London - With the January transfer window opening on New Year's Day, the Premier League's superpowers are ready to flex their financial muscles in a frenzy of spending.

Liverpool set the tone before the market had even officially begun when they splashed out a world record fee for a defender, paying £75 million for Southampton's Virgil van Dijk.

Manchester City might be running away with the Premier League title race, but the leaders can afford to add a piece or two from a position of strength, while Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham prepare to spend, spend, spend in a bid to catch their rivals:

Manchester City

On a record 18-match winning streak in the league, City have no obvious flaws, but that won't stop boss Pep Guardiola considering making additions.

West Bromwich Albion centre-back Jonny Evans, who City made two bids for in the summer window, is still on Guardiola's wish-list as defensive cover for injury-prone Vincent Kompany.

Guardiola could also go back in for long-term target Alexis Sanchez if he thinks he can land the Chile forward on the cheap in the final six months of his Arsenal contract.

Manchester United

Frustrated by United's failure to keep pace with City at the top, Jose Mourinho has already made it clear his side must big spend to have any chance of bridging the gap.

Top of Mourinho's shopping list are a left-back and a winger.

Juventus's Alex Sandro and Tottenham's Danny Rose would fit the bill for the defensive berth, while fast-rising Fulham youngster Ryan Sessegnon could be signed with one eye on next season.

Long linked with a move to United, Rose is the most likely signing as he may have worn out his welcome at Tottenham after expressing unhappiness with his reduced role on several occasions.

Arsenal's Mesut Ozil, Borussia Dortmund's Julian Weigl and Bordeaux's Malcolm are possible candidates to bolster United's midfield.

United's Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Daley Blind could be sold after falling out of favour.

Chelsea

Blues boss Antonio Conte has spent much of the season grumbling about his squad's lack of depth after Chelsea failed to land his top targets in the summer.

Lagging well behind City in the title race, Chelsea can ill-afford to waste this chance to upgrade Conte's options.

Atletico Madrid's Yannick Ferreira Carrasco and Napoli's Dries Mertens have been linked as Conte searches for a forward who can offer better back-up to Alvaro Morata than the underwhelming Michy Batshuayi

Bayern Munich midfielder Arturo Vidal, who worked with Conte at Juventus, is another player who interests the champions.

Liverpool

Having broken the bank to bring Netherlands centre-back Van Dijk to Anfield, Reds boss Jurgen Klopp might find himself most preoccupied with trying to hold onto Philippe Coutinho.

Brazil forward Coutinho has been in superb form of late and Barcelona are likely to return with another offer after having bids of over £100 million rejected in August.

Daniel Sturridge is a much stronger bet to leave, with Southampton interested in the out-of-favour England striker.

Tottenham

After a frustrating first half of the season in the league, Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will look to spark his side with a major move in midfield.

Everton's Ross Barkley is admired by Pochettino and although he rejected a last-minute move to Chelsea in August, the England international might be persuaded to accept an offer from Tottenham, who could land him for a bargain price as he has just six months left on his contract.

Arsenal

Amid mounting speculation that Arsenal players and coaches are sick of a reported lack of commitment from Sanchez, Gunners boss Arsene Wenger must decide what to do with the unsettled former Barcelona forward.

Sanchez has refused to extend a contract due to expire at the end of the season, leaving Wenger to either cash in now or lose him for nothing in June.

City came close to signing Sanchez in August and remain interested, while Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid are also potential suitors.

Wenger, who could move for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, will also receive offers for Ozil, with United and Barcelona interested in the German midfielder, who is approaching the final months of his contract.

Very difficult to say as defenders in this league are like gold dust. I think they will go abroad this time and there was a mention of a Swedish defender a short while back. I would like Villa to give the British Pakistani Easah Suliman a go but I suppose you are in a critical point of ensuing play off places this season.

Great 4-0 win today against a very good Bristol City side. :)

They should give him a go at some point, he has a bright future don't think he will stay at our club for long lol They made it 5-0 against a very good Bristol side as you say, they made up for all the lack of goals and intent in one game lol the goal difference has improved considerably and back in the play off phase. Will be hard to topple Derby, I think their best chance to get promotion is through the play offs but if am honest don't think the team is ready for the PL. Hopefully they can build on this win though and be more aggressive in the future

Strong rumours that Couts is about to leave Anfield for £140 million. Would prefer to do a deal for the summer even if it means letting him sulk like a cry baby. This will only harm his chances for World Cup in a few months time. Unless we sign a Sanchez or Lemar only then should we consider Couts leave this month. Liverpool hold all the aces in this one. Can is also set to stay until the summer at least.

