Busted flushes calling their retirements years after they were dropped doesn't mean anything, let's be honest.

Bad timing.

Should had retired after a month.

His retirement will be overshadowed by dhonis

On the contrary, he gets to share the limelight with Dhoni, which would far exceed any limelight he would produce on his own if he retired in isolation. Think Mohammad Kaif.

One of India's greatest T20 player and a fantastic LOI cricketer. A great fielder as well. Very underrated.

When was Dhoni dropped

And dropped players can always be called back.

Suresh raina will now join some Indian right wing party. Probably bjp.

He became lazy, was even failed in fitness test in some years back... Could've achieved more..

I'm referring to Raina. Obviously he was dropped at some point, when he was not announced in a squad.

Dhoni was dropped after the 2019 WC.

If dropped players do return, it's to the team's detriment. Like Yuvraj.

A top class LO player who's decline is very confusing. Was probably best served as a top order player. But never got the chance due to India having better players.

He did well given his limitations and won India a lot of games as a finisher. India has a good pool of talent coming through and he knew he was not in the reckoning anymore.

Suresh Raina's exploits at International level is a classic example of how you can make a name for yourself with a strong board, with a team that wins more than it loses, with a country that has a strong domestic system.

Guy was a front-foot hack with the bat, dibley dobley bowler but a great fielder. But when you are associated with a strong captain/coach then you punch above your weight.

Not always. In hindsight Raina would have been far more useful than the trash Jadhav,Karthik served in 2019 WC

Front foot hack averaged a decent 35 and played most crucial knock vs Pak in 2011 WC semi

No one saying hes great but was good

Clutch player! His retirement makes me feel old. Lol.

Is Kohli the only Indian player left from the 2011 squad?

When was the last time he played for india?

Why do we have to wait till a player in on the wrong side of 35 and hasnt played intnl cricket for a yr or two before they retire?

He is a Kashmiri isn't it? Good to see you back though. Hope you post more in Time Pass section. :inti

Yes, of Koshur Pandit descent. But i have no idea if he or his parents ever lived in Kashmir. Will have to check that out.
And thanks a lot. Yes i will post more from now on.

The fashion of this announcement was legitimately so cringeworthy I got a severe dose of second hand embarrassment. It came off entirely as if he was hopping on the MSD bandwagon, legit cringey as hell.

Imagine Messi retiring and then seeing like Di Maria saying he's following him on his journey or something :))

Decent player all the same.

True.

However knowing true Indian cricket fans, I think they know who is the man for the day.

Happy retirement.

Wasnt a great player and will quickly be forgotten.

Most definitely did not fulfil talent.

Essentially he was an Umar Akmal managed by a more professional cricket board and team set up

Raina might have his faults but he surely had far better attitude than UA.

Most definitely did not fulfil talent.

He didn't had the technique to succeed for longer format. So, there was never any point for fulfilling talent.

However, Raina's strength was his hitting ability and his ability to perform under pressure. He delivered a couple of quality knocks in World Cup 2011 knockouts.

He was completely different from Umar Akmal who had the talent but didn't fulfill it.

Thanks for your service Raina. The two 30s he played in 2011 WC QF and SF were invaluable and highly underrated knocks.

Could well have become the LOI captain after Dhoni but for some strange reason, he preferred to main a sidekick of Dhoni at CSK. That image hurt his growth big time especially after Dhoni declined as a player from around 2014-15. Lost his zing even in IPL in the last 3-4 years, became overweight and had started to fade away. A career full of unfulfilled potential.

I do hope he continues to play domestic cricket. UP Ranji Team is a young team and could well become a champion side with his experience and guidance.

Selfless team player. One who was always energetic on the field and gave his best.
He also had a very positive attitude and celebrated sucess of his fellow team-mates with the same zeal as his own.
That quick fire 30-40 runs at the end were always valuable. The innings he played during 2011 WC against Pakistan shifted the momentum towards India.

He wasn't a player that shook the world but for India he was a clutch lower middle order batsman who won us a lot of important games.

With the ball he was handy and often a partnership breaker.

On field, he was one of our finest fielders ever.

He will be remembered most for the 2011 world cup where he played crucial knocks vs Pakistan, Australia in QF, SF respectively.

Thanks for the services Suresh Raina.

You will be missed

Forget Dhoni and Yuvi we haven't even found a replacement of Suresh Raina yet. :inti

So true :))

Our middle order has literally been non existent since 2011 world cup.

The top 3 Dhawan, Sharma, Kohli have been really really good to hide the deficiency for so long and effectively except in big matches

Forget Dhoni and Yuvi we haven't even found a replacement of Suresh Raina yet. :inti

Shreyas Iyer, if backed properly, will surpass both Yuvi and Raina as a middle order bat in LOIs.

