The combination conundrum

The World Cup 2019 edition is in England. As of late Pakistan has done extremely well in English conditions. At times I feel Pakistan is better climatised to English conditions then they are to the UAE conditions.

Therefore I have come to the conclusion, Pakistan does not have a player skills conundrum. They have the right combination conundrum.

See as we speak. This is Pakistan’s best pace battery in English conditions. In my eyes the best pace battery in the world.

Amir
Hassan
Junaid
Rumaan
Shaheen

This is the best pace battery outside of UAE. Which for me we should not even be even be playing in that place In the first place .

With 5 pacers and 2 AR and a keeper batsman, this only leaves us with 3 specialist batsman in:

Fakhar
Imam
Babar.

Which is scary considering how shaky our batting is. Also this is not even factoring in imad.

I think only one of imad, Shadab, faheem should be playing in the XI. I think faheem should miss out all together.

Also dropping one pacer to bring in another specialist batsman is needed seeing how shaky our batsman are and have the spin capacity in the AR selected.

We have to also factor in malik and Hafeez. It’s simple as this, they both can not play. Only the one. It hurts me to say this but it has to be Hafeez. Hafeez can play quality pace assuming theirs nothing in the pitch. Malik on the other hand can not play quality pace regardless of the pitch. So we must factor Malik out as he’s a liability and walking wicket.

As it stands the squad should stand at:

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Hafeez
Malik
Sarfraz
Shadab
Imad
Faheem
Amir
Hassan
Junaid
Shaheen
Rumaan
Asif Ali
Haris

This is the most plausible squad to travel to England. Factoring everything in, I feel this is the combination to play.

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Hafeez
Malik
Sarfraz
Imad/Shadab
Amir
Hassan
Junaid
Rumaan/Shaeen.

We must play more specialist batsmen and select specialist bowlers. Reduce the bits and pieces players as we have seen, they ain’t doing one trade in a specialist manner but average/mediocre in both facets.

Now our ODI record against top teams speaks volumes of this bits and players type xi. We all know what Einstein described insanity as.

I personally can’t see the squad going to England any different to what I have selected. Maybe, just maybe we may see Asif Ali out for Umar Akmal but that’s unlikely.

I honestly believe this is the biggest conundrum for the think tank right now and is causing a lot of late nights.

So put yourself in their shoes and select your combination from the plausible squad I have selected and explain why. Remember this ain’t your personal XI of your fave players but for the team and conditions.

No disagree. We will never chase more than 270 with Ur line up.
The team today is the most likely. We need sarfaraz in at 4 and batting as far down as possible. Faheem was nine today

My line up? That’s the squad for the PST year and a half. I asked for YOU to select the line up.

We could consider Junaid/Hassaan instead of Faheem to strenghthen the bowling but not having a power hitter at the end of the innings in England might cost us.

Shame we cannot somehow fit Asif Ali in the side, feel like he would do well in England.

Pak may never find a good combination with two batting duds Shadab and Faheem at no. 7 and 8.

We can afford only 1 of Shadab/Faheem/Imad and my choice would be Shadab.

My line-up

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Haris
Malik
Hafeez
Sarfraz
Shadab
Hassan
Abbas

What are the chances of getting this Abbas guy into the ODI team for the WC? From what I’ve heard about him, England could be ideal. Looking forward to seeing this guy in the test matches.

I am wary of only 2 guys in pak batting line up -zaman and malik.Zaman we have neutralized due to his one dimensional play.Malik is a thorn in the middle overs.Rest are 90s era batting style players.

If he played for any other nation including minors, Abbas would have been blooded into the Pakistan one day side, especially with the word cup in England. However this is Pakistan so probably years or never.

Pakistan use to be more succesful in ODIs in the past because of wicket taking bowlers. Yasir Shah comes to mind. If he clicks he can single handedly demolish the oppossition. Malik is a spinners/medium pacers basher. Every team has spinners and medium pacers so we need Malik for batting and his excellent fielding. And sorry i cant trust Amir anymore so he doesnt make my eleven. Instead I have Abbass. I am also taking a chance with Shan Masood.

My eleven:
1. Fakhar Zaman
2. Shan Masood
3. Babar Azam
4. Haris Sohail
5. Shoaib Malik
6. Sarfaraz Ahmed
7. Shadab Khan
8. Yasir Shah
9. Hasan Ali
10. Shaheen Afridi
11. Muhammad Abbass

I'm hoping the South Africa ODIs will force us to move on from Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik since we'll never do it ourselves. We cannot carry these two all the way to the World Cup.

Imam has been excellent against lower ranked opposition, doing nothing against top bowling attacks in ODIs and is not a solution to our opening issue. Then there's the form of Sarfraz to worry about.

Asif Ali needs to show he can concentrate for more than 10 balls but I think he'll be dangerous on true, flat pitches where it's easier to hit through the line than UAE.

Also with the Pakistan Cup scheduled before the World Cup - I expect 1-2 players to emerge from there.

Basically we need to reprise our CT17 formula of hoping our bowlers fire again in England and minimise the work our batsmen need to do.

For me imad wasim is a good batsman who can play in top 6..i will not play Imad but instead make Babar open..
This combination should b tried in S. Africa and latter on consolidate on it for World Cup
Fakhar
Babar
Haris sohail
Umar akmal
Sarfaraz
Hafeez
Imad
Amir
Hassan
Afridi
