Full Name: Mohammad Zeeshan
Date of Birth: 15 Apr 2006, Faisalabad (Chak 58 JB Lillan)
Major teams: Pakistan Under-19s, Central Punjab Blues Under 19s, Central Punjab, Bahawalpur Royals
Batting style: Right-handed
Bowling style: Right Arm Medium Fast
Height: 6ft 8in

Interest in Cricket

I am the youngest of three brothers in my family, and it was my elder brother who had an interest in the game but given our financial circumstances, he could not pursue a career in the game like he wanted to. Instead, he told me to go ahead and take up cricket as a profession and pursue my dreams of becoming a cricketer.

Tall height an advantage but comes with its own problems

I am exceptionally tall within my immediate family although I do have an uncle and a cousin who are also very tall. My friends would playfully make fun of my height calling me 'lamba', which wasn’t that much of a problem for me. But whilst my height has given me some advantage when it comes to bowling, there are a few problems as well. So, for example, if I like some shoes, I can’t find it in my size, or when I really want to buy some cricket kit that I like, it’s either out of stock for my size or not available at all and then I have to settle for something that I don’t really want - all this can be very frustrating. And then, sitting on long-haul flights such as the one I had to when I travelled to the West Indies for the Under-19 World Cup can also very uncomfortable.

Late bloomer - Playing hard-ball cricket at age 15

I was happy playing cricket for fun with friends and was coached by my elder brother until I went to Faisalabad and joined the Faisal Club after appearing for and impressing everyone with my bowling. My height and the bounce I got from the pitch was something they really liked at the club and I was given a chance to play hard-ball cricket. Later on, I played in the National Under-19 One-Day Cup 2021/22 and the National Under-19 Championship 2021/22 which consisted of 3-day games.

First international tournament, first international flight

After performing well at the domestic Under-19 level, I was selected as one of the traveling reserves for the ICC Under-19 Men's Cricket World Cup which was held earlier this year. Whilst I did not participate in any games in the tournament, the experience of visiting a foreign country and being part of a tournament squad was amazing. This was also the first time that I flew on a plane, and I had to learn some interesting new life skills.

Staying fit and eating the right village diet

I give a lot of attention to my fitness as this is a key part of any sportsperson’s life. In my case though, apart from fitness training in the morning and bowling in the nets, being a villager, I have the advantage of having access to ‘Desi Khoorak’ (village or home prepared food) which I find to be the best for my development. This sort of diet which includes pure butter, eggs, sugar and milk may feel strange to some city folk but it works for me like a charm.

Improving bowling speeds an objective

Whilst I have done well as a fast-bowler, I have always wanted to become an all-rounder but in recent times I haven’t had much time to practice my batting, but rest assured this is something I am paying attention to. My most preferred ball and the one that gives me a lot of wickets is the bouncer although I am also good at bowling Yorkers. My bowling speed has been measured around the 135KpH mark which I really want to improve upon in the future. I am working hard to sort this part of my bowling and I believe I will improve as a bowler as well as improving my speeds, God Willing.

Shoaib Akhtar and Curtly Ambrose as my role models

When it comes to bowling at fast speeds, there is no one better for me to emulate than our very own Shoaib Akhtar but if one was to ask me who is my role model, the one bowler I would want to be copy, then I would without a doubt say Curtly Ambrose.

Topping the charts in the Pakistan Junior League

To be part of a unique tournament like the inaugural edition of the PJL was an honour in itself but then to become the highest wicket-taker with 14 wickets in 8 games was like a dream come true. For that I am thankful to the coaches and also to our mentor for Bahawalpur Royals, Imran Tahir, for his advice and support throughout the tournament. To play alongside local and foreign players was a great experience and one that I will treasure for a long time.

Playing for Pakistan U19s against Bangladesh

After missing out in the Under-19 World Cup in the West Indies, I finally got a chance to shine for my country in the white-ball series against the visiting Bangladesh Under-19s. I played in 3 One-Day games taking 6 wickets in 3 matches and participated in one T20 where I had figures of 2/24. This was an amazing feeling to wear my country’s colours and what gave me a lot of confidence was the fact that the opposition batters treated me with a lot of respect. They would be going all guns blazing against the other bowlers but possibly due to my height, were careful when facing my bowling.

Future aspirations and dreams of playing in the PSL

A place in a Pakistan Super League team would be great for me but representing Pakistan in the future is what I am really aiming for and working hard on. Whether it’s in the white-ball or the longer red-ball format, I am ready to serve Pakistan when asked and when they feel I am ready to.

Good interview. Would be really interesting to see how he develops.

He has the potential to become a quality pacer but, his hunger of succeeding at the top level as well as him giving extra importance to his fitness considering his height would be the key. Modern day cricket has three formats, there are leagues around and if he reaches top level international calendar then it can sometimes be pretty packed so if he wants to play all three formats then he would have to become a top athlete.

If he is interested in red ball cricket then getting in the FC team and playing atleast 6-7 matches in couple of seasons would be an initial success in itself. As we have seen bowlers either struggling to do so or selectors selecting them too early for any format which means non availability during the 4 day season.

