1) Sarfaraz leads Pakistan to a second World Cup win, with Amir and Babar the best players.

2) Kohli bombs during the tournament, capping it off with a choke in a must-win game for India. Dhoni goes through a similarly awful run of form with bat and gloves.

3) Amla and de Villiers lead South Africa to their first ever WC win, each scoring a century in the final match against arch-rivals, Australia.

4) Kohli scores a match-winning ton in the WC final and wins India the trophy.

5) Afghanistan or Zimbabwe win the WC, with Bangladesh making the finals. This leads to the latter half of the tournament becoming a ratings disaster.

6) Pakistan loses every single one of their matches but Babar Azam scores four tons in the process.

7) Australia wins another WC by steamrolling the competition, with Steve Smith averaging over a 100 with the bat.

8) England score 400+ in every single match, including the first ever 500+ ODI score, by playing this lineup: (Bairstow, Roy, Hales, Root, Morgan, Stokes, Buttler, Ali, Willey, Rashid and Curran).

9) West Indies or New Zealand win the tournament.

10) Ben Stokes gets into a brawl two days before the start of the tournament. :kp

What do you guys think would be the fall-out if the above events took place. Each of them is a stand-alone event but you're welcome to combine them and/or give your own 'What if' scenarios.

1) Amazing, free biryani to all... we need the batsmen to click in a major way for it happen, bowling alone won't do it for us.

2) Kohli will live to fight another day, but dhoni will see his end by the indian crowd/team.

3) You almost have me choking.... it will be marvelous for SA's.

4) Kohli will further stamp his legacy as a great bat.

5) You may not get many people in the stadium (still would be 75% full stadium or more) but it will still be watch by just as many folks. If it is Zim vs Afg as a final, then still there would be interest. But if its either of them vs say ind or aus etc then everyone who is neutral would want them to win, ala SL vs Aus 96.

6) Hopefully against the top teams.... and his tons would depend on the context of the games...

7) Good for smith, but boring...

8) They will still find ways to lose... me thinks...

9) for WI it would be vital as they had to qualify to get in.... and for NZ it will be great as the sport can mainstream there...

10) Ben Stokes would post a selfie, hopefully... it shouldn't affect ENG much, but would be a loss...

We all know if Pakistan win it's going to be a fluke and Kohli and Dhoni are better players than Imran and Wasim.

Ditto on the free biryani. All of Pakpassion is invited to my place.

1) When Pakistan lift the trophy the likes of Mamoon will not have any wrists left to slit.

It will also be the most poor and embarrassing WC campaign in the history of WC :))

Lots of respect and no hate to Australia but 7th would be the worst.

Lol. The 2011 WC was much more memorable than the 2015 edition even for non-Indians because the winner was someone other than Australia.

I actually did not even realize that they had won it six times. Thought 2015 was their fifth.

Simply Australia will be dominant in the whole tournament & will lift the trophy.

I will be very happy if number 9 happens. New Zealand lifting the trophy would be great. West Indies lifting the trophy will probably revive cricket in the Caribbean. Both will be fantastic overall for cricket in general.

They have won it 5 times.

1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, and 2015

It was their fifth one.

1) Sarfaraz leads Pakistan to a second World Cup win, with Amir and Babar the best players.
Some of the posters here would consider it to be the greatest fluke ever in the history of the game and possibly a disaster for the game of cricket.

2) Kohli bombs during the tournament, capping it off with a choke in a must-win game for India. Dhoni goes through a similarly awful run of form with bat and gloves.
Threads will be created about how Kohli is a flat track bully and a choker when the going gets tough.

3) Amla and de Villiers lead South Africa to their first ever WC win, each scoring a century in the final match against arch-rivals, Australia.
Many will be particularly happy for AB as he deserves a World Cup for the efforts he has put in for his country.

4) Kohli scores a match-winning ton in the WC final and wins India the trophy.
Threads will still be created but this time trying to undermine Kohli's century especially if it involves a drop catch.

5) Afghanistan or Zimbabwe win the WC, with Bangladesh making the finals. This leads to the latter half of the tournament becoming a ratings disaster.
Not going to happen so lets leave this.

6) Pakistan loses every single one of their matches but Babar Azam scores four tons in the process.
It would be a field day for Pakistani team haters on this forum. And if Pakistan ultimately loses every match but Babar scores 4 tons it would probably mean that all the debate about Babar being selfish would be true.

7) Australia wins another WC by steamrolling the competition, with Steve Smith averaging over a 100 with the bat.
Steve Smith would cement his legacy as one of the greatest batsmen to have played this game.

