I remember twitter poll by Kevin Pietersen asking English fans whether they would prefer option between winning a World cup or the Ashes.

It was conducted during world cup & surprisingly 52% people choose a World Cup win.

So what's the verdict now? Would English fans on this forum make a trade off between World cup win for regaining the Ashes.

Similarly would any Aussie supporter opt for a World cup to retaining the Ashes in England after 18 years?

It’s a false dichotomy.

For four years the ECB retooled County cricket in order to win the World Cup, but did so at the cost of the test side.

The English fans might feel differently at the moment, but when they will look back at the summer of 2019, they will remember it for the World Cup win and not the Ashes disappointment. They badly needed to win a World Cup and they finally managed to do it with their greatest ODI team, and although the Ashes will always be the pinnacle for them, they will win it many, many times in the future. Another World Cup May not happen in the future.

For Australia, the most successful World Cup team ever, winning (or not losing) the Ashes in England after a period of 18 years makes up for the World Cup semifinal - a humiliation for the ages.

I guess winning the World Cup and the reclaiming the Ashes would have been too perfect a summer for England, and it is not normal in life for everything to be perfect.

I heard Bob Willis on podcast calling out entire English batting line up apart from Root & Stokes since last one year.

I used to think Bob is overly critical in critisism of quality players like Bairstow or Buttler, but I guess he's excellent in analysis that good test batsman has to have average above 40.

poor english supporters...if it had been the other way around, like losing the WC and winning ashes, they would be going head over heels trying to prove how amazing a test series win is and how lame is WC and how worthless it is...

Eng LOI team is the best since the Aussies 2003/2007 WC winning team... but their test team is probably the worst in last 20 years ( all down to their poor pooor pooooooor batting) ... no wc player... stokes maybe the spark of brilliance, but other than him, extremly poor.... Roy , the beast of LOI, is worse than even imam in test cricket.... and rest arent any better... Root crushing himself under the captaincy load... selectors hell-bent on making butler a test player when he is miles away from being one .... playing overton over curaan, no promising spinner .... huh ...

Does there even need to be a comparison? The WC proves a side is the best in one format...cricket has the luxury of multiple formats. Get over it.

We will remember both. The Ashes lost (probably) in England for the first time in nineteen years.

With the passage of time, happiness usually supersedes disappointment. Few years down the line, the summer of 2019 would most probably be remembered for the World Cup glory.

The World Cup is a universally-recognised brand that goes beyond cricket. After the World Cup win I saw a number of English people boast all over the internet that England is the only country to have won the Rugby, Football and Cricket World Cups - and they got a number of responses from other Europeans and Americans. You can't do that with the Ashes - whose importance is very difficult to put across to anybody not interested in cricket (except the English and Aussies ofc). Think of the Ashes as being equivalent to the Six Nations Cup in Rugby - hardly anybody who isn't a rugby fan has heard of it, while we're all familiar with the existence and importance of the Rugby World Cup, even if we've never watched a game of rugby in our lives.

Not if your root, first England captain since 2001 to lose home ashes

Ashes will always be pinnacle for an Australian or E glish cricketer. Now that England has won a world cup I believe world cup will again take a back seat for E gland and will not be in focus till England host another one

WOrld cup.

Anyone saying otherwise will be ridiculous.

There is a 50% that ENglish will win an Ashes, but when it comes to World Cup the chances drop.

England might win the next ashes or the next next one or the next next next one. But no one knows when it will win the next world cup

At the start of the summer I was asked this question by a colleague, and I asked myself it as well: if you could pick one this season, would it be the World Cup or the Ashes?

To be honest I went for the World Cup straight away. We have won many Ashes series but had never won a World Cup. We were also hosting the tournament and to have won it would have been absolutely fantastic. And as things turned out, the victory and celebrations were beyond even my wildest dreams.

Of course, as a diehard follower of English cricket, I would have loved to win both. But I just had a gut feeling that only one would have been realistically possible. And so it was.

Massive work now needs to go into the England Test team now however, because this has obviously been deprioritised by the ECB for some years.

I don’t anticipate the Ashes being won back by England for quite some time.

Root was desperate to win the ashes as his reputation being the captain has been damaged

Funny to read the views of English posters. They love the world cup win but have to act grim so that world knows they're mourning for Ashes. Stop the act, gents. World Cup wins are priceless. Enjoy while it lasts. Who knows when you will win one again? Maybe never..

:))

wait there are more to come.

For neutral and English fans - the World Cup.

For Australians - the Ashes.

England would rather have won the WC. They had a great team and needed to change the perception of them not winning big games. They can win the ashes again in the future, there is no certainty they will win the WC again.

This was England’s first ever world cup win so it was more important. (N.B - Decided on most boundaries though - what a joke ;0)

England never want to lose Ashes at home as there is a long history behind it, which started in 1882.

It's great that England won the WC but I feel the oldies will always talk about England's home loss in Ashes whenever that World Cup win will be mentioned as it happened one after another.

As far as Australia is concerned, they have 5 World Cups, it's a small deal for them. An Ashes win away in England is all they would love to take up with. I doubt but there is a chance they may pick a test series win in India ahead of WC win as well.

Ben Stokes was asked a question just after winning the Headingly test on whether it was the best knock he had ever played. It was an obvious attempt to get him to say "Yes it is because tests/ashes are best, etc" but his reply was that it was in his top 2.

That should make the relative standings pretty clear.

I must admit this ashes loss has hurt a lot plus the World Cup rules ruined it for me slightly.

With a bit of luck, and being able to get Cheaply (even once), we could be all square going into the last match.

Ashes will become a blur the next one is always around the corner … its a cycle … all other test match series seem to be centred around getting to the next Ashes.

World Cup will be remembered a lot longer and taste sweeter as time goes on.
No one can say England has no wins.....They are the champions like it or not.
If any country deserves it, its England after being so close so many times.

ENGLAND World Cup Champions 2019.

Test cricket is the real deal.Ashes series is very competitive and usually the better team wins. The five test matches are allow batsmen and bowlers to prove themselves.Weather and luck play a big part in one day cricket whereas a five day test gives equal opportunities to both sides.

Ha

As per latest Twitter poll conducted by KP, 53% English fans would have preferred regaining the Ashes over World cup win with 52000 total votes.

England had been focusing on developing a limited over side since 2015, which led to many test players such as Broad, Anderson and Cook never playing LOI cricket again.

The fact is England will have plenty of opportunities to win the ashes again but the World Cup is every 4 years and requires good fortune!.

They were the home team and I personally don't think we will see a better England Odi team than this one.
