Suggestion for a good car

Looks like the Audi Q5 is first choice at the moment.

Although I do like the Mercedes GLC Coupe - the only problem with this is the boot space.

Have you considered a Range Rover or a Land Rover Defender? The true kings of the Road.

Best of British. They are like space shuttles on wheels, just unfortunately very expensive, particularly the behemoth that is the Range Rover. When I was much much younger I had a valeting job at a Land Rover garage and got to ride in a few of these beauties. It’s the dream one day to purchase one of my own! :)

I love the new Defender. Tough as a tank and with lots of gadgets too.

Just pointless unless you’re a Dalesman or a crofter up in the Nevis Range.

No longer best of British!
Now owned by Tata and their reliability and after sales service has dropped like a lead balloon!

I have a Range Rover Vogue... it goes back to the garage every three to four months....
I have fought with the dealer and have have spoken and sent emails to Range Rover head office..
They do absolutely nothing.

This is my third Range Rover and, although the drive is absolutely sublime, I will never a buy another one.

Quite like the Audi Q3, Audi Q5, Jaguar F-pace and Mercedes GLC at the moment.

Usually the Mercedes has better performance in a SuV. But Q5 beats the GLC hands down. But do compare the features and not the drive only.

Is the latest defender in UK upto date with features? In India, while the car is robust and everything it lacks certain features that a BMW x5 provides.

check out the new Genesis SUV's. Designed by the same guy who designed the Bentayga. Amazing cars with lots of absolutely great tech and coming much cheaper than GLC/GLE and X3/X5.

I don't include Audi in the above because Audi SUV's are not that good to be honest. Very vanilla cars that lack the luxury feel and the driving power that Merc and BMW offer.

Genesis is going to be a very good competitor to these cars specially considering what is being offered at the price point.

In love with that truck ever since I saw it in the Bond movie!

Well, X5 is a “soft” SUV for cities and the highway.

Defender is designed to climb mountains, scale rivers, cross mud and snow so will have lots of displays about surface hardness and degree of slip and tilt angles and so on.

Porsche Taycan cross Turismo.

I’ve had a Audi Q8 for 3 years so I will go for something different and try the electric experience and this one looks better than a Tesla though it is expensive I will go for it as you only live once.

ELECTRIC PORSCHE BREAKS BATTERY RECORD BY DRIVING FROM LA TO NEW YORK WITH JUST 2.5 HOURS OF CHARGE

——

It’s defn not going to be worth having non electric cars in future unless battery prices are driven through the roof.

Am saving up a few quid and then will go on the hunt for the BMW 130i for two reasons, I like hatchbacks and also the glorious inline 6 naturally aspirated N52 engine. There weren’t many 130i’s made so it is a bit tricky to get the right spec. It’s meant to be decent for parts and you can do bits/bobs yourself when it comes to servicing. It’s the first hatchback in history with the 6 cylinders and while the modern turbocharged hatchbacks like the 135i and 140i are a bit more powerful, a naturally aspirated peach just sounds way better.

Going to make the most of it temporarily while I can before ending up with an SUV of some sort for obvious reasons like most of you good folk 😂

It’s a tough one to say, will the cost of fuel outweigh the enjoyment of owning a petrol car or will it not matter because battery’s will be expensive as you say?

In the UK post 2030 the sale of new cars will all have to be electric but will still be able to purchase used petrols/diesels, I’d say we got some time to play until the 2040’s perhaps when most likely a big chunk of the used cars will get scrapped.

Those owning classic vehicles will need to do the same unless they are filthy rich and happy to convert them to electric cars, but it kinda defeats the purpose in a way besides sentimental feelings, I saw a Tesla engine swap with an E30, would be cool to own if you win the lottery :yk

Have you considered a Range Rover or a Land Rover Defender? The true kings of the Road.

Land Rover Defender is a bit big for what I want.

A friend of mine bought a Range Rover a couple of years ago from new and he's had a lot of problems with it which put me off a bit.

I liked the GLC Coupe but the family don't like the fact that we will lose boot space.

There are some things the Q5 is better than the GLC and vice versa, it's a tough choice.

The issue I have with GLC and Q5 is the looks.

I prefer the Range or the X6, both look stunning. But of course there are lot of other considerations, reliability etc.

The Q5 Black edition is smart, with all the extra features in a black finish.

