Good thing for CSA is that Viacom is paying about $18 million a year for this league and about $35 million for the right to broadcast South African cricket in India.

As long as they get good sponsorships as well, CSA shouldn't be cash strapped. No excuses if they can't produce competent sides now.

Pretoria Capitals put daylight between themselves and the five other Betway SA20 teams after claiming a 52-run victory over second-placed MI Cape Town at Newlands on Monday.

After being sent in to bat, the Capitals flew out the blocks when Will Jacks (62 off 27 balls) and Kusal Mendis (29 off 19 balls) smashed their way to an 88-run partnership after seven overs.

The innings hit a speed bump when Rashid Khan (3/16) and Odean Smith (2/27) grabbed three wickets between them in 17 balls.

Theunis de Bruyn (36 off 26 balls) stabilised the innings before some lusty blows by James Neesham (22* off 18 balls) at the back end of the innings guided the Pretoria-side to 182/8.

MI Cape Town's chase got off to a rocky start when they lost Ryan Rickelton (11 off 11 balls) and Sam Curran (22 off 18 balls) by the eighth over.

Dewald Brevis (46 off 30 balls) and Rassie van der Dussen (24 off 25 balls) got the innings back on track with a 47-run partnership but when the former fell to Anrich Nortje (3/22) the Capitals were well on top.

That dismissal proved pivotal as the MI Cape Town innings snowballed, losing their remaining seven wickets for just 29 runs.

Pretoria Capitals captain Wayne Parnell claimed figures of 3/14 as he proved how lethal he can be at the death.

Phangiso suspended from bowling in Betway SA20

Tuesday, 25 January: Joburg Super Kings’ left-arm spinner, Aaron Phangiso, has been suspended from bowling in the Betway SA20 after the Independent Bowling Action Panel confirmed his bowling action does not conform to the regulations of a legal bowling action as defined by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The panel submitted their final report on 23 January, as constituted under the Betway SA20 Suspect Bowling Action Policy. The report confirmed that Phangiso bowled with a non-compliant bowling action during the match between Joburg Super Kings and Pretoria Capitals on 17 January at the Wanderers in Johannesburg. He is subsequently suspended from bowling in Betway SA20 matches going forward as of 23 January.

The Joburg Super Kings have requested to have Mr Phangiso’s action tested under laboratory conditions at an ICC Accredited Centre. If the ICC testing shows that his action is legal, he will be allowed to continue bowling.

The Independent Bowling Action Panel consists of Mr Zama Ndamane, Mr Vincent Barnes and Mr Vernon Philander.

Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis entered the record books at the Wanderers on Tuesday evening when he struck the maiden century of the Betway SA20.

It was a scintillating innings that lasted only 58 balls, but yielded 113 electrifying runs. It included eight boundaries and eight sixes.

Du Plessis was the star of the Bullring as he tore into Durban’s Super Kings bowling attack.

Du Plessis had Reeza Hendricks as company for the majority of the innings with the opening pair putting on 157 for the first wicket. Hendricks was very much a supporting act though with the Proteas opener compiling 45 off 46 balls.

The partnership was the perfect platform for the Joburg Super Kings to chase down the Super Giants’ 178/6 with Du Plessis striking the winning runs with five balls remaining.

The eight-wicket victory reignited the Super Kings Betway SA20 campaign as they leapfrogged MI Cape Town into fourth place.

Unfortunately for Durban’s Super Giants their chances of qualifying for the playoffs are now slim as they remain at the foot of the table.

Quinton de Kock’s team had given themselves hope through Heinrich Klaasen’s 65 off 48 balls and a pair of 28’s from West Indian duo Kyle Mayers and Jason Holder at the top and bottom end of the innings.

Maheesh Theekshana (3/30) and Gerald Coetzee (3/21) ensured the Super Giants did not run away entirely.

However, the thousands that streamed into the Wanderers once again would remember this special evening as the night Du Plessis struck the first century of the Betway SA20.

The SA20 T20 tournament will have a nine day break so South Africa & England men can play an ODI series.

