What's new

The Haunting of Hill House

5 episodes down. It's interesting. Very well directed and keeps you engaged. So far it's a bit of a psychological thriller and has a more restrained and meditative kind of horror. The show does a lot of throwbacks to the novel but all in all it is rather different from its source material.

Good watch nonetheless. I'd recommend it.

dude how do you guys watch a whole show so fast? Do you binge watch?

I don’t usually binge, but I think you cannot really grasp this show unless you watch all 10 episodes in quick succession. Every new episode connects with the preceding one beautifully, and answers a lot of unanswered questions.

One of the best shows I have seen in a long time. Fantastic.

Last episode was pretty disappointing though. Episodes 4. 5 and 6 were the peak of the show

Is it really horror? Asking for a friend

It’s the good kind of horror where you care about the characters so you don’t want bad things happening to them. Also the few scares that are there are good because tension is built up

The scream of Nell’s ghost in the car (when Theo and Shirley were arguing) was incredible. I won’t deny it had me jumping in the bed. One of the best jump scares I have seen in a while.

Yes indeed. Can’t remember one in recent memory that startled me that much

few episodes in, watch one every night and everyday throughout the day i just cant wait till i turn the next epsiode on

Watched 2 episodes, well written and good acting but far too slow for a horror.

It’s deeper than just a standard horror. People expecting jump scare after jump scare will not like it. It is beautifully crafted slow burner. Best show after Better Call Saul.

Outstanding show, a solid 9 / 10 can't see myself giving it anything less then that. By far the best Horror story of 2018 by a country mile across movies and TV shows, episode 6 alone wins that gong which was conveyed almost via a single take.

Themes include mental illness, guilt, fear and generational trauma, all conveyed through in-depth character studies and world building which repeatedly emphasises terror, additionally there are jump scares to but if that's all you look for then watch The Nun instead. Most haunted house stories are self-contained but this was a little different in that regard and I really loved the narratives unique structure without going into too much detail. The camera work by the director was superb, always kept me on edge due to the hauntingly subtle and intense sequences. It was very evident the team who produced this put in a great deal of detail into their work even at the minuscule levels and never wasted a single scene.

There has been talk of this series continuing in an anthology format, the next show could be about a different family or there could be a haunting of a different environment rather then a house. But rest assured we are in safe hands because the director / writer Mike Flanagan is a student of the genre and a master of his craft, very few have a horror resume which compares to his impressive track record at the moment and the consistency has to be appreciated given how rare it is. Flanagan will also be directing Stephen King's Doctor Sleep which is a sequel to The Shining novel, fantastic news; especially for those who are familiar with the book, unlike Kubrick, am sure Flanagan will do Stephen King justice.

Need to get back into watching that show have heard really good things, I watched the first season or two and after that didn't get the chance to give the series another look or maybe the gaps between each season were big.

Totally unexpected :))

Going to give it a watch. Hope it doesn't scare the pants out of me though and give me sleepless nights.

Maybe I should give it another go and continue then lol.

Defo watch it till the end mate, it's a combo of a horror / thriller / psychological horror / drama / supernatural horror / mystery lol many sub genre's make it very good, it's almost as if the director combined all his vast experience into one show

I binge-watched it last week. What a heartrending serial, one that, more than anything else, makes you well up in love for your children, and vow to protect them till the end of your days. Above all else, it is a chronicle of how psychological childhood traumas shape the rest of one’s life. Also as someone who grew up in a house many in the family felt had certain presences, there was much that I could empathize with.

Flanagan is my new favorite horror director. He is so consistent. This show was fantastic. The last episode was a bit too melodramatic and sacrificed scares for melodrama but it had its heart in the right place and on the whole, the show is as good as horror gets in recent times.

Going to give it a watch. Hope it doesn't scare the pants out of me though and give me sleepless nights.

Don’t expect an all out horror series. There are many other elements to.

How often does netflix take down shows? I'm planning on getting netflix in december, will it be on around that time?

I really liked it. Interesting pilot that left you wanting more. Episodes 3 through to 6 were brilliant. Then things slowed down a bit. But the series finale was solid - unspectacular as well, although deliberately so - and tied everything up.

Guy who played Old Dad did a great job I feel. Stand out performance in the whole show IMO was Kate Siegel (Theodora).

