Mubarak!

Our first GOLD!

Congratz to Inam, very good job and congratz to the city of Gujranwala for bringing home most of the medals.

1 gold medal for a country of 210m people is still pathetic. We should be investing in our traditionally strong sports - weightlifting, boxing and wrestling and trying to improve in events like shooting as well. However, there doesn't seem to be any plan or strategy. Just individual athletes going as far as they can under their own steam. Dur fitteh muh to the 'intizamiah'. They should resign after this national embarrassment.

How in the hell do India get so many medals in commonwealth but struggle to get a single bronze in the Olympics

Was discussed earlier in the thread. Massive difference in level of competition between the two.

Still quite creditable for India to finish third overall -- well ahead of Canada now. Our contingent should be proud; and use this as a platform to push for more in Olympics.

shaz619 Mary Kom won gold.

Told you bro, I had looked up the tournament seeds she'd be facing and stylistically neither were a huge challenge for her but she doesn't have age on her side and just needs to work smarter. The Olympics will be the biggest test

Pakistani wrestler Muhammad Inam won a gold medal for Pakistan on Saturday, in the final of the Men’s Freestyle 86kg Gold Medal event at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Taking place at Carrara Arena, in the last event for Pakistan, the 86kg-wrestler Inam in his final fight trashed Nigeria’s Bibo by 3:0.

In the first period of the fight, 29-year-old Inam won one technical point while Bibo failed to score any point. In the second period, Inam secured 2, 2, and 1 technical points to secure five points and subsequently finished with six points against Bibo’s nil.

Having secured six technical points, Inam was awarded three classification points and won the fight with 3:0 to win the first gold medal for Pakistan.

Earlier, in the semifinal of the event, Inam defeated Canadian Alexander Moore in style after securing four technical points against Moore's six. He was given Victory by Fall and thus, qualified for the final of the event.

In the 1/4 final, Inam dominated over Indian Somveer as he secured 10 points in the first period and did not let Somveer score a single technical point to win the fight, as he was given victory by Technical Superiority.

Inam in the 1/8 final of the same event defeated Australian Jayden Lawrence by 4:1. In the first period of the fight Inam secured nine technical points against Lawrence's four points while in the second period Inam secured five points to end with 14 technical points against Lawrence's four, winning four classification points to clinch the fight 4:1.

Pakistan on their last day at the games secured one gold and one bronze medal to finally take their tally to five in total where the wrestlers won four and weightlifter won one.

The spokesperson for the Pakistan Sports Board announced that gold medalist Muhammad Inam and bronze medalist Tayyab Raza will be given prizes of Rs5,000,000 and Rs1,000,000 respectively for bringing home the accolades.

She is an outright inspiration for all us lazy *** people. A mother of two, and such grit and determination.

That video doing the rounds on social media of Inam accepting his medal followed by the Pak Sar Zameen playing and him holding back his tears is definitely goose-bump inducing.

Fun fact: The meaning of the word Inam in Urdu is "gift".

Today he gifted Pakistan her first gold.

I think it's important these medals are celebrated, still remember our sole Olympic bronze medal wins by paes , rathore and malleshwari and these guys became over night stars and household names, we forgot cricket for couple of weeks.
Pakistan needs to do the same, make him a celebrity. Let kids start looking up to him and watch Pakistan producing stars in 10 to 15 years.

I hope Inam inspires other wrestlers and Pak govt to invest in sports at least now. It will divert people from terrorism, perversion, militancy & migration.

Currently Pakistan is one place better than last times standings :). Also there is a gold medal to show unlike last time... Positive growth... I hope Inam gets at least a bronze in Tokyo and fill the long void of Olympic medals.

Congrats to Indian contingent for their outstanding performance. Specially new faces like Manika Batra doing damage and taking gold against world's best players of Singapore. Also they have developed hugely in Badminton. I really like PV sindhu and Saina.

Pakistan is not all about terrorism. It is also a victim of terrorism like India, its all politics brother. India and Pakistan just play blame games. Both infiltrate and try to destabilize each other, nobody is sane.

Of course not. My point was to indicate sports can act as a catalyst for underprivileged and jobless to become famous and lead a good life.

