“I am setting my mind to win, whether I am lifting this weight at the Olympics or in an empty room during quarantine, I know I need to be perfect. I’m looking at it as practically as possible, I’m not taking any pressure,” Talha Talib explains at he left for Tokyo in the wee hours of July 21.

The history he is carrying is greater than the number of his age. He is the first weightlifter from Pakistan since 1976 to make the cut for the Olympics. That is 44 years, and 45 should we add the delay due to the Covid-19 pandemic in holding the 2020 Games, and Talha is not shy of the responsibility.

“I am leaving my family, but my father, my friends and my family are with me everywhere, in my thoughts and that empowers me. I know I couldn’t have made my way to the Olympics if it was not their hard work,” Talha told The Express Tribune. “I have trained hard and I will be peaking at the Games now. I am sure that I can win a medal. My snatch has improved to 148 and then the clean and jerk to 168kg, but I know I can lift more the Games. I’m feeling good about my chances.”

Talha has been a wonder kid throughout his journey to the Olympics as the youngster had to face multiple obstacles that would have broken any ordinary soul.

He first missed out on the Asian Junior Championship in Korea. Then the South Asian Games weightlifting event was stripped from the Olympic qualification event. And lastly, Talha had to miss on international competitions due to the lack of resources.

He won the gold medals at the 2020 International Solidarity Weightlifting Championship aggregating 304kg, and that was his last international event before the pandemic hit the world.

The Pakistan Olympic Association had announced in June that the Commonwealth Games bronze-medallist will be representing the country on an invitational place, which is often given to the athletes who have shown improvement in their category and have been deserving of a chance.

“Accepting the request of NOC Pakistan, the International Olympic Committee has confirmed that the Olympic Games Tripartite Commission has finalised the Invitation Places in collaboration with International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) and Talha Talib has succeeded to secure the Invitation place in -67kg in Weightlifting for Tokyo 2020,” announced a press release.

Overcoming the odds

The training Talha did at his home town in Gujranwala was nothing short of labour of love and miracle. He was training at the vicinity of a local school where he, and his friends and family made a make-shift gym. He said he spent at least six hours in training each day, without taking much rest.

The result of his training showed greatly with his comeback at the international stage in April as he lifted 315kg, also taking the bronze medal for the best snitch of 148kg in Tashkent, Uzbekistan at the Asian Championship.

Talha, even after taking the medal, felt he should have won the championship more convincingly. He returned home but also found a notice from the local school that he needs to vacate the premises after July, as the school was going into loss financially and was struggling to keep afloat.

Talha has been preparing for the Olympics without standard equipment too, but he is not giving up on his dream of an Olympic medal. Even if it meant that he had to leave his mother a little upset.

“Of course my family understands it, they motivate me also. My mother was a little upset because she was missing me on Eid, but that is a sacrifice we can make, because it is a shared dream. I trained at home mostly, because my father was coaching me too. The drastic change of travelling to Islamabad would have disturbed my routine, so I chose to train here. I am ready to take this challenge head on, without much pressure, but with responsibility,” said Talha, adding that the Government of Punjab has promised a better facility for him to train after he returns from Tokyo.

Talha being a man of faith made his training according to his prayers, waking up for the late night prayers (Tahajjud), praying and then training till the morning prayers (Fajr) and so on.

He reveals that his intentions are to make the country proud and break the bad streak for Pakistan at the Olympics, as the country has not won any metal since 1992 Barcelona Games.

Talha saw the toughest competition from the Chinese weightlifters at the Asian Championships, but he sees the four-time world champion Chen Lijun as his hero too.

“I see Lijun and he seems to be a very inspiring athlete to me. He is definitely one of my heroes. He is very good on social media too, giving tips, being a thorough champion. I really respect him and feel great to be competing with him,” said Talha as he will be making his Olympic debut.

Talha’s event will be on July 25 in Group A of the 67kg event.

An impressive 5th place considering lack of proper facilities.

I'm sure if he his father was an influential person within the sport, or if his family had connections in the sport, or if his family were wealthy, then he certainly would have had all the backing and support he needed.

In Pakistan these days, it's not about how good you are, but who your family knows.

His father wasnt sent who is the coach because the PWF federation president went over as part of the pakistan olympic staff.

What an insult.

Yeah absolutely! I hope he gets some proper support now aswell.

Pak should put some money into these strength based competitions. I may be naive to the specifics but they don't seem to be the most demanding in terms of infrastructure requirements and could be decent medal opportunities for a country with lacklasture sporting infrastructure.