De Villiers impressed with opening half of Betway SA20

Former Proteas star says SA20 can help youngsters take their game to next level

Friday, 27 January: Proteas legend AB de Villiers believes in the same way the Indian Premier League (IPL) elevated his game to the next level, the Betway SA20 will do so for young South African players.

De Villiers was just 24 years old when he played in the inaugural IPL and was still finding his feet at international level.

But after sharing a dressing-room with the likes of Glenn McGrath, Daniel Vettori, Shoaib Malik and Virender Sehwag at the Delhi Daredevils, De Villiers was transformed from a precocious talent to a global superstar in the years to come.

Now in his first stint as a television commentator for SuperSport at the Betway SA20, De Villiers is seeing first-hand the amount of young local talent South African cricket has to offer.

He believes the experience of playing with world renowned coaches such as Lance Klusener (Durban’s Super Giants), Stephen Fleming (Joburg Super Kings), Simon Katich (MI Cape Town), Graham Ford (Pretoria Capitals), JP Duminy (Paarl Royals) and Adrian Birrell (Sunrisers Eastern Cape) will elevate South Africa’s promising cricketers to the next level.

“It is difficult to explain the value of youngsters spending time with some of the best players and coaches in the world,” De Villiers said following the first half of the League matches.

“I had that experience in 2008 in my very first IPL. I found myself in the same dressing-room as Glenn McGrath, Dan Vettori, Shoaib Malik, Viru Sehwag … the list goes on. The impact that had on my game was immense. You saw my game grow from 2008 onwards and I took it to the next level.

“And it was largely because of that. Spending time with experienced campaigners from different countries.”

After watching the action closely, De Villiers has, of course, kept a close eye on young prodigy, MI Cape Town’s Dewald Brevis, but has also identified young Sunrisers Eastern Cape opener Jordan Hermann as a player to watch.

Hermann, 21, was a late addition to the Sunrisers’ squad after being called up as a wildcard.

De Villiers also offered to assist Hermann in his development in order for the youngster to fulfil his immense potential.

“At the top of my head among the batters is Jordan Hermann. I didn’t even know about him before the tournament to be honest. I heard his name once, and then I watched him bat, and I was really impressed,” the former Proteas captain said.

“I would love to work with these batters. I really have a lot of passion in regards to that. You have to evolve as a player. If you stagnate you will end up not enjoying the game. I think there needs to be constant check-ups. I think that's what kept me fresh. I always wanted to raise the bar every single season until the very end.”

Tuesday, 31 January: Bjorn Fortuin may have transformed Boland Park into his personal playground during the first half of the Betway SA20, but the Paarl Royals left-arm spinner is ready for the challenge of returning to the Highveld.

Fortuin has claimed 13 wickets - with only one wicket not taken in Paarl - thus far to place him joint second on the overall Betway SA20 wicket-takers table.

He has been particularly lethal upfront in the Powerplay where he has regularly struck in his first over of the match for the Royals.

“I really wish I could (roll up the Boland Park surface). I try to keep my gameplans simple there,” Fortuin said.

“I work very closely with our analyst and spin consultant Richard das Neves. They have been very helpful with what works on that wicket and what doesn’t. I just try to stick to that plan as much as I can. Some days batters will get the best of you and get you off that plan. But for the most part I think I’ve stuck to my plan.”

The Paarl Royals have, however, completed their home leg of the competition and now travel north for their two remaining matches against Joburg Super Kings (Wanderers) and Pretoria Capitals (Centurion).

The general consensus is that Highveld surfaces are much more tailored for batting with the tournament’s joint-highest score of 216 compiled by the Capitals at Centurion, while Joburg Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis’ maiden Betway SA20 hundred was struck at the Wanderers.

Fortuin is not intimidated at the prospect of bowling on these batting paradises, especially as he has played all his domestic cricket for Lions at the Wanderers for the last decade.

“From our team perspective, I definitely feel like our batting line-up is more suited to the conditions up on the Highveld. The ball does fly and the wickets play a lot better up here. The bounce is a lot more true, there is more pace, so they’ll favour that,” he said.

“In terms of my bowling, I don’t think I will change too much. Maybe a tweak here or there.