Pakistan are not using the genetic pool advantage they have in Punjab region, if Iran and India can win multiple medals in wrestling & weight lifting Pak too can.

Yes very emotional moment, just found out that he had requested for funds from government and they refused. He had to collect some money to train and prepare for commonwealth games.

 I hope he at least gets a hero welcome when he lands in Islamabad.

Yes very emotional moment, just found out that he had requested for funds from government and they refused. He had to collect some money to train and prepare for commonwealth games.

Well, pretty sad. But I cant blame the politicians only. Its not always about the money. People in Pakistan are crazy about just cricket. They dont care about a single other sport. People get the leaders as they are themselves.

Nobody cares about development of other games so why do they invest in other games. Such a huge pool of talent in Pakistan is getting wasted but why do they care about country's pride when they can fill their pockets with that money. And sink the condition of Pakistan's economy more. They have given the lollipop of CPEC in the name of development. And I am pretty sure again PML-N will come in power because of it. They dont invest money where there are gains. But they are investing money where there are debts, more taxes, no business profits and just sinking economy. Well if there is such high corruption in Pakistan, its because people in Pakistan are corrupt themselves. And very few which are not just pass by these things. Or some others who cant see all of it happening leave the country. Well I hope someone like Imran Khan can change these things, at least he has shown glimpses and willingness of change.

So India currently at 25 golds and 1 more guaranteed (Saina or Sindhu). Potentially three more (Kidambi Srikanth, Badminton men's doubles and squash women's doubles). So would end up anywhere between 26 to 29 golds.

Still short of 38 we won in New Delhi in 2010, but quite creditable given that there is no home advantage this time.

They are going to remove shooting from the next games (7 golds this time for India). India should protest vigorously and try and keep it.

Muhammad inam has done a brilliant job in winning the gold but other than that its been a pretty poor show from pakistan. The authorities really need to invest some time and money before we stop winning even these 2-3 medals. There is a lot of talent in sports but it just needs proper training.

For instance Talha Talib(18) and Nooh Dastagir butt(20) in weightlifting won bronze this time and have won numerous medals in asian and commonwealth events over the past 2 years and with proper facilities are both capable of winning medals at the top level. Both would currently win medals in the world junior events if they participated but they dont due to shortage of funds.

Similarly Arshad nadeem is a very promising javelin thrower who at 20 is already a national record holder with 80+ throws(previous record was 76+), he is a former world no 3 in the u-20 rankings and has a lot of potential but would properly fall down the circuit due to no proper training facilities or funds.

This is the real reason why so many pakistanis excel at the junior levels but are nowhere to be seen on the senior level e.g squash(current world champions and made the world final every time for the past 12-14 years). With proper effort put in(like india have done the past decade or so) i have no doubts that pakistan can win medals in the olympics too let alone qualify for it.

As for Inam, he for me is one of the best athletes pakistan has produced in the last decade or so. As someone pointed out above he has to spend his own money to prepare and still wins matches almost every time he competes. His record is really admirable given the situation.

Commonwealth games : Gold 2010, Lost bronze bout in the last seconds in 2014 , Gold 2018
Saf games : Gold 2016
Asian beach games : Bronze 2014, Gold 2016
World Beach Champion 2017
Commonwealth Championships : Silver 2016-2017

As you can see hes won a medal al,ost every time he competes in these events .
Even in the asian events where the competition is of very high level he reaches the latter stages most of the times and only looses to the top wrestlers of the world after tough fights.

The fact that he does this with hardly any investment shows that had there been some he ould probably be amongst the best in the world.

How in the hell do India get so many medals in commonwealth but struggle to get a single bronze in the Olympics

The quality of Indian athletes this CW is world class across various sports. We have a few World Champions in weightlifting and shooting. World #1 male badminton player. Two elite female badminton players in Sindhu and Saina. And most importantly, a 20 year old Javelin thrower who would have destroyed the competition in some of the last Olympics. Wrestling and boxing too should give us a realistic hope for a few medals.

How in the hell do India get so many medals in commonwealth but struggle to get a single bronze in the Olympics

Was discussed earlier in the thread. Massive difference in level of competition between the two.

The movement is in the right direction. India had a total of 50 medals in 2006 CWG, 64 in 2014 and will likely exceed that tally this time. As the country grows more affluent, there is more money to support athletes and we will keep improving.

