GENEVA/LONDON (Reuters) - A suicide bomber killed 27 members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards on Wednesday, state media said, in a southeastern region where security forces are facing a rise in attacks by militants from the country's Sunni Muslim minority.

The Sunni group Jaish al Adl (Army of Justice), which says it seeks greater rights and better living conditions for the ethnic minority Baluchis, claimed responsibility for the attack, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

The heavy losses among Iran's premier military force prompted a senior Revolutionary Guards commander to issue a warning to the country's foes.

"Our response in defense of the Islamic Revolution will not be limited to our borders," Ali Fadavi was quoted as saying by Fars.

"The enemies will receive a very firm response from the Revolutionary Guards like before." He did not specify which enemies or what actions Tehran would take.

In the past Iran has accused its regional rival, Sunni Arab Saudi Arabia, of supporting Sunni separatist groups who have attacked its security forces. Riyadh has denied the charges.

Iran’s Shi’ite Muslim authorities say militant groups operate from safe havens in Pakistan and have repeatedly called on the neighboring country to crack down on them.

A suicide bomber driving a vehicle laden with explosives attacked a bus transporting members of the Guards, the force said in a statement. Thirteen people were wounded.

A video posted by Fars showed blood and debris at the site of the attack on a road in a volatile area near the Pakistan border where militants and armed drug smugglers operate.

The bus was turned into a twisted pile of metal, a photo published on Fars showed. Reuters could not independently verify the image.

While Sunni militant groups are not regarded as a major threat, the attack dealt a fresh blow to Iran’s security establishment, which has often said it can repel any threat no matter how big, even from the United States and its ally Israel.

MILITARY MIGHT AND BUSINESS INTERESTS

The assault in impoverished Sistan-Baluchistan province - among the worst ever on the Guards - illustrated that Iran’s elite force, which answers directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, can be vulnerable to guerrilla-style operations.

The Guards' estimated 125,000-strong military, with army, navy and air units, has acted as the sword and shield of Shi’ite clerical rule in Iran since its 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The force also operates outside of Iran's borders in countries such as Iraq and Syria where it works with proxies to promote Tehran's interest. It runs a business empire in Iran worth billions of dollars.

"The self-sacrificing military and intelligence children of the people of Iran will take revenge for the blood of the martyrs of this incident," Fars quoted Foreign ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi as saying.

Iran’s Guards fired missiles at Islamic State militants in Syria in 2017 and 2018 after the group claimed responsibility for two attacks in Tehran and Ahvaz. In 2018, the Guards launched missiles at an Iranian Kurdish armed opposition group in northern Iraq.

Wednesday's violence comes during a month in which Iran has been commemorating the 1979 Islamic Revolution which swept the U.S.-backed Shah from power. Tehran showed off ballistic missiles in defiance of U.S. efforts to curb its military power. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif appeared to blame the United States for the attack, citing a U.S.-sponsored conference in Warsaw aimed at rallying support to further isolate Iran.

On Twitter he asked: "Is it no coincidence that Iran is hit by terror on the very day that #WarsawCircus begins?"

Iran had enjoyed relative stability compared to Arab neighbors who have grappled with political and economic upheaval touched off by popular uprisings in 2011.

But economic hardships fueled by U.S. sanctions have triggered waves of protests that sometimes call for Iran's clerical leaders to step down.

Twelve members of the Guards were among 25 people killed last autumn by gunmen on a military parade in the city of Ahvaz in the southwest. The Sunni Islamic State and an Arab separatist group both claimed responsibility.

Jaish al-Adl emerged as the main armed opposition movement in the southeast after members of another Sunni group, Jundullah, joined it after their leader was captured on a plane in 2010. He was tried and executed.

IK needs to shut down all those terror cells that cause mayhem on both East and West side of Pak borders.

They haven't made any such statement, Iran and Pakistan have cordial relations. The news article didn't even cite a source for that statement, no references either, that's poor journalism.