“But even myself and (Tabraiz) Shamsi, people don’t seem to realise that both of us learnt our trade up here on the Highveld. I am well-versed in bowling here.

"Like I said it does have a few different challenges like Boland Park would have … the ball does fly … the wickets play a bit better … but I feel like I’ve built up enough experience to deal with those challenges up here.”

The second half of the Betway SA20 will get underway on Thursday, 2 February when Durban’s Super Giants host MI Cape Town at Kingsmead.

The Betway SA20’s gravitas as a major global T20 competition was further enhanced this week with three Australian internationals joining the tournament for the first time.

ICC T20 World Cup winner Matthew Wade, hard-hitting all-rounder Tim David and batter Ben McDermott have all arrived in South Africa to join their respective teams.

Wade, who also won the Indian Premier League (IPL) with the Gujarat Titans last year, will significantly strengthen the Joburg Super Kings’ top-order batting. He replaces West Indian paceman Alzarri Joseph, who has left the Wanderers-based team to join the Windies’ Test squad for the two-match Test tour of Zimbabwe.

David, meanwhile, has joined the MI Cape Town squad with English fast bowler Henry Brookes. The duo have replaced the injured Liam Livingstone and fast bowler Olly Stone.

The 1.96m tall David, who was born in Singapore, has a reputation for striking massive sixes in the IPL, Australia’s Big Bash, Caribbean Premier League and England’s The Hundred competition, and will add great excitement to the second half of the Betway SA20.

“We have seen quality cricket lighting up the first half of the Betway SA20,” League Commissioner, Graeme Smith said. It’s great to have more world-class players adding value to the competition. We are going into the thrilling business end with very little separating the teams on the log, we are in for an exciting finish.”

Durban’s Super Giants have also strengthened their squad with the addition of McDermott, alongside England’s ICC T20 World Cup winner David Willey, for their remaining matches.

McDermott, who is the son of former Australian fast bowler Craig, has played five ODI’s and 23 T20I’s for the Baggy Greens. He is a hard-hitting top-order batter and replaces West Indian Kyle Mayers, while Willey comes in for Jason Holder.

The table-topping Pretoria Capitals have also brought in former South African international Colin Ingram to replace Harry Brook. The latter was called up to the England Test squad currently on duty in New Zealand.

Ingram is a worthy replacement having played 31 ODIs and nine T20I’s for the Proteas. Furthermore, he is vastly experienced in the T20 format having played 319 matches in various leagues all around the world.

The second half the League gets underway on Thursday with Durban’s Super Giants hosting MI Cape Town at Kingsmead.

Joburg Super Kings’ left-arm spinner, Aaron Phangiso, underwent an ICC Accredited Bowling Action Test at the University of Pretoria on 27 January. The Test was overseen by ICC accredited practitioner, Dr Helen Bayne. The test confirmed that Phangiso had bowled with a non-compliant action as identified by the Betway SA20 Independent Bowling Action Panel. Phangiso’s suspension from bowling in the Betway SA20 remains in force.

Phangiso will work through a rehabilitation process on his bowling action and the Independent Panel will determine the process regarding re-testing of the action once the rehabilitation work is complete.

All the various stakeholders in Phangiso’s career - Northerns Cricket Union, Cricket South Africa, the South African Cricketers’ Association, Joburg Super Kings and Betway SA20 - are aligned in their commitment to support the player in whatever manner is required, acknowledging that such a process is incredibly difficult for a player.

Joburg Super Kings have requested permission to replace Phangiso for the remainder of the Betway SA20 2023 with Kyle Simmonds, which will take place with immediate effect.

All parties involved will make no further comment on the matter.

This league has actually been ok to watch. I did have my reservations at the start because I thought it would have been low quality.

I haven't watched religiously nor do I really even know who is playing but they show the matches on sky and its decent cricket, beautiful grounds and a very engaged crowd.

A torrential Highveld storm brought a disruptive end to the clash between the Joburg Super Kings and Paarl Royals at the Wanderers, while continued downpours at Kingsmead led to the abandonment of Durban’s Super Giants clash with Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Fifteen overs were delivered at the Wanderers with the Royals well-placed at 131/4.

