The curious case of Travis Head, the ODI batter – do the stats justify his rating?

Travis Head has this reputation has this ODI demon and ATG where he has only played 60 odd games. He has 6 centuries and averages a respectable 44 but there is nothing mindboggling about his stats. Yes he played a very good innings in the WC final chasing a low score in favourable conditions under lights where India's plans with the pitch backfired on them. However, how does this warrant his current rating? A certain much maligned ex-captain of Pakistan averages 57 with 19 centuries and he doesn't get anywhere near the hype on this forum. One innings cannot make anybody the GOAT, it can be the tiebreaker when you have great stats overall. Thoughts?

@RizwanT20Champ

Why is it that you don't take S/R in consideration when talking about white ball cricket? Look at the S/R by decade.... and see how many points it has gone up as compared to average. In limited overs, the winner scores more runs (S/R) you score in 300 or 120 balls than the loser. That is called S/R.

Here is another example:
Team A scores 340 runs in 50 overs and it is all out.
Team B bats 2nd and scores 339 for no loss in 50 overs. Both openers score unbeaten 150+ runs brilliant innings which pads up their average very well. But guess which team won? The team which had better S/R!!!

@RizwanT20Champ if you want to be taken seriously. Stop mentioning rizwan's name in front of every cricketer.

Its fine to downplay someone, but mentioning rizwan next to it and saying things like

Rizwan replaced Travis head

Shaheen replaced bumrah

Babar replaced kohli is laughable

He should be judged moreso on impact rather than stats. 44 average isn't remarkable by any means but he'll get that 44 in no more than 25 balls.
He is the kind of player who can frustrate you with loose wafts for low scores, but on his day there is little that can stop him. Plus he is hitting his peak right about now so those performances are coming more often.

No one rates Head as ATG, but why will you simply take average in limited overs?

Head a very good bastman in limited overs. You have to see average with SR. You have to see stepping up in ODI WC games beacause that's more important than bilaterals in current era. Teams are experimenting now with line up in bilaterals.

Also, Babar criticsm is not for his ODI game. He is a good player in ODI. His gets stick mainly due to poor SR as an opener in T20 and lack of anything when playing tests away. I don't think main criticism is for his ODI games.

Average and SR should be seen as a combination, otherwise Asif Ali with 4(2) would be the best white ball player in the world. No denying that SR is important - point is that in any era where a lot of people have great ODI stats, Head barely stands out and gets overrated whereas someone like Babar who has a far superior ODI record is maligned.

OP is very clearly trolling, Head is one of the best in the world in all formats.

But no one has called Head an ATG in all formats?
I called him a future ATG in all formats but not an individual Atg in a singular format as he won't get their.

He won't be a test atg, odi atg or t20 atg but 100% an all format atg.

How many all format players can you logically think of that are > Head?

1) Kohli (Prime)
2) Warner
3) KP
4) Gayle?

Who else? Rohit is debatable since he's been a htb for most of his life and just not very good in other formats not named odi? Travis has definitely performed better then rohit in tournaments and important rest events like wtc, BGT. Only ashes remains atm.

Yeah he’s on course for future ATG

There is no denying this.

Top 5 greatest all format player of all time.

Name the batters > Him.

I counted 4

1) Warner
2( Kohli
3) Gayle
4) KP

Who's the 5th all format batter > him
Let's look at the candidates

Quinton is rubbish in tests and de villers is rubbish in t20?

Qdk is an odi and t20 goat while de villers is a test and odi?

Yes I wouldn’t

He’s a top poster. He knows his cricket and isn’t an AI bot
I asked everyone to name 5 batters > Travis Head As an all format player

i have liated 4 who i believe are >

1) Gayle
2) Kohli
3) Warner
4) KP

I have not received a 5th one as of yet by anyone

Yeah the premise for being recognised as a proper all format batter is that ‘at no point in your career can you be a white ball liability’

Many batsmen will not fit this criteria

Quinton is rubbish in test, he's an atg in odi and a solid t20 player but he just isn't good in tests. De villers massively underachieved in t20. He should have been the first to cracked the code.

Butler didn't crack the code of test cricket and many others.

I can see Brooks ending up on this liat in the future but he ain't their yet.

Travis is objectively no 5. And will remain here.

I never said he's an odi atg or test atg ot t20 atg.

He won't reach their.

Rizwan the T20Champ > Legend Kallis, Michael Clarke in t20

That's a fact

As far great all format batters
Michael Hussey, Hashim Amla are also close.

Indians are owning Head and getting inside his head :ROFLMAO:

Its the opposite. You lot have an obsession with him because you can't handle the fact that he's owned India and is sole reason they don't have a wc 2023, wtc to their name.

Infact you did bhranhra for a groin injury and rain cause that's how terrified you are of him the moment he struck those back to back centuries.

If you want a fellow poster like me to respect Sachin, then you start respecting Travis head.

I won't tolerate disrespect from a nobody who didn't win his country anything and wastes people's time.

Yes he is owning India and that is why the series is still tied at 1-1 after 3 games are already done. That too when he is playing at home

India batted at the worst time in this test match with constant stop start rain interruptions where as Aussies got a full day to bat without any breaks. Today when they had to bat amidst rain interruptions, they got reduced to 89/7. So no...rain didnt saved India in this test match. If anything it impacted Indian batting and what the result could have been is anyones guess had we got a full game.

For all the spamming you do about Travis Head 24*7 about how he owns India, the fact still remains that the series is still tied at 1-1. The fact still remains that Australia has not beaten India in a red ball test match at home or away since 2018. The fact remains that australia has not beaten India in a test series since 2014.

All the above are facts. If Head is still owning us, I hope he continues to do it.

All I am saying is, the scoreline is still 1-1 and you have to live with that pain until boxing day. Travis Head's runs couldnt give Australia lead in this series so far. So those are worthless runs.
