The Leeds United thread

I agree. Leeds need to be brave and play to win on Sunday. In most scenarios now this outcome would keep them up

A draw at Brentford might not be enough for Leeds. That would put them two points ahead of Burnley, but one win, or even two draws would keep the Clarets up on goal difference. Leeds have let a lot of goals in.

I would not like to see Leeds drop - they are one of the great English clubs and should be in the top flight - so paradoxically I hope you win at the weekend.

Thanks Robert! :)

Tell Thomas Frank and the Bees players this too.

:)))

I made peace with relegation several weeks ago when it started to become a real and present danger. What will be, will be. I do hope that Leeds can stay up though.

Leeds United have been dealt a potentially huge injury blow ahead of Sunday’s Premier League meeting with Brentford.

The availability of key striker Patrick Bamford, who has not played a minute of first-team football since the 3-2 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers back in March, is touch and go for the trip to west London on the final day of the season.

The centre-forward’s lack of general match fitness could even see the 28-year-old ruled out of the final day clash regardless.

Regarding the England international’s current condition, Leeds Live state: “It remains touch and go as to whether Patrick Bamford will be involved at Brentford but his lack of match sharpness might keep him out even if he is deemed fit.”

I warn you, I don’t have much pull at Community Stadium :))

There is no love lost between Bees and Leeds. Leeds trolled us when they were promoted and we failed in the playoffs. We have all seen the classless Mind the Gap video.

There will be no tears shed if we relegate them I'm sure players and fans will be up for it.

Think Leeds are off down.

Everton and Burnley have just been that little bit better than Leeds at the key moments.

Could be a few more final twists to come on the last day, so let’s see.

But I do think Leeds will marginally go down.

Leeds absolutely have to win at the Bus Stop in Hounslow now, and hope Burnley don’t win too.

Or get a draw and hope Burnley lose.

But if the Clarets win, that’s it for Leeds.

Huge final day drama for both!

Big Big day for Leeds, come on lads, just defeat The Bees and at same time we will hope for The Magpies finishing of The Clarets!

Leeds one goal up at Community Stadium with twenty minutes of the season left. If they hold onto their lead, they stay up!

Disaster for Leeds as Wissa equalises for Bees in the 79th minute!

Eleven minutes to get that goal.....

YES! PL next season as well! Congrats my fellow Leeds fans! :)

Stay in the Premier League by the skin of their teeth.

Major investment needed though for next season.

WOW!!!!!!!!!

We did it!!!!

Amazing.

Well done boys.

Leeds Leeds Leeds! :)

Much as I hated seeing it Leeds deserved it. Much the better side. I'm sure they won't suffer the horrendous injuries next season and expect them to not to be dragged into a relegation battle next season.

No Arabs interested in buying Leeds?

Apparently the SF 49ers in the US (44% stake… Radz has the other 56%) are preparing for a full share grab at some point.

We shall see.

Rumours are that Jesse Marsch’s Americana appeal could be attracting a fair few high quality Team USA players this summer. Good because we need them.

Raphinha — will he stay or will he go?

I think he will go, hopefully we can get around £70 millions.

Brenden Aaronson is almost ready for Leeds as per reports and that is huge as he is a very good player.

Another big question is whether KP will stay or City will snap him up. If he goes we should definately go for Tyler Adams.

And hopefully we can land Calvin Ramsay as well. I have a feeling this could be a very good summer for us transfer wise, but we have to start early and not wait till the last minute.

£70m no way, who to- which club is after him for that much - no one, max he will go for is £45m which includes add ons of £10m which wont be paid to leeds, as it will be 50+games in a seas with 10 league goals and 5 champions league goals - which he cant do in the first season.

Hes a good player, but no one will pay that much for a right winger

Current offer from Barcelona to Leeds for Raphinha is said to be either €55 million in cash or a swap for €35-40 million + a Barca player.

Barcelona to formalise interest in Leeds winger Raphinha this week

Barcelona are expected to make formal their interest in Leeds winger Raphinha in the coming days.

Raphinha has two years left on his contract at Leeds and is not expected to sign a new deal.

One source has told Sky Sports News Raphinha would like to join Barcelona.

The 25-year-old is represented by Deco - friend and former team-mate of Barcelona boss Xavi.

Leeds fans were in a confident mood after securing their Premier League survival, with one fan joking his side were better than Barcelona, as Raphinha continues to be linked with the Spanish giants.

