Just tuning in to watch him today after a very busy week :mv the movement is there and so is the pace from what I've seen, just needs the international overs under his belt to ensure the rhythm / test fitness.

What are your early thoughts guys? :smith

Don't want to jinx him though, it remains to be seen how he can cope in the long run with regards to rigors at the Test level from the POV of remaining healthy and injury free. His work load will need to be managed carefully and SA tend to do a decent job in that regard but anything can happen as we have seen in recent times.

He's an absolute legend. To comeback after such a long layoff and still be on the money straight away is quite amazing.

Looks impressive so far.

It's incredible really, rarely will you see someone display some of their best form after such a long time out as you say. But also a lesson for youngsters to rehabilitate properly and never rush, Dale has worked so hard and is one hell of a professional

Looks like he is only human after all Red Devil :(

And he is injured yet again

I wonder how long it will take for Philander to get injured as well...

Poor guy Steyn though :(

Sad to see him go. He is in my top 5 (possibly even 3) bowlers list. A phenomenal performer especially considering he played in this era where everyone goes after the batsmen for easy conditions.

Such a shame to hear he's injured. His first comeback spell was like the old Steyn, shaping the ball away beautifully at a good pace.

Johannesburg - Proteas convenor of selectors Linda Zondi says that Dale Steyn is still very much a part of the plans heading towards the 2019 Cricket World Cup.

The 34-year-old Steyn has had a torrid time with injuries.

Having spent close to a year recovering from the shoulder injury he picked up Australia in 2016, Steyn made a long-awaited return to the national set-up in the first Test against India at Newlands on January 5.

Initial signs were encouraging and he immediately looked like he was back to his best, but a freak heel injury on day two saw his comeback screech to a halt and he was ruled out for six weeks.

The aim now will be for him to prove his fitness ahead of four Tests against Australia in March, but there is also the 2019 World Cup to look ahead to.

According to Zondi, Steyn is still part of the plans heading into that tournament.

"For now, our main focus is to see how Dale Steyn does from a Test point of view," Zondi said.

"He needs to go back to his franchise and see where he is with the white ball.

"I’m quite comfortable with the manner in which he performed when he came back.

"I’m very optimistic and he is part of the vision (for 2019). Do we go with Dale Steyn? Do we go with Lungi Ngidi? Do we go with someone else? This is part and parcel of our discussion."

The ODI squad for six matches against India was announced on Thursday, but Zondi did say that it would be re-evaluated after three ODIs.

The plan, he says, is to ensure that South Africa have given opportunities to all players in the mix for the World Cup squad by the end of the year.

Winning that tournament is a priority for this side and is coach Ottis Gibson's major responsibility.

"We need to make sure that we bring that World Cup home. We need to try by all means," Zondi said.

"I’m very confident in Ottis Gibson and I’m very optimistic.

"We have to make these big decisions as we move on, because if we don’t we’re going to keep repeating ourselves in terms of players and we don’t know where we are."

I think Steyn should retire from odi's: Mickey has forced his hand by removing Hafeez from Pakistan's WC19 plans.

Steyn will be 36 at the WC, and he can't be trusted with his fitness not to go down during a crunch situation in any of the minimum 9 games SA will play.

Really hope to see him in whites and win a few matches, but with the latest inury setback, quota targets, and the emergence of Ngidi, seems unlikely.

Huge loss to SA in the series - think the result could have been 3-0 with him there.

Regardless, SA have a very strong attack without him to the point where there has been debate for the first time about leaving Steyn out plus he had not proven his fitness either

Hampshire Cricket are delighted to announce the signing of South African fast-bowler, Dale Steyn.

The 34-year-old paceman will join the Club in June and will train at the Ageas Bowl ahead of South Africa’s tour of Sri Lanka in July, with a view to then returning as Hampshire’s overseas player following his international commitments for the final weeks of the 2018 season.

During his training programme on the South Coast, Steyn will also fill in for South African counterpart Hashim Amla, who joins the side for the first three months of the season, for a 50-over fixture against Somerset and a County Championship contest against Surrey in June.

Hampshire Director of Cricket, Giles White said: “Dale is one of the best bowlers in the world and is extremely motivated to get going after a frustrating period on the side-lines. It seems a great fit for both parties - we hope that we can help him get back to his best and we look forward to welcoming him to Hampshire.”

Steyn has enjoyed an illustrious International career since making his debut against England in 2004, claiming 419 Test wickets – just two behind Shaun Pollock’s South African record – including no less than 26 five-wicket hauls, at an average of just 22.32 in 86 matches.

One of Wisden’s Cricketers of the Year in 2013, the seamer has also been a crucial performer for South Africa in limited-overs contests, taking 238 wickets at an average of less than 24, whilst leading the attack at multiple World Cup campaigns.

The best way to catch Dale, Hashim and the Hampshire squad in action at the Ageas Bowl is with a 2018 Hampshire Cricket Membership, your ticket to up to 39 days of action this season.

CENTURION: Legendary South Africa speedster Allan Donald believes that his compatriot Dale Steyn deserves to be crowned the most successful bowler in South African Test cricket history.

