Talent Spotter : Shadab Khan

i hope he smashes amir after amir gave the poor kid a send off. Huge prospect in the calibre of young razzaq. InshAllah he'll have the worth ethic to go to the top

PZ has been a really boring team. They dropped Asghar of all people for Junaid Khan on a wicket where Hassan Khan and Mahmadullah from QG were getting good assistance.
KAkmal rarely fires, Hafeez is awful and Tamim has been down as well after first match he played, Other than that they are playing guys like Maqsood and Samuels.

They need a new coach next season. Akram is terrible, doesn't have any technical nous. Abdul Rehman needs to take over, he has done wonders for Peshawar in domestic cricket.

Unrelated to your post but thoughts on him?

I unfortunately have had 0 time to watch him with my schedule. As the pessimist (a lot of the time rightly so) of this board, I would want to know if this is hype train or actually might tangibly be something long term.

He is a great talent bro. Best leggie in Pak. Has all of the variations though I haven't seen his slider. Acurrate. Batting is pretty good too. Enough bat as high as 6 in ODIs. Excellent fielder.

He looks very good. Has a good leg-break and also a very good googly, bats well and also looks sharp in the field. In addition, he has the right amount of confidence and composure that you want to see in a young player.

However, as you said, we have been through this too many times, so it's best to adopt the 'prepare for the worst but hope for the best' policy. Let's hope he is not another Nawaz in the making and manages to make the leap from PSL to international cricket.

Nawaz was never good in the first place.

Called him out during the PSL itself, it was a shocker he ended up getting selected for the national side.

Shadab has advantage of being a leg spinner and that too a very good one with sharp variety as a leggy.

Also has some fire and aurora about him which is just fabulous to see. Looked decent against little chance he got to bat but timing against Mohammad Aamir was beautiful too bad he found out Malik.

Exactly. Picked the lengths early, pace was not an issue for him, good reflexes and above all decent placement too.

That was a good scoop, but poor shot selection because there was a deep fine leg. Although the timing was perfect, placement wasn't.

If placement was good, then it wouldn't have gone to the fielder. Saying it is unlucky is just an excuse. Everybody makes mistakes.
Even Shadab.

Umar can play it, but he's also failed at it plenty of times. He would be better off taking it out of his arsenal given how many times it cost him his wicket.
 
He can walk into Pakistan side based on his current form really.
 
Shadab gets into our side based on his bowling alone. That googly of his is breathtaking. To make Pakistan's best batsman when he is in supreme form look like a school boy is no easy feat.

The fact that Shadab is a spectacular fielder and a handy batsman are just some more added benefits.


Also has plenty of swag about him and is not from the mould of "good boys" we have been producing.

I'm tired of the good decent boy %×/÷/ as well. Though I didn't see much aggression or sledging from him.

There's Imad whose attitude is a bit ott, as he doesn't have the skills to back them up.
 
I think if Sharjeel gets cleared Pakistan are building up quite a strong team here...

To be honest those 2 hits on the leg side were DeVilliers esque. I am not comparing the two just saying the way it looked. He is too good a batsman. He should be permanent 6 in LOI till CT. When Malik retires promote him to 5 and Sarfaraz to 4.
 
People are underestimating his batting. He's a genuine bat, and played as a batsman for the first 14-15 years of his life.

I now want to see more of this guy. Have barely seen him bowl couple of balls. So much hype and build-up on PP. Hope he lives up to it.

I've stopped hyping up youngsta beauties, but this guy is giving me some serious hope.

Of course, like all other previous hopes, it's up to him how he does, and can turn out to be mediocre as well. :danish
 
I am excited as well to see the talent, BUT the suggestions mostly I see here will make him a poor man's Afridi.

The MVP of Cricket are the bowling all-rounders - players that make the team on bowling merit, but can bat. It's universal - from Alfred Shaw to Mitchel Starc - in between WG Grace.... Jack Gregorey .... Kieth Miller, Richie Benaud ...... Imran Khan, Ian Botham, Malcom Marshall, Wasim Akram, Shane Warne ........ Ravi Ash to Sakib Al Hasan to Mitchel Johnson. Always - someone who can make the team as at least 4th bowler & bat at 8 or higher.

The reason being the degree of difficulty of the skills in this game. If I take 25 as target bowling average & 45 as batting average - for a player who is at present at 35/35 level; it'll take him at least 3 times effort & skills to bring that bowling 35 to 25 than taking batting 35 to 45.


Sadab has fantastic potential - he has both ways to target a - Gary Sobers or a Richie Benaud. BUT, if he decides to focus on batting at 5 & bowl a bit, he might end up as poor man's Afridi - that's one glorified PSL & 20 years of selling bluff.

Batting is more methodical, process oriented, systematic while bowling is natural. One can't become AB De Villiers just by practicing, but definitely can improve batting. But, for a bowler, if it's lost once, it's gone for ever - that googly against Babar doesn't come out of your hand just from practice - it's God gifted. But, by practicing, one can hit that cover drive of Hasan Ali. We have several examples of batsmen struggling even for couple of years, at the start of career, but they made sterling comebacks. Show me one bowler who started big, then lost it & later make a glorious come back - just one. I can give opposite examples - Massie, Gilmore, Dodemaide, Sivaramakrishnan, Hirwani, Ajantha Mendis, Reon King, Md. Zahid just from recent times ....... probably Yasir is heading that route as well.