West Ham were one of a number of Premier League clubs who tried to sign Raphinha in the last transfer window.

Raphinha's departure would come as a blow to the Elland Road club with the winger scoring 11 goals to help to secure Premier League survival.

The joy was palpable at the final whistle last Sunday following the vital 2-1 win at Brentford as the player celebrated in the stands with his girlfriend before covering the length of the pitch on his knees in front of the opposing Brentford fans.

The Brazilian has connected with Leeds supporters since his arrival in 2020 but his ambition to play at the highest level means he could be set for a departure this summer.

This is looking very good. The respected Bielsa preferred small squads but that almost led us to relegation because of all the injuries.
If we can finance new players without selling Raph and KP, that would be top!

Rasmus is a very talented guy, he is tall and will help us in set piece situations and he just loves to attack. Moreover he has 3 years experience from CL so any deal around Euro 10M is gold for Leeds, too good to be true actually.

Just fantastic news is this.

Can Barcelona actually afford Raphinha?

Raphinha took a trip to Disneyland Korea last week and, after keeping the relegation wolf from the door at Leeds United, it was a case of off one rollercoaster and onto another.

We’re into the close season but football never stops and where Raphinha is concerned, this summer promises to be quite a ride.

The Brazil squad were in South Korea to play a friendly — where they emerged as 5-1 victors — and Raphinha’s international ascent has been so steep that wherever Brazil go these days, he goes too.

He is their overnight success story.

He took his leave from Leeds a fortnight ago with no cast-iron guarantee that he would ever be back, his future hanging on developments in the transfer market.

Leeds have spent the best part of a year fielding questions about how long they can hope to retain the electric winger they signed from French club Rennes at the start of the 2020-21 season.

They encounter the same questions about Kalvin Phillips but there has long been a view that persuading the England midfielder to stay put at Elland Road, at least in the short term, will be easier than pinning Raphinha down.

As Leeds wrestled with relegation last season, only finally fighting it off on the campaign’s final day, the general feeling was that the 25-year-old would gravitate towards bigger things once the summer transfer window opened, moving to the level he is patently good enough to play at.

In that sense, Leeds staying up has changed very little.

They are sympathetic to Raphinha’s ambition and do not intend to be unfair or obstructive if their valuation is met.

They no longer anticipate him accepting a new contract — something that appeared to be on the cards midway through the season — and although Raphinha has not directly asked for a transfer, it is no secret that he sees himself as a Champions League footballer.

The names of the clubs being linked with him prove that others see him as a Champions League footballer too, and it already feels certain that a fit Raphinha will be in the Brazil squad for the World Cup this November and December.

All the same, survival as a Premier League club left Leeds holding a helpful number of the cards.

Raphinha’s contract contains a relegation buy-out provision that would have allowed him to leave for well below his market value had Leeds gone down, and it is no coincidence that Barcelona’s interest in him intensified in the period when Jesse Marsch’s side looked doomed.

It was no coincidence either that Manchester City’s attention regarding Phillips became more formal and concerted as the odds on Leeds falling into the Championship shortened sharply.

Relegation would have made Leeds vulnerable to low offers and other clubs knew it.

As it is, they are under no pressure to consider cut-price bids or allow third parties to dictate to them.

Raphinha has two years left on his deal and Leeds will be conscious of the fact that, if he stays, his value will be considerably lower in 12 months than it is now.

But sources have indicated to The Athletic that it is likely to take a bid of between £60 million and £70 million to get Raphinha out of Elland Road — potentially four times what they paid for him less than two years ago.

Barcelona are his prime suitors and the club where all the noise about Raphinha has been coming from — the club who seemed destined to sign him for many months.

But the question for Barcelona is a pointed one: Can they actually afford this deal?

Time was when the ownership in Catalonia could rattle off a signing like Raphinha in any given window, when virtually no transfer target was impossible.

But Barcelona are a very different animal now, with debts of more than £1 billion and strict controls on their recruitment and expenditure.

A club who were forced to part with their talisman Lionel Messi on a free by La Liga’s rules last summer are no more able to flex their muscles a year on, and they face a challenging window unless they can find new streams of revenue or raise significant funds through player sales.

La Liga’s application of a tight salary cap at the Nou Camp, far below the limits placed on their 2021-22 title and Champions League-winning arch-rivals Real Madrid, have seriously limited Barcelona’s spending power.