Many other articles are reporting the same thing. If you go back a few months, Iran also warned Pakistan regarding this and threatened surgical strikes.

Iran isnt stupid, they know their history. CIA used Jundallah against them via Balochistan. They know it's not Pakistan but other enemies who are at play here.

It easy to blame Pakistan for its own incompetence.

Lol.

Terror attack in Iran and Iran is incompetent and doesnt know how to manage its resources.

Terror attack in Pakistan and it must be Mossad, RAW, CIA as we don't harbor terrorists in our country.

The hypocrisy and double standards are almost like "mud, head, sand."

Pakistan has bent over backwards trying to remain neutral with Iran and Arabs especially when it came to Yemen. The countries that have been calling Iran to be bombed are its Western neighbors. Makes zero sense for us to attack them in any way.

But if this is how they're going to go, I'd shed all neutrality when it comes to Iran.

Suddenly we are getting visit from a nation pledging to fund our economy and attacks happen in both the countries, rolleyes.

So the Saudi crown Prince is coming and both our neighbours are attacked. Coincidence? No chance!

I know, one neighbor who openly claims to want to isolate us by making sure noone does any trade with us and the other neighbor who is sworn enemies with the guest arriving in our country.

Yea, and whenever there has been unfortunate attacks in Pakistan in the past, you guys have blamed your own incompetent for it instead of blaming other forces.

Now what?

Iran warns Pakistan to crack down on Jaish al-Adl

Iran's Revolutionary Guard commander has warned Pakistan to crack down on armed group Jaish al-Adl following a suicide attack in the border province of Sistan-Baluchestan that killed 27 members of the elite security force.

Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Chief-Commander Mohammad Ali Jafari said on Saturday that Islamabad should go after the armed group right away before Tehran takes its "revenge".

"If Pakistan fails to punish them in the near future, Iran will do so based on international law and will retaliate against the terrorists," Jafari was quoted by Iranian media as saying.

His statement was in a different tone to an earlier reaction where he called on the "brotherly state of Pakistan" to tighten security along its border with Iran.

The comment comes as Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman heads to Pakistan to hold talks with Prime Minister Imran Khan and top Pakistani officials.

Jafari said Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are "conspiring" with the United States and the "Zionist regime" to foment attacks, such as Wednesday's suicide bombing, which also left at least 13 Revolutionary Guard members injured.

"The patience that we have practised in the past towards Saudi Arabia and the UAE, who commit these actions, will change," Jafari added.

'A warning from Iran'

Reza Khaasteh, a Tehran-based journalist, said Jafari's latest statement, particularly on Pakistan, is "very harsh" as it "directly blames Islamabad" for the attack.

Mohammad Farahani, editor-in-chief of Mizan Online, however, pointed out that the statement was more of a warning than an accusation.

"He doesn't mean Pakistan is supporting the terrorists. He has warned them to be more serious about the situation, because these terrorists are using Pakistan as a shelter. Pakistan officials must do much more to secure the border," Farahani told Al Jazeera.

On Friday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani told reporters that unless Pakistan did more to crack down on Jaish al-Adl, Iran will take action it "deems appropriate".

Iran shares an almost 1,000km border with Pakistan. In the past, Tehran has been careful in addressing security issues, including deadly cross-border attacks and abductions.

"It's not yet clear whether Iran's response to the Wednesday attack would be an extra-territorial operation," said Khaasteh, pointing to the recent deals between the Rouhani government and Imran Khan's administration.

Last November, Abdelreza Rahmani-Fazli, Iran's interior minister, had hinted that Iranian forces could launch operations against "terrorists" in Pakistani territory in case Islamabad "fails to do its part".

History of violence

The Jaish al-Adl armed group has been launching deadly attacks against Iranian border guards since at least 2013, during which 14 Iranian forces were killed in an ambush near the border.

Its operation started after its parent group, the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Jundullah, was dissolved following the capture and execution of its leader, Abdolmalek Rigi, by Iran in 2010.