Also, some of the events in which we used to win medals previously are no longer there at CWG now. Shooting pairs events golds were given till 2010 and 3 golds given for each in weightlifting in 2002.Also 2010 Delhi games had greco roman wrestling, tennis and archery where we won decent number of medals.

If you compare the sports which are there in 2018 commonwealth games , following are comparable numbers for golds-

2002- 15
2006 -15
2010- 23 (home advantage, usually results in 50% more number of medals)
2014 -15

2018 - we might end up around 26-27. Significant improvement.

It's awesome to see how much we have improved in Badminton. Beating Malaysia for Gold in team event in CWG is great achievementWe only used to have Saina before. Now, Srikanth is WorldNo1 in Mens Singles, Sindhu is WorldNo3 in Womens Singles(was No2 for most part of last year), Saina is back in top 10. We also have pretty good depth in Mens Singles, have 3 players in top15. Also, we used to suck really badly in doubles events. Now, we seem to be improving in doubles too. Have a gem of a player in Satwik who is a specialist doubles player and is still only 17. Satwik reached CWG Finals in Mens Doubles(will be playing in finals tomorrow) and SF in Mixed Doubles. We also have some pretty good prospects in juniors too.

Interesting thing is most of these players are from same state - Andhra Pradesh/Telengana. Shows that just having 1.3 Billion population isn't sufficient to produce players unless you have some good facilities and coaching. Hyderabad has best facilities and coaching in country for badminton and no surprise that we are now consistently producing good players. Imagine if we had similar facilities in other parts of country?

I have really good hopes from Badminton in next Olympics..I think we can win 2-3 medals. Sindhu will always rise up for big events, she has been reaching Semifinals and Finals consistently in all the prestigious tournaments, just needs to work on few things, especially stamina. Srikanth is kinda opposite to Sindhu, he hasn't lived up to expectations in main tournaments, hoping it changes soon. Saina is always a threat. Excited for our future in badminton.

India in the top 3, even Bangladesh and SL outdoing Pakistan. Not a good sign, or all the athletes in Pakistan busy bowling phhaast.

Pakistan ended up doing better than BD and SL. Thats not saying much though, still a lot of room for improvement.

India have not hosted the games before.

Last time i checked Delhi was in India:) and the games there in 2010 was only 8 years ago:)

Homeground advantages would only be 50% more medals for countries that dont get many medals:)

Congratulations to Inam and Pakistan. It’s high time to invest in sports and such sorts of things as we are 23rd in the list which is poor.

Women's singles badminton: Saina takes gold, Sindhu takes silver! WHAT. A. MATCH.

They've done India proud yet again.

What a badminton match. Haryana athletes won more than 50 percent medals. Feeling happy as a proud haryanvi.

Updating my previous posts adding "Athletics" as a potential medal after we found a gem in Neeraj Chopra..sure shot medal prospect in Tokyo...

Can India get 10 medals in Olympics 2020 at Tokyo?

Lets elaborate sports by sports:

Badminton: We are a top badminton nation now and at par with traditional superpower China. We have top 10 players in both men and women including world No. 1 Srikanth Kidambi and Olympic medalist in Sindhu and Saina.
Realistic Expectation: 2 Medals.

Shooting: Our go to sport for Olympic medal. We won medals in shooting in 2004, 2008 and 2012. Rio Olympics was a blip as we missed 2 medals narrowly. We have world class shooters in Jitu Rai, Heena sidhu, Gagan Narang and 16 year old prodigy Manu bhaker ( won commonwealth gold with ease). There will be other top shooters too as
we always send a strong squad in our favorite Olympic sports.
Realistic Expectation: 2 Medals.

Weightlifting: Mirabhai chanu is world class and expected to bring in a medal. Other women weightlifter are too in with a shot. Don't have any realistic hopes in men weightlifting though ( we are good at Asian and commonwealth level in Men section)
Realistic Expectation: 1 Medal.

Wrestling: Sakshi Malik got us a medal last Olympic. So hopes are high again. but not sure if there are any new world class wrestlers. We are dominating CWG games but still through old warhorse like double Olympic medalist Sushil Kumar and Phogat sisters.
Realistic Expectation: 1 Medal.