Also, the top 3 will have to give opportunities to younger players to bat at 3-4 for them to become better.

Finally with Dhoni gone now, hopefully Pant or Samson wil get a proper run. Dhoni's absence was never felt in Tests. In LOIs, only because Kohli was reluctant

He was a pretty handy finisher and would give a couple of decent overs with the ball too.

Pakistan would kill to have a player like him in the side. Not too sure why he has announced retirement though given he has not played in 3 years.

Raina has retired at 33, and here we're giving a second debut to Fawad Alam at 34. :))

Happy retirement.

Most definitely did not fulfil talent.

Essentially he was an Umar Akmal managed by a more professional cricket board and team set up

If he was an Umar Akmal he would have been dumped by India ages ago .

Pakistan afforded Akmal over 200 games and yeh we still talk about mismanagement. He got more chances then he deserved .

Sachin would have had to spend hours digging into his archives to get a photo of him and Raina in test gear together haha! :91:

Suresh Raina communicated his retirement decision to the BCCI a day after he made it public, the Board said on Monday, lauding the former India all-rounder for being a key player in the limited-overs format.

Minutes after the iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his international retirement on August 15, 33-year-old Raina followed his mentor in doing the same, surprising many.

“Attacking left-hand batsman Suresh Raina officially communicated to BCCI on Sunday about his decision to retire from international cricket,” said the BCCI in a statement.

The usual norm is players informing the BCCI before announcing retirement.

Raina represented India in 18 Tests, 226 ODIs and 78 T20Is in an international career spanning 13 years. He also had the honour of captaining the team briefly.

“Under his captaincy, India registered a 3-2 series victory in West Indies and a 2-0 win over Bangladesh in ODIs and a 2-0 T20 International series win in Zimbabwe,” the statement added.

Raina, who scored a century on debut in Tests, is also the first Indian to slam hundreds in all three formats of the game and his centuries were scored outside India.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly paid a glowing tribute to a fellow southpaw.

“Suresh Raina has been one of the key performers in limited overs cricket for India. Coming lower down the order and playing some of the match-winning knocks requires a lot of skill and talent,” Ganguly stated.

“He along with Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni formed a solid middle order for India in ODIs. I wish him and his family all the very best,” he added.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah echoed the sentiment.

“Suresh Raina has been arguably one of the finest T20 batsmen. A live wire on the field, Raina’s prowess as a left-handed batsman was exhibited throughout his cricketing career.

“A big match player, Raina’s cameo against Australia in the quarterfinal in the 2011 World Cup was a testimony to his glittering career that followed. I wish him all the very best in the second innings of his career,” said Shah.

Makes you wonder if retiring makes you lose value in the IPL. Because none of these guys will be picked in the India international teams going forward.

The others were never really long term players for India

A player like Raina would have played 100 tests and 300 ODI's for Pakistan but India had so many options that they could afford to drop him without losing sleep over it. Such is the gulf in the talent pool between the two countries

No. A player with an average of 26 would not have played 100 tests

He was a poor Test player, who was susceptible to the short ball. His average is an accurate reflection of his Test credentials.

Suresh Raina Reveals Why He Retired On August 15 With MS Dhoni

“I knew Dhoni would announce his retirement upon reaching Chennai, so I was ready. I, Piyush Chawla, Deepak Chahar and Karn Sharma reached Ranchi on 14th with the chartered plane, and picked up Mahi bhai and Monu Singh.

“After announcing our retirement, we hugged and cried a lot. I, Piyush, Ambati Rayudu, Kedar Jadhav and Karn sat together after that, talked about our careers and our relationship. We partied during the night. Everyone has to go one day. We don’t want anything but only respect” Suresh Raina told Dainik Jagran.

Raina also revealed why he and Dhoni chose August 15 as the day to announce retirement from international cricket.

“We had made up our minds to retire on August 15. Mahi Bhai’s jersey number is 7 and mine is 3 and put it together and it makes 73. And on Saturday, our country completed 73 years of independence, so there couldn’t have been a better day,” Suresh Raina told Dainik Jagran.

This is called zabardasti ki symbolism. I’ve seen a lot of it on twitter regarding modi and his decisions but surprised even cricketers are joining in on this

Nobody would have cared if he announced his retirement on his lonesome.

He got a lot more recognition since he retired with Dhoni....Sort of taking away from Dhoni's announcement.

Anywho, Raina always brought his A game vs Pakistan.

