Unbelievable chase.

Maybe there was some pressure off yesterday when Pakistan collapsed but the way he brought back Pakistan into the game and got Aussies trembling and scored those super pressure runs today was amazing.

Got out to a JAFFA in the end but this was one hell of a knock.

Wow wow wow.

Brilliant knock undoubtedly.

One of the best ever( could have been the best of all time had he won it for Pak).

This is easily the knock of the year.

Well played. Reminiscent of Tendulkar's 136 at Chennai.

Doing justice to the Tendulkar comparisons.:narine

Good knock to silence detractors.

Needs to show up more often after this though as well.

A very good knock. Made this session fun to watch. I didn't see him batting last night.

a great knock well done Asad. just want more consistency in your game. knowing him after this ATG Knock he will.get a pair in the next test

The most exciting test series was Pak vs England in England.

And now this test match.

This is why so many neutrals love watching Pakistani cricket. Even without super stars they pull these out of their hats.

Didn't see his team home
Played for his own average
Aesthetically pleasing on the eye but he shrank when the pressure was on
He flopped when we were so close to victory

Almost guided Pakistan over the line. Nevertheless, a great knock under immense pressure

So jealous of Aussie pacers.

How can you produce amazing deliveries like that in the time of need.

If it were Indians, we may have even lost it.

Shafiq was considered to be a mental midget on this board who can't handle pressure.

H sure proved a lot of his critics wrong.

Superb innings on a touch pitch, against good bowlers, under immense pressure. People forget that a low score here would have meant that he was dropped for the next match and possibly, for the foreseeable future.

Well played! Though he should have won it for Pak. But I like he's not a tuk tuk player. Scores under pressure and has solid defense.

Brilliant innings, would have probably won the match too if not for that jaffa from Starc.

wow. This is a knock you would expect Miandad or Asif Iqbal to play. Scoring with tail over 200 runs.

Might be a bit weak mentally and a little inconsistent, but he is one of the emotionally strongest players. Calm as ice. :shafiq2

Not exactly one of the great inning in history of the game but certainly one of the better one from any Pakistani batsman, a memorable knock.

No point in seeking moral victories..

Only final result which counts.. And if it weren't for Smith's pathetic captaincy, things wouldn't even have come this far.

It was a ripper from Starc, simply unplayable delivery and that's what it took to finally dismiss Shafiq, no shame in that.

This thread isn't about moral victories. It's to praise Shafiq's cool innings.

let them arrrive in india.....2 or 3 innings defeat are awaited..

I was talking about them in Aus/SA/NZ/Eng conditions mainly.

They know how to get you out.

In SC, its a different ball game. But even here, if they were defending a huge total, you would back them to eventually get you out.

That was a fantastic knock. Best of his career.

Took an absolute brute of a delivery to knock him over.

For a Pak team that has been consistently dominated by the Aussies in Australia for last 2 decades, this match even though it resulted in another loss will actually boost us psychologically as we haven't been able to compete with Aussies in their backyard. Scoring 450 in 4th innings of a mammoth run chase is sure to lift the spirits after the horror start.

We will now have the confidence & self-belief that we CAN score against this Aussie bowling attack which was lacking in the 1st innings.

Wicket was flat, but you need to see that how many runs he added with tail. Till, yesterday it was probably just keep playing and get close, but today I saw every ball and Pakistan was seriously thinking about win from the start. With Yasir he played very well.

Also, one of the best knocks by Pakistan automatically means that it is one of the best knocks in cricket as well.

i am actually disappointed with smith behavour..he said i just playd against pak in eng,he doesnt count uae in his record....they will be shown there place once again in sc...this team cant last for more than 50 overs on a turning track...yap starc is a world class.

He didn't look the same bowler once hazelwood started swinging into him
It was a matter of time

He had played a bad hook shot and missed only just before he got bounced out

Taking nothing from Assad and I am only muttering about how he didn't take his team home it was an absolute solid innings from him and he showed his might and worth

High quality innings .

I have posted this a million times I think . Asad's technique suits Australian pitches , he will do better in places like Aus and SA than in Eng or NZ .

Things wouldn't have come to this if Smith and Lenhann would have done things differently.. Enforcing the follow-on for once. If not, batted until all-out or got the lead of 550 in 2nd inning. If there were two days left then why give the opposition even tinniest chance?

And Smith's field setting on day 5 didn't make any sense either.. They were acting like they were continuing from day 4th rather than staring everything from fresh on day 5.

I am baffled how lehmann can keep his spot after disastrous away tours and things have come down to this point at home as well?

Not his technique rather the pace that Australian pitches provide which he isn't able to create on his own.