He didnt have his own support staff. He had the palestinian support staff accopany him and putting ice on him.

He was leading in snatch and lost only due to clean and jerk part. The margin for error is so less in these events so definitely needs some high tech training to gain those 3 or 4 extra kg lifts

to be good at it, its not that financially demanding, esepcially for a city like gujranwala that has a tradition of wrestling and stone throwing, but at olympic level you are competing against the best and the final 1 or 2% costs exponentially more than the first 98.

you need dieticians, technical coaches, conditioning coaches, physiotherapists. and the cost to maintain one olympic level athlete properly starts become unjustifiable for a country like pak.

however if you can build the actual infrastructure, then a system like that could support maybe 10 Olympic level athletes, where it becomes a lot better value, then if u have a decent stable of athletes u can monetise the domestic competitions and earn some money to cover the costs too.

What exactly is the Pakistan Olympic association doing if this guy is self funding his training and the Palestinians of all people are acting as his support staff ?

Also, Saj - is there anyway we can start a crowdfunding or sponsorship campaign for Talha and similar athletes in areas like weightlifting / wrestling where there is a decent chance of Pakistan winning medals ?

Wonder if he will be remembered in 3 years from now in Pakistan?

When you have random old army men serving as heads of your sports committees, don’t expect any improvement.

We hear this type of story every year but nothing ever changes lol. It's like we as a nation are in love with feeling sorry for ourselves yet we have no resolve to change.

The state of sports in a nation and the payout associated with the sports reflects the state of the economy of a nation. A broke nation cannot spend whatever money, resources it has to spend on everything, spending is allocated to high priority things.

Look at all the people now suddenly wanting to help him.

Where were they before the Olympics?

Yes, such as the former rulers buying properties abroad for themselves and their families.

This usually happens but i wont blame the people.

The govt is at fault here. When i see different govt officials confratulate and talk about how he has achieved with limited resource it makes me angry that govt officials are saying such things. These people should had made sure that olympians were being provided with what they need.

The govt is responsible for the following:

1. They are responsible to provide proper training equipment and facilities to the atheles. It is being reported when these atheletes qualified the govt did not provide them additional training.

Originally, pakistan had 11 atheletes and 1 horse going to the olympics. One athelete could not go because his horse died and with a new horse he had to requalify. The new horse also died and the govt did not bother to get a back up horse as they told thw athelete he would.probably not need one.

2. I really felt bad as a Pakistani, that our athelete in the olympics does not have his coach and the palestine coach/staff was assissting our athelete.
Is this how bad our country is? That we need to ask other people to help assist us? Apprently, talha's father was his coach but he couldnt go to the olympics because the President of Pakistan weight lifting federation wanted to go so he literally stole that seat.

Atleast, that corrupt president should had acted as a staff member for Talha. I can bet my top dollar that that president probably walked in the rally at rhe opening ceremony because he would probably get to be on tv.

Reminds me how shanwaz dhawan missed a t20 spot because a psl official used that one seat left for his own vacation on the expense of pcb.

3. The govt needs to fund in digital marketing and state sports channel.

Most of our atheletes psrticipate in international events. In track and field we have got atheletes that have won more than 50 international medals, we dont know about them because we don't get to se them on tv or get to hear about them.

Govt need to promote through social media marketing about our atheletes featuring on international stages. They could literally have the nation united with sports.

Ptv sports should be broadcasting games like commonwealth and south asian games.

4. Federations need to work on their marketing aswell.

If there is proper msrketing of these atheletes, only than would common people and companies will know about them and decide to sponsor them.

Sadly, the govt will learn nothing. Currently, we have 2 winter olympic atheletes who have already qualified for the 2022 winter olympics. Yet no one knows about them. They dont get the limelight that they deserve.

Spending is there. If there was no spending we would had not have these federations. Every federation is involved in misising funds.

I remember as a clubc cricketer we were required to go to the stadium of rawalpindi when scrutinity of players was taking place. However, it was the duty of the scrutiny officiers for them to go every club to scrutinize players, not call them to a stadium just for their sake. They were being paid good money for this task.

If state media gave the proper limelight to these players companies would themselves sponsor them

LAHORE: Pakistani weightlifter Talha Talib returned to Pakistan from Japan Friday morning after competing in the Tokyo Olympics.

The office-bearers of the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation, players and a large number of fans were present at the occasion to give him a hero's welcome at the airport.

The 21-year-old weightlifter finished fifth in the 67kg category with an impressive performance of overall lifting of 320 KG weight and won laurels from the countrymen.

