Shoaib Malik at a presser before the Pakistan team's departure for the tour of Zimbabwe:

"Expectations are high during the tour of Zimbabwe, we are trying to be more consistent. We used to lack in that previously but we have improved in that aspect"

"Zimbabwe is a strong team in their home conditions while Australia are #2 in T20Is"

"I have stated on a few occasions that the 2019 World Cup is the last 50-over event of my career"

"I will try to keep playing T20s if I maintain fitness and form until 2020"

"If you have made goals for yourself, that helps you to keep going and that's what I've done. You get satisfaction when the team wins and we've won two world events, the World T20 and the Champions Trophy. The only thing left is the 50-over World Cup and that's the thing that I've been looking at and it makes me work hard. I have high hopes from myself and all these youngsters and insha'Allah we're going to give our best"

"Test cricket is something that you always play until you're fit enough but sometimes you have to take strong decisions. Mostly people decide whatever is best for themselves but I tried to keep Pakistan in front. Of course, I had to give my family time as well and prolong my career. I have no regrets about that decision. I think that the Test team and the combination is very good. If we back them and give them a proper chance, I think they'll become a very good and strong team in the next 1-2 years. After my retirement, there's a couple of youngsters who are performing on a consistent basis. So you can leave the format and still positively impact your country"

"Whenever the Pakistan team participates in a world tournament now, the fans and everyone hopes and has the belief that we can win this event. This is a very good sign, it's best if hopes are high and chances are bright, that shows that the team is on the right track. The youngsters in our team are very good"

"You learn in matches no matter how long you've been playing for. You'll even learn in a club match which is not likely to happen in training. I think that Pakistan team's improvement is mainly because the team is playing more and more matches"

"No human can become perfect but the aim of any player who performs, is to try and do so consistently. You don't become a star after 1-2 matches, you need to give consistent performances. There is a lot of self-awareness in the youngsters. There is a very good atmosphere in the group as the seniors help out the juniors and pass on the things they have learnt. No matter how many performances seniors put up, I don't think they should be in the team unless they help the juniors"

"If you give consistent chances to a player and select the right players then you can get good results. There is never a good coach and a bad coach, every coach has their plus points and weak points and those exist in cricketers and all human beings as well. The selection committee has seen the important of player confidence so they deserve a lot of credit"

"Any decision that is taken is according to what's best for the player and for the team. Fast-bowling is something that means you require rest as it's the most exerting part of cricket. It's the management's decision as to who is given a rest and who isn't. The main thing which is good is that there is communication and no gap"

"I have supported Brazil since the beginning, when they scored in injury time I was very happy. If they didn't score, I would have been depressed. I have twisted both ankles in the past while playing football so I am fond of it"

"I have learnt one thing in life - If you put pressure on someone and make them do something that they are not interested in, the results are not good. I pray that my child is healthy and it depends on him what he wants to become"

"This is not my domain but if you do ever receive any offer, then it's not to show the world, it's to report to the anti-corruption unit. If anything happened to me, I would have reported it straight away to the unit. My message to everyone is that if you see someone shady, you should report it. The cleaner you keep the sport, the better the message is that is broadcast to the fans and onlookers"

"Physical fitness is a thing that you need to figure out yourself, for the ultimate requirements for your body. There are other players besides me who play in all 3 formats. You can get injured at any time. I am blessed as my father was an athlete. I work hard as everyone does but I also try to ensure there is no gap. I also thank my father for being an athlete. I want to send a message here - A lot of people, specially kids spend a lot of time on mobile phones. That's fine, you can have your enjoyment but try to always keep some time out for training, it helps to remove frustrations and brings a lot of satisfaction"

"If you look at overall teams around the world, there's very few cricketers who perform at a high level consistently while not being very physically fit. 95% of all teams gives priority to physical fitness. If you look at the Indian team, they have star players who didn't pass the fitness test and weren't selected which shows the importance of fitness. When you're fit, your confidence level is very high"

"If we go back a few years, there were a lot of big stars in the team and there was a large gap (between them and the youngsters). Currently, we don't have stars in that manner but thanks to Allah, they are becoming stars"

"The performance that you give outside the country is not the same as the performance inside the country, the country appreciates more when we're playing in our own grounds and they turn up in large numbers, that's why PCB is also working hard on planning more matches here"

Top guy. Top player. Knows when its time to call it off; a rare breed in desi players.

So he knows that he ‘ll be selected for WC19?. I don’t think he can help us win the WC especially when its in UK.

Shukar hay..shouldn't have played for Pakistan this long in the first place. He should have been put out to pasture years ago..Will always have a legacy of being part of what i call the "plastic generation".

I love the fact that he has stated the 2019 World Cup will be his last 50 over event and then to say maintaining fitness and form until 2020. Cause that's what our team needs right now isn't it, a 37-38 year old Shoaib Malik lighting up stadiums against minnows and failing against the tough oppositions.

Hafeez: 2019 World Cup will be my last 50 overs tournament in England, want to play one more World Cup in Australia, in South Africa, at home in Pakistan and will then retire gracefully - will focus on Test and T20 cricket only after that.

Can anyone remember the last time Malik scored a century against Australia, England,
New Zealand, South Africa? He couldn't make a fifty against New Zealand in the last ODI
series.

How is he in the team is beyond me.

He shouldn't be a guarantee to go to the WC. He should be monitored on a series by series basis especially against the top teams. Performing against Zimbabwe and Scotland shouldn't be a reason for his inclusion.

Why would he think he derseves a place at the table. I am banking on the South Africa odi series to finish his and hafeez’s career

At least he has decency to announce his retirement after 2019 but don't think Hafeez will retire even 2023. At the moment Hafeez is keen to play both 2019 ODI and 2020 T20 World Cup.

Even Hafeez gets 5 duck in 5 ODI against South Africa Inzi will back him up with the performance against weaker Zimbabwe ODI.
Malik will play at least 2 good innings against South Africa.

In the last ODI series against New Zealand Hafeez made 2 half centuries
and Malik couldn't even make 1 half century. With Hafeez you can get good 10
overs bowling from him as well.

I don't think so.Malik should be selected in playing eleven in all matches. He plays for team,he is not selfish like Hafeez.Thats why he bats at a very good strike rate.He is a handy offspinner who didn't get caught thrice due to chucking. He is a good fielder. He is experienced,he is fit. Moreover I want to say that he should be made the captain of LOI side instead of Sarfraz.

What I know is that. Hafeez and Malik shouldn't be in the playing 11 at the same time. At least one of them has to be benched if not both. If we have to win a world cup

You may hate him in ODI’s but I would retain him for the next T20 WC.

He can milk spin and if the pace or pitch is not too hot to handle, rotate strike effectively against the quicks.

Plus, he has an accelerating gear which he is not afraid to use unlike some others. :hafeez

Problem we have in odis is not of Malik...is having too many players like Malik in the batting line up.
Out of malik, hafeez, babar, haris, imam and sarfraz...frankly only 2 are needed in top 6...if you consistenly want to push the 320-340 mark.
Possibly Malik, Babar and at a push Sarfraz...no one else.

I agree although wasn't it Hafeez who pushed our score over 330 in the CT final?

I think times up for both Malik and Hafeez, arguably Malik's time should have been up 5 or even 6 years ago.