This kid MUST try to become the best leggi in world - if he doesn't reach there, still he'll end up close to there. Whoever his mentor is, MUST make sure every time he loses focus on bowling, he is dragged back to there - talk always about bowling, tell stories about great bowlers, show dreams about how he is taking a 5for in a WC Final - always . For that, only way he can reach there is by bowling lots of overs - may be 50-60 over per FC match & may be 4 hours at nets - his entire focus should be bowling & bowling & bowling for next 3/4 years. PAK selectors and Captains have to back him, so his PSL Franchise. And from PakPassion - I am sure this kid browses post related to him - words & ideas like AB de Villiers, No. 4/5, replacing Malik should be ex-punched from PP - it should be only Warne, Qadir, Benaud, Googly, Flipper, Stock Big Leggi, drift, loop, drop, slider, top spinners, castle the sticks through legs, LBW without offering .............

If it costs his batting, so it be - still once his bowling skills are established, by 23-25, he can refocus on batting & in 1/2 years time he'll become a good batsman, because the fundamentals are there. But, if he loses focus from his bowling, in a year time he'll become Saad Nasim. Delayed batting focus won't end him like AB, but if he ends up like Hafeez with bat, it's more than enough if he can match Qadir with ball .......

Ideally he should follow gary sobers footstep though he is a fan of steven smith so i hope he does not give up on his bowling

Btw, is this true that qadir had more than 1 googlies, one used to come from back of hand and the other was with usual leg spin kinda action and i am not sure whether there was the third.

Fundamentals of Googly is same, but Qadir had extreme control of his Googly & he knew exactly how much he is going to turn & bounce on a particular wicket. What he did was varying speed, flight & adjusted length/line with that, which looked different from ball to ball. The leg sin kind of action one was what later Warne called his Zooter (Flipper) - bowled with same traditional leg spin action & grip, but at release point they used to loose the middle finger (Might be other secrets as well - it's definitely not that simple). I am not aware of any other tricks.

However, their skills wasn't that variation - anyone can bring several variations in leg spin. The trick is in bowling 6 balls at exact desired spot - Ware could do it almost 6 times, hence his average was 26, Qadir could do it less frequently, hence his average was 32. But, at their perfection - many modern great batting lineup will bat twice in a day on batting belters (like shoulder arming O'Keefe's deadly in cutter from reverse out swing.........)

Wrist was either for toppie,slider or googly. Shadab bowls google more often so bad batting by Babar.

Alot easier to say that when you have the benefit of slow mo and replays, alot harder to do it when you have split second to spot the wrist position, flight of the ball, its speed, where it is pitching and what shot you need to play at it.

He was playing a dead bat so he just needed to play the line. Trust me Babar probably told Usama to give him that ball 100 times in nets. I guess he was just not focused enough today.

Hes not ready for national team. Maybe for t20. But he isnt ready for proper test or even odi cricket

Needs to be as good with his main delivery which is legbreak
 
I think he get super excited too easily , need to calm down and find consistency , never the less top notch talent.
 
Great fielder. All players in Pakistan should be at least as good if not better. Hope he doesn't turn into Umar or Yasir.

He is better than Yasir Shah. He may struggle like many young spinners do but on the hand, if sticks to bowling leg spin unlike Yasir, who doesnt really have a leg spinner, he will be successful.

You aren't going to get a finished product. He has done well against good opposition in the PSL, good enough for me.

Great PSL - now work with Mushi & 35 hours/week in nets to master a big spinning leggi as STOCK Ball. Without that, in a year or two, he'll end up in between Afridi, Saad Nasim or Mansoor Amzad. Without big spinning leggi, his Googly will become what Ajmal's doosra ended up in later stages in couple of years time.

He could also be end up like Tahir, who is very good LOI bowler, googlie and flippers are his major arsenals...But I don't disagree he needs to work hard on his leggy, I like the attitude, atheletism, swagger in him at such a young age, just hope does not get to his head...Continue to work on your development is hardest thing, when you get early success, but that's what separate great from good!!

No, his over use of Doosra made him ineffective just when he got banned. His last few series was the T20 WC & then he had a major failure in SRL (2 Test Series). Had he been allowed to play the WC, he would have gone through his biggest nightmares, bigger than Yasir.

Spinners have to turn it & MUST have a conventional stock ball, on which he has full control. Otherwise, batsmen won't take any risk rather they will wait for his lose one And he'll not be able to put any pressure on them - this is T20, hence batsmen are forced to go after; PAK domestic FC matches are a bit extended version of 50 overs game, but had it been a 400 over FC match like other places, he would struggle to get much impact without a stock ball.

Tahir bowls for a team with outstanding fielding & very good pace attack; therefore he is more of a pressure bowler. Take yesterday's match - their pacers didn't give him early wickets & Guptil kept the asking in control, Tahir couldn't defend 280 on a spinning track.

Shadab has to create his own wickets & he'll play many more matches on repetitively spin friendly wickets - his role has to be more attacking.

He was asked about over use of googly etc. He said that since its t20, so i have to mix it up. Lets see, how he bowls in odis, in case he gets selected.
 
This boy is an interesting talent. He has presence. Very interesting.

Him and Rumman Raees should be in the team for next T20s and ODIs (why not).

Rumman Raees has unbelievable cahoonas.

PSL is starting to produce players.

Will be very upset if he is not selected in WI series.
Shadab is a must because in lois nowadays you need spinners who have variations.. example Tahir, Naraine.

Shahdab has a brilliant googly. He should be the first one in our long term plans. Added bonus is he is really capable bat and excellent fielder too. PCB should groom him.
 
Early days, but a very good prospect who can cut it against the big boys.

What kind of a poor statement is that?

At 18, most healthy adults in Pakistan look like that. Their looks are different from an average 18 yr old BD or Indian guy. [MENTION=132715]Varun[/MENTION]

In Pak they are well built usually and healthy like him, so please don't compare with an 18 yr old BD kid. He's also from North/Islamabad, so that also explains his good development.

If you look go to EU/US, they look even older at 18 than Shadab.
