What's new

The Commonwealth Games, Birmingham (July 28 - August 8)

I didnt expect arshad to win. I thought maybe he would bag bronze at best cause he has injuries and hadnt seen him throw above 86.

Guy beats his own record three times while with a injury.

The 90m one was interesting and i think even arshad got surprised what had happened. When arshad throws and knows he has put effort on it he keeps screaming till the javelin lands. This 90m one he ended up throwing it higher in the air and arshad didnt even scream. He screamed for the 88m one but not the 90m throw. And at the end viola, every commentator on different channels were surprised..

Indian fans were hoping neeraj would get the 90m in the world championship where anderson peters threw a 90m javeline twice.
Arshad was just next level.

While these games dont meant alot, still 90m throw still shows you are amongst the worlds best.

Some indian journalist asked arshad about neeraj and he said that he really did miss him at the games and would pray for him to come out of his injury.

Really happy for Arshad, i have been watching javeline throws for the past one year only because of this guy.

Double Olympic medalist P V Sindhu brushed past her opponent to win GOLD in Badminton Women single event !!!

There is good bonhomie between the two. I recall post Olympics, when a particular media house was trying to act smug and get some comments out of Neeraj vis a vis Arshad to stoke some controversy for their TRP rating, Neeraj side stepped those questions. That's how sportsmen should be . They don't need to get into petty politics and jingoism as played by select media houses and journalists.

Yes most likely they hang a lot as being the only South Asians on javelin circuit also have great respect for each other hopefully it stays that way since I see some Pakistani media outlets already trying to stir a rivalry.

It's really bad with all these sony channels.most of the times they only show Indians participants.

I miss all other important competition.

There are 3-4 Channels but they only show Indians participants. It was same with Olympics as well.

It was different with world athletics championship though because there weren't many Indians but they only had one channel showing it.

They should atleast dedicate to one channel where they don't show Indian participants.

More controversy at CWG. Covid positive Australian player was allowed to play in yesterday's cricket final.

FYI, Indian Discus thrower, last games bronze medalist was not allowed earlier.

Lakshay Sen is such an exciting Badminton talent destined for greatness.

If he keeps his head, he can be our next Olympic medalist.

He has already beaten many Top 10 players including Chinese so he know he belongs at this level.

GOLD for him here.

India will finish at 4th spot in Medal tally .

New Zealand has only one Gold medal event left now. Even if they win that, India will be ahead because of more silver medals.

and yeah we still have 2 more Gold medal events left (Sharath Kamal & Hockey)

Finishing 4th without archery and shooting is not bad. Would very likely have finished 3rd otherwise.

OTOH, bridging the gap with AUS and UK is formidable for now.

PV Sindhu:

2 Olympic medals
5 World Championship medals
4 Commonwealth games medals
4 BWF World Tour titles
6 BWF Grand Prix titles
3 BWF Superseries titles
2 Asian Games medals

GOAT

These are the medals won by PV Sindhu and she's only 27 years old.
Unbelievable.

We have one more gold medal event in Badminton Men Double...so total of 3 Gold medal matches yet to come....

But yes comfortable 4th place now. Good overall performance considering Shooting is not here which would have got us around 15 medals more.

Chinese are hardly a threat these days. Danes and Indonesians are much stronger especially in men's. These two along with India are top3 overall atm.

Ranking isnt based on number of total medals. Its on the basis of total number of gold medals

In the event of a tie in the number of gold medals, the number of silver medals and then the number of bronze medals.

I was posted when India and Nz had same number of Gold Medals.

Anyhow we surpassed and 4th spot is confirmed ..

Mens field hockey - India settle for silver after losing to Aus in the finals.

Something needs to be done extra to get into top 2 of hockey. We are ranked # 4 and keep winning bronze/ silver. So frustrating .....

With lack of shooting , archery did not expect India to get these many medals. Let's hope we work to sustain these in next edition while also excelling in our traditional strengths.

We should definitely target to get to 85-90 medals next time.

Right now India is trailing in hockey.
Can they win the gold here?
I m very excited to find out.
Let's go!

Don't watch Indian channel then.. Switch to other one where they show non Indians..

India will end up with 61 medals including 22 Golds. Overall 4th position on the table.

We could easily have gone to 75+ medals and to No.3 Position if these CWG have a shooting & archery range to host both event. ( Both Olympic core sports )

A very fine performance by all Indian athletes. The whole country is proud of their effort.

New sporting heroes are found and the proven one have also gave fine performance.

Bye Bye CWG!!

Top 10 nations posted above. Congrats to all the winners. Thanks to all who contributed in the thread.

