The Leeds United thread

Oh man, Huddersfield just gave Brentford an amazing present.

Just need to win at stoke and home at Barnsley now.

Can’t believe I might actually get a chance to support my local team in the PL.

Wth I always thought you’re based in india

Brilliant news and great to see Leeds getting some silverware again after so long. Can’t wait to see them in the PL.

Police officer seriously injured during Leeds United title celebrations

A police officer was seriously injured and a number of others hurt as thousands of people gathered to celebrate Leeds winning the Championship title. A huge clean-up operation was under way in Leeds on Monday morning after an estimated 7,000 people gathered to mark the club’s return to the Premier League after 16 years, leaving a sea of broken glass in a city centre square.

West Yorkshire police said a female officer was hit by a bottle and taken to hospital with serious head injuries. A number of other officers were also hurt along with members of the public as nine people were arrested, the force said.

Temporary assistant chief constable Oz Khan said: “Throughout the weekend, fans have gathered across Leeds to celebrate the promotion of Leeds United into the Premier League. We have continued to impress upon fans the importance of the Covid-19 government guidance and our approach has primarily remained as one of engagement and encouragement.

“On Sunday, almost 7,000 people gathered in Millennium Square in Leeds. Whilst the vast majority of fans were enjoying themselves and celebrating, there were a small minority of people who began to throw bottles at police officers.

“A female officer suffered a serious head injury and was taken to hospital for treatment, a number of other officers suffered minor injuries and a further 15 members of the public were injured.”

Khan said officers were deployed to Millennium Square at noon and began to disperse the crowds in the evening, adding that the area was cleared by 11.55pm, with nine people arrested for public order offences.

He said: “The safety of fans and the wider public is our primary concern. Violence towards police officers will not be tolerated and we deployed an appropriate police response to ensure that the festivities concluded safely. It is important to remind the public that we must not lose sight of the fact that Covid-19 is still with us and that large gatherings are still not permitted.”

Millennium Square was left strewn with discarded rubbish and broken glass and a large-scale clear-up operation began on Monday morning.

Large numbers of Leeds fans gathered outside their Elland Road ground when promotion was secured last week. There are fears there may be similar scenes at the last game of the season against Charlton on Wednesday.

During a virtual press conference on Monday, the Leeds chairman, Andrea Radrizzani, was asked if he had a message for fans. He said: “We need to be responsible. Everybody wishes to get together and celebrate and we would love to open the stadium soon. But if we’re not following the rules and we take this superficially this might cause more cases, more problems and then we might have to postpone what we want, which is to be back at Elland Road as soon as possible.

“So I really invite them to be more cautious than they’ve shown in the last 24 hours. I think what I’ve seen is not responsible at all.”

Leeds fans behaving badly, now there's a surprise.

Leeds would have been a European champion if not for some dodgy referee #1975 LeedsvsBayern

Bielsa will recruit wisely.

Big club, insufferable fans

It's the defence they need to sort out, PL strikers are different class.

Tbf Leeds style of play is similar to Liverpool in some ways. It seems the Leeds boss has been trying to take tips of the GOAT team but Leeds fans should know, we are building extended fencing in our new training ground, to keep Leeds spies away :klopp

Rollercoaster again. 4-3 v Fulham. Still around 10 minutes left.

Leeds are minutes away from their first Premier League win in 16 years on their return to Elland Road.

Leeds have scored 7 and conceded 7 in their opening 2 games, lol.

It’s absolutely thrilling to watch, but surely this all-out attacking and ultra-aggressive approach can’t be sustained if they want to stay in the Premier League longer term.

Interesting times ahead.

I was impressed with Leeds effort and determination against us but the scoreline was flattering to them, we made a couple of poor errors which gave them 2 goals.

Leeds may have scored 7 goals in 2 games but I still dont rate Bamford or any other their strikers. Norwich started in a similar fashion last year but fell apart later.

I'd like Leeds to stay up and I think they will but only due to another 4/5 clubs which are average.

Leeds will not do a Sheff or Wolves, best final position wont be higher than 15 imo.

Another good outing, 3 vital points away against Sheffield United.

The Roller Coaster season continues for Leeds United. Comfortable 3-0 win against Southampton tonight.

Raphinha keeps impressing and I really like Dallas, very hardworking guy. And to me he looks a bit like Jimmy Anderson, James

Haha yes!

We got a bit lucky in the first half imo, but it was clearly our night.

An awesome performance from Leeds in the second half, particularly the last 25 minutes or so where we could have easily scored 4-5 goals. Yet another excellent win against an established side.

There is no obvious limit to how far this excellent Leeds team can go.

What an amazing win against the league leaders and that too playing with 10 men in more than half of the time.

