Stray dog bites two coaches at Jawaharlal Nehru stadium during training

Ahead of the Para Athletics Championships, a formal request was made on August 21, 2025, to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to clear stray dogs from the stadium premises.

On the morning of October 3, 2025, a stray dog inside the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi bit two coaches, Japanese coach Meiko Okumatsu and Kenyan coach Dennis Maragia, while they were overseeing training at the practice track.

Preventive Measures and Ongoing Challenges

Ahead of the Para Athletics Championships, a formal request was made on August 21, 2025, to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to clear stray dogs from the stadium premises. The Organising Committee confirmed, “Acting swiftly, the MCD cleared the premises well before the start of the Championships, and dog-catching vehicles have been stationed at the stadium from Day 1 to ensure constant vigilance and immediate response.”

Despite these efforts, the Committee explained that “the challenge of individuals repeatedly feeding stray dogs near the venue has allowed animals to re-enter the premises,” leading to the unfortunate incidents involving the coaches at the warm-up track.

Immediate Medical Response

Okumatsu and Maragia were promptly treated with on-site medical aid at the athlete’s medical room. They were then transported to Safdarjung Hospital for further treatment before being taken back to their hotels. Dr. Ish Middha of the Medical Committee told reporters, “Two coaches were bitten in the morning session. After I cleaned and dressed their wounds, I took them to Safdarjang Hospital, where we followed the medical protocol for dog bites.”

The treatment was administered on the assumption that the dog was unvaccinated.

Ongoing Animal Control and Safety Measures

The Organising Committee highlighted that the MCD has stationed two dedicated dog-catching teams permanently inside the stadium, equipped with vehicles for quick removal and safe transfer of stray dogs to shelters. They emphasized that “all captured animals are being relocated in line with strict animal welfare norms, ensuring both safety and humane treatment.”

While prioritizing animal welfare, the Committee stressed that “the safety, health, and well-being of participants is non-negotiable.” They also confirmed that the stadium and its surroundings have been thoroughly sanitized in cooperation with civic agencies and that enhanced preventive measures are now in place.

Round-the-Clock Vigilance to Secure Championships

“The Organising Committee underscores… Two on-site teams, supported by stationed vehicles, continue round-the-clock operations to ensure there is no compromise on participant safety and the successful hosting of the World Para Athletics Championships 2025,” the statement concluded.

World Para Athletics clarified that the incident falls under the jurisdiction of the Local Organising Committee and not their own.

Stray dog problem is huge in India. If government tries to round them up and kill them, all the animal lovers will protest and create chaos in all major cities.

Mad dogs are everywhere in India. I don’t know where these coaches were chilling, it’s a dangerous place to go for early morning walks or jogs. Dogs will not leave you alone.

And the indian defense starts.......
No defending this stray dog problem. It’s a menace and every street has at least 5 or 6 stray dogs. Many are mistreated and they do not get fed. They become very aggressive because of all the neglect and abuse. Many fall victims to these stray dog bites. People should carry a stick or some kind of weapon if they are going for a early morning or late night walks or jogs.

There is no easy solution for this. Be like China and implement laws ruthlessly or be like India and do nothing about this other than a few eye washing measures here and there.

How can this happen? No security?
Dogs do not use the entrance that humans use to get into the stadium. They know that area very well and they can jump over the walls and fences easily.
Issue is not security at the stadium. Issue is millions of dogs roaming like thugs in large groups all over the country. Until that is addressed, these incidents keep on happening. Dogs don’t care if the person they are biting is a guest from a foreign nation. There are hundreds of dog biting cases everyday in all cities and towns across India.

NCR has a huge stray dog problem, it ruined years of every kids life and old people’s life as well.

Society and government both have to be blamed, government more so than society. The government had turned blind eye for years and only now when the menace is totally out of control they even bothered to look into this problem, smart Indians are ruled by inferior, low IQ, corrupt politicians and government employees who get in by bribing politicians, that’s why most leave the country when they get a chance.

It is very difficult to manage all these dogs everywhere but they should have safe areas where all these coaches and athletes can go and can't go. I wonder how much priority the authorities are giving to these people and this event overall.

Why have they turned a blind eye? Is it religiously motivated or just bad management?