According to the SITE intelligence and security tracker, Jundullah had previously claimed receiving Saudi donation from an unnamed "philantrophist".

In one of its latest operations in October 2018, Jaish al-Adl abducted 12 Iranian security personnel near Zahedan, along the Iran-Pakistan border.

In that incident, Pakistani security forces helped Iran recover at least five of the 12 abductees from the armed group.

In 2014, at least five members of the Iranian security forces were also abducted.

Khaasteh said that like the Jundullah outfit, he expects Iran to "put an end to the brutal attacks" of Jaish al-Adl.

"But that requires Pakistan's cooperation," he said.

Whether or not the latest attack is also a provocation on Iran by "Saudi and Emirati sponsors of Jaish al-Adl", Khaasteh said he expects Tehran to give a "short-term response" to demonstrate to the public that it is taking action.

In response to previous attacks, Iran executed Jaish al-Adl prisoners, or launched retaliatory attacks against their positions inside Iranian territory.

Iran's southern border region with Pakistan has seen several attacks, including a suicide car bombing in the port city of Chabahar in December, which left four police officers dead and 42 others wounded.

In September, the Revolutionary Guard said it dismantled a "terrorist cell" and killed four fighters in Saravan, another city in Sistan-Baluchestan province.

In December 2010, 41 people were killed and 90 others wounded after a suicide attack near a mosque in Chabahar.

Other recent attacks in the country's south also include the deadly attack in Ahvaz that killed 29 people, many of them draftees of the Revolutionary Guard.

I think irrespective of that we need to realize you can't bomb a nuclear power's territory, even USA wouldn't really do it now , IRAN is more secretive and can do things because they somehow managed to even recruit people from Pak for their war in middle-east, our options are control border have better intelligence and try what we can at best in POK.

Imran should visit Iran after MBS's visit. There is trust deficit between both countries and that is being exploited by the third party.

Iran says Pakistan to 'pay high price' over attack, warns Saudi Arabia

DUBAI: Iran warned neighboring Pakistan on Saturday it would "pay a heavy price" for allegedly harboring militants who killed 27 of its elite Revolutionary Guards in a suicide bombing near the border earlier this week, state television reported.

Revolutionary Guards chief Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari also accused Tehran's regional rival Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates of supporting militant Sunni groups that attack Iranian forces, saying they could face "reprisal operations."

Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the UAE deny backing such militants.

"Why do Pakistan's army and security body ... give refuge to these anti-revolutionary groups? Pakistan will no doubt pay a high price," Jafari said in remarks live on state television.

Jafari was addressing a large crowd gathered for the funeral of the victims of Wednesday's suicide bombing, which took place in a southeastern region where security forces are facing a rise in attacks by militants from the country's Sunni minority.

"Just in the past year, six or seven suicide attacks were neutralized but they were able to carry out this one," Jafari told the mourners, who packed a square in the central city of Isfahan and roads leading to it.

The Sunni group Jaish al Adl (Army of Justice), which says it seeks greater rights and better living conditions for the ethnic minority Baluchis, claimed responsibility for the attack.

"The treacherous Saudi and UAE governments should know that Iran's patience has ended and we will no longer stand your secret support for these anti-Islam criminals," Jafari said.

"We will avenge the blood of our martyrs from the Saudi and UAE governments and ask the President [Hassan Rouhani] ... to leave our hands free more than ever for reprisal operations," Jafari told the crowd, drawing chants of "Allahu Akbar" (God is Greatest).

Iran's authorities say militant groups operate from safe havens in Pakistan and have repeatedly called on the neighboring country to crack down on them.

Jafari's remarks came amid heightening regional tensions after Israel and the Gulf Arab states attended a summit in the Polish capital Warsaw this week where the United States hoped to ratchet up pressure against Iran.

Brilliant timing for this statement. Trying to piggy back off of India's attempt at global political pressure but the facts are clear this statement is only due to the fact that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are building stronger ties and Iran is feeling insecure.

