I would be lying if I said I'm not disappointed whilst writing this today. I'm more than disappointed and rather frustrated but going back and looking through the campaign Pakistan has had I can say it was a good one but not a successful one.

Going into the world cup Pakistan were never the contenders, heck even Bangladesh was rated more than our team. There was a good reason that we weren't rated much and it pretty much stemmed from our inept bowling department. The likes of Shaheen, Haris and Hasan were pretty much punching bags before the world cup, yes even Shaheen was smacked all over. So it was fair to assume that with this bowling lineup add pre-world cup Shadab we were destined for embarrassment.

Then came the opening game vs India. It was a super hyped contest like it always has been and pretty sure there were more than a billion eyeballs on that game that day. That game was just something else altogether. The Pakistan team on field that day was just breathtakingly superior and professional in every department of the game. This was the kind of fresh air we have never seen in our lives before and each player complimented the other and took responsibility in that game. After winning that game there was an aura that this team could go all the way and the aura was created rightly so as we were very much a complete team.

Throughout the group stages Pakistan surprised us by finding a new hero in each game whilst our bowling (the weakest cog) was holding its head high through the group stages. There is a catch here though that the group stages were against much weaker sides except New Zealand.

On the semi-final day I was in high spirits like most others too. Like it has been throughout the tournament Rizwan impressed me yet again with his mental ability to fight through tough stages and take his innings deep to capitalise later. Babar played Babar shots before gifting his wicket which absolutely infuriated me. I was very mad at Babar as to how he can't just look at his partner's ability to fight difficult phases and why he just has to capitulate in such occasions. This has not been the first time for Babar and won't be the last. It makes me think if we have someone in the team with the composure of Rizwan to block any rush of blood to brain in pressure situations then it makes absolute sense for him to lead on field as well as his calm way of fighting outside the box would yield more and better results. One example I would add in here from semi-final is that when Shaheen was bowling to Wade and he bowled a wide down the leg side Rizwan put his hand up to tell Babar that drop short fine leg fielder all the way back to fine leg as he could see Shaheen going full but Babar waved to Rizwan that he is not changing the field and would stick with his field. We all know Wade ramped Shaheen in that direction for couple of sixes in next three balls. Me here thinks that had the fielder dropped all the way to fine leg after the wide then Wade would not have played those ramp shots. This is where decision making in pressure situations should lie with the person who's judgement is not clouded.

Going further on the semi-final, its fair to say Fakhar played a blinder of an innings that day dispatching the likes of Starc for long sixes was great to see. Overall, with 175+ on board I was happy but I knew we need to get wickets not just early but throughout the game. Then came that opening over from Shaheen (what a find for an opening bowler, will be a great test bowler). Shaheen was on point and was unlucky not to get Marsh out too when ball missed stumps. Warner went on charge but there was no support around him so although he was plummeting sixes I always knew he would take that extra risk and lose his wicket as there was no one around him to bail him out to play the long innings. This is exactly what happened when Warner nicked and went back. As soon as Stoinis and Wade were in middle and survived 2 overs I knew these are alarm bells for Pakistan as we have seen throughout if the batsmen spend 10 balls or so on wicket they can take any bowlers on. Babar's captaincy surprised me again when he decided to bowl Hasan for 16th over rather than Imad. From all cricket that I have seen if you consistently bowl pace for last 6 overs of the game you would be taken for runs you need a break from pace overs in the last 6 which Babar didn't do and Imad didn't complete his quota while Hasan did.

Now onto the infamous moment of the match where Hasan dropped Wade in penultimate over. Now no one can see future but what guarantee is there had Hasan taken that catch Stoinis would not have hit Haris for 2 sixes in next over? We can blame Hasan all we want but while we are at it we should also blame Fakhar and Shaheen equally for missing two easy run-out chances. Let's also blame Babar then for not having Fakhar all the way on boundary when Stoinis attacked Shaheen and it barely went over Fakhar for six. Its a collectively bottling effort that happened yesterday and yes the captain bottled followed by his team.

Overall, Pakistan had a good tournament albeit not a successful one. Moving on now we have another T20I WC in Australia. Whilst the core of this team with their planning is set the personnel to deliver that plan has to change. I would not move away from the idea of accumulating whilst playing good shots in first 8 overs and then attacking the remaining 12. This is something that has historically worked for Pakistan and has worked in this tournament too. From my memory when Pakistan is 20-3 or 25-3 then they have never won matches from there and with Rizwan/Babar on top we have avoided the above position all the time.

Now for next world cup I would stick my head out and say to both Hafeez and Malik that writing is on the wall and they have to go. Not just their age but in Australia and quick wickets they are nothing but a liability as batters and as fielders. Similarly, I would keep an eye out on Imad but he has to go as he is a liability on the field and does not bring anything to table apart from 2 overs at top.