Even as a Man United fan, I can appreciate and respect Leeds. They play amazing attacking football, the sort of football that perfectly describes the beautiful game. We have a fraud manager in Ole who plays boring negative football and so many foolish United fans support him, because he is a club legend apparently. Bielsa is top coach and deserves so much respect for what he has done with this Leeds side.

Brilliant that from Leeds.

Really impressed with them.

I must admit I thought they'd struggle this season but they've proved a lot of people wrong.

Given the opposition and the man deficit, probably the single best win I've had the joy of watching live. I went ballistic when the winner went in, christ I was expecting a 911 call from the neighbours.

Just a wonderful grouo of players, wonderful owner, wonderful manager, its all so perfect at the minute.

Bielsa looks like staying a while longer too, a left back and midfielder this summer and who knows where we can go? I personally don't want it as it'd be a season too soon but we've half a sniff of challenging for a EL spot.

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa has denied reports he is to sign a new two-year deal with the club.

Argentine newspaper La Nacion claimed Bielsa and the club were "very close" to an agreement.

Bielsa joined Leeds in 2018 and guided them to the Championship title last season, earning promotion to the Premier League after a 16-year absence.

"That information is not real," said Bielsa, whose current deal expires at the end of the season.

"I ignore the origin. Those things, either the club can say or I can say it, we are the ones who possess the information.

"In all cases, if there was any information to give, then I would give it."

Bielsa has spent more time with Leeds than he has as manager of any other club.

He prefers to deal with contracts after seasons have been completed, with his current one-year deal signed 24 hours before the current Premier League campaign started.

Leeds beat league leaders Manchester City on Saturday to climb back into the top half of the table, and play Liverpool at Elland Road on Monday.

Victory against Jurgen Klopp's side would earn them a fourth straight win in the top flight for the first time in 20 years.

"I have always said that the dimension of the institution at Leeds is very big," said Bielsa. "The sporting past of Leeds is full of very high points.

"To win four games in a row in the Premier League - compared to all the things that Leeds have achieved - of course it will give us great happiness, but if you compare it to all the things Leeds have achieved in their sporting history, it's not so big.

"To be able to be at the height of some of their past successes, some extraordinary things need to be done and we are quite far away from being there."

Leeds will be without their suspended captain Liam Cooper for Liverpool's visit, after he was sent off against City.

Winger Raphinha (dead leg) and forward Rodrigo (muscle strain) will be assessed before the game.

Excellent 3 1 win over Spurs today.

Up to 9th in the table - what a season.

A brilliant performance.
Way beyond my expectations.

If before the season started you would have offered me a 17th-placed finish on goal difference, with it going down to the last minute of the last game of the season, then I would have bitten both of your hands off, if that is what it would have taken for Leeds to stay up.

Aim for the European places next year.
Why not?

Very pleased to see Leeds do well. They should never have been out of the top flight.

Now my lads Brentford have another chance to move up to join them....

Elland Road, by the way has one of the best atmospheres you will every experience in a football stadium.

The brilliant Wolves squad couple years ago got 57 points their first season back with ridiculous talent.

We have a shot at surpassing or matching that. Dallas, my player of the season/ He's just been absolutely incredible. What I would give for him to be born a few miles south of Cookstown

I love the play offs, especially when not personally involved!

Brentford have a shot but a tough game vs Bournemouth who imo have the best squad in that division on paper.

Your issue all season has been never replacing Benrahma. Pontus and the rest of your defence have been a solid set up all season, but when Toney's not scored you've generally struggled as Mbuemo DaSilva and co havent really hit the heights expected.

Really looking forward to these games. Brentford the favourites you'd think up against a strong Bournemouth squad.

Barnsley the real surprise package on incredible form against a faltering Swansea.

Personally hope either yourselves or Barnsley do it. Both be good additions to the league

Tah. Losing players to Albion when they went up didn’t help. But we had a fast start to this season instead of our usual sluggish one.

Last year the Bees only had to get two points from the last two games and lost them both and stumbled in the playoff.

I have more belief this year because they have won four on the bounce and must be confident, while the other three playoff teams have been patchy, especially Bournemouth who have lost three on the bounce.

Another great win and now we are 8th. Who would have believed that before the season.

Marcelo Bielsa won't get the manager of the season award but he has been absolutely brilliant and has been one of the best managers in the EPL this season.

I wonder if bigger fish will be interested in his services now.

Got to invest wisely over the summer and aim for the European places next season now. Not even that far off this season as it turns out. lol

C Palace 0 - 0 Leeds Utd

Huge game for Leeds. A win here will give them some breathing space. A draw or loss, they are right back in the relegation dog fight.