Currently tied with Shaun Pollock on 421 Test scalps, Steyn needs just one more to become his country’s all-time leading wicket-taker in the format.

Donald, considered one of the great bowlers of his generation, believes that Steyn fully deserves that special moment.

“I think Dale will experience something similar to what I had in 2002 when I came out against New Zealand in Bloemfontein and had the opportunity to get to 300 wickets,” Donald told Netwerk24. “Centurion is where he learnt everything about cricket. It’s going to be incredible, especially because he is bowling so well again.

“To do it in front of his friends and family will be a great story and hopefully there will be a lot of people there.”

Donald finished his Test career with 330 Test wickets, leaving him as the fourth-highest South African behind Pollock, Steyn and Makhaya Ntini (390).

There is intent and then there is intent! Steyn looking menacing

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) today congratulated Dale Steyn on becoming the Standard Bank Proteas outright leading Test match wicket-taker of all time.

Steyn went into the opening Castle Lager Test match against Pakistan at SuperSport Park sharing joint top spot with Shaun Pollock on 421 dismissals, making them the joint 11th highest wicket-takers of all time.

Steyn then took outright possession of the landmark when he dismissed Fahkar Zaman with the first ball of his fourth over on the opening morning after Pakistan had won the toss and elected to bat.

In scenes that were reminiscent of Jacques Kallis maiden Test double century at the same venue the crowd rose as one to salute South Africa’s greatest fast bowler as his new ball partner, Kagiso Rabada, lifted him on his shoulders.

“Dale is undoubtedly one of the greatest fast bowlers of all time and we are all very proud of his achievements, not just today, but throughout his chequered career,” commented CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe. “One can never forget his wonderful all-round performance at Melbourne in 2008 when he took 10 wickets and shared a match-turning partnership with JP Duminy that enabled us to win a Test series in Australia for the first time.

“He has been a star performer wherever he has played – and that includes his feat of becoming one of the handful of foreign fast bowlers to take 10 wickets in a Test match in India at Nagpur, in 2010.

“He held the position of the No. 1-ranked Test match bowler for the best part of a decade which speaks volumes both to the longevity and the excellence of his career. He has also taken five wickets in an innings on no fewer than 26 occasions. Sir Richard Hadlee (36 times), Glenn McGrath (29) and Sir Ian Botham (27) are the only pace bowlers to have done better.

“He has also managed to overcome a series of serious injuries that would have ended the career of lesser men and I am sure I speak not only for all his South African supporters and admirers but for cricket fans around the world in applauding the manner in which he has fought his way back to his best form.

“Above all, Dale has been a role model for the way the game should be played and has been the inspiration for our following generations of fast bowlers, represented by the likes of Vernon Philander, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi.

“We congratulate him on this milestone and on a wonderful career to date and look forward to his writing the next chapter,” concluded Mr. Moroe.

Steyn is finished!!!!! Good news for us but bad news for S. Africa.

He has been highly ineffective off late. Bowling wide, short, outside off, his outswingers have been ineffective off late and in LOs, he will be taken apart quite easily by a good batsmen. Not the best times ahead for SA.

However, this doesn't demeans the greatness of Dale Steyn, who has been head and shoulders ahead of any fast bowler to have played the game between 2008-2015.

Jimmy Anderson is now definitely the best pacer in the world currently.

Still bowling at same speeds as in 2013 Series.

Man almost 6 years have elapsed and Steyn is what 35 now ?

I must say that it's Steyn vs injuries.

He got his outswing going in the second innings and if he remains fit he would get deadlier by the time second Test begins.

Could this be Steyn’s last test series? After this SA aren’t playing much test cricket in 2019.

Dale Steyn took 1-33 vs England in his comeback to South Africa’s T20I team.

Veteran pacer Dale Steyn has become the leading wicket-taker for South Africa in T20 internationals. Steyn achieved the feat during the opening T20I of the three-match series against England played at the Buffalo Park which the Proteas won by one run.

During the third over of England’s run-chase of 178, Steyn got the wicket of Jos Buttler and in the process surpassed former leg-spinner Imran Tahir’s tally of 61. Tahir scalped 61 wickets in 35 matches for the Proteas while Steyn reached the 62-wicket mark in his 45th match. Third in the list of leading Proteas wicket-takers is Morne Morkel with 46 wickets.

Overall, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga is the leading wicket-taker in T20I cricket with 106 wickets to his name. He is followed by Shahid Afrid (96), Shakib al Hasan (92) and Umar Gul (85).

Steyn already holds the record for being South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in Test cricket. The right-arm fast bowler has 439 wickets to his name in 93 Tests. In 145 ODIs, he has scalped 196 wickets.

On Sunday, the 36-year-old was playing his first match for South Africa in almost a year. Steyn has had constant run-ins with injuries over the last few years, especially after a career-threatening shoulder injury during South Africa’s tour of Australia in November 2016. Since then, he has featured in just eight Tests, nine ODIs and three T20Is.

He has already expressed his desire to feature in this year’s T20 World Cup, feeling his experience of 15 years in international cricket can come in handy to lead the Proteas quicks in Australia.