Tennis: We are in with a chance in mixed doubles and men double only. Sania/ Boppanna is a top team in mixed team tennis and missed bronze by a whisker in their previous try at Olympics. Bopanna along with any other men partner ( maybe Indian team legend Leander Paes) can bring in a medal.
Realistic Expectation: 1 Medal.

Boxing: Pleasantly surprised with men boxing team performance. All of our 8 boxers are coming with assured medals. Not one boxer missed. In women, you can never count the legend Marycom ( already a Olympic medalist)!
Realistic Expectation: 1 Medal.

Athletics. Neeraj Chopra. Javelin. World Class.
Realistic Expectation: 1 Medal.

That's a total of 9 realistic medals.

Now coming to others sports expectation:

Hockey: Always a hit or miss! On our day, we can scrap through with a bronze at best.

Archery: We always have good archers who do well in world championship & world cup but falter at Olympics! Maybe a bronze at best, somehow!

Gynamstics: Dipa karmikar came 4th in Rio but realistically no medal chance in Rio unless dipa surprises herself...

Swimming. Athletics, Diving: Almost 60% medals are in these 3 sports but we are no where near world class in any of these...maybe a lucky scrp through bronze in an athletic event ( except Neeraj Chopra)

Other sports: No point talking, we are zilch in those.

So can we get 10 medals at Rio? Yes, with a little bit of luck we can.

This year Asian games has GOLD in following sports which we don't play/ have negligible participation -

Baseball - 2
Bowling - 6
Bridge - 6
Equestrian - 6
Fencing - 12
Jet Ski - 2
Judo - 15
Martial arts - 54
Paragliding - 6
Skating - 6
Sepaktraw - 6
Sports climbing - 2
Taekwando - 2

This is apart from Aquatics, swimming, gymnastics, caneoing, sailing & cycling. Which leaves us to compete only in 130 GOLD medal events where there will be competition from China, Japan, Malaysia, Korea, Taipei, Iran, Uzbeks, Kazakhs, Thai & Indonesia. Seems like things are tweaked as expected to give Indonesia a chance to finish in top 10.

If we don't protest, we will see even chinese yoga, kung fu as sports in these games. 2022 CWG have removed shooting citing lack of infra around Birmingham area!

We need to make sure Olympic events are never dropped/ reduced from CWG/ Asian games and invest more in sports like kayak/ canoe/ sailing/ fencing and gymnastics.

PS: How on earth is game of bridge a sport

Indian wrestler bites Canadian opponent, cracks a 'tandoori chicken' joke

Indian wrestler Sumit Malik won Commonwealth Games gold in the men's 125kg freestyle class on Saturday but caused a stew by biting an opponent.

Bushy-bearded Canadian Korey Jarvis accused Sumit of biting him during their round-robin bout on the Gold Coast.

The Indian made no attempt to deny it, cheekily passing judgement on how his rival tasted.

“It occurred in the heat of the moment,” said Sumit. “I am sincerely sorry that it happened — but, no, he did not taste like tandoori chicken.”

Defending champion Jarvis was hopping mad, despite finishing with the silver medal, as he did in Delhi eight years ago after a similar incident.

“He poked me in the eye and then he bit me,” he fumed. “It feels like groundhog day. I was winning in the last few seconds in Delhi and lost the gold medal — basically the same thing happened today.”

No action was taken to punish Sumit and Jarvis went on to beat Tayab Raza for silver.

Sumit won the decider by forfeit after Nigeria's Sinivie Boltic was forced to pull out with injury.

India enjoyed a happy penultimate day at the Commonwealth Games with eight gold medals in total, including three in boxing, to sit third on the overall medals table.

Wrestler Inam reveals the psychological master plan that helped him defeat Indian rival

Wrestler Muhammad Inam, who on Saturday became the only Pakistani athlete to bag a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2018, has revealed how he hatched a spontaneous psychological plan to tame Indian rival Somveer in the quarter-finals before going all the way.

In a series of videos made soon after his historic 3-0 victory over Nigeria's Bibo in the final, Inam recalled: "Somveer was already the pre-event favourite and on my way to the wrestling mat I noticed how Indian fans were outnumbering Pakistani fans. They were chanting 'India, India!' and cheering for their guy.