Their situation was summed up this week by La Liga president Javier Tebas discussing whether they were in any position to acquire Bayern Munich’s wantaway striker Robert Lewandowski for a £25 million fee and annual wages of around £17 million.

“Barca know what they have to do,” Tebas said. “They know perfectly well our economic controls and their financial situation. I don’t know if they will sell Frenkie de Jong, Pedri or Pepito Perez (a Barcelona-born actor who died in the 1970s). They have to fill up their tank, which is empty. As things stand, they cannot sign Lewandowski.”

Of course, the club’s hierarchy, including president Joan Laporta, were unimpressed by those comments.

Laporta accused Tebas of “damaging Barcelona” by speaking publicly about their recruitment. But it is true they have only limited financial flexibility.

Barcelona have agreed to sign free agents Andreas Christensen (from Chelsea) and Franck Kessie (AC Milan) but, as things stand, do not have space under their salary cap to register them.

Head coach Xavi also wants Ousmane Dembele to sign a new contract but the forward has not accepted any of the club’s offers and could depart for nothing with his existing deal now up.

As Tebas said, before completing any new signings, Barcelona need to load up their coffers again.

Laporta and his fellow directors are looking at several ways of doing just that, including the possibility of belatedly entering into La Liga’s controversial CVC deal. They have the option of selling future TV rights to an investor and could raise additional cash by relinquishing stakes in their BLM merchandising arm and Barca Studios production firm.

Estimates set the potential earnings from those potential agreements at more than £650 million, although much of it would have to go towards paying off existing debts.

There is also a long list of players Barcelona would like to move on, thereby creating additional wiggle room and freedom under the salary cap. These include back-up goalkeeper Neto, defenders Sergino Dest, Samuel Umtiti, Clement Lenglet and Oscar Mingueza, midfielders Miralem Pjanic and Riqui Puig, and forwards Memphis Depay, Martin Braithwaite and Francisco Trincao.

The complication is that finding willing buyers for some or all of the surplus crowd will be difficult, not least because many of them are on large salaries.

This explains why they are open to the idea of selling De Jong, linked heavily with Manchester United recently. Though the 25-year-old Netherlands midfielder is seen as an asset, he is also a player Barcelona could more easily use as collateral.

A clearer picture of where Barcelona stand should emerge after an emergency general meeting on June 16 and the end of their financial year two weeks later.

The priority for Laporta and the directors around him is to build a competitive squad for next season and the players they want to sign for that include Raphinha and Lewandowski.

They are also keen on Manchester City’s Bernardo Silva, Carlos Soler of Valencia, Sevilla’s Jules Kounde and two more Chelsea players in Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso.

While it is inconceivable that they will land all of those names, they want to give themselves a fighting chance in the 2022-23 La Liga after finishing as runners-up but 13 points adrift of champions Madrid last month.

That Barcelona turned their attention to Raphinha in the first place is no surprise.

His agent, Deco, was a star player for them in the early years of this century and is very close to Laporta.

It was reported in February that Deco is effectively the Catalan club’s chief scout in South America, the market where he picked up Raphinha as a teenager at Avia, a club who have yo-yoed between Brazil’s top two divisions over the past decade, before moves to Vitoria Guimaraes and Sporting Lisbon in Portugal, then the switch to Rennes in the summer of 2019.

Perennial German champions Bayern have been touted as another possible destination for the winger with Lewandowski pushing to leave but they have made no contact with Leeds.

Barcelona, on the other hand, opened channels of communication a while ago but their interest has not ramped up in the two weeks since the English season finished.

Those financial handcuffs mean Barcelona’s 2022-23 squad is unlikely to be finalised until very late in the summer window.

The answer to the question of whether they can afford Raphinha might be unclear for a while yet.

Barcelona might try to dangle surplus players in part-exchange, a way of cheapening any deal for them.

But La Liga’s salary-cap rules would make that process complicated as a set percentage of money received would have to be spent servicing their debt.

Also, Leeds have pre-existing plans for the coming window and might not be interested in a cash-plus-player proposal.

Survival on the last day of the Premier League season averted an out-of-control summer at Elland Road.

With the 2022-23 calendar rejigged to accommodate a winter World Cup, this off-season is so short that Leeds are due to begin pre-season training in a matter of weeks.

At this juncture, there is a high likelihood that Raphinha will be with them when they do, albeit after some extra time off to compensate for international duty.

Where this ends remains to be seen but Leeds are in the box seat, with no reason to bend on their price, rush into anything or do anyone any favours – Barcelona, the least of all.

