Despite of the unfavourable results over the last few years Mickey Arthur has been doing a fantastic job getting rid of the dead weights in the team and the future has suddenly started looking a little brighter. The team is still carrying two dead weights in Hafeez and Azhar Ali, if Sharjeel comes back in 6 - 12 months that will spell doom for Azhars Odi chances and on merit Hafeez should been shown the door after failing in tonights match or against England if Pakistan reaches the semi finals.
Looking forward to the next World Cup here's a look at the potential team moving forward along with the bench strength:
Pakistans opening is easily the weakest facet of the team, Fakhan Zaman has had a promising start to his career and with Sharjeel likely to come back soon, it creates an explosive opening partnership. However, if Sharjeel doesn't come back and Fakhar, like many players from Pakistan fails to elevate his game, team Pakistan would be struggling for many more years with players like Shahzad, Khuram Manzoor, Azhar Ali, Hafeez potentially eyeing the opening slot for many more years.
Babar Azam would/should be #3 for atleast the next decade.
The middle order slots #4#5#6 can see a lot of competition in the near future with Malik and Sarfaraz locked in their positions till the next WC atleast. There are players like Talat, Amin, Sohail, Rizwan eyeing for Hafeez's #4 spot.
Exciting times for the alrounder position with Imad, Shadab, Yamin, Faheem, Azam fighting out for two positions in the near future. Not sure what Mickey sees in him but he seems to be a huge fan of Imad, Shadab IMO is twice the bowler, twice the fielder and maybe a slightly inferior batsman.
Ample of Fast Bowling options for Pakistan with Amir, Hasan likely to play for Pakistan if the remain injury free for atleast the next decade. Junaid is mostly hot and cold and has had some injury problems. Raees and Shinwari have looked very promising in PSL and bowlers like Abbas, Amad Butt, Rahat can always be tried out.
Team Pakistan moving forward could be looking like a very formidable, fit and young unit with potentially this team being played in the next WC:
Fakhar
Sharjeel
Babar
Sohail/Amin
Sarfaraz
Malik
Ashraf/Yamin
Shadab/Imad
Amir
Hasan
Junaid
The night is darkest before the dawn and all signs point to exciting times ahead.