Everton midfielder Ross Barkley is expected to have a medical at Chelsea on Friday before a £15m move to Stamford Bridge.

Barkley turned down a move to Chelsea on transfer deadline day in August.

But negotiations between the clubs resumed once the transfer window re-opened on 1 January.

The 24-year-old England man rejected a new deal at Everton and is out of contract at the end of this season, opening the door to a cut-price move.

Barkley has yet to play this season after having hamstring surgery following a training injury but is now approaching match fitness.

Everton manager Sam Allardyce said on Thursday the club had been resigned to losing Barkley for some time.

And now, barring late hitches, he is likely to secure a move to Chelsea.

It will mean the player is leaving Goodison Park after 13 years, having joined Everton as an 11-year-old in 2005.

The academy graduate has played 150 times for Everton in the Premier League, scoring 21 times since making his debut in 2011.

Never liked Barkley, dislike him even more now. He's gonna be benched most games at Chelsea, leaving Everton just for money. Sums up everything wrong with modern football.

The mayor of Liverpool has asked police to investigate whether Ross Barkley’s cut-price transfer from Everton to Chelsea constitutes fraud.

Barkley joined the Premier League champions last week for £15m having rejected a £35m move to Stamford Bridge on transfer deadline day in August. The move so incensed Joe Anderson, Liverpool’s elected mayor and a lifelong Evertonian, that he posted a series of tweets on the day criticising Barkley and the player’s agent, Paul Martin, while calling on the Football Association and Premier League to investigate the deal.

Anderson has now written to the FA chairman, Greg Clarke, and Premier League executive chairman, Richard Scudamore – in an official capacity and using Mayor of Liverpool headed paper – alleging the transfer “could be seen as a deliberate attempt to drive down a player’s value in the transfer market so as to benefit the player, his agent and the buying club”. And he claims to have contacted “the appropriate police authorities” with a request that they investigate the deal for fraud.

Barkley had six months remaining on his Everton contract and could have left on a free transfer at the end of this season. He also pulled out of the move to Chelsea in August having ruptured a hamstring. Anderson describes the stated reason as “a groin strain”, yet Barkley needed surgery to reconnect the hamstring and has not played this season as a consequence.

In his letter to Scudamore and Clarke Anderson writes: “I believe that the circumstance of his transfer now warrants serious investigation. There seems to me to be at least a public perception that collusion has taken place. While that may not be the case, it is in your interest that this is at least looked at to reassure fans that transfers will be monitored more closely in future and that no individuals are benefiting inappropriately.

“Football fans are often treated as the forgotten minority and the Premier League would not be the fantastic product it is without them. Those committed fans pay exceptional ticket prices to watch their team play which I believe gives them a stake in this whole process, and they deserve the right to a degree of transparency.

“I am so concerned about the circumstances surrounding this transfer that I am asking the appropriate police authorities to consider whether any fraud has taken place.”

Barkley’s £60,000-a-week wage with Everton is believed to have at least doubled at Chelsea, where he has signed a five-and-a-half-year contract. Anderson was widely criticised on Twitter last week for using his official mayoral position to criticise a transfer between two Premier League clubs. Everton have not registered any complaint over a deal they sanctioned but Anderson defends his efforts in the letter.

He adds: “As a politician – and someone who supports and rightly welcomes scrutiny under the Nolan Principles – I feel it is right that the public receive an assurance on this matter and that transfers are monitored more closely. I hope we can count on the sport’s governing bodies to provide those assurances.”

When and what time does the transfer window close? As a big Liverpool fan I want a Couts replacement(not Naby Keita)and a goalkeeper.

Alexis Sanchez could be joined at Manchester United by Arturo Vidal

Manchester United have signed Alexis Sanchez - and he could reportedly be joined by international teammate Arturo Vidal this summer.

Sanchez is now confirmed as United 's new no.7, but attentions have turned to the big business the club could do at the end of the season .