8) England score 400+ in every single match, including the first ever 500+ ODI score, by playing this lineup: (Bairstow, Roy, Hales, Root, Morgan, Stokes, Buttler, Ali, Willey, Rashid and Curran).
Not happening so lets leave it.

9) West Indies or New Zealand win the tournament.
Wouldn't be a massive shock around the world if WI wins because they are clutch in decisive moments and along with Pakistan are generally a tournament team. NZ winning would be shocking and probably articles will be written about NZ's sporting legacy of how a nation of just 5mn people are world champions in 2 sports.

10) Ben Stokes gets into a brawl two days before the start of the tournament. :kp
It would probably be the end of his career ala Symonds.

What do you guys think would be the fall-out if the above events took place. Each of them is a stand-alone event but you're welcome to combine them and/or give your own 'What if' scenarios.

There you go.

1) Sarfaraz leads Pakistan to a second World Cup win, with Amir and Babar the best players.

He will surpass Imran as Pakistan's greatest captain, and Amir and Babar will become national greats as well. Pakistan is going through one of its worst periods in history, and a captain winning two world events in the space of two years will elevate him to a status that no former captain has reached.

It will also show that this generation of players have the ability to raise their game under pressure, and that the Champions Trophy was not a fluke but a sign of things to come.

Chances of it happening 0.5/10

2) Kohli bombs during the tournament, capping it off with a choke in a must-win game for India. Dhoni goes through a similarly awful run of form with bat and gloves.

Kohli will dent his legacy as an ODI player, and he will have to make amends in the 2023 World Cup. Not much would happen to Dhoni's legacy though - he is on his last legs, and no one expects him to make an impact in the World Cup. He will retire after the tournament and people will remember him for the great things that he achieved for India, and not what he did in his declining years.

The chances of Kohli flopping in the next World Cup 3/10

The chances of Dhoni having a poor tournament before retiring 7/10

3) Amla and de Villiers lead South Africa to their first ever WC win, each scoring a century in the final match against arch-rivals, Australia.

Amla will redeem himself. He will no longer be considered as the greatest ODI choker in history. On the other hand, de Villiers will surpass Ponting, Bevan, Dhoni, Kohli and Viv to become the greatest ODI batsman in history. Moreover, it will be the proudest day in history of South African cricket and a dream send-off for players like de Villiers, Amla, du Plessis, Morkel etc.

Chances of it happening are 0/10 though.

4) Kohli scores a match-winning ton in the WC final and wins India the trophy.

He will cement his legacy as the greatest ODI batsman to ever live. At this point, he is one iconic World Cup innings away - a career-defining innings.

India along with England are favorites for the World Cup in my view, and Kohli is by far the best ODI batsman in the world today who is at the peak of his powers.

The chances of this happening are quite high. I would say 7.5/10

5) Afghanistan or Zimbabwe win the WC, with Bangladesh making the finals. This leads to the latter half of the tournament becoming a ratings disaster.

Afghanistan/Zimbabwe winning the World Cup would be the greatest fluke in ODI history, and incomparable to the three other major flukes - 1983 World Cup, 2004 Champions Trophy and 2017 Champions Trophy.

However, it will be massive for the two nations and would give the game a huge boost in those countries.

Bangladesh though have the potential to make the finals, provided that they can find a couple of quality bowlers. Their batting is already very good and well above teams like Sri Lanka and Pakistan. If they can improve their bowling, they can solidify themselves as the #2 Asian team in the future.

6) Pakistan loses every single one of their matches but Babar Azam scores four tons in the process.

Sarfraz will be stripped of captaincy and will probably lose his slot in the ODI team as well. Babar will become the captain. People will sympathize with him and he will be considered as the lone warrior of Pakistan.

The 2019 World Cup will have a 1992 World Cup-like format. All 10 teams will play each other, and considered Pakistan is inferior to England, India, Australia, South Africa and New Zealand, it can easily lose 5 games. The likes of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh can also beat Pakistan on a good day, and we have been upset by minnows before.

However, losing 9 games in a row is pretty much impossible. The chances are 0.1/10.

Babar might score a ton or two, but four hundreds are beyond his capabilities. 1/10

7) Australia wins another WC by steamrolling the competition, with Steve Smith averaging over a 100 with the bat.

Not much would have happen to Australia's ODI legacy. They are already the greatest ODI team historically and the kings of World Cups. However, Smith will solidify himself as an ODI legend and will probably surpass Ponting. Moreover, he could even surpass Kohli and de Villiers as the best ODI batsman of this generation, provided that the former two flop.

