to tell that story," he added.

Well I had given up on this after getting a bit bored with it, but decided to watch the latest 2 episodes and I'm glad I had a change of heart.

Over 1 hour and then the last episode was over 2 hours but both were very watchable.