Yes it's all a conspiracy against Pakistan. :)))

US, Iran, India who all have openly slamming Pakistan, are in it together to hurt and weaken Pakistan globally.

Thankfully India have a few people like me and freelance bhai who are the voice of reason and can act sane without war mongering.

The last thing Pakistan needs is a third belligerent neighbour and another front opening up there. The sweeter than honey fourth neighbour can only be that sweet.

How long will Pak continue to harbor extremists on their soil is the question.

India, Afghanistan and now Iran are all blaming Pak. Cannot have all the neighbors pointing fingers at you.

Surely all these 3 are not conspiring against Pak.

Why is the entire world spreading this false narrative against land of the pure?

Politics. With Pakistan building stronger ties with Saudi and the UAE, Iran is worried. If you look in the region Iran has no one to rely on but India and Afghanistan. Iran is finding itself being isolated in the region. We all know of India's influence on post-Taliban Afghanistan, this is no surprise.

The loss of so many lives is sad regardless of what religion or nationality those people were. They do not deserve to become victims of silly politics but unfortunately this is what is happening. I just find it funny how every time near the elections something like this happens. This surely can't be a coincidence.

Pakistan haven't been threatening to destroy Iran. The Arabs and the Israeli have. Quite openly. We are the only Sunni nation to stay neutral in Yemen when even BD have succumbed to Arab pressure.

Don’t worry, nothing will happen. They will sort it out. Only angry neigbours Pakistan have is your country and the Indoamerican backed Afganis. This happens everywhere.

Iran summons Pakistan envoy over suicide bombing

TEHRAN: Iran’s foreign ministry summoned on Sunday the Pakistani ambassador after Tehran accused Islamabad of backing a group blamed for a suicide attack on its security forces.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran expects Pakistan’s government and army to seriously confront … the terrorist groups active on its border with Iran,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

An Iranian official at the ministry called on Pakistan to quickly take the necessary steps for the identification and arrest of the attack’s perpetrators.

The suicide bombing on Wednesday killed 27 members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards travelling on a bus in the volatile province of Sistan-Baluchistan, which straddles the border with Pakistan.

The attack was claimed by militant outfit Jaish al-Adl.

It was formed in 2012 as a successor to the Sunni extremist group Jundallah, which waged a deadly insurgency for a decade before it was severely weakened by the capture and execution of its leader Abdolmalek Rigi in 2010.

Iran Revolutionary Guards commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari on accused “Pakistan’s security forces” of supporting the perpetrators of the suicide bombing.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has also linked the perpetrators of Wednesday’s attack to “the spying agencies of some regional and trans-regional countries”.

They will never do it themselves. That's the reason America was forced to bomb Pakistani territory and I am afraid this is the only option a few of Pakistan's neighbors will be left with.

Pakistan never had control of that Pak-Afg border. They didn't care enough. All Pakistan had to do was tell to US to not do it and US would have done it.

stop with the speculations and conspiracy theories, it's very irresponsible.

not speculating at all, only feeling dejected... Pakistan is surrounded by enemies from all sides and some in particular don't want America to leave Afghanistan so that they could continue their proxy war in Pakistan... Just when i though that the status quo was going to be broken , these 2 incidents might force America to rethink and who knows what else is to follow... By the way, all the major think tanks including the ones is US were predicting something of this magnitude might happen considering the General Elections in India and Americas likely pull out from Afghanistan..

Suicide bomber who killed 27 members of Iran's Guards was Pakistani: Guards commander

GENEVA (Reuters) - The man who carried out a suicide bombing which killed 27 members of Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards near the border with Pakistan last week was Pakistani, a senior Revolutionary Guards commander said on Tuesday, according to the Tasnim news agency.

One other member of the militant cell that planned the attack was also a Pakistani citizen, the head of the Guards' ground forces, Brigadier General Mohammad Pakpour said.