You can't really blame the authorities in this case, because whenever they try to catch stray dogs, the so-called dog lovers come out to protest. These same people, who eat meat themselves, quickly disappear when asked to adopt even one stray dog because what they actually want are foreign breed dogs in their homes. :inti

Nothing religious about it, just corruption and bad management. The money which went for animal department in government offices was mostly pocketed by corrupt officers, since no one knew or cared about animal welfare.
Eventually when the dog menace went out of control and it became news, people started raising voices that the government woke up and tried to vaccinate dogs, but by then it was too little too late. A lot of “dog lovers” popped up in metro cities who feed strays but don’t want to take them home nor care about what happens to the strays before/after they have fed them.

Authorities are to be blamed 100%.
They pocketed the funds of decades meant for sterilisation, capturing dogs etc to ensure population remains under control.

If they had done their job properly from start we wouldn’t have been in this situation.

Now they are diverting blame to dog lovers when the entire problem Is because of their corruption/incompetence.

That's interesting. In some places in Turkey there is dogs and cats roaming around but they are sterilized and it is due to religious/cultural issues. They took a lot of them off the streets through forced sterlization and even putting some down and there was backlash but the government went through with it.

I thought in India its perhaps related to Hindu beliefs but it sounds like classic corruption.

Stray dogs are a problem even in Pakistan, although not as much as before. I developed my fear of dogs due to stray dogs in Pakistan. I hate dogs.

If there are good enough shelters, no one has issues with dogs being moved. You can't throw them away like garbage.

And stray indies being adopted is very common now. I worked with hundreds over the years, so I have witnessed that change.

Blame bjp for this under the influence of their rbod animal activist leader bjp passed the stupid law that prevents the tackling of the stray dog menace.

Such a shame.

Animal rights activists especially dog lovers are extremely stupid. They would rather let kids and old people get attacked by dogs than cull these dogs for good.

Extremely stupid doesnt even start to describe them

When supreme court ordered the removal of of stay dogs from delhi

The nautanki these activists did was nauseating.
These

Dig activists have been emboldened by political support of this bjp leader.

India experiences over 10,000 dog bites per day and 3.7 million bites every year.

But animal rights activists do not care about people. Their brain is filled with dog poo.

Animal lovers (dog to be specific) are a menace in india. Stray animals stay afloat because of these folks as laws favor them. Sometimes Chinese model authoritarian ruling might be better than democracy
:facepalm

Animal rights is part of most free societies these days, it didn't used to be a major consideration in the subcontinent, but with Indians mostly taking their cues from western society, they are starting to ape their behaviour. It is a good thing in many ways, in Pakistan animals are treated as disposable, so some form of kindness is a good thing. Unfortunately India only mimics the feelgood stuff from the west, the organisation and infrastructure goes missing.

Most of them were protesting just for the camera and social media reels. But when asked to take even one stray dog home and take responsibility, they ran away. :inti

Oh, it's becoming common now? There are around 8-10 lakh stray dogs in Delhi alone. How many of them are actually being adopted by these so called dog lovers? :inti

I didn't know the gravity of this issue until I saw some youtube videos yesterday. Seems to be lots of dogs and cows and stuff roaming Indias streets in major cities, how do people live like this?

India is ahead of the west in this regard. They have 3 times elected a stray to bark as PM.

In England these social media do-gooder types are referred to as "luvvies". I respect their views to some extent, they mean well, but often they have an unrealistic idea of how the world operates.

Indian version are probably just western wannabes who probably converse more in English than their own language. For them this is about virtue signalling than actual welfare of animals.

To be fair, if it is part of their religious belief and culture, then who are we to tell them their business? As long as they are happy with it, good for them.

But then they should probably not be hosting international events if it is going to impact safety of guests and competitors. These dogs could have rabies, and foreigners are not going to shrug their shoulders and accept it as karma.

Only cows are part of the belief, no one wants to harm them hence they are left on their own when they are old. But we have gosalas for those as well so things are improving. Dogs are the major menace, even on the national highways everyday you see so many of them crushed. Its sad.

So PCT is quite lucky....

After dirty food for Cricketers, sewage water leaked at Delhi airport, where West Indies players were also seen worried , this is Shameful Thankfully Pakistan's women team is in Sri lanka.
