New Delhi: The keenly-watched debate over the no-confidence motion against the Narendra Modi government has kicked off in the Lok Sabha. The debate that will last for close to 7 hours was kicked off by Jayadev Galla o Telugu Desam Party (TDP) that moved the no-trust motion. The government will face the no-trus vote in parliament in the evening, after the marathon debate. Moments after the session began, Naveen Patnaik's Biju Janata Dal walked out of the hall, bringing down the effective house strength to 514. PM Modi met BJP chief Amit Shah and ministers Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj, Nitin Gadkari and Ananth Kumar shortly before the debate began. The government, its allies and the opposition parties will put forward their view of the performance of the Narendra Modi government. While the opposition will target the government over what it terms as "failures", the government will not only defend its case, but also inform the country of its "achievements" in the last four years. The BJP's oldest ally, the Shiv Sena, has decided to stay away from the no-trust vote and its lawmakers are not attending the debate. The Congress, which does not have the numbers to upstage the BJP, has said that the no-trust motion in the parliament monsoon session is "much more than a show of numbers. This morning, PM Modi tweeted calling for a "constructive, disruption-free" debate. "India will be watching us closely," he said.Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be watched carefully as his speech today is widely seen as a launch pad for his campaign for the 2019 general elections.

The BJP has 272 seats - the exact number needed for majority. If everybody else votes against and even if a single BJP MP abstains or votes against in a worst case scenario, the government will fall later this evening. A patchy coalition will be hastily stitched up and Rahul Gandhi will end up becoming PM overnight.

Pakistan can then follow this up by having Bilawal Bhutto becoming PM later in the week. :batman:

A little bit of calculation mistake.

At present the strength of LS is 534 due to vacant seats. So the majority mark is 268. BJP has 273 members. So they have majority. Adding to that NDA members will take the number past 300.

Who even is in the NDA at the moment? The Shiv Sena is out, the TDP is out and floated this no confidence motion in the first place. Apart from the handful of seats from the LJP and SAD, it's basically just the BJP and a couple of hangers-on.

SS, they talk a lot yet will not end the Maharashtra alliance.

And a very odd speech by the Pappu himself. Shows the disconnect with Congress leaders as they can't even communicate their points to common man.

I wonder if this is just some kind of manufactured drama?

TDP get to tell their supporters “look we tried our best to bring down the government and fight for our state” whereas the government will win the vote easily (perhaps even with a 2/3rds majority) so can say “look how strong we are”.

And then eventually the BJP and TDP will get back together for 2019.

Meanwhile, as usual Congress are left looking like idiots.

That doesn't take much doing, why go through all this trouble. First in 15 years and all that.

Shiv sena is not out. It has 3 ministers in NDA govt.

JDU

NEDA

Are all NDA members.

Because they dont have issues. Or they are so inept themselves that they know if tgey raise the issues it will revert back on them.

Again, Rahul has shown he is just a robot, and needs a scripted arena each time. There is nothing natural about him. You can be a good or bad person, but at least you need do it naturally. He is just a actor, who has no ideas nor mind of his own.

The idea was to derail parliament this entire session with this demand. But they were caught out when when BJP agreed.

The government are winning this easy:

Anyone watching Modi’s speech in response to Rahul Gandhi? What a great leader and orator he is.

Today just proves above any other day that the opposition is at best, a haphazard bunch of sloths with very little drive and ambition to come to power in 2019, leave alone do the heavy lifting of managing the country after that.

Motion rejected. 325 to 126. Wow. That’s even more than the NDA tally.

It's almost as if you were hoping for Modi ji to go home :afridi

Great orator for sure, but was clutching at straws and doing whataboutery as usual. Couldn't answer any question satisfactorily bar Rafael one.