Might be other result if misbah batted well in any one of the innings Australians are snobby will lose someday with this attitude if they declare latter with 550 pakistan will have lost earlier blocking

One of the most memorable test match knocks from a Pakistan batsman. I guess there is some decent talent in batting and some of the youngsters should be given at least 10 test matches without the fear of being dropped.

And some genius English psychiatrist said that Asad Shafiq was mentally disintegrated, and needed a long break from cricket.

It reminds me of when Wile E. Coyote introduced himself.

"My name is Wile E. Coyote. Super Genius."

Well, my name is Junaids. Super Genius.

He did a good job , Maybe could have won , but still a big knock under pressure.

By the way you have Pic of maulana moududi , have you read his books or just keept it ?

You're clearly exaggerating it, yes no doubt it was a special knock but it didn't translate into a win, he bottled it exactly when it mattered and you could see the nerves in his body language in last few overs when Aussies kept a tight lid on the runs flow. He was looking jittery and I knew it was only a matter of time before he got dismissed.

Taking nothing away from his monumental effort to salvage some of the pride besmirched due to Pakistan's first innings but he needs to work on his mental approach to the game, first SA, then NZ and now this. I've keenly observed he scores fluently and impressively when there is no pressure (akin to batting in a lost cause) but whenever he gets a sniff of the victory and is within striking distance to pull of the remarkable, the pressure mounts on him consequently and he eventually succumbs to its dominance over him, leaving his team stranded and throwing away a potential opportunity to win a match.

Its becoming an issue with him lately as he isn't able to take his team over the line in situations like these after doing all the hard work and it should be looked at if he were to overcome this mental block. Nevertheless, regardless of the outcome, he can take a lot positives from this resilient performance and it'll do his confidence a world of good going forward in his career.

I don't think his dismissal can be counted as 'throwing' it away. It was a great delivery. Some may have taken a blow instead, that was the only alternative.

brilliant knock , could not have come at a right time for him.

he could have sat out in the next game had he failed but what a knock.

What was very impressive was how he led the tail

Ofcourse most of the credit goes to the tail to actually scoring but credit must be given to how he took them along and let them gain confidence.

I remember I made a post before this series where I spoke of Asad shafiq's ability to bat with the tail and how it would come good and be extremely vital in Australia if Pakistan were to win anything or be competitive at least. I got POTW for it. Asad proved me right.

Probably has played the best innings of his career already. One of the few players in the team one can be proud of at the moment.

No need to be excited he follows up these knocks with some real duds i will only be pleased if he shows more consistency a player of his skills should not be averaging only 41.

A top knock that will be remembered for years to come

Well done lad Now go on and make another couple of tons for the team

reminds me Azharuddin knock of this. http://www.espncricinfo.com/ci/engine/match/63566.html.
There's lot of similarities in these two knocks, both of them have string of low scores coming to this, when they come to bat there's little to no chance to win so they just attack, when they're within the reach they both got out and they loss the match!

Best pressure player in Pakistan cricket history.

OMG who's here shaz619 SL_Fan.

As this week progresses and we are able to move beyond celebrating this special effort, it would be right for people to ask: Can he follow it up with something special at MCG?

Brilliant innings. The way he handled pressure is praiseworthy.

It is definitely one of the best innings in the game of cricket.

His career so far suggests that the answer to your question is a big NO.

But if an innings like this doesn't give him the confidence to go on and score more, I don't know what will.

2 drop catches:) but yes a good innings, would have really been great if we have had won the match.

hope he scores more in coming 2 test matches

A top order ton is always more valuable unless he is winning matches at no.6.

This is special so lets acknowledge his achivement.

Haha his history doesn't suggest much

It is curious though. Shafiq is toast of Australia and getting all the headlines now and did in England when he scored in lords and then oval.

It's almost as if you can do nothing the whole career and just turn up for England and Aussie tours and you'll get a lot of good press and hype. But if you go missing on these tours and beast it elsewhere you don't get half the global hype

It was a good knock but end of the day it didnt count towards a win. The way we are rejoicing is like we won the match which isnt the case. We need to take this momentum to next match and ensure that we remain consistent. Asad Shafiq plays one such innings every series and then reverts to his poultry farm.

Lets see where he ends up in this one before drawing the conclusion

What pressure , Pak was never in a situation to win Good innings yes , pressure inning BIG NO.

OTT eulogizing aside, the way he got out was pretty embarrassing tbh, he was made to look all at sea with the awkward bounce that Stark generated off the pitch, instead of sticking his bat out to defend himself, he should've taken a blow for the team as the gravity of situation warranted it, we were on the brink of a historic run chase and moments like these don't come very often, but alas he chose to prioritize his safety over creating history and chickened out.

How is it embarrassing to get out to a ball that bounced extra? You make it seem like no other batsman gets out in that manner. It's often instinctive for a batsman to jump on his toes and try to ride the bounce.