In the clean and jerk third attempt, Talha Talib lifted 170 kg, which is more than twice his bodyweight.

"I thank Allah and the nation for the prayers," the star weightlifter said while talking to media at the airport.

"I am grateful to the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation and the Olympic Association. I attribute my success to the nation. I am happy that the Pakistani flag soared higher."

Talha also reiterated his resolve to surmount all mistakes and bring a gold medal next time if the government provide proper support.

The weightlifter said he is looking forward to making his mark in the Commonwealth Games and then the World Championship scheduled in October.

Talha missed bronze by a slight margin of two kilograms but he won the hearts of Pakistanis around the world for putting up a solid show in the Olympics.

Can't produce Olympic stars without the required facilities. The lad did the best he could on a miniscule budget and little support. The talent is there but the support and money isn't. Until this changes it would be better if we don't even send a team to the Olympics or Commonwealth games for that matter.

Wonder if he will be remembered in 3 years from now in Pakistan?
He's only 21 so we're gonna be hearing his name for many years

I read somewhere that the POC had a budget of PKR 400 million for these Olympics, most of which came as grants from the IOC. It may not be much in the grand scheme of things but this guy could've gotten better support.

LAHORE: Unconfirmed reports on Friday said Olympian Talha Talib was among two Pakistani weightlifters who returned positive samples in dope tests conducted by the International Testing Agency (ITA).

The Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) told Dawn they had no confirmed information about the development, while the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWF) did not answer any queries.

According to the reports, four Pakistani weightlifters were tested for samples by the ITA in coordination with the International Weight*lifting Federation recently.

Talha was training at his gym in Gujranwala when ITA officials paid a surprised visit to collect his samples while the other lifters were tested in Lahore.

When contacted by Dawn POA general secretary Khalid Mahmood and PSB director general Asif Zaman said they had received no official information regarding the tests.

Khalid said the ITA would send the confirmation of the test results to the IWF and PWF directly.

“It is the athletes’ prime duty to be careful and avoid the usage of banned substances,” said Asif.

“The coaches and federations also have a responsibility in this regard.

“The PSB is seriously considering to conduct surprise dope tests of athletes who are currently attending training camps to participate in the upcoming Commonwealth Games.”

Talha, narrowly missed out winning a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year, made it to the Games after securing an invitational spot offered by the Tripartite Commission.

Later, in the World Weightlifting Champ*ionship in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, Talha finished third on the podium.

His spectacular rise to the very top level of the sport may well have urged the ITA to run a test on the 22-year-old.

LAHORE: Pakistan's weightlifter Talha Talib called his positive dope test result an "unintentional mistake" in a letter to the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation (PWF), The News reported Tuesday.

Surprise dope tests were conducted by the International Testing Agency along with International Weightlifting Federation in Gujranwala and Lahore for all Pakistani weightlifters.

After failing a dope test recently, Talha wrote a letter, stating that he did it unknowingly.

Test reports revealed signs of prohibited medicines in samples of three weightlifters, including Talha, which could lead to a ban of four years. He was suspended on March 14.

In his letter to PWF, Talha said that “he had no idea about the presence of prohibited substances in his body” while also stating that he would “never even think about violating doping rules”.

However, the 22-year-old also said that “he could have made an unintentional mistake, which could be due to lack of knowledge, and for that he is sorry”. Talha — whose previous nine dope tests all came back negative — has also decided against submitting B-sample as he trusts the laboratory results.

It must be noted that Talha won the first-ever medal for Pakistan in the World Weightlifting Championship, bagging bronze at Tashkent last year. He narrowly missed out on winning an Olympic medal for Pakistan at 2020 Tokyo Olympics. “I have always kept my focus on training and making my country proud through lawful means,” Talha stated.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s weightlifter Talha Talib, who represented the country in the Tokyo Olympics has been ruled out of the upcoming Commonwealth Games following his doping violation.

Talha, who is already suspended in the doping case, will not be able to travel to Birmingham to participate in the global event.

Talha, who came in fifth place in weightlifting at the Tokyo Olympics, failed a drug test, conducted in April this year.

The weightlifter’s blood samples were found to contain illicit drug samples, according to the reports. Talha, on the other hand, had turned down the allegations, claiming he never used any forbidden drug.

Supplements are a science, and athletes need guidance as to what can be taken within the rules.

Easy for us to say, the bosses above have to be prudent with the little money available. As I type this, just this month two new Domino's branches have opened in the US.

He is all set to return to national duty after serving a three-year ban due to doping.