So he has the potential but, development would be on his personal hunger and PCB’s selection committees approach towards allowing these young guys to develop before putting them into that international circuit which can hold a certain development part back and can only come after playing regular longer format matches which only domestic cricket can offer.

Wishing him all the best.

good that he takes Curtly Ambrose as role model.

Ambrose at some point could afford to not even have much swing/seam and just bowl at full length to get easy wickets.

Zeeshan, slightly taller than Ambrose, through his bowling action seems to be going that way, as I always felt that someone like Irfan, despite being even taller, didn't use his height properly because of the left hand angle and his action (not high arm/hitting the deck hard).

Strength and conditioning is the key here.

He has height, he has a bit of pace, but making sure he has the right diet, the right advice, the right training will determine how his future is.

I just hope he's not left to his own devices by PCB.

Good action and loving the bounce he's getting. He's been blessed with all the ingredients of a quality pace bowler so is already ahead in the race. Ultimately the responsibility will be his own if he wants to make it big. Should keep his head down, work hard and minimize the outside noise.

Needs a lot of work on his action if he is to make the most of physical attributes. As I said before his action is a like a guy that has taken up cricket late in his teens. He needs to keep his arm high and not let it drop like the slingers do.

As part of its strategy and vision to develop, grow and incentivise high-performing talented youngsters, the Men’s Interim Selection Committee have added three top-performers from age-group cricket to the Pakistan Test squad with the objective of providing them international exposure and experience.

The three players are: all-rounder Arafat Minhas (Multan), top-order batter Basit Ali (Dera Murad Jamali) and right-arm fast bowler Mohammad Zeeshan (Faisalabad).

I think this is good. It’ll allow Shaun Tait to get his eye on Zeeshan and see any potential bad habits he can eliminate, and good habits he can expand on.

Great opportunity for the young man to train alongside international players.

Even if it's just an opportunity to observe, it's still a good chance to pick up some tips for the future.

Seems to fall off from the radar for U19s even though he is still 17. Was a decent talent and can clocked up to 135k every now then till last year , should have improved by now.

Not good enough probably have up cricket. Just had the height going for him that’s it. Has no pace seam movement swing nothing

This tall right-arm bowler has picked up a wicket in the very first over of the opening match between Pakistan and Nepal's U19 teams in AISA CUP 2023. Generates extra bounce with pace. Impressive start.

Some glimpses of Mohammad Zeeshan who dismantled the Nepal U19 team with fabulous figures of 6/19 in 9.2 overs. He claimed the second-best bowling figures for a Pakistan bowler at this level.

@Muhammad Saad What do you think of his action ?

First time I've seen him live during this Nepal match and his head falls away a lot. Have a look at photos 1-3. Surely the momentum should be going where he's delivering the ball ? Can this be easily fixed ?

Seems like that would increase risk of injury too.

On the positive side - has a braced front leg, can move the ball away from the right handers and his height is obviously an asset.

There's some batting talent in him as well. Sent in to finish the game early against Nepal and hit some lusty blows to end up at 20* off 8 balls

Action is fine just slight tweaks needed , actually his action is much better now compare to his action during PJL in which he wasn’t using his jump well but now he is using his jump to gather momentum and unleash the delivery at full throttle, he could come more perpendicular to the wicket as this will stop his head falling away and that will help him using his left arm more and it will result him in getting more zip on his fuller deliveries which currently has a lot less zip and pace compare to his shorter length deliveries, not the best example I am quoting but Faheem Ashraf seems to have perfect action for pacy fuller deliveries and Zeeshan can look forward in to it.

Seems to have some power hitting talent as well , top notch prospect and I can see him playing for Pak in couple of years if he continues to improve and remain fit

proper unit. rare for a pakistani cricketer, especially one this tall to not be lanky.

Reminds me of Cameron Green in terms of height and build. A little bit of Mohammad Irfan as well in his height. But definitely more of a proper unit type.

dude is built like a tank, you often see that with sena or carribean bowlers, rarely for desi bowlers of his height. whilst he has some technical flaws in his action i dont think it matters, if hes comfortable he will add a little more pace with time, and with his height, bounce, and some evident movement he will be a very tough bowler to face.

deserves a PSL emerging slot, even at his current level of development can see him troubling lower quality domestic batsman.

It's these type of bowlers that need investing in one's who are 6ft +

There was another one who fell away had a good outshines and had good height but was too skinny irfanullah shah .

Mohammad Zeeshan 6 wickets against Nepal in ACC U-19 Asia Cup 2023. The lad looks a real deal.

Looks like he has remodeled his delivery a bit from his PJL days. Run has that jump now before he delivers the ball which seems to adding some extra pace. Arm action looks same.

Key will be health for him. Will be lethal for Pakistan if he can stay healthy I think.

They have been working with this guy since 2022. He was part of the camp that trained with the Pakistani team for the Australia series.

What i find funny is the tagline of 17 year old now being used for this guy. A persons height increases till the age of 18. For some reason, Zeeshan's height stopped since the last 2 years lol.

His age is as real as Naseem's age.

But never the less, a tall bowler like him is a good prospect.