Palace have been tough to beat at home in recent matches, while Leeds have struggled away from home. However an early Leeds goal will give them a strong chance of holding on.

Poor game thus far.

Scrappy, ugly, and low on quality.

Could be a 1-0 either way.

Great call, the first goal(if there is one) will settle this!

Leeds need to go for it, 1 point isnt really enough with the remaining fixtures.

Is Bamford coming back this season? Otherwise looks tough, they clearly miss someone up top

Scrappy hard fought point for Leeds tonight.

Useful that and could be vital come the end of the season.

Ends goaless.

Leeds imo need Burnley or Everton to mess up a couple of games.

Remaining fixtures...

Home games

Man City
Chelsea
Brighton

Away games

Arsenal
Brentford

A solid point for Leeds.

Should prove useful.

34 points is not far off safety now.

Everton will lose most of their remaining games by my (tentative!) calculations.

Imo Everton and Burnley will both end up with 36-39 points.

Leeds need two wins imo, due to a shocking high negative goal difference.

Brighton at home looks like a winnable game for Leeds.

Then need a couple of draws or a win from the other four games.

Leeds defending under Jesse Marsch has got far far better. Tackles, blocks, headers, clearing set pieces — all have got miles better.

Not as good going forward as under Bielsa of course.

Yep a different style of play which was needed tbf.

Difficult to predict, pressure is now part of the matches.

Good luck to Leeds, I hope you stay up at the expense of Everton. :)

Yay, hopefully :)

Leeds go down to City — as expected.

A brilliant crowd atmosphere could not lift Leeds quite enough.

The set piece defending was not the best.

Leeds gained an admirer in Gary Neville tonight, and deservedly so. They fought very hard and played well in spells.

But not enough quality going forward to get a goal past City, and the Champions themselves were just too ruthless up front for Leeds to cope with.

There are some positives for Leeds to take forward into their final four games.

They are not safe yet, but a win and a draw may well still do the trick for them.

Played some decent football today against Man City but there was a gulf in class between the 2 sides.

Leeds still in the mix when it comes to relegation but 5 points clear of Everton.

Yes, it will probably be between Everton and Leeds for the last relegation spot. Burnley looking good at the moment and 2 out of the 4 remaining matches for Leeds are really tough.

Looks like a horrific knee injury for Stuart Dallas.

Looks like a horrific knee injury for Stuart Dallas.

LUFC: Stuart Dallas injury update

Latest on Northern Ireland international:

Stuart Dallas faces a lengthy period out of action due to a femoral fracture sustained in yesterday’s Premier League game with Manchester City.

Stuart was kept overnight at Leeds General Infirmary and will now travel to London for surgery and further tests.

Dreadful news for Stuart Dallas.

Could be 6-12 months out.

Hope he comes back strong.

After Everton's win today, Leeds are without doubt in a relegation battle after at one point looking safe.

Only 2 points ahead of Everton now.

Another disappointing performance and result against Arsenal today, littered with amateurish mistakes.

Leeds United are now hanging on to their Premier League status by a thread.

Dangerous territory with just 4 games to go looking like Leeds vs Burnley for that dreaded spot

This surprises me James. Leeds are in a dogfight with Everton and Burnley. Everton have a game in hand and Burnley have arguably the easier run-in with Spurs, Villa and Newcastle while Leeds have Chelsea, Brighton and on-form Brentford.

Leeds have a habit of pulling a victory out the bag. All three are winnable. I reckon Everton will still drop

Terrible start yet again with the early goal and Red Card, this time in a possible winnable game against Chelsea ahead of the cup final.

Injuries at critical junctions and now suspensions have made this such a tough season for Leeds, shame they have played some good football at times

Leeds look like a team who are destined to get relegated. Conceding soft goals and racking up red cards all over the place. No confidence, can’t pass, can’t win a set piece, can’t create a chance never mind bag a goal. Tonight feels like it could be The End.

A meek and miserable loss at home to Chelsea.

Leeds are looking near death.

Leeds 0-3 Chelsea

Leeds United remain in the Premier League relegation zone with two games to go after losing to Chelsea, who are closing in on sealing a Champions League spot.

Mason Mount scored the game's opening goal with a lovely first-time effort from outside the box from Reece James' cut-back at the end of a nice passing move.

United had Daniel James sent off for a dangerous high tackle on Mateo Kovacic, who had to be replaced. They later became the first team to ever receive 100 yellow or red cards in a Premier League season.

Christian Pulisic slotted Mount's pass into the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Romelu Lukaku - who earlier had a goal disallowed - scored the third goal that the Blues' dominance deserved as he took his time to hold off three defenders and smash home.

Leeds offered very little and their hopes of staying up are out of their hands. They are behind 17th-placed Burnley on goal difference but the Clarets have a game in hand.