English opening pair Jason Roy and Jos Buttler had set the platform with a rapid 53-run stand in just 3.3 overs.

Buttler departed for 23 off 11 balls, but Roy continued his new-found form with 61 off 42 balls.

Donavon Ferreira changed the game though with two tight overs that conceded just five runs and the wicket of Wihan Lubbe. There were also wickets for Romario Shepherd (1/30), Gerald Coetzee (1/24) and Nandre Burger (1/26).

However, the big-hitting David Miller and Evan Jones were still at the crease for the Royals poised for a late onslaught, but the weather ended any chance of the game progressing any further.

Meanwhile, at Kingsmead in Durban, there was only time for 5.2 overs to be delivered. They were highly eventful with Adam Rossington clubbing 35 not out off just 18 balls.

There was, however, also an opportunity for England left-arm seamer Reece Topley to take two wickets with successive balls, including that of Proteas white-ball captain Temba Bavuma for a first-ball duck on his BetwaySA20 debut for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Despite the hard work by the Kingsmead ground staff, which included Super Giants assistant coach and Proteas legend Jonty Rhodes, to get the covers off in time, there was unfortunately no further play.

All four teams were awarded two points each with the Sunrisers Eastern Cape (2nd) and Paarl Royals (3rd) remaining deadlocked on 19 points.

Joburg Super Kings is one point adrift with 18 points in fourth position, while DSG have moved off the bottom of the table into fifth place on 14 points.

It’s more than money that makes a team good. SA, as ever, need a strong pool of high level black players to perform, to make SA great again.

I hope to see Pakistani players in this competition next year. I’d rather they play this competition than the BPL or the BBL.

I believe the only time CSA makes profits on a Test tour is when India or England tour. So it was imperative that they get a good broadcast deal for their league.

Once you have that kind of money, you can invest in pathways for talented black players etc.

The Pretoria Capitals became the first team to secure their place in the Betway SA20 semi-finals with a thrilling one-wicket victory over MI Cape Town at Centurion on Saturday evening.

The Capitals required a hobbling captain Wayne Parnell and last-man Josh Little to scamper through off Sam Curran’s final delivery to take the hosts past MI Cape Town’s 159 all out.

Parnell had earlier left the field after 2.1 overs with a groin injury, but the skipper courageously came out at No 10 to take his team over the line.

MI Cape Town bowling unit had tried to keep their team in contention throughout with Parnell’s counterpart Rashid Khan delivering a fine spell of spin bowling. Rashid conceded just 17 runs in his four overs and picked up the wicket of Theunis de Bruyn.

England international Curran also delivered a wholehearted performance to finish with 3/26 and kept MI Cape Town in the contest until the very last ball.

Pretoria Capital’s run-chase began sublime fashion with Kusal Mendis (39 off 25 balls) enjoying the conditions, but furthermore only Player of the Match Rilee Rossouw (40 off 19 balls) and Senuran Muthusamy (25 off 23 balls) made worthwhile contributions.

Rassie van der Dussen had earlier laid the platform for MI Cape Town with 51 off 29 balls, but the Proteas batter did not get the support from any of his teammates. This was due to Pretoria Capitals captain Parnell’s impressive opening two overs, while Anrich Nortje steamed in from the Pavilion End with one his deliveries being timed at 150km/h. His battle with MI Cape Town teenager star Dewald Brevis was one of the highlights of the match. Nortje emerged victorious in that contest with Brevis feathering a catch behind.

He cranked up the speed gun even with a 152km/h delivery that rearranged Tim David’s stumps as Nortje finished with 2/37. Eathan Bosh finished with identical figures, while James Neesham also claimed 2/26.

MI Cape Town are now rooted to the basement of the table with 13 points and require a mathematical miracle to qualify for the semi-finals with just one match remaining against Joburg Super Kings at the Wanderers on Monday.

Faf du Plessis took centre stage again at the Wanderers to power the Joburg Super Kings into the Betway SA20 semi-finals.