I would also try to bring in another pace bowling allrounder, yes I'm talking about Faheem Ashraf as he can bowl pace like Mitch Marsh but can play pace bowling too. In a nutshell my suggested team that we should start working towards to build would be as follows:

1. Rizwan
2. Babar
3. Fakhar
4. Haider
5. Iftikhar
6. Asif Ali / Sohaib Maqsood
7. Shadab
8. Nawaz / Faheem Ashraf
9. Haris Rauf
10. Muhammad Amir / Mohd Wasim Jr
11. Shaheen

Like it or not we need Amir in our setup for tournaments. This guy is not a bottler like many other bowlers we have in the team. So PCB work with him and strike a deal somehow so he plays tournaments for us.

Faheem averages 11 with bat. If he wants to get into the team as a bowler then he’s in competition with Rauf, Shaheen and Dahani.

If he wants to get into the team as an all rounder, he’ll be behind Mohammad Wasim jnr, Amir Yamin, Amad Butt etc

Sharjeel Khan should be brought back into the team, his record in Aus speaks for itself.

Asif Ali should play every game leading up to the next WC. His role in the team is to come in the last 2-3 overs and hit a quick fire 30-40. What I don’t want to see is, Asif Ali coming in the 10th over and people expecting him to rebuild an innings. That would be like asking Babar and Rizwan to hit 40 from 10 balls in the last 5 overs. Not gonna happen.

We need a proper 2nd spinner in the playing 11. Nawaz is not bad option as he brings variety and all round capabilities

Shaheen emerging as a dangerous opening bowler and teams would be wary facing him. But they would also be confident of facing him in death overs. So he needs to develop slower or knuckle balls. But his ceiling is high and has time to learn.

Babar and Rizwan consistency and they will go a notch above with experience

Hafeez and Malik is not the answer for middle overs. Should bring in more dynamic players

Hasan Ali totally exposed against good teams under pressure

Asif Ali emerging as a big hitter and game changer but I believe he still lacks killer instinct and teams will not still fear him like a prime Dhoni

Part timers like hafeez will not succeed 8/10 times in a big game under pressure

Should always experiment with team combinations against smaller teams. I felt dahani and hyder Ali or Nawaz could have slotted 2 games back

Many thanks for your post

We have now added it to our ICC T20 World Cup 2021 and Beyond the Boundary section

For me the team needs to built for Australian conditions and I must say some players will need to be moving out including Hafeez and Malik.

You can't blindly keep sticking with Shaheen, Hassan, Rauf as your pacers. All 3 go for plenty at the death. You need guaranteed economical bowlers in the middle and end to form a really effective consistent bowling attack.

As far as batting is concerned, our ultra conservative go slow early and just hit out at the end needs to change.

Learnings from 2021 WT20 + Bucket List for 2022 WT20

I know there was a lot of heartbreak and drama, but at the end of the day, we lost whilst putting up a fight.

A good effort in the tournament by the team, something to be proud of.

There are a lot of things to dissect, and a lot of things to learn going into the next WT20.

I'll try to list as many as I can:

1.) Form matters. Hasan Ali, though I don't intend to blame him for the loss, was in horrible form since the QEA. He was given too many games without performances and should have been rested or dropped. For bowlers especially, if they struggle with rhythm, they will be easy to target in T20Is. For the upcoming WC, if a bowler is out of form, I believe that he should not be played.

2.) Experienced bowling. Whilst our bowling attack is quite young and have good performances, an experienced figure would have been helpful. Bowling in the death with variety is needed, and I believe that a Wahab Riaz type of bowler could have been very useful in these conditions. Experienced bowlers will be able to provide some useful skills in tough situations.

3.) Predictable death bowling needs to change. I remember in the T20 series against England, their batsmen were scooping Haris Rauf and Shaheen Shah Afridi as well. In the death, I believe that we need to diversify the bowling plans. Wide yorkers or bouncers should be used. A good tactic could be for bowlers to go around the wicket and bowl across the batsmen, because sloggers tend to have weak off-side games. This needs to be looked into.

4.) Spinners' struggle against left-handers has become too prominent in this campaign. Imad Wasim needs to figure out how to bowl to left-handed batsmen, and so does Shadab.

5.) The powerplay batting will need to be shuffled around in my mind. Australia is a country where the ball comes onto the bat, so I believe someone like Haider Ali should be introduced into the team as an opener with Babar Azam at #3. We need someone to be aggressive against the pacers, whereas Rizwan is comfortable against spin. If the change does not work out, then we can always go back to Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan.

6.) Dot ball percentages were very high. We need to learn how to pick the doubles, singles are not enough in T20s. More effective strike rotation will be helpful for us.

Now for the bucket list:

I would retain the following players for the WT20 in Australia:
1.) Babar Azam (c)
2.) Shadab Khan (vc)
3.) Mohammad Rizwan (wk)
4.) Shaheen Shah Afridi
5.) Haris Rauf
6.) Fakhar Zaman
7.) Asif Ali
8.) Imad Wasim

The remaining positions, I would look to test out a few players:

In place of Shoaib Malik/Mohammad Hafeez: Sahibzada Farhan, Iftikhar Ahmed, Sohaib Maqsood, Salman Ali Agha.