"This is when I changed my mindset. I told myself that all these people are not shouting 'India India' but are actually saying Inam, Inam!'"

25/26 Golds are good but this doesn't give same happiness as winning even 2 or 3 Gold in Olympics. But things are definitely improving though hope more and more private sector involve in our sports.

Somehow we should able to convince IOA to include Kabaddi ;)

Australian mens hockey team keep their perfect record in the commonwealth games winning their sixth gold medal. The only team to win in the mens. Australia have taken their skill to new levels and this is probably the best ever mens hockey team to ever be assembled.

I don't think your assessment of chances in tennis is realistic at all. Sania Mirza is a showpony -- hasn't won anything in her entire career except when she's partnering with a really strong player like Martin Hingis. Hingis dumped her a year ago, and she's fallen apart -- now spends more time on twitter than on court.

Paes/Bhupathi were brilliant in their heyday, but are now old and fought with each other during their prime. Ego got in the way of sporting excellence.

Take it from me: we'll win nothing tennis in either Asian Games or Olympics.

If Imran wins the 2018 elections then watch Pakistan's performance in the 2026 games. I bet we will crack into the top 10.

How good are Australia 198 medals in total we completely dominate the Commonwealth Games and have been dominating for a while now.

198 medals in total beating countries like India, England, Canada.

We have a great sporting culture and we are a proud sporting nation.

In everything we do we do it well congrats to the Aussie sportsmen and women, you have done us proud yet again.

"We come for a land down under, the great Southern Land".

Do you think the team that won the Sydney olympics was better.
The India Tema under Dhyan Chand will remain the greatest ever hockey team. Current Australia are champs but they can only dream of the dominance indian hockey had under Dhyan Chand.

But rest of his post is well-reasoned. Double digit medals in Olympics? That will be great to see. A few golds in there, and the anthem being played? It would be something.

I hope we win the hockey gold next olympics, it will be huge upset, but will be awesome.

to be honest I dont see India dominating back then as a big deal , Hockey is much more competitive now and any country which has stayed at the top for so long deserves more credit

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Thursday said the corporate sector should come forward to help revive Pakistan’s lost glory in sports by extending their resources to support and groom the talented youth.

Addressing the prize distribution ceremony for the medal winners and participants of the recently held Commonwealth Games 2018 at the Prime Minister’s Office, Abbasi praised the winners for bringing laurels to the country despite meager support by the government.

The ceremony was attended by Minister for Inter-Provincial Coordi*nation Riaz Hussain Pirzada, Minis*ter for Defence Engineer Khurram Dastgir, Minister for Law Mehmood Bashir Virk, Minister for Safron, Lt General (Retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch and representatives of different Olympic associations and players.

The PM said all that the wrestlers and weightlifters had achieved was because of their personal efforts. “After a long time, someone has won medals for Pakistan,” he remarked. “Besides earning the medals, mere participation in such highly competitive events like Commonwealth Games is no less an honour for Pakistani sportsmen.”

He said these awards would be the real assets for the players for winning the laurels by competing alongside players from around 53 countries. The prime minister appreciated the efforts of Riaz Pirzada who, he said, had helped revive sports in Pakistan.

He said provision of further resources by the federal government to improve sports activities was vital. “There is no dearth of talent in Pakistan, but it needs to be nurtured,” he added.

Abbasi added that it was pleasing to know that a Pakistani industry would supply footballs for the World Cup. He told the gathering that he had advised the industry to extend its resources for improvement in the sports sector. “In the past, when Pakistan ruled the world in hockey, PIA used to sponsor it,” he recalled. “We require such powerful backing for sports today.”

The Prime Minister also urged the ministry to work further on the sports in which Pakistan could excel at the international level.

Later, he also handed over a cheque worth Rs five million to wrestler Inam Butt, who had won a gold medal in the recent CW Games, and Rs one million to Tayyab Raza who secured a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games. He also gave away prizes to other sportsmen who had excelled in the competition.

Minister Riaz Hussain Pirzada also presented a souvenir and colors of Pakistan to the prime minister.