Du Plessis delivered a consecutive masterful T20 innings to follow up the tournament’s maiden century in his last outing. The former Proteas skipper struck 92 from 61 balls (7x4, 4x6) that formed the bedrock of the Super Kings 160/6.

Reeza Hendricks (40 off 36 balls) also played his supporting role to perfection again with the opening partnership yielding 119 in 14.2 overs.

The Sunrisers fought back at the backend as they picked up five wickets while restricting the Super Kings to a further 41 runs.

It proved sufficient though on the day as the Joburg Super Kings bowling unit delivered a fine overall performance. Maheesh Theekshana set it in motion with the early dismissal of Adam Rossington before the pace of Gerald Coetzee accounted for Jordan Hermann and JJ Smuts.

The Sunrisers required a rebuilding job and it was provided by new recruit Temba Bavuma. The Proteas limited-overs skipper timed the ball sweetly in his 50 off just 34 balls, but besides Aiden Markram’s 34 he did not have any worthwhile support.

This was due to a brilliant spell of left-arm spin bowling from Super Kings debutant Kyle Simmons, who tore the heart out of the Sunrisers’ middle-order with figures of 3/23 from his four overs.

The Sunrisers have now completed their league fixtures on 19 points. They will await the result of Durban’s Super Giants final match against league-leaders Pretoria Capitals later on Sunday afternoon at Centurion to determine their semi-final fate.

Heinrich Klaasen produced an innings for the ages to keep Durban’s Super Giants hopes of progressing to the Betway SA20 semi-finals alive. The visitors claimed a bonus-point 104-run victory over the Pretoria Capitals.

Klaasen royally entertained the Centurion crowd with a sparkling 104 not out off just 44 balls. The Proteas middle-order batter peppered the grass banks with 10 boundaries and half–a-dozen sixes.

Klaasen’s pyrotechnics saw the Super Giants post a mammoth 254/4 – the highest score of the maiden Betway20 tournament – surpassing the Capitals and Super Giants’ previous 216.

Durban’s Super Giants arrived at Centurion with major intent as they shuffled their batting line-up around. Captain Quinton de Kock and Australian international Ben McDermott provided the early impetus with a rolling opening partnership that yielded 76 runs in just 6.1 overs.

De Kock was the first to depart for 43 off 20 balls. McDermott maintained the momentum with Klaasen, who was promoted to No 3 as the pair added a further 40 off just 20 balls.

It was from hereon that Klaasen went into overdrive mode though. David Willey did not last long, but Klaasen and Wiaan Mulder added a further 54 off only 24 balls.

However, the real entertainment was only just beginning with Matthew Breetzke joining Klaasen at the crease for the final six overs.

With the Capitals not having captain Wayne Parnell’s services available on Sunday due to the skipper having suffered a groin strain the previous night against MI Cape Town, Klaasen and Breetzke took full advantage.

The pair added 84 off the final 36 deliveries with Breetzke (46 not out off 21 balls) also showing off his class with a couple of thunderous sixes on bended knee that sailed over the covers.

Unfortunately for the Centurion crowd that once again came out in their masses to support the Betway SA20 table-toppers, the Capitals batting unit failed to get out the blocks in the run chase as they folded for just 103.

Junior Dala was the pick of Durban’s Super Giants’ bowler with figures of 3/33, while Dwaine Pretorius (2/20) and Mulder (2/17) claimed two wickets apiece.

DSG moved to 19 points on the log, but were unable to surpass Sunrisers Eastern Cape on net-run-rate with Aiden Markram’s team now also joining the Pretoria Capitals and Joburg Super Kings in the semi-finals.

Lance Klusener’s Super Giants will await the result of the Pretoria Capitals and Paarl Royals, who also have 19 points, on Tuesday at Centurion for their fate to be decided.

The Joburg Super Kings maintained their momentum in the build-up to the Betway SA20 semi-finals with a convincing bonus point 76-run victory over MI Cape Town at the Wanderers on Monday evening,

MI Cape Town’s season, however, ended on a disappointing note. The Newlands-based team were already eliminated from the competition prior to the clash against the Super Kings, but slipped to yet another defeat to finish in last position.

