This level of abuse and disinformation must be challenged and ideally Indians should police it themselves. It is cheapening the conversation around cricket, make up fake news and when it gets abusive is putting the physical and mental health of players at risk.

The focus has shifted from "Dead internet theory" (which means that most content/traffic on internet is bot/artificially generated), to "Indian internet theory" (which means that most English content is generated by indians due to their massive population and ability to use internet).

The fact that China is behind a massive digital firewall and has relatively weak connectivity outside of their region & EU has their own regional languages adds credence to this theory. The massive diaspora in all English speaking countries over a longer duration of time also means that there's no place that's out of scope of this internet demography.

Some tangible things that can be immediately implemented.

1. Stop giving platform to fake accounts. The amount of times I've seen on PP fake accounts like Richard Kettlebourough and even a fake Pat Cummins shared by seemingly educated Indians is worrying. I follow the fake news sites.

2. Call out those that abuse players. If any Indian threatens to rape a player then others should challenge him directly. Unfortunately the silence enables them more and more.

Players and fans should be free to engage in discussions without threats or fake news or national grudges taking over. Even on PP every match thread we have to wade through many unnecessary posts about Bangladesh.

This great game deserves more and we can all act together ( including the sensible minority of Indians) to protect it from uncouth Indians.

All I am saying is, fake news on twitter exists from every country. So dont like the attempt to single out Indians only. How about fake AI videos circulated in Pak main stream media? Why are you not talking about them and how to fix that? Everyone knows X is full of anonymous crap. That is not only restricted to India but every nationality. How many fake news peddlers from Pakistani accounts you want?

However, when mainstream media peddles AI generated fake videos, that is more concerning.

There is a complaints platform for mainstream media. They can get it wrong. If Pakistani media was sucked in by fake videos originating from India then it's regrettable and they should apologise.

There is a reason I have mentioned tech platform. If we wanted to debate media channels there is plenty of examples from India too.

Howrver the anonymous nature of tech platforms and the difficulty countering fake narratives/ massive abuse that can quickly gather pace is a different issue to a channel making a blinder.

Twitter has become pretty useless after Elon made tweets monetizable.

You can make money by getting a high engagement on tweets and given that Indians are the biggest userbase on there outside the US, engaging with them earns you the most .. whether it's hating on them or sucking up to them. It goes both ways.