Action has got stronger since I last saw him. Pace was serious and for the ball tp swing the seam must be in the right place. Signs are good but now the PCB and his lack education will probably destroy a real talent

I'm fearful for the boy's fitness, but he looks a great prospect

This guy looks at least 24 lmao. Regardless, the physical tools are there so I see potential for sure. Want to see him do this against other teams besides Nepal but lets see

Hoping for the best for this guy! Such height with pass is a winning recipe, we just have to hope he can stay healthy and continue improving.

Not only this guy can bowl, he can bat as well. Can hit some lusty blows. Very good prospect for the future. But 1 thing that had me thinking is his fitness. Will his body allow him to have a prolonged career?

16-18 isn't a period of any great height growth for most people. It's just that technically you are still growing but most height growth occurs till 15-16.

pcb has been working with him since 2022.

He needs to master the outswinger, and also hit the deck hard on offstump channel line length is the key I don't really want him to bowl Express if he can do the top 2 he will be in the mould of asif with shabbir ahmeds height .

He could be a handful eventually increase his pace and become like our andrew Flintoff he's built like freddie and can hit big shots as well

He is a good bowler, but I see some flaws in his techniques. Considering his height, he can take advantage of the release and flight of the ball, consistently delivering short deliveries. If he excels in this area, I believe he can outperform Starc.

It's the hard length that he needs to be consistently good. From that hard length the ball has to move one way or the other. The recipe is simple but incredibly difficult to implement

Does he look 24 or is he actually 24?.I think it is not common to find tall and well built guys in Pakistan so people get suspicious. In England I have seen high school boys who look 20 plus but are 17-18.I have no idea about this guy’s age.PCB should check the age of the players before selecting them.

He will definitely overage, just depends by how much. 4 years is the going rate, so 22 is the most likely age

Working means what? They don't need to teach how to bowl, they need to look after him as far as advice injuries, diet and other areas that will improve his cricket.
working means being on PCB radar and bowling him in nets towards interntional cricketers

Bowling in the nets is pretty much a waste of time. They should be playing in matches, restricting his overs, building his back muscles as tall bowlers are even more vulnerable to back problems. Put him on a contract and plan a diet and general exercise.

Bowling in nets helps alot. And he is getting to bowl in Pakistan international camp, thats a big deal.

If he lives in the NCA than his diet is probably taken care of. However, he cant afford a diet plan on his own expense.

No it doesn't. For FC players it does nothing. Bowling in the middle on a proper pitches makes players understand the whole picture and not just look at a few pixels.

I don't know, he looks younger than that to me but just well built. But then my main sport is football and I've seen some guys in youth teams in Scotland who already look like adults at 15/16 who based on this forum people in Pakistan would assume are in their 20s.

Yeah he has a pretty young face I don’t believe he is a day above 19 or 20 Maslow sure he is built well but that’s probably genetics as even a 25 yr old in Pakistan is rarely this well built

This guy can be a real talent for Pak, however he needs to be managed and looked after very well, if this is done he will be a good player.

What a start today for this tall guy. Came to bowl and picked up a wicket off his 2nd ball. A beautifull line and extra bounce are helping him atm. Looked unplayable.

We need to invest in him, a proper tall fast bowler with decent pace is something Pakistan has dreamed for long. It has been mostly 5'-7'' to 10" midgets in recent times

Jubilant team mates surround Zeeshan as he takes another wicket in the ACC Under 19 Men's Asia Cup encounter between Pakistan and India

Apparently he can hit some big shots as well? Would be amazing if we found our own Marco Jansen. Hope he continues to improve.

Mohammad Zeeshan finished his spell of 10 overs and took 4 wickets for 46 runs. This guy can be a future superstar. Superb bowling from him today again.

The PCB make age verification more complicated than the Kennedy assassination. You can do some background checks and look at the ages of the people they went to school with and if anyone lied, 3 year ban. People will think twice

PCB might collect their birth certificates, but PCB stays silent if a player wants to reduce their age. This is how I see this issue.

Should work on becoming an all format bowler for Pakistan. Excellent performance in match against India today. We need such players in our test team.

Hopefully he can be kept away from PSL or else he will turn in to a Pajama league mercenary in no time

His workload needs to be managed and he should be given cotton wool treatment starting today.

Highlights of his 4/46 against India U-19 in ACC U-19 Asia Cup 2023

Mohammad Zeeshan delivered a stellar performance with the ball, securing figures of 4/46 against India U19s in the ACC U-19 Asia Cup 2023. During the post-match interview with a local channel, he said:

"I had thought about taking out the whole India team but Allah swt allowed me to take 4 wickets instead."

Bowling in nets is practice, and you need that practice. You dont get match practice, first you need to practice your bowling in the nets.

At the level these guys are- net practice actually does a lot of damage especially if the landing areas are really hard. I am not saying no net practice but it has to be monitored. On the pure practicalities of bowling, If you practice in the nets you bowl at the batsman, where in the middle the game is around the 4th stump. Net wickets are hard and bouncier and encourage the bowlers to bowl shorter, whereas the real wickets are slower and lower. Carefully monitored matches will accelerate his progress.
