According to police, the deceased, an avid fan of Rohit Sharma and Mumbai Indians team, compared the Royal Challengers Bangalore team to Dharmaraj, who was a stammerer.

A 21-year-old man in Tamil Nadu was arrested Thursday for allegedly killing his friend following a drunken brawl over who was a better cricketer – Rohit Sharma or Virat Kohli, police said.
He was later remanded in judicial custody.

The deceased identified as P Vignesh, 24, and the accused S Dharmaraj, both avid cricket fans, hail from Poyyur village in Ariyalur district. Vignesh, who had completed ITI, was awaiting a job visa to fly to Singapore, police said.

According to the Keelapalur police, Vignesh, a Rohit Sharma fan, and Dharmaraj, a Virat Kohli supporter, were apparently discussing cricket in an open area near SIDCO Industrial Estate, near Mallur, on Tuesday night.

“Both had consumed liquor. As per the initial investigation, Vignesh was supporting Mumbai Indians in Indian Premier League (IPL) while Dharmaraj was a Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) supporter,” police said.

“During the course of their debate, Vignesh had allegedly mocked RCB and Virat Kohli. Vignesh had the habit of body shaming Dharmaraj, who was a stammerer.

“On that day he had made some remarks comparing the RCB team to the speaking difficulty of Dharmaraj. This infuriated Dharmaraj who attacked Vignesh with a bottle and later hit him with a cricket bat on the head. Dharmaraj soon fled the spot,” officials said.

Vignesh’s body was spotted the next morning by a group of workers who were on their way to the SIDCO factory, and they alerted the local police.

The police sent Vignesh’s body to the government hospital in Ariyalur for autopsy. A case has been registered.

Mindboggling really.

Some fans truly get too obsessed.

Getting drunk won't have helped. A&E departments in the UK are usually over-stretched on a weekend in the UK when alcohol blurs drinkers usual inhibitions, and also makes them too emotional.

The obsession with celebs or sports stars around the world is very strange.

Nobody I know will resort to murder or my murder but I recall on many occasions when I tell a friend I dont like his/her music or films etc, a few get personally offended.

These people dont even know you exist, watch them entertain you but dont care for them let alone love them so much, you are willing to murder you real friend in real life.

It’s an absurd world.

Not gonna say anything bad about Kohli infront of Indians from now on.

celeb worship seems to be crazy intense in india, whether cricketers or actors, a big minority treat them like gods.

Yes there are those who actually worship Sachin and also Trump. Very strange indeed. How can anyone think these people can be Gods?

That's actually comes from Hindu philosophy. I don't know whether you have heard of Rabindranath Tagore, he is the greatest poet of modern India and possibly the greatest philosopher as well. According to me the greatest two lines he had ever written was "Debatare Mora Priya kori, priya re debata". Which means we make our God our beloved and our beloved our God. I know for a follower of Abrahamic religion this concept seems strange. But in Hinduism many times forget being all- powerful, God is dependent on his devotee.

I think that is probably a wrong interpretation. How could an all powerful God be dependent? It's a contradiction in terms.

Why does a god need a devotee to pray? I can understand God demanding people to follow a righteous path for heavenly benefits but why the prayer? Aren't good deeds enough? The god devotee relation seems to be a mutual one. One needs another.

As I said, the concept is very hard to describe to the followers of Abrahamic religions. But the main thing about Hinduism is if you worship God because he can reward you the most you can desire is heaven. According to Hinduism heaven is just the opposite face of hell, and just like Earth it's an illusion. The ultimate target of Hinduism is liberation which means you live outside heaven , hell and earth in a state of internal bliss. You need nishkama bhakti or nishkama karma or nishkama gyan to achieve liberation. . That means you have to love God, or do your duty or achieve wisdom without the attraction of reward. Let me give you an example. My mon worships Balgopal, which means the child stage of lord Krishna. The style of worship is basically how you took care of your own little baby who is totally dependent on you. So my mom has made a small mosquito net so that mosqitoes don't bite Balgopal at night. She gives him Chocolates and cakes because that's what children likes. And to top it all she some times slaps him m because she thinks she is being disobedient. That's one of the style of worship in Hinduism.

What is the definition of God in Hinduism?

To keep within the topic, do some Hindus see famous people as God?

Sounds like India should be the place to be. It doesn't look that great from the view of a born and bred Britisher if I may say so.

Fanatics are Fanatics. Be it sports, cult figures or politics. They all cannot take criticism of their favorite person.

I don’t think you or for the matter of fact me have the depth and sensitivity or the patience to discuss such sensitive subjects. However on topic there are plenty of cases even in the west where some crazy fan shot their own idol out of obsession leave alone another person. It’s a terrible act of crime, probably mental health etc etc. that’s what this horrible incident is. Not every thing has to stand for Indians Hindus, Muslims, Pakistan etc.

In Mumbai we call this having a “keeda” . So let’s keep the keeda aside and try discussing the topic if we feel there is some productive contribution.

I dont think you have the knowledge to reply to my post but thanks.

On topic. India seems to have a mentality of celeb worship , this is dangerous but not sure if linked to religion.

Celeb worship is everywhere. Look how the Kardashians minted billions out of Karens in the west. The entire TMZ ecosystem is based on celeb worship.

As far as your original question goes, Hinduism is very vast as there is no one particular founder. It has evolved over centuries and God is the creator, preserver and destroyer in many forms.

It is common everywhere but I dont know of a place where they are actually worshiped as God.

Sure but my question is what is the definition of God.

Lots of promises and talk without an ounce of evidence.

There are short tempered people every where and they are the ones that always get into fights and abuse others. Some among them take it to the extreme. Anger management is an unknown entity in India.

No comparison here. Making money is very different to worship and willingness to murder in name of fandom

The sample size in India is too small to think otherwise. I've seen English hooligans and Russian thugs hurt others during football games. 100+ people died in Indonesia during a football game recently. It's all passion for a team or a celeb. And when alcohol is involved, it goes over the line. Even in this case, both were drunk and the guy hit another dude with a bat. The victim died of his injuries. Was it an attempt to murder? We don't know

Celeb worship is everywhere but speaking as a westerner there seems to be a lack of Indian male equivalents of the Kardashians. I wonder what happened there? They are based in the USA for probably a lot longer?