Simon Katich’s team will rue a couple of last-over finishes that could have changed the complexion of the season, but ultimately they will have to ponder about how they are going to improve next season.

The Joburg Super Kings, meanwhile, can look forward to their upcoming semi-final with confidence.

The victory was set up Leus de Plooy’s 81 not out that powered the home team to 189/6. Du Plooy received solid support from Australian T20 World Cup winner Matthew Wade, who carved out 40 off just 18 balls.

MI Cape Town had started well with the ball by picking up three wickets in the Powerplay through George Linde (1/16) and Sam Curran (2/26).

In fact, Linde dismissed the tournament’s leading scorer and Super Kings captain Faf du Plessis with the first delivery of the innings, courtesy of a brilliant diving catch by MICT captain Rashid Khan.

MI Cape Town’s reply, however, stuttered from the start with none of their batters being able to capitalise on a good start. Rassie van der Dussen made 20, while Grant Roelofsen managed 21.

Young Dewald Brevis fought a lone hand at the backend of the innings, but ultimately the Super Kings bowling and fielding were too good for MI Cape Town on the night.

Left-arm spinner Kyle Simmons (3/23) impressed again with another three-wicket haul, while Gerald Coetzee’s wicket-tally continues to bulge with figures of 3/27.

Maheesh Theekshana was equally impressive with 2/16 as MI Cape Town folded for 113 all out.

The Super Kings entrenched their second position on the Betway SA20 table with 27 points - equal to that of the table-topping Pretoria Capitals who have a superior net run-rate.

The Paarl Royals may have lost by 59 runs to the Pretoria Capitals in the last round-robin match of the Betway SA20, but they did just enough to sneak into the semi-finals.

The Royals were playing a game within a game after the Capitals posted a mammoth 226/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Sri Lankan international Kusal Mendis was the mainstay of the Capitals innings with 80 off 41 balls. Colin Ingram (41) and Phil Salt (39) also made worthwhile contributions.

The Paarl-based side’s secondary target was 163 in order to edge out Durban’s Super Giants for the last remaining semi-final spot.

The Super Giants’ hopes were rising when the Royals were reduced to 38/3 in the Powerplay and then a further 101/5 in the 14th over when captain David Miller walked back to the pavilion with seemingly his team’s hopes of progressing with him.

However, the Royals still had Jos Buttler at the crease and England’s limited-overs captain delivered a superb 70 off 45 balls (4x4, 5x6) to take his team to the brink of qualification.

Ten runs were still required off eight balls when Buttler departed though and it was left to Bjorn Fortuin to get the Royals into the semi-finals with a vitally important eight runs off eight deliveries.

The table-topping Capitals, meanwhile, will be glad that they returned to winning ways after their hiccup against the Super Giants with a rematch awaiting them against the Royals in the first semi-final at the Wanderers on Wednesday.

The second Betway SA20 semi-final will see Joburg Super Kings face off against third-placed Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Centurion on Thursday.

Wednesday, 8 February: The four teams to compete for the opportunity to lift the inaugural Betway SA20 trophy have been confirmed. Pretoria Capitals will take on Paarl Royals in the first semi-final at the Wanderers on 8 February with Joburg Super Kings facing Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the second semi-final at Centurion on 9 February.

The league matches have delivered action-packed and nail-biting cricket in front of capacity crowds across the six venues in the country, bringing it down to only three matches until the 2023 Champions are crowned.

There are reserve days in place for the semi-finals and Final in the event that play is interrupted by weather or other causes. Spectators with tickets to the semi-finals and Final must retain their tickets in order to have access to the reserve days.

The Pretoria Capitals became the first team in history to advance to the inaugural Betway SA20 Final with Rilee Rossouw and Eathan Bosch playing starring roles in a tense 29-run victory in the first semi-final against the Paarl Royals at the Wanderers.

Rossouw held the Capitals’ innings together with 56 off 41 balls as the table-toppers posted a competitive 153/8 after being inserted by the Royals.

It was a surface that was not conducive to fluent strokeplay and Rossouw had to restrain his natural attacking game after the Royals spinners Bjorn Fortuin (1/24) and Tabraiz Shamsi (2/19) had started well.