Played crucial innings in the '09 Champs Trophy, he would have taken them home had it not been for the umpire giving him out when he wasn't.

Played another crucial innings in the 2011 and 2015 World Cup matches vs Pakistan

As I said earlier, it had more to do with them retiring on this year's Independende Day than the postponement of WT20. :inti

He is crazy:)))

Suresh Raina was a ‘terrific team man’ who could have amassed more runs if he had batted up the order, said batting legend Rahul Dravid, saluting him for the role he played in India’s success in limited-overs cricket. The 33-year-old Raina surprised many when he followed his mentor Mahendra Singh Dhoni in international retirement, announcing his decision, just minutes after the former India skipper called it quit on August 15.

Dravid, who had presented Raina with the ODI and Test caps, on Tuesday paid glowing tribute to the left-handed batsman.

“A lot of success that India had in white-ball cricket, a lot of great moments and memories that India had over the last decade and a half, Suresh has been a really big part of that. I think his contribution in white-ball cricket has been fantastic,” he said in a video posted by BCCI on its twitter handle. “He is a World cup winner and Champions Trophy winner. He contributed so much on the field, his energy, the enthusiasm he brought, the way he raised the standard of field …”

Raina is among the few who made centuries across all three formats, having played 18 Tests, 226 ODIs and 78 T20 Internationals while scoring 768, 5615 and 1605 runs respectively. He also has 36 ODI wickets to his name and 13 each in Tests and T20Is.

“One thing we always felt is that Suresh did all the difficult things,” said Dravid, who is the current NCA chief.

“For most part of his career, he batted lower down the order, fielded at difficult positions and bowled some handy overs, and always brought a lot to the team. A terrific team man, who always gave his best, brought great energy to the game and a very skillful batter.

“Honestly his numbers could have been a lot better if he had batted higher up the order, that has been shown in the success he had for CSK (Chennai Super Kings) in the IPL where he bats at no 3. He has been a phenomenal player for IPL.”

Raina has scored 5368 runs in 193 IPL matches for CSK to be placed in the second position in the list of most runs by a batsmen in the history of the T20 tournament. He is only second to India skipper Virat Kohli, who tops the chart with 5412 runs in 177 matches.

“I guess he couldn’t replicate the success of his debut hundred and couldn’t build on that in his Test career but I think his contribution to One-day cricket was fantastic. He was part of a very successful Indian one-day team over the last decade and a half,” Dravid said.

The former India skipper said Raina showed sparks of his brilliance even during his junior days.

“Suresh Raina is one of those really young exciting talents who came through the Indian system in the 2004-05, playing under-19 cricket and doing exceptionally well. You could see even in that time that Suresh was going to be a very very important player for India and that’s how it played out in a decade and a half.”

Raina had also captained India briefly, leading the team to ODI series wins over West Indies and Bangladesh and T20 series victory against Zimbabwe.

He probably has a full time employee for this particular job.

Average player. Should have retired separately from Dhoni. Don't steal his thunder or limelight:moha

Suresh Raina retires from international cricket

I had been so distracted by the retirement of MS Dhoni that I couldn´t write a word about this guy. I of course had to compose a lengthy tribute and all that. Now that the dust has settled somewhat, I thought of this man.

He didn´t have a great career of course, but I always liked Suresh Raina for his dedication and hardwork. He looked like a guy who tried and who wanted to get better. Will always remember him for his two absolutely crunch 30s in the Quarter-Final and the Semi-Final of the ODI World Cup 2011. India wouldn´t advanced to the final without those brilliant innings under extreme pressure. Two innings which carried more value than many centuries. All the best to him for the life ahead.

Former India cricketer, Suresh Raina, has come forward to promote cricket in Jammu and Kashmir, providing opportunities to the underprivileged children in the union territory.

Raina - who announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15 - wrote to Jammu and Kashmir DGP, Dilbag Singh, stating that he wants to help out the youngsters from the region.

“I have etched a mark on the field of international cricket for 15 years, and thus I would like to make use of the knowledge and skills I learned over the years and pass it onto the next generation,” Raina wrote.

Aiming to promote the game in schools and colleges in the rural areas, Raina also plans to find out talented cricketers from the rural areas and offer them skill training.

“My intention is finding out the talented youngsters or children from various parts including schools', colleges and rural areas of J&K. Cricket is not just a sport but it evolves a process which could shape and mould a group of individuals with professional ethics, discipline maintained further in their future life, staying fit and healthy both mentally and physically. When a child undergoes the training for any sports activities he or she is automatically adapted to the discipline of lifestyle as well as aware of the importance of physical fitness. These could be the future of our nation,” Raina wrote in the letter.