Bye bye till Sep 23rd for Asiad. 45 days to GO :)

Great effort from India their investment is alternative sports is showing on world stage I wish we could follow Suit.

Pakistan with its population and general physical attributes should be targeting 9-12 gold medals in CW games yet due to negligence we will keep on relying on individual brilliance to get our one or two golds.

52 events in swimming.
Aus dominating them like no tomorrow.
Wonder why England don't reduce few of them to stop Aus from no 1 position.

Very poor show Pakistan should atleast be realistically setting a goal of top 10 finish by year 2030

I wonder why Islamic Solidarity Games are pretty much not talked about. I hope leading Islamic nations come together and spend a few millions on PR and make it a noticeable event at world level.

Wow, not a single medal for BD? They really are poor in sports. SriLanka, Pak and India have done fine. Good to see India getting medals in various events, rather than getting stuck in one or two strong events. More investments needs to be done. Outcome is fully dependent on how much the countries are ready to invest. Most countries can perform at close to their potential if they ramp up investments in each sport to global levels. Best of luck to all four nations in future

Apart from the northern mountain people, when did Pakistanis become Samoan?

India can win 10 gold medals in Olympic 2024

They spending lot of money

Imagine arshad Nadeem vs Neeraj Chopra fighting for gold

Australia picked up their 1000th gold medal at these games in the Netball final that was marred by disgusting boorish behavior by the crowd.

NO. We are not winning 10 gold medals for the next 20 years at least.

This is not a switch that can be just turned on by funding. To become a sporting nation it needs funding for a long period. The culture and results need to improve slowly. I am not talking about one off individual performance but a sustained improvement.

Till 2008, india would not even feature in most finals and get the occasional medal. Since then, we have seen an increase in athletes getting into the finals in the sports where we have been traditionally poor (track and field). Sports where we were decent at (wrestling, badminton, weightlifting) has seen players making it to the quarters regularly and even the occasional silver or bronze medal.

The next step would be to get more athletes into medal contention in our strong sports and more athletes in finals in our weaker sports. A good result for 2024 would be 8-10 medals, even if it’s only bronze and silver. By 2032 we could possibly be looking at regular golds. Say 15 medals, with 2-3 golds.

To get to 10 gold would mean competing with the likes of Germany, Australia, Brazil etc and getting into the top 10 countries, would require another 10-12 years. Essentially, I don’t believe that 10 golds will be possible till 2044, if that.

Also, most of the top 10 nations (excluding Russia, US and China) get more than 75% of golds and 50% of medals from 3-4 sports.

Looking at India combat sports and shooting sports seems to be our forte. We should look at increasing funding on these as a priority. Put money on all sports but focus more on wrestling, shooting and archery. Also, invest in other Olympic combat sports such taekwondo, judo, fencing.

Stunning dominance from Australia and England. Maybe a bit too one sided really.

I know it would be a one-sided affair but would love to have Football in the games included, and some other team sports as well.

For Football they can either have you send u-23 teams, or have a mercy rule were if team is winning 7-0 the game ends, cuz we all know england, would eat all the teams alive haha, but would be a fun watch.

I do hope we can see Mens cricket in the future commonwealth games as well

The Pakistan Boxing Federation (PBF) on Wednesday confirmed the disappearance of two national boxers in Birmingham, just a few days after the conclusion of the Commonwealth Games.

Secretary PBF Nasir Tang told to Dawn.com that the two pugilists — Suleman Baloch and Nazeerullah — disappeared a couple of hours before the team’s departure for Islamabad.

The travel documents of both the boxers are with the PBF officials, he added.

Tang said the British government and the police had been informed about the disappearance of boxers.

“We have seized the documents of the duo under the standard operating procedure,” he said.

The PBF secretary said the boxers would be traced soon.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Olympic Association (POA) has formed a four-member committee to investigate the matter.

CWG medalist Ali Asad returns positive dope test

KARACHI: Pakistan’s wrestler Ali Asad, who bagged a bronze medal in the recently-held Commonwealth Games 2022, returned a positive dope test result.

According to the details, Ali had undergone a dope sample test before departing for the Games, which returned positive.

The national wrestler later completed a second drug test during the Games, which also resulted in a positive result.

Ali then requested a Sample B test after his Sample A test returned positive, but that too produced the same result.

Ali will now get an opportunity to appear before the inquiry committee and give his stand.

Details further suggest that the wrestler may face up to four years of the ban if found guilty of using performance-enhancing drugs. The Commonwealth Games administration will also take back the medal from Pakistan.