For the fast bowler slots: Shahnawaz Dahani, Hasan Ali, Wahab Riaz, Mohammad Wasim Jr.

For other spin options: Zahid Mahmood, Usman Qadir, Abrar Ahmed, Mohammad Nawaz.

As stated, we should be proud of the team. Yes, a few costly blunders prevented our progression, but good teams learn from these mistakes.

The Semi-Final loss to Australia in the ICC T20 World Cup is a blessing only if......

1. Hafeez and Malik are forced into retirement

At this stage, its unbelievable how Malik finds his way into the Bangladesh squad. If you cant even pick fresh squads against Bangladesh, who then ? Also Hafeez should not ge in a position to "opt" out. He should be told in no uncertain terms that his international career is over.

2. Never appoint local coaches for the foreseeable future

The difference a few weeks with Hayden and Philander have done to this team is unbelievable. Waqar and Misbah couldnt do jack in 2 years and just came up with excuses over and over again. Pakistani coaches are mostly useless at this level.

3. Continue with the extensive use of analytics and expand its use to selection etc

The sudden professionalism of Pakistan can be explained by the contract signed by PCB to use Cricviz's database and query tools which has clearly been used to good effect. This should be extended further and, if possible, be used extensively for selection of squads as well in addition to planning lineups/match ups etc.

There were a few good players in the recent National T20 Cup who you would want to see progress like Ali Imran, Amad Butt, Mohammad Akhlaq, Mohammad Nawaz with the bat, Nasir Nawaz, Abdullah Shafique, Qasim Akram etc.

Would also like to see fitness improvement from Rumman Raees, his death bowling would be a good tool to have for the next T20WC. Would like to see some more spinners come through. I think Pakistan would need a solid AR, a option of a 4th pace bowler and handy batsman in T20WC.

PCT does look great when in momentum , the spark was there like in CT 2017.

But I’ll be honest I cannot wait for Indian team to play PCT again, all these refreshing changes are great but once again when other teams become cautious and makes plans against you, then how you cope up is a big deal.

PCT had a lot going for it this tournament, they were wounded due to Kiwis and english pullout and wanted to prove a point as well.

So how much do Hayden and Philander actually matter would only be visible in next 6 months.

I'm in awe of OP's relentless energy 24 hours later:))

I think the Malik-Hafeez point is valid though. It was kind of embarrassing to watch their ages come up yesterday - sure, age is just a number, but when you have Malik acting like some hero and giving speeches lapped up by eager fans, after pummeling some minnow team in the final overs of the 1st innings of an inconsequential game, you know it's terribly wrong.

Our fast-bowling was good apart from one weak link.

Mohammad Amir has done nothing to merit a spot on the team.

If he performs and proves my statement wrong, then I would consider.

Right now, in an absence of players, we need to continue backing our players.

Good post by the way, very well written.

I would hope for a mystery spinner as well.

Someone like Abrar Ahmed, if developed properly, can be an asset.

I have only one blessing in disguise.

I felt Pakistan fans, ex players, politicians and assorted others had lost their marbles - and humility - after the Indian game. This was just one tournament and 2 good performances.

Too long Pakistan have been making heroes out of people who win nothing - case in point: Some random Pakistani olympian who makes it to knockout stages.

Pakistan did very well. But they are still no 5 and 6 in tests and ODIs. Even T20s is 4th.

I hope some humility is learnt, but I doubt it.

PK players and team played above expectations and have the basis of a decent team developing. We are 2 good middle order bats short of a top team

Not untill pakistan win any away test series or Win 1-2 match every test series they will play in away tour Or if they can win upcoming WTC final .

We have a solid team developing with 3 World Class players in Babar, Riz and SSA and that's enough to be competitive. We need to play more tests against good teams and that isnt going to happen

Pakistan death bowling is worst amongst top team.this is the area where They want to improve before next World Cup.

Death bowling was a problem throughout the tournament. Both India and Afghanistan got a lot more than they should have in the last 4. I think that is the main area to focus on over the next 12 months, before the next WC. Im not sure Philander is the right guy for that, he was not a T20 bowler and SAF in general were never a good death bowling team. We need to identify the bowlers for the last 4 over and back them over the next 12 months.

Going back to the match, the biggest trick Babar missed was not attacking more in the powerplay. Given Warners record against Imad he should never have gotteba second ocer, infact once Finch was gone in the first over Hasan should have been told to attack with new ball from the other end.

On other issue to highlight. Shaheen and Rizwan cannot keep this pace up over all 3 formats. We need alternatives there

We are better than we thought we are, we have the basis of decent team, and overall we are progressing to something good. We need two good, intelligent middle order players and more competition for our spin bowlers.