Chelsea only need to beat one of Leicester or Watford - or hope Tottenham do not win all three remaining games - to clinch a place in next season's Champions League. But for now their focus turns to Saturday's FA Cup final against Liverpool.

Is the end nigh for Leeds?

Leeds replacing their legendary boss Marcelo Bielsa with Jesse Marsch in February has brought no real upturn in fortunes.

Ill-discipline cost them again with James shown a fully-deserved red card for a bad foul on Kovacic - who was booed by home fans as he limped off to be replaced by Ruben Loftus-Cheek. That was their third red of the season (on top of a record 97 yellows) and their second in four days following Luke Ayling's dismissal in their defeat by Arsenal.

Leeds now need to get something from games with Brighton and Brentford - without Ayling or James - and hope Burnley or Everton slip up above them.

They may be without Jack Harrison too, whose first-half knock added to the injury woes which have plagued their season.

Leeds have conceded 37 goals in their home league games this season, their second worst ever record in a top-flight campaign.

They could perhaps deal with those struggles better if they were scoring more goals - but they only had five shots at Elland Road, none on target.

Absolute horrorshow tackle from Dan James to pick up the red. Could have broke the guy’s leg — and did actually injure him enough to trigger a substitution. That one was worth two reds.

Looked awful once again.

Looks like it's between them and Burnley as to who goes down.

Yeah let the team down there. Leeds are trying to be too eager in their play, 1000mph stuff compared to their usual 100. Missed some composure at times.

Really need Bamford back, can still pull it off because Burnley arent yet clear.

Leeds with 2 red cards in 4 days means crucial starters Ayling and James are both out of the final 2 matches.

Well and truly shooting themselves in the foot, and not the time to do it.

I think it’s time for Leeds to rebuild the entire infrastructure of their club, revamp the squad, review the management and coaching. It will be easier to do this in the Championship. This likely relegation now looks imminent and it could actually be for the best.

I was hurrying to get home for the match yesterday night but when I checked the score and saw James was sent off I got so angry that I didn’t watch second half even though I was home by then.

I really had high hopes for this home fixure. You can not afford red cards against top sides.

Honestly I wont be that disappointed even if we are relegated. Better to build on the talented u23 team and come back stronger later on.

I'd fancy Burnley more at this stage to be honest, but still got my fingers crossed Leeds can do it. Bamford missing so many games has been a killer blow. Teams like Leeds need their best players available for the majority of the season, and that's not been the case.

Could be a crucial point that today. Pascal Struijk headed an injury-time equaliser to keep alive Leeds' hopes of Premier League survival after a frenetic home draw with Brighton.

A point ahead of Burnley now although Leeds have played a game more.

Burnley have some real tough ones in Villa and Newcastle. Today's point for Leeds could be the difference

A fantastic, thrilling point for Leeds.

Could be absolutely critical in the end.

You have to love the passion and effort of this Leeds team after letting in a record number of goals this season.

The later winner will likely save Leeds but Brentford at home will not be easy.

Burnley have some real tough ones in Villa and Newcastle. Today's point for Leeds could be the difference

I hope so. Let's cross our fingers Villa do their job, if they do, then Newcastle will certainly put the nails in the Burnley coffin on last day of the season.

Leeds now have 35 points.

In 9 out of the 10 previous seasons, this has statistically been enough of a points total to stay in the Premier League.

Let’s hope this is the case again.

(But I suspect that at least one more point if not three will be required here for Leeds.)

The fellow old boys Villa and Newcastle will be doing Leeds a massive favour if they can both beat Burnley.

This thing is already over if they do.

:)

I don’t expect much from our side against Brentford, I’m already mentally prepared for a defeat so high hopes for the Geordies and Villans to do the job for is. Just hope AV doesn’t get too complavent after the easy win over Burnley the other day.

I would expect the Bees at home to best Leeds on current form.

It may go down to the wire as Burnley have a game in hand, and they have a better goal difference than Leeds.

I think Brentford are in really good form and at home they will probably beat Leeds.

So that means that we need Villa and the Toon to both give Burnley a beating and ensure that the Clarets gain zero further points.

And that would mean that our thrilling last minute equaliser yesterday would be the moment that keeps us up. (it was certainly worthy of this — Elland Road exploded!)

Villa at Villa Park, and a Newcastle side that is looking really excellent both at home & away.

Burnley might lose both these games.

If they do… Leeds stay up!

What you really want is to win at Community Stadium, putting you four points clear, and not rely on middle-to-low table Villa and Newcastle to beat a side which is desperately fighting to stay up.

I agree. Leeds need to be brave and play to win on Sunday. In most scenarios now this outcome would keep them up