Two very exciting signings and the transfer window isn’t even open yet! Lol

Well done to Leeds United.

Leeds want Bayern Munich's Marc Roca as they look to strengthen midfield

Leeds United have turned their attention to signing Bayern Munich’s Marc Roca after finalising a deal for Rasmus Kristensen.

The Athletic understands that Leeds want to strengthen their midfield by bringing Roca to Elland Road, increasing the competition and support for England international Kalvin Phillips.

Roca, 25, is two years into a five-year contract at Bayern but is believed to be available for a fee in the region of £10 million. Sources in Germany say West Ham United have also been monitoring the Spaniard.

Bayern took Roca to the Bundesliga in 2020, recruiting him from Espanyol, where he started his professional career.

Roca made more than 100 appearances in La Liga and was also part of the Spain squad that won the European Under-21 Championship in 2019. He left for Germany after Espanyol were relegated.

His opportunities at Bayern have been limited, amounting to six league outings last season and nine this season, but Leeds want to widen their midfield resources before the start of the new Premier League term and are pushing for an agreement having initially identified Roca as a future target in January.

Leeds have made early inroads with their transfer business this summer, securing a £25 million deal for Brenden Aaronson from RB Salzburg within a week of the 2021-22 season finishing and wrapping up the signing of another Salzburg player, right-back Kristensen, on a five-year deal for £10 million yesterday.

As per above.

Looks like the third quality signing of the summer for Leeds is fast approaching.

City believe an offer of about £45m-50m would persuade Leeds to sell, and it is thought Phillips will push for a move once a bid is tabled. (Athletic)

I hope he leaves. With that money we can buy two additional class players.

Stupidly I thought Kalvin might be a bit keener to stay on than he apparently seems to be. He’s made it pretty easy for City to entice him over the Pennines, which will in turn reduce his fee. Lol

He’s a great local lad but no point in holding him back if he wants to leave.

Cash in.

Half hour played.

Leeds 0 - 0 Man City

There are only 6 points separating the bottom 10 teams!

Can Leeds pull off a miracle? Arsenal fans will be praying for this too :))

Not just Arsenal fans :-)

Surprised at how well Newcastle are playing without too many major signing since becoming the richest club in the world!

As for Leeds fought well today but City are just on another level! Scoring late against them is a good positive as goals will keep them up imo.

Leeds were outclassed but in the end that was not such a bad performance from them, and a 1-3 scoreline is not as terrible as many teams have experienced against City! (and will experience in the future)

We’ve scored a lot more goals than the teams around us, just need to shore up the defence, maybe bring in a couple of players in January.

This team works together, has a lot of spirit and never gives up.

Hopefully we can keep fighting and stay in the PL.

Just like last season almost half of the team is out injured, and Leeds doesn't have World class players on bench like some of the big teams.

Hoping Adams, Sinisterra, Harrison and Bamford can come back fitter and better and this year we don't have the services of Dallas either who can play whereever the managaer asks him to do.

And the defeat against Spurs before the World Cup break was very hurting, that was a match we should have won.

Yesterday's match was all about goal difference and damage control, and loved the way Haaland showed respect to the club and city after two goals.

City and next up Newcastle two very tough games to come back to, were always going to be such, but January and February are looking more favourable from a fixtures perspective and it’s also important that we sign some players in the mid season transfer window.

I think we can stay up again, as an overall package we have more in the tank to get over the line than the likes of Forest, Southampton, Everton and Bournemouth IMHO, I could be wrong tho.

Very important point away against the Magpies. We were completely outplayed in second half but defended well and Meslier was outstanding.

What a bonus point that was!

Well done Leeds.

A good end to a tough year.

I was impressed with Adams, thought he was your best player.

Gnonto also looked decent though understandably a bit raw.

Gnonto also looked decent though understandably a bit raw.

Adams has only missed two games for us since we signed him, Fulham (injured) and Man City (suspended), both at home — we basically look like relegation fodder when he doesn’t play, and then capable of squeezing out results when he does.

We are all very excited about Gnonto (and Summerville) — Greenwood didn’t play today but he is promising as well and takes a mean corner.

The clenched-fisted celebrations at the end from Leeds, whose one goalbound effort was a curling strike by Rodrigo tipped away by Nick Pope, suggested this was a point gained from their perspective.

