Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Suresh Raina headed back to India on Saturday, August 28, due to personal reasons. As he is set to miss the entire IPL 2020 edition, in the UAE, many have been speculating the reason for his sudden departure back to India.

As reported by jagran.com, Raina's relative is in critical condition while his uncle has died after a midnight attack in their Pathankot's Thariyal village. Reportedly, the attack occurred on the night of August 19 when the family was sleeping on the terrace of their residence. Just then, the unidentified assailants attacked them with lethal weapons.

It is believed that Asha Devi, sister of Raina's father, is in critical condition and fighting hard for survival. On the other hand, his uncle, identified as 58-year-old Ashok Kumar, succumbed to death. The former Indian cricketer's cousins - 32-year-old Kaushal Kumar and 24-year-old Apin Kumar have also attained injuries during the violent attack.

Earlier, CSK CEO KS Viswanathan was quoted as saying in the tweet posted by the franchise, "Suresh Raina has returned to India for personal reasons and will be unavailable for the remainder of the IPL season. Chennai Super Kings offers complete support to Suresh and his family during this time."

While the cricketer himself is yet to give an official statement in this regard, his absence is another huge blow to the MS Dhoni-led Yellow Army, who already have plenty of members to have tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Thus, it has another big concern to find Raina's replacement. Considering the COVID-19 pandemic is still ruling the roost worldwide, it won't be a cakewalk for the franchise bosses to find a suitable replacement in time.

The three-time champions were to kick-off the IPL with the season opener against Mumbai Indians as per the original schedule. However, the Indian board might now have to rework the opening week of the upcoming tournament due to the alarming situation in the CSK dugout.

A 58-year-old man said to be a relative of cricketer Suresh Raina died while four members of his family sustained injuries allegedly in an attack by robbers, police said on Saturday. The deceased has been identified as Ashok Kumar, a government contractor.

The incident took place at Thariyal village in Punjab’s Pathankot district on the night intervening August 19 and 20, police said. According to them, three to four members of the notorious Kale Kachhewala gang had come with an intention to loot, attacked Ashok Kumar and his family members at their house in Thariyal village near Madhopur of Pathankot.

At the time of the attack, they were sleeping at the terrace of their house. Ashok Kumar, who had suffered head injuries, died while four others sustained injuries, said police.

Kumar’s death was also confirmed by Pathankot Senior Superintendent of Police Gulneet Singh Khurana. As far as Kumar’s relation with cricketer Raina, the SSP said he has no confirmation about it. He may be a relative, he said.

“We are investigating the matter”, said the SSP.

According to police, robbers decamped with some cash and gold from the house. Kumar’s 80-year-old mother Satya Devi, his wife Asha Devi, sons Apin and Kaushal suffered injuries, said police. While Satya Devi has been discharged from hospital, others are still undergoing treatment, said Pathankot Superintendent of Police Prabhjot Singh Virk.

India cricketer Suresh Raina on Tuesday shared a series of tweets in which he opened up on the ordeal his family in Punjab has gone through in the past few days. Raina, who recently pulled out of IPL 2020 and returned home from UAE citing ‘personal reasons’, said that what happened to his family was beyond horrible.

“What happened to my family is Punjab was beyond horrible. My uncle was slaughtered to death, my bua & both my cousins had severe injuries,” Raina tweeted.

“Unfortunately my cousin also passed away last night after battling for life for days. My bua is still very very critical & is on life support,” he added.

Raina also went on to seek help from Punjab police in catching the culprits and also tagged Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh in his next tweet. “Till date we don’t know what exactly had happened that night & who did this. I request @PunjabPoliceInd to look into this matter. We at least deserve to know who did this heinous act to them,” Raina wrote.

“Those criminals should not be spared to commit more crimes. @capt_amarinder @CMOPb,” he further added.

Raina will not be part of the upcoming edition of IPL 2020 which kicks off from September 19th. The left-hander had also announced his retirement from international cricket last month.

What on earth happened here?

And N Srinivasan mocked him - "he knows what he'll be missing in terms of money". Disgrace.

This is the reason i hate Srini.

Raina returned because of bereavement in his family.

Maybe Srini made this comment before he knew the exact reason of why Rania left?

There were reports that Raina wasn’t happy with hos hotel room and since some CSK players tested positive he wanted to go back. Not defending Srini at all, but surely even he can’t be that inhumane making those comments knowing Raina’s family situation?

Not sure but I think Srini said that due to reports that Raina left due to not getting a good room

Fair. Srini too has come out with a clarification on this yesterday.

“These boys, they’re family. They’ve been family for over a decade now. When I said ‘cricketers are like prima donnas’, it wasn’t in a negative sense. A prima donna is the lead singer in an opera. Similarly, cricketers are always at the forefront of an exercise like this,”

Srini’s words. Never knew primadonnas could be used in positive sense :))

Srini seems to have short temper

3 Arrested For Murder Of Suresh Raina's Relatives, Case Solved: Punjab

The 33-year-old cricketer lost his uncle and a cousin after the family was attacked at their Pathankot home reportedly by robbers on August 20All India Reported by Mohammad Ghazali, Edited by Chandrashekar Srinivasan

Chandigarh:

Three members of the gang that murdered members of cricketer Suresh Raina's family in Punjab's Pathankot last month, during a reported robbery, have been arrested, Chief Minister Amarinder Singh said Wednesday, as he declared the case "solved".

Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta said the accused were part of an inter-state gang of robber-criminals and that 11 other members of that gang, one of whom has already been identified were on the run. Efforts are being made to capture them as well, the senior cop added.

According to Mr Gupta the SIT (Special Investigation Team) probing the case received a tip earlier this week that the three arrested suspects were holed up in slum dwellings near the Pathankot Railway Station. The police raid that followed recovered two wooden sticks (presumably used as weapons), two gold rings and cash worth ₹ 1,530.

The accused told the police they were part of a gang that had committed similar crimes across parts of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and even Jammu and Kashmir. They said they jumped from one location to another by following landmarks such as canals and railway lines.

On the night of the attack on Suresh Raina's family the gang met up near the house of Ashok Kumar (Mr Raina's uncle) after travelling in groups of two or three to avoid suspicion. Their first two attempted robberies on the night failed - Mr Kumar's house was the third.

Five of the accused entered the house (they used a ladder to climb the wall) and saw three members of Mr Raina's family sleeping on mats on the floor.

The suspects hit them on the head before moving through the house, attacking others and escaping with cash and gold ornaments, DGP Dinkar Gupta said.

They escaped, separated once again into groups of two or three and reached the railway station, where they divided the spoils and dispersed, Mr Gupta said.

Mr Raina, 33, lost his uncle (Mr Kumar) and his cousin Kaushal Kumar in the attack. His aunt (Mr Kumar's wife, Asha Rani) remains in critical condition.

Two others injured in the attack have been discharged from the hospital.

"What happened to my family is Punjab was beyond horrible. My uncle was slaughtered to death, my bua & both my cousins had severe injuries. Unfortunately, my cousin also passed away last night after battling for life for days," the cricketer, who had pulled out of the forthcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season due to "personal reasons", tweeted.

Mr Raina had appealed to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh for help, and Mr Singh had responded: "Beta (my son)... we will make sure that the guilty are brought to justice".