Looks nice.

oh man, there's something special about BMW inline-6s, they just so finely balanced, but id be very careful about attempting to bits, bobs urself, I thought I could do some on my 530d, and once I opened the engine I was like no chance, what I needed eventually need a proper mechanic who pulled the entire engine out. my mechanical involvement ended up being limited to replacing some bulbs in the rear lights in the end, lol.

That’s certainly noted, I’d defo not get too adventurous when it comes to resolving common issues, plus you do want a receipt for work done which you can use to sell later on down the line. Have you ever been on the BMW doctor youtube channel meant to be good, another one is called George Austers - the guy has amazing mechanical knowledge and he has videos on resolving all the major and minor issues on the N52 engine/130i, have a look at the N52 playlist - wonder what you’d make of if or if it would be encouraging to take on a job or two, this is a general servicing one:

https://youtu.be/DeaXXNxoDW4

I partly feel if you have a used BMW you need to safely learn how to oil changes imo as the intervals between when BMW advise them is a bit too long. But that’s a great channel.

Yes a BMW with the classic straight 6 set up is glorious!! as we move into the current era, I fear their golden years are behind them but a big part of that will be due to electric adoption

Awesome car bro.

Last week I got myself a 2013 Toyita Yaaris Hybrid :P

Nothing fancy but considering I am a new driver, the car is very good.

Automatic and works in hybrid technology.

£0 Road tax

I also got myself a telemanics black box insurance...so it saved me few bucks.

Always best to start with a smaller car, good for insurance and to gain experience.

I remember my first car was a little Nissan :)

Congrats, lovely motor.

Not sure if its up north but in Bham we now have a congestion charge in the city centre for diesals. I forgot , was fined £60 for driving through a few streets!

is it smart to buy a hybrid or electric in Pakistan? or should we stay on petrol cars?

Keeping in mind that as lithium batteries arn't manufactured here and import tax is very high on them.

Hybrid is fine. Once the car has fuel it will charge the battery when running.

but considering the fact that lithium battery isn't made in Pakistan and has to be imported, plus due to high import tax on lithium battery and the dollar to ruppees value, would it be good decision to go for hybrid?

Because, after some years arn't hybrid car batteries suppose to be replaced?

If you buy from a dealership, they will offer you a number of years guarantee. Some dealers are offering anywhere between 5-10 years or 70-100k on the milage. The only concern would be if you want to keep the car for longer than the warranty on the battery.

but does guarantee mean that battery gets replaced without cost? or is it just accidental coverage but not for spare part maintenances?

Thanks for these tips though

Yes they will replace free of charge if its within the years timeframe or less than milage, usually 100k.

Petrol and Diesal is going to rise more and more in the coming years. Here in the UK we are paying £1.40 per litre (avg)! Most of this is tax, its disgusting but the only way is up not down now.

I will get a hybrid this year along with my usual car to save on fuel.

Do you have to put adblue in it every few months?

I'm sure your diesel will be just great!
But Land Rover sold me a Range Rover diesel and I can't begin to tell you the problems I've had with it.
They didn't tell me I would have to do motor way driving every few days otherwise you get particulate filter issues...

The car has been back to the dealers every few months since I bought it in 2019.
Their service has been shoddy and now they are trying to charge me for every visit even though it's still under warranty.

That tends to be a big problem with diesels and their DPF in general mate, especially if they haven’t been serviced properly. Did you obtain full service history when you bought the car, what was the age / mileage ? also, if you drive mainly around the city, you should get a petrol instead.

It’s good you have the warranty, hopefully get it sorted through there and I’d personally consider potentially selling if its not going to be economical for you, that’s the thing with diesels on paper great for mpg etc but then there’s ULEZ charges and reliability issues, and with a big brand the aftermarket will cost you an arm and a leg

Got a big beast of a diesel car in March 2020. Its been sitting on the driveway with hardly any miles.

Not done any motorway miles because I didn't really have anywhere to go during lockdown.....

I have had to put 10L of ad blue but am hoping to get shot of it before any major dpf issues....

Was eyeing up a Land Rover, the new defender in particular but will steer away.

Wa strangely torn between that and a tesla but the teslas cost some serious money, and while they peform well, I cant justify the spend at the moment.