I disagree with the best horror story of the year part. Hereditary was my favourite movie of the year

Loved every second of the show. Theo's pshychic ability was a bit cringeworthy at time, but that's me.

Hereditary was excellent and the best horror movie of the year, but across all platforms nothing touches this masterpiece, episode 6 alone terrified me more then 127 minutes of Hereditary and the show overall was a lot more nauseating in general thanks to its superb execution which always had me on the edge.

To have even achieved a 20+ minute unbroken shot which captured both young and older members of the Crain family was a monumental directorial feat in itself but I go back to this because this type of execution was what made the show so good and transition flawlessly between tragedy and terror. After that we did get more dialogue but it was important to put the puzzles together and build towards finishing stretch.

well its a tv show not a movie - TBH, there havnt been many good horror tv shows before, so its not hard to make the best one.

True, but this show stands up very well among the best shows produced right now regardless of genre and my personal Netflix Original favourite. While it has been critically acclaimed I believe that with time it will age very well among the sceptics to who naturally go in the polar opposite direction of what becomes popular at times regardless of quality

Watched the first 2 episodes and enjoyed them.

Scary at times with some great acting.

Just finished it binge watching. My God what a fantastic show! The cinematography, plot , acting was all so brilliant but what impressed me most was smaller details and how layered it was than it looks at first.

The Bent neck lady Oh my God!
Easily amongst the best I have seen.

The scream of Nell’s ghost in the car (when Theo and Shirley were arguing) was incredible. I won’t deny it had me jumping in the bed. One of the best jump scares I have seen in a while.

I cursed so loud at that scene that my mom came running straight to my room as to check what happened.

Last episode was pretty disappointing though. Episodes 4. 5 and 6 were the peak of the show

I think the last episode was pretty brilliantly done. They left so many things unanswered and I'm glad didn't resort to a cliffhanger for an obvious sequel as seems to be the trend now a days.

Finished it.

Absolutely brilliant and didn't want it to end.

As others have said, great camerawork and storyline, with superb acting.

Well worth a watch.

Mildly entertaining with a horror jump scene thrown in every now and then. It was a bore fest from episode 5 to 10. The finale was a bit pants considering how it started. Maybe they ought to have wrapped it up in 5 or 6 episodes.

Never explained the purpose of different figures that kept following them like the tall man...

Ok then I will persevere to the end, hopefully if 8 still don't get the fuss, you can explain it, if you have the time and inclination.

Okay, just watch 2 more episodes and you'll start loving it. Episode 6 specially was the bomb!

Watched the entire season.

Honestly it’s not horror. It’s more psychological thriller.

It is what was said at the start. It’s a family with PTSD and various other mental health issues such as dementia and schizophrenia.

Honestly the episodes were boring until say the last 5 minutes of each episode.

On episode 8, its okay. I am downloading the whole of Mad Men, that deserves a second outing and I deserve rewarding viewing.

I spoke too soon, episode 8 for me the best episode so far, notwithstanding the showpiece episode 6. The late 2010's Angeline Jolie nearly pulled off a Carrie Coon, let alone Regina King in season 2 Leftover, but ultimately fell just short, looking away from the camera in the last few seconds of her rantalogue. Does the portmanteau work?

Will check it out for sure, looking for a good horror series since I've really struggled to find one.

If anyone has any recommendations for horror TV shows then I'd appreciate it. Only one that I've tried watching recently was American Horror Story but it was more weird and uncomfortable rather than thought provoking and terrifying.

Finished yesterday, I think Ozark is better, Ozark has two seasons. Different genre, Haunting is a smoother, bigger budget operation methinks, one or two jump out of your skin moments but not really a horror horror. HoHH is beautifully made, the colour pallete green n blue, it's okay. Ozark is better imo.

There are many sub-genre's in horror and this can be defined as a psychological horror, it's thought provoking and creates tension through all the suspense, there are some jump scares but it's not over-loaded with them. There seems to be a stereotype that to be classified as a horror you need jump scares every second but that's just not true. Give this a go mate you will love it.

Another psychological horror would be The Returned (Les Revenants), worth a watch and some of the earlier seasons of American Horror Story were pretty decent to be fair. Then you have Stranger Things, Walking Dead, Bates Motel, Ash v Evil Dead etc but you've probably watched most of those.

Just watched it through last week at work. Normally I don't watch horror shows but I heard a lot of good reviews so decided to try it out. Glad I did because it was very good.