Australia are third favorites after England and India, so I would give them a 7/10 chance. If Australia wins, Smith will obviously end up playing a big role, so he gets a 7/10 as well.

8) England score 400+ in every single match, including the first ever 500+ ODI score, by playing this lineup: (Bairstow, Roy, Hales, Root, Morgan, Stokes, Buttler, Ali, Willey, Rashid and Curran).

England are the most powerful batting side at the moment, and they will probably have the highest average score in the World Cup. In addition, they have the capability to breach the 500 mark. However, scoring 400+ in every single game is impossible.

0/10.

9) West Indies or New Zealand win the tournament.

It could revive Caribbean cricket and Holder will become a legend. A World Cup win could motivate WICB to get their act right and the people will probably end up in love with the game again.

New Zealand would finally join the "Big Boys Club" after being in the shadow of the other top teams throughout their history. Williamson will become their greatest ever player surpassing Hadlee and Crowe. Quite a few of their current top players apart from Williamson, i.e. Taylor, Guptill, Boult etc. will cement their legacies as legends of the game.

However, West Indies have no chance of winning the World Cup. 0/10.

New Zealand are my fourth favorites after England, India and Australia, so I would give them a 4/10 chance.

10) Ben Stokes gets into a brawl two days before the start of the tournament.

His England career will end and he will become a journeyman T20 cricketer. He has anger management issues so he will continue to fight himself in hot water every now and then, but I do not think he is stupid enough to cross the line again in the future.

2/10.

A very good, creative effort Bilal7. Hopefully you will not forget to bump it during the World Cup. This thread has immense bump potential.

Afg aint even getting to the tournament so yeah, that is kinda impossible.

Amla and AB are too far gone, they couldnt win tournaments in their primes in 2011 and 2015, no chance now.

One thing I can gurantee is that England will choke 100%

Last 4 world cups you knew the winner before the 1st ball was balled.

The next one is not so clear cut Aus Ind or Pak rest are there just to make up the numbers..

Pak will take the revenge for all the WC losses against India by beating them in the semis. AUS will win against England in the other semi.

What sort of logic is this? By winning WC, ABD and Smith become the GOATs? Yuvraj led India to the inaugral wt20 victory. He is not even India's best T20 player let alone world's. Similarly, KP isnt the GOAT t20 player or Jayasuria the greatest batter of all time.

None of the names you mentioned have the track record of AB or Smith.

Mamoon, these are not really predictions but rather 'what if' scenarios. As such, they do not reflect my predictions of the next World Cup. Those will come later.

if we are gonna make pigs fly.... how about we send them to the space....

11. Umer Akmal makes the wc squad, stays humble and behaved, shows up for games, outperforms everyone, and wins it for us in the final with a 100...

i mean jab patang ko uraana hi hai, toh thora aur peichaa de daitay hain.... :azhar2

That is because AB de Villiers averages 50+ at a SR of 100 in ODIs which is incredible. Yuvraj does not have anything comparable to those numbers and so, one superb tournament did not make him a legend in ODIs but one superb tournament can definitely make the likes of ABD, Kohli and Amla into ODI legends.

de Villiers is already an ODI ATG. He is among the top 10 ODI batsmen in history. If he can lead South Africa to a World Cup win by scoring a match-winning hundred in the final, it would certainly take him to the next level.

Similarly, Smith is a very good ODI player already. However, if he dominates another World Cup and Australia win again, he will certainly solidify himself as an ODI legend. Please note that I did not use the word "GOAT" for Smith - he will never be the GOAT ODI batsman, but he can become an ATG ODI batsman.

Smith already had a great world cup. ALl he needs is to pad up his numbers in some bilaterals and he will be an ATG.

1) Sarfaraz leads Pakistan to a second World Cup win, with Amir and Babar the best players.

2) Kohli bombs during the tournament, capping it off with a choke in a must-win game for India. Dhoni goes through a similarly awful run of form with bat and gloves.

Same can be said about yuvi, gambhir, symonds and 100 more players who had a good worldcup but were not so good in bilaterals.
Just for example yuvraj won a wc man of tournament but still he isn't considered an atg.Scoring in bilaterals is no easy feat.

AB is a top 5 ODI player in history of cricket.. He ranks alongside Viv, Kohli, SRT and Ponting.. If he helps SA win World Cup he has legit chance of becoming GOAT so does kohli if he helps India.