This is my third Range Rover and I will not buy one again that's how disappointed I am in Land Rover.
I have spoken and emailed the head office, the dealership, made so many phone calls too and I get nothing back from them other then it's the way I drive, I.e I need to drive it on the motorway...

I can't begin to tell you how frustrated I am.
It's going in again on Tuesday and I am very tempted to just leave it there until they find a solution.

My advice, go with the Tesler X.

I drove one the other day and I don't think I have ever driven a big SUV with such torc,
Also you can get the 6 seater option which is handy for the bigger families...
I think my next car will either be this or an E Tron.

2015
15,000 miles
Two year warranty which I extended.
Full service history

I've had it serviced with the dealership ever since.

It's now due back there on Tuesday because three weeks back the engine light came on and then it states
"No Engine restarts in 540 miles. diesel exhaust fluid dosing malfunction". This is the first time this has happened. So I checked the AdBlue and that was fine.

It was fully serviced at the end of September 2021 and the service notification came on in December.
Booked in and when I got there they just stuck their handheld computer and re-set it.

Had to wait three weeks for this appointment.

I am absolutely fed up.

Man you’ve got some bad luck there because it’s a low mileage car which is fairly new and it appears it has been serviced correctly, absolutely take full advantage of that warranty and go out of your way to ensure that.

Good luck with the sale, stay away from Rangey’s lol

I dropped it off to them yesterday and it's still not ready!

Never again

There's a sensor on the dashboard which will tell me when it needs topping up.

A friend of mine had similar issues with his Range Rover and that's why I avoided going for one.

Good choice to go with the diesel engine. He is right about the fuel economy and the value for the money. But, "better drive" is subjective. Generally, vehicles with petrol engines run smoother than their diesel counterparts. However, in the luxury segment, the difference is minimized by the manufacturers. Enjoy your Q5. Wishing you safe and fun drive.

It was interesting as the sales guys at Mercedes, BMW and Audi all said the diesel option was better for the type of car I was going for. I valued that as at the end of the day they are impartial in terms of whether they want to sell petrol or diesel cars.

got myself a polestar a few months ago, thought id give a little review of the car and electric life

the car itself is really nice, the fit and finish feels minimalistic but quality, the touch screen looks a bit old but does everything perfectly so far, went for the upgraded sound system which is brilliant, plus the 360 camera is a life changer. dont know how i was parking without it before, lol.

the powertrain is decent, around 7 seconds 0-60, range of roughly 250 miles, dont really do many long trips so hasnt been a huge problem, instant torque is amazing for overtaking, and the adaptive cruise control has worked perfectly so far.

exterior, i love the angular look, polestar are headed by a designer and it shows, they churn out nice looking cars with amazing consistency, every angle i like how it looks. the small windows and wide rear haunches give it a muscular look that i like.

negatives, the weight, it is a burly car, and you can tell, riding on 245mm tires front and back, the stiffer suspension certainly isnt the most comfortable ride on bad roads, and the car is not sporty in any way at all.

overall, i would give it an 8/10 so far as a city car, does everything with minimal fuss, looks are subjective but i love it, but lacks any emotion or excitement.

i charge it at home overnight, 12 hours gets me about 45% from a 3 pin, which is about 100 miles range, which is enough for a week for me, have a fast charger down the road which costs double but does about 60%, or 150 miles in an hour, which isnt really an issue cos i can leave the car and just walk back home.

I had a 2018 Honda Civic and I switched to 2023 Hyundai Elantra. Very pleased with my decision.

Comfortable, reliable and aesthetically pleasing as most Hyundai cars are.

I have Honda Civic 2015 model.. trust me no other car i found that much reliable than this one.
Great car indeed in terms of performance and reliability, but pales in comparison to the 2016 Civic in terms of aesthetics.

I switched from Civic 2013 (same shape as 2015) to Civic 2018 and the upgrade was huge.

Yeah you will get better fuel economy in that specific model 2018 and the aerodynamics of that car are also great.

The only negative thing I found in that car is the dashboard and speedometer which they should have upgraded because I think the 2015 model has a better one.

Civic after 2005 became incredibly ugly aesthetically (aside from the fd2 variant) until the 2022 model which is the most pleasing to the eye out of all Honda cars of the past 2 decades.

But performance wise, it’s always been one of the best models in the world since its inception. Whether you are just someone looking for something reliable or a car nerd looking for a project car. Civic is very hard to beat.