And according to Chilean journalist Maks Cardenas , United are interested in Vidal.
Sanchez and Vidal play together for Chile, and won the Copa America together in 2015 and 2016.

Vidal is currently under contract at Bayern Munich until 2019, but there are suggestions he could move on this summer.

United are said to be potential suitors, but Chelsea are also interested and the midfielder has offers from China and Italy.

Vidal was a teammate of Paul Pogba at Juventus before moving to Munich in 2015.

Manchester City are hopeful of completing a club-record £57m deal for defender Aymeric Laporte from La Liga club Athletic Bilbao.

City boss Pep Guardiola has admired the 23-year-old for some time and is willing to meet his release clause.

A deal for the French centre-back is yet to be agreed but negotiations are expected to be concluded before the transfer window closes on Wednesday.

City's current transfer record is the £55m paid for Kevin de Bruyne in 2015.

The Belgium midfielder, who joined from Bundesliga side Wolfsburg, has signed a new deal with the Premier League leaders that runs until 2023.

Laporte has been regarded as one of La Liga's finest young defenders since making his Spanish top-flight debut in 2012 but is yet to play for France's senior side.

He joined Bilbao aged 16 and has scored 10 goals in 222 appearances for the Basque club, as well as representing France 19 times at under-21 level.

His arrival would provide Guardiola with a valuable additional option in central defence.

Apart from the first-choice pair of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi, the fitness of skipper Vincent Kompany has proved unreliable and Guardiola appears to lack confidence in the ability of Eliaquim Mangala.

City remain interested in West Brom skipper Jonny Evans but unless Frenchman Mangala leaves over the next week, the Northern Ireland centre-back is more likely to move to Arsenal or Leicester.

Evans could remain at West Brom, where he has 18 months remaining on his contract, but the Baggies know he would be allowed to leave the Hawthorns for £3m in the summer if they were relegated.

Manager Alan Pardew wants to fund the purchase of a striker he believes is required to give his side the best chance of avoiding the drop.

Aymeric Laporte: Manchester City sign French defender for club record £57m

Manchester City have signed French defender Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao for a club record fee of £57m.

The fee for Laporte, yet to win a cap for France, takes spending by Premier League clubs to £252m this month - a record for a January transfer window.

The 23-year-old's arrival takes City manager Pep Guardiola's spending on defenders and a goalkeeper since the end of last season to £215.5m.

The club's previous record fee was the £55m paid for Kevin de Bruyne in 2015.

The centre-back has played 19 times for France at Under-21 level.

"I am looking forward to working under manager Pep Guardiola and trying to help the club to achieve success," he told the City website.

"It means a lot that the club have shown faith in me and I am excited to get started."

Injury concern over skipper Vincent Kompany and uncertainty over the reliability of Eliaquim Mangala led Guardiola to believe he required another central defender in addition to current first choices John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi.

Genius at work - that 4 goals in 60 minutes at Anfield has to have some reaction. For average Managers, it's about a closed door verbal bashing, may be extra training for back line & DM, may be some realignment with defense coach ....

....... for the class of Pep, it deserves 65mn ......

Another genius class move - 50mn for Mahrez. This one must be for the draw at Palace..........

Coutinho, Van Dijk transfers push record January window

Paris - Liverpool's record sale of Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona and acquisition of Virgil Van Dijk from Southampton pushed January transfer window spending to new heights, a FIFA report published on Friday revealed.

La Liga giants Barca led the way with the €160 million signature of Brazilian attacking midfielder Coutinho as Spanish clubs spent more money than in the previous seven January windows put together - their $361.3 million represented a massive 560.4 percent increase on 2017.

English clubs still outstripped the Spanish, though, as Liverpool paid £75 million for central defender Van Dijk.

Manchester City also forked out for a defender with Aymeric Laporte costing £57 million from Athletic Bilbao while Arsenal splashed 56 million on Gabon striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund.

English clubs spent $482.8 million, a 181 percent increase on last year.

The FIFA TMS platform that tracks international transfers said a total of $1.28 billion was spent despite only 15 percent of the 3,317 transfers around the world commanding a fee.

Teams from the 'big five' leagues of England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France spent €784 million in January, up 70.5 percent on the equivalent period in 2017, although outlay in the latter three actually went down.