"I feel good about coming to Newcastle and getting a draw," Marsch said. "The first half was good from us but in the second half they started playing every ball into our end.

"I'm happy with how we dealt with the crowd and the mentality to get a draw and keep a clean sheet."

Leeds United are hopeful of finalising a transfer to sign RB Salzburg defender Max Wober as early as next week, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper has reported on its website that the Whites have continued talks with the Austrian club for their captain, with a deal worth £14million in total now looking close.

Joining Salzburg for £10.6million back in 2019 currently makes Wober the most expensive player in the Austrian Bundesliga as Jesse Marsch looks for a reunion.

The Mighty Reds are on the Elland Road pitch.

Leeds need some points here.

Predictions? :)

Leeds 0-2 Liverpool HT

This has to be the easiest half of Liverpool Premier League season.

No passion, no desire and certainly no quality from Leeds. Surprising as it stands 2 point from relegation zone.

Leeds once again now have the most goals conceded in the league, joint most with Forrest - 56.

Leeds 1-3 Liverpool

Fast start to the 2nd half. Leeds got one back but Jota scored a lovely goal after a precise pass from Jones.

Leeds 1-6 Liverpool FT

Embarrassing from Leeds. Showed no fight for a team battling relegation. Leaking goals as they have done for a few years now.

Deserve to go down after this shambles.

Bielsa, Marsch, Gracia. Still Leeds just can't defend.

Leeds 1-6 Liverpool FT

Embarrassing from Leeds. Showed no fight for a team battling relegation. Leaking goals as they have done for a few years now.

Deserve to go down after this shambles.

No doubt about that. I only could watch a part of the first half before heading to Masjid, and even then I had a feeling this could end up really bad.

11 goals conceded in 2 matches, that's not PL level defending, even in Championship you can not defend like this.

Our only hope of survival could be to get 9 points against Leicester, West Ham and Bournemouth (the latter looks in good form of late). And it also helps that Forest, Foxes and Soton are as bad as Leeds lol.

Bielsa, Marsch, Gracia. Still Leeds just can't defend.

I was thinking about this the other night, nothing has changed. I really hoped bringing in a new coach would make some changes in our playing style, but we are still playing proper Bielsa football.

That works only for 30 minutes. In every match you see that Leeds are very close to get 3-4 goals in the first 25-30 minutes, but we can't even take our chances. And what happens is that after 30 minutes the players look exhausted and out of energy. Either the manager needs to make changes earlier to get in fresh legs or change the tactics.

Liverpool is a quality team, but what happend against Palace was just shocking. Leeds were in full control in first half, but you could see players got tired, but no changes made in the break and when Palace had turned the tables, he started thinking about subs. Poor manager.

Leeds United will play Southampton or West Bromwich Albion in the Championship play-off final after a thumping win over an outclassed Norwich.

After a drab stalemate in the first leg on Sunday, the home side, who finished three places and 17 points above the Canaries, took a deserved early lead when Ilia Gruev's long-range free-kick beat Angus Gunn at his near post.

Joel Piroe made it 2-0 when he headed in Willy Gnonto's deep cross to the far post, with keeper Gunn caught in no man's land, to leave the away side with a mountain to climb.

They should have pulled one back immediately but Josh Sargent was thwarted by keeper Illan Meslier one-on-one in what proved to be the only chance of note Norwich had all night.

It was 3-0 before the break when Georginio Rutter crashed a shot in off the underside of the bar after a breakaway attack.

Crysencio Summerville tapped home a fourth after the interval after Gunn had parried a Gnonto shot out to Junior Firpo, who squared for the Dutchman to roll home.

The Whites will now have nine days to prepare for the play-off final at Wembley on Sunday, 26 May as they look to secure an immediate return to the Premier League.

Comprehensive 3-1 win over Middlesbrough tonight to get back at the top of the table.

Ao Tanaka has simply been superb this season!

Handed 7-0 drubbing to Cardiff yesterday.

We are topping the table, 16 games left and many of them are tough ones, actually not a single game in Championship is easy.

Two late away wins against two top teams. 5 points clear at the top. Can we slowly start dreaming about promotion now?

I watched the second half of both games, especially enjoyed the one against Sunderland

From the bits I've seen your are head and shoulders the best team in the league, especially going forward

Burnley are the better side defensively, crazy that they have only conceded 9 goals but they probably need to start playing a bit more attacking if they want to get automatic promotion

Scott Parker has done well at Burnley, but as you say they need score more goals as well.