Pirzada added that due to government’s efforts and tough decisions taken by the ministry, the sports activities have been revived in the country. He said the daily allowance for the sportsmen had been doubled while two astro turfs are being laid in Islamabad to train the hockey players.

Sports announced for Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games

Track cycling and boxing are among the events that will be included in the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, it has been revealed.

A stripped-back programme of 10 sports, announced on Tuesday, also includes athletics and swimming as mandatory - but badminton and hockey have been dropped.

The Games, last held in Glasgow in 2014 at a cost of over £540m, will be held across across four venues between 23 July and 2 August 2026.

Glasgow stepped in to host after the Australian state of Victoria pulled out because of rising costs.

A total of 3,000 of athletes from up to 74 Commonwealth nations and territories are expected to compete at the 2026 Games.

The event will also feature "fully integrated para-competitions” across six of the selected sports.

Katie Sadleir, chief executive of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF), said: "The Games promise to be a truly immersive festival of sport and celebration of culture and diversity that inspires athletes and sports – with a fan experience more accessible than ever before."

First Minister John Swinney said the event is an exciting opportunity for the people of Scotland.

He said: “While Glasgow 2026 will look quite different to previous Games, we can, and we must, use this as an opportunity to work collaboratively to ensure that this new concept brings a strong and sustainable future for the games."

What sports are included?

The CGF said the a number of factors, including "universality of participation and quality of competition" as well as local appeal were considered when deciding what sports to include.

The last time the Games were in Glasgow, 17 sports were contested - this time they will feature 10 sports:

 • Athletics and para-athletics (track and field only)
 • Swimming and para-swimming
 • Artistic gymnastics
 • Track cycling and para-track cycling
 • Netball
 • Weightlifting and para-powerlifting
 • Boxing
 • Judo
 • Bowls and para-bowls
 • 3x3 basketball and 3x3 wheelchair basketball
Organisers said they understand that fans and athletes of sports not included will be "incredibly disappointed" but that these games will not influence future inclusion.

Some sports such as cycling and gymnastics have had their disciplines slimmed down.

The cycling programme for Glasgow 2014 included mountain biking and road races but this time athletes will only compete on the track.

In gymnastics, there is no room for any rhythmic events, with only artistic gymnastics being included.

There will also be no diving competitions.

Hockey has been dropped from the programme despite a national hockey centre being built for the last Glasgow Games.

There will be no road-based events such as the triathlon or marathon on the programme - these were previously free for spectators to attend in 2014.

Rugby sevens, which was previously hosted at Ibrox Stadium is also out and there will be no racquet sports at all.

The event will feature an opening and closing ceremony and there will be some form of King's baton relay before the Games.

An estimated 500,000 tickets will go on sale for the various events, with the Games expected to be worth £150m to Glasgow.

The CGF confirmed putting on the Games is expected to cost approximately £114m.

It will pay £100m towards the bill, with £2.3m coming from Commonwealth Games Australia - who pulled out of hosting the event - as well as £2.3m from the UK government.

The balance will come from commercial revenue such as ticket sales, broadcast rights, commercial sponsorship and merchandise.

The four venues which will be used during the event will be the Emirates Arena, Tollcross International Swimming Centre, the Scottish Events Campus and Scotstoun stadium.

Organisers said these venues were "operationally viable and economically valuable".

They confirmed that Scotstoun will only host the athletics, while the Scottish Event Campus and Emirates Arena will host multiple sports.

It has not been decided exactly which sports will take place in which venues.

No additional venues will be built to keep costs low, but some upgrades such as temporary seating will be made at the four venues.

Athletes and officials will stay in “existing accommodation across the city”.

The future of the games at stake

BBC

With hardly any interest and no city willing to host. 2026 will be hosted in Glasgow with absolute shallow list of games.
All the games where non-white countries were getting medals seem to have been scrapped. The list of games is laughable.

All the sports where India was dominating have been dropped :ROFLMAO: . (45 of our 61 medals from the last Commonwealth games were from the dropped sports and that's not even accounting for shooting which was excluded in 2022 too)
I dont know why archery is in this list of dropped games, Dont remember archery being in Commonwealth games.
Boxing is getting dropped from Olympics but Commonwealth is retaining it .. ultimate brains at work.