Royals all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo (3/29) maintained the pressure during the middle period, but Rossouw kept the scoreboard ticking over with a few timely boundaries.

At the interval the match was evenly-poised before opening bowler Bosch provided the Capitals with the perfect start.

Bosch (2/22) struck with the second delivery of the Royals innings when he removed England opener Jason Roy. But then Bosch delivered arguably the moment of the match when he clean bowled the in-form Jos Buttler (13) in his next over.

The Royals were 13/2 and faced an uphill battle from hereon. The challenge became even steeper when Rossouw utilised his golden arm to have Eoin Morgan (17) caught on the cover boundary.

The Boland Park-based side had one last hope though in the form of their skipper David Miller. While Miller was at the crease anything remained possible, especially when the equation was reduced to 30 runs off the final 12 balls with two wickets remaining.

However, the return of Anrich Nortje to the attack in the penultimate over saw to the demise of Miller (31) who was caught on the square-leg boundary before the tournament’s leading wicket-taker closed out the match when Colin Ingram claimed a brilliant catch off Shamsi to set off the Capitals’ celebrations.

The Capitals now wait for the winner of the second semi-final between Joburg Super Kings and Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Centurion on Thursday to see who they will face in Saturday’s showpiece at the Wanderers.

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape will meet the Pretoria Capitals in the inaugural Betway SA20 final, courtesy of a marvellous century by their captain Aiden Markram.

The Sunrisers skipper embraced the occasion and struck a scintillating 100 off just 58 balls in the second Betway SA20 semi-final at Centurion that powered the Eastern Cape side to 213/5.

Markram displayed fantastic temperament as the Sunrisers were reduced to 13/2 after losing both openers Temba Bavuma and Adam Rossington early on to Lizaad Williams (4/41).

But that was when the experienced Markram made the ultimate difference as he formed a match-turning 99-run partnership with Jordan Hermann.

The Betway SA20 has unveiled plenty of young South African talent and young Hermann certainly showed that he is one to look out for in the future with a composed 48 (36 balls) that helped resurrect the Sunrisers’ innings.

With Tristan Stubbs (20) and Jordan Cox (18) adding a couple of cameos along with Makram’s powerful strikes, it allowed the Sunrisers to post an imposing 213/5.

The Joburg Super Kings’ chase got off to the worst possible start when their in-form captain Faf du Plessis pulled Sisanda Magala’s first delivery of the innings straight to deep square-leg.

The Super Kings’ woes were compounded when Leus du Plooy followed shortly for another duck as the Sunrisers exerted their dominance.

But the Wanderers-based side were not ready to give up without a fight. Reeza Hendricks kept the Super Kings in the contest until the final over with a superb 96.

Ultimately, though, it was Sunrisers’ night as the Super Kings fell short by 14 runs as they finished on 199/5.

Pretoria Capitals captain Wayne Parnell wants his team to “go have fun and entertain” in the inaugural Betway SA20 Final against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at the Wanderers on Saturday.

Parnell’s message to his Capitals team encapsulates everything the Betway SA20 has been in its maiden season with the South African cricket-loving public flocking back to all six stadiums around the country en masse.

The Wanderers in Johannesburg - iconic venue of the 2003 ICC Cricket World Cup, 2007 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the 2009 Indian Premier League finals - will once again be filled to capacity on Saturday when hosting these two fantastic teams.

Parnell’s presence in the Capitals starting XI may still be in doubt due his lingering Grade 1 groin injury, but the skipper has full confidence in the rest of his squad to get the job done.

“For us it's about having fun, entertaining people, being brave, because ultimately finals can either go one way, where it brings out the best in people, but it can also paralyse people as well. I think we want to be the side that puts our best foot forward,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sunrisers Eastern Cape skipper Aiden Markram, who struck a majestic 100 in the semi-final to help his team progress to the showpiece, fully believes the strength of character of his squad will get them over the line, particularly with former Protea and current Netherlands international Roelof van der Merwe as their talisman.

“He (van der Merwe) is a great guy to be around, we all know him for the strong character that he is, and it's infectious that sort of energy that he gives off. After losing our first two games, we felt that we probably were going to need some strong characters to turn things around and you don’t get stronger characters around than Roelof van der Merwe,” Markram said.

