Take a bow the golden generation of New Zealand cricketers

On This Day last year, New Zealand beat India to lift the mace!

Two things: Bond was better than Akhtar.

Moreover, we are not talking about Bond’s legacy and standing in the game. He doesn’t have one, because he didn’t play enough.

We are talking about whether Bond makes an all-time New Zealand XI based on his quality and skill, and the answer is a resounding yes.

Similarly, Akhtar is a nobody in terms of legacy but does he make an all-time Pakistan XI? Most certainly, it is not even a question. A fit, peak Akhtar would get into any Pakistan XI in any era.

There is no contraction in what I said, it is just your poor interpretation of what I said.

There is no contradiction but the argument still reads like a hyperbole based on a flimsy assumption.
Judging a talent based on 18 tests isn’t exactly being data driven. There have been many test players who fell off a cliff after extraordinary starts. Pakistani players specialize in this in fact..
This however doesn’t mean Bond wasn’t the top talent NZ produced, but just that it’s hard to conclude based on just 18 tests. Folks like Southee, Wagner, and Boult present more favorable signals

Southee was pathetic this Test, got taken apart brutally. The golden age of Kane, Taylor, Boult, Southee, Wagner is coming to an end.

Southee has developed a technique flaw - his left arm is collapsing in his delivery stride, so he is losing pace and lift. He will correct that in the nets with good coaching.

That depends on the skill-set of the player. Some players do hit a purple patch in the beginning of their careers and then they taper off.

For example, Mike Hussey had an ODI average of 80+ after his first year in international cricket, but you always knew that he wasn’t someone who would go down as one of the all-time great batsmen.

There was nothing about Bond’s bowling that would give you the impression that he was going to lose his way and fall of a cliff. He had no novelty factor; he was not getting lucky wickets.

He was simply a breathtaking fast bowler with everything in his locker. The fact that injuries ruined his career is one of the great tragedies of cricket let alone New Zealand cricket.

Boult, Southee and Wagner are all fine bowlers, but anyone who has watched all four bowl would testify that these three are not even in the same ballpark as Bond.

Sure, their aggregate numbers look better because they played more, but someone like Imam would also end up with more runs and hundreds than Saeed Anwar and you would never dare to compare them. Imam is a very fine player but Saeed belonged to a different class.

Bond is regarded as the greatest New Zealand bowler since Sir Richard Hadlee and that verdict has not been revisited in spite of the success of the current New Zealand bowlers in the last few years.

Bond was a different level to those 3.

Boult is still a gun bowler, but Southee seems to have lost his way at the moment — his figures for the series are really poor. Even today, he bowled a magic ball to Root early on but then got badly tonked afterwards.

NZ getting totally blown out the water on home turf by England.

Seems like the end of the golden generation.

It's been pretty apparent for a while.

Losing a Test against Bangladesh at home showed the cracks were appearing and the cycle was over.

This NZ team has regressed true but I want to see how they perform with Jamieson in the team. He will surely raise the level of this team.

Conway is carrying this NZ team as of now and Williamson is bashing minnows mostly. But I feel with the inclusion of Jamieson, NZ can still do better. Southee also will most likely look better with the presence of Jamieson at other end and maybe Boult as well if he can make a comeback.

They do have known names in this team - Latham, Conway, Williamson, Mitchell, Blundell, Bracewell, Southee, Henry, Wagner. Barring Nicholls, all are international standard.