Iran has repeatedly blamed Pakistan for sheltering militants connected with attacks in the border area, although Tuesday's remarks appear to be the first time Tehran has said Pakistani citizens were directly involved in the attack.

Iran also accuses regional rival Saudi Arabia of promoting violence among members of Iran's Sunni Muslim minority. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia deny any role in attacks in Iran.

Three Iranians from Sistan and Baluchistan province in southeast Iran were also part of the cell and two of them have been arrested, according to Pakpour. The guards announced three arrests in the case on Monday.

The Sunni group Jaish al Adl (Army of Justice), which says it seeks greater rights and better living conditions for ethnic minority Baluchis in eastern Iran claimed responsibility for the attack.

“Today Saudi Arabia is the heart of evil in the region and the world,” Brigadier General Hossein Salami, the deputy head of the Guards, said on Tuesday at a ceremony commemorating those killed in the attack, according to the Fars news agency.

Remnants of the car used in the suicide attack were given to the police, Pakpour said. Once the owner of the car was identified, intelligence and security forces carried out arrests.

The militants had planned to carry out multiple attacks, Pakpour said: “This group had prepared a lot of ammunition and equipment.”

So A Pakistani did it as per Iranians. Not some local.

42 in Kashmir and 27 killed in Iran both in suicide bombings just before the visit of MBS can't be a coincidence ..
somebody want a war in Pakistan, somebody not happy with Imran Khan

Pakistan keeps digging a hole for themselves here.

Thing is these are your neighboring countries. First it was against India, and now Iran. WE are just brewing trouble for ourselves now.

Next thing you know we will also be teasing the Afghanis, all three countries share borders with us.

somebody want a war in Pakistan, somebody not happy with Imran Khan

or maybe somebody too happy with the PM that he doesn't dulge in those somebodies business, thus they go on doing what they want.

Makes you question whether corruption is the biggest problem or the establishments indulgence into politics?

but we do have problems with Iran.

I think in the past here was that pipeline drama that was later on halted because we didn't want to anger our Saudi and American friends.

one common thing is the mistreatment of minorities in both India (Kashmiris) and Iran (Sunnis) which is the root cause; both India and Iran are saying that the grievances of their minorities are allegedly exploited by groups operating in Pakistan.

This also means that if both India and Iran treat their minorities with respect and give them their due rights then these alleged groups would not be able to act; why not they try this solution?

or maybe somebody too happy with the PM that he doesn't dulge in those somebodies business, thus they go on doing what they want.

Makes you question whether corruption is the biggest problem or the establishments indulgence into politics?

You really think Pakistan wants a war on 3 different fronts?

The Kashmir incident is believable but I doubt Pakistan wants to **** off Iran for no reason.

In fact, the Kashmir incident was done by a local with local resources. Pakistan needs to eliminate JeM for good so that India doesn't have that scapegoat anymore.

The Iran attack happened at a very convenient time as MBS was just about to visit.

My theory is that certain extremist Sunni elements wanted to please his majesty and took it upon themselves to do this. These elements are not supported by the government or ISI (maybe in the past but definitely not currently). They want to destabilize the current government as well for obvious reasons.

but we do have problems with Iran.

I think in the past here was that pipeline drama that was later on halted because we didn't want to anger our Saudi and American friends.

It was halted because Nawaz Sharif didn't want to upset his godfather (Saudis) and because he wasn't getting a cut from that pipeline deal as it had begun under Zardari's government.

It wasn't anything personal against Iran.

The Iran attack happened at a very convenient time as MBS was just about to visit.

how could u be soo sure?

People should stop being jealous of Pakistan - The land of pure. They have nothing to do with any attack. Even if they have something to do, it is for the overall good of the mankind.

On a side note, what is the official Pakistani stance about the oppression of muslims in China?

Official stance is that it is not happening 😂 it is all conspiracy against China although China itself doesn't bother to deny it vehemently 😂

Why am I not surprised. Imran talks peace, but all that talk is useless when Pakistan intelligence uses terrorists as a tool against neighbors.