“If you look on paper, there wouldn’t have been many people who would have given us much of a chance heading into the competition. Credit must go to the guys in the squad, who will do almost anything to win, and we’ve been lucky to have those types of characters in our squad.”

The Betway SA20 Final is set to add its name to the list of premier entertainment events on the South Africa social calendar with the high-quality cricket set to be fused with some of the best entertainers in the country.

Grammy award winner Zakes Bantwini and Nana Atta will deliver the closing performance along with plenty of in-stadium activations that will include the stilt walkers, balloon artists, pace painters, a 360-degree camera station, brass bands and plenty more.

A reserve day has been scheduled for Sunday if the weather does force the Final to be washed out on Saturday.

The Betway SA20 Final between Pretoria Capitals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape planned for Saturday, 11 February at the Wanderers has been postponed due to a waterlogged field and inclement weather. The match will start at 13h30 on Sunday, 12 February, the scheduled reserve day.

The ground preparation for the match has been compromised, with the pitch remaining under covers for three days and over 200ml of rain falling since Wednesday this week. The SA Weather Service has predicted more showers for the remainder of Saturday, with a clearer outlook predicted for Sunday.

Betway SA20 League Commissioner, Graeme Smith said: “We’ve engaged the match officials, teams, groundsman, stakeholders and the SA Weather Service, and postponing the match is the best decision to allow for the possibility of a full match in drier conditions. We want to give the teams and spectators a memorable Final.”

Gates will open at 10h30. All tickets remain valid for the reserve day and public who have booked Park and Ride can use the same tickets for this service.

The Sunrisers Eastern Cape have been crowned the inaugural Betway SA20 champions.

The Gqeberha-based team cruised to a comfortable four-wicket victory over the Pretoria Capitals at a sold out Wanderers on Sunday.

The final was moved to the reserve day after a waterlogged field and inclement weather forced it to be postponed. But that did nothing to dim the excitement with the Bullring creating a fabulous atmosphere. And the Sunrisers Eastern Cape did not disappoint by delivering a brilliant bowling performance to by bowling the Capitals out for just 135.

It was led by the ever-green Roelof van Merwe. The 38-year-old delivered an excellent spell with the left-arm spinner picking up 4/31. Van der Merwe was ably supported by Sisanda Magala (2/30) and Ottniel Baartman (2/22).

The Sunrisers’ reply did not get off to the best of starts with Temba Bavuma departing in the second over to Eathan Bosch.

Aiden Markram’s team, however, were soon back on track with Adam Rossington counter-attacking through a 30-ball 57. Rossington tore into the Capitals’ attack and ensured the chase was never going to be tricky.

Anrich Nortje bowled his heart out for the Capitals in a bid to haul his team back into the game, but ultimately his 2/21 was not going to be enough.

Marco Jansen delivered the killer blow for the Sunrisers with his six over long-off, setting off the celebrations all the way from Johannesburg to Gqeberha.

In a new introduction, teams will be required to sign a rookie player; a South African player 22 years of age or younger who has not featured in the SA20 before.

Squad sizes will increase to 19 with the inclusion of the rookie player and the wild card player. Teams are required to have a minimum of 11 South African players in their squads. For the match day playing XI, teams can field a maximum of 4 overseas players and a minimum of 7 South Africans.

“We have put these new regulations in place to build on the successful first season of Betway SA20, which was underpinned by entertaining and quality cricket from some of the best players in the world. The teams have an opportunity to assemble the best of South African and international talent, which will no doubt produce competitive and a high standard of cricket for the fans in the second season.

“The addition of a rookie player to the squads shows our continued commitment and investment to giving young talent exposure on a global platform. We saw some special performances from the young players in our first season. SA20 remains aspirational for up and coming cricketers and this is another opportunity for them to showcase their skills.”

Sunrisers Eastern Cape were crowned the inaugural champions at a sold out Wanderers Stadium to close off a successful first season, which saw record crowds and a renewed interest in domestic cricket in South Africa.
