What's new

The Sandman by Neil Gaiman is going to be on Netflix!

Sandman is one of the classics by Gaiman. Considered to be one of the works of the genre, has won several awards including Eisner.

Must be one for the enthusiasts, never heard of it

It revolutionised comics. Welded all mythologies and all the DC magickal characters into one milieu. The series Lucifer was a spin-off.

But it would have been impossible to film as the story is too long. Instead we can have a multi-series arc on Netflix.

What do you say shaz619?

I have heard lots about Sandman comics so it has potential to be a great tv series. I just hope they don't mess it up like American Gods which fizzled out badly after first season.

Absolutely lousy trailer , same issues with DC movies noticeable in the trailer as well.

Marvel just announced a 3 year plan and Wb-DC is remarkably behind as usual.

With humongous “literature” available and still mediocre movies and series one after the other, DC might as well stop live action all together and just go for cartoons.

DC has a very rich history with rich characters, story arcs, etc yes but where they have failed is they tried to copy Marvel cinematic universe, where all the characters are somehow connected and belong in over universe. DC characters are all in the same universe as well but their strength is stand alone individual story arcs mostly, and thats what they should have focused on rather than copy Marvel.

In my opinion, American Gods novel was a retread of certain themes Gaiman had explored in The Sandman, with all pantheons (now reduced to shadows of their former glory by the global collapse in faith) including the Norse lobbying for a chunk of psychic real estate after Lucifer gives up being King of Hell.

But it made him a global literary star so I guess it worked for him.

The big ticket DC movies weren't so great but some of their TV is good such as Peacemaker and Harley Quinn.

The Sandman is an absolute goldmine if they get it right.

I missed this earlier Robert, I don’t get notifications via the moblie version of the forum. Anyhow, this has huge potential, it’s being developed by David S Goyer who has a good reputation in the writing community and has solid experience in the comic book genre and has run his own shows to (Da Vinci’s Demons is pretty under rated imo), I see the show being in the ilk of Constantine and DVD but with not as much restriction hopefully given the streaming platform, you’re right only a multi series would have been fitting given the depth.

With Marvel going to Disney, perhaps there will be more DC content on Netflix, I know HBO Max has access to a big chunk of the Library but still

Should give it to Prime, the way “The Boys”(recently started seeing) has been made is absolutely remarkable, Prime is focused on quality than quantity and it’s visible in the execution of their shows.

If The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power succeed Prime will surpass Netflix in adaption of legacy shows/movies of fantasy genre.

Prime had pretty good DC animation content for quiet some time among other shows, The Batman Animated Series, Young Justice et al it all went to HBO Max which was unfortunate.

Prime does have a good track record though and I give them the edge especially for horror movies, what are your favourite shows there?

Super hyped for LOTR show, I was at the bog which inspired Tolkien’s writing it was gorgeous. It’s the most expensive show ever made right? it would certainly be a big turning point for Prime.

Netflix is no different now to any other organisation which gets too big and quality suffers. Am disappointed by the animation cuts to, I wonder if we will get Arcane s2 and the Castlevania spin off (athough Adi Shankar is not a part of if anymore which is a shame), some stuff disappeared of my list to

Defo looking forward to LOTR - the Second Age so pre-Gandalf.

The first ever $1B TV show….

Must say I am impressed with Sandman episode 1. Great cast. The bloke playing Dream looks and sounds just right.

I hope they do justice to it, it’s the biggest gamble they have taken by not hiring Jackson, good thing is anyone with a new fresh vision is given a huge opportunity and fans of the old ones will be very hard to impress.

Jackson did extremely well with the LOTR trilogy but messed up The Hobbit.

Episode 2 is pretty good. Sanjeev Bhaskar playing Cain, and Vivienne Acheampong as a female Lucien.

I salute the attempt to diversify Sandman’s all-white roster.

It’s a bit cutesy so far, but about to get scarier and nastier with the Constantine, Hell and John Dee stories.

Fleabag is a BBC original btw, I watched the first season on iPlayer and stopped after that.

I watched maybe 5 or 10 min of the first episode of The Boys and gave up :))

Yep, with the south asian stuff Prime wipes the floor really. I came across gems like Tumbbad, always on the look out for good horror and especially from asia.

Messed up is a bit harsh. LOTR series is one of the greatest pieces of cinema of all time, it was going to be difficult to top, we should compare similar works to it but not expect those alien like standards imo, to have released such a masterpiece in the early 2000’s was insane really.

Personally, I still found The Hobbitt enjoyable and they were good movies in their genre.

The Ring of Power should be compared to GOT which is widely regarded as the best fantasy TV series of all time and it will probably go head to head with House of the Dragon

The problem with The Hobbit was that it stretched a 240-page novel into three 150-minute films. It could have been done in three hours. So there was plenty of padding which at times struck me as fan fic rather than Tolkien. The one moment I thought was good was the White Council's attack on Dol Guldur. They even mucked up Smaug, who was a lot more forbidding in the book.

The Boys differs from the books quite a bit. The problem with both books and TV show was that - while Garth Ennis is an excellent character writer and plotter with authentic sounding dialogue - I felt soiled afterwards, like I had done something wrong and bad.

Robert let me know if it is worth watching.

Enjoying it so far. Looks great and the guy playing Dream is perfect.

Not so keen on the idea of making John Constantine a girl, but we'll see where it goes.

Hmmm. A lot of fans were excited how Corinthian will be played.

Give Boys 2 episodes, it’s remarkable.

Patal Lok among Indian shows for the gritty suspense thriller.

So noticed that most shows on Prime have a dark premise. Upload being another..

I gave it a season.

What ruined it for me is that Butcher is horribly miscast, and The Boys don't have super-strength like in the books.

Making Stormfront a woman was a masterstroke though, as was the white supremacy satire on USA.

Cain and Abel are played by British Asians, as is one of the Fates (Nina Wadia),

I do agree with that, there was some filler in there but not like it was really bad. They went for the moolah, on the negative side quality was somewhat compromised but we got to enjoy 3 movies in the LOTR universe

The development of dwarf history was interesting. Sylvester McCoy did a good turn as Radagast the Brown, surprising me as I hated his turn on Doctor Who.

The money men insisted on three films so we also got those ridiculous set-pieces on the barrels, and the dwarfs swinging around on chains fighting Smaug, and those three endless CGI single combats at the end.

Episode 3 was interesting, with Jenna Coleman playing a female version of Constantine. Elements of Jamie Delano’s Newcastle story too, and Meera Syal as a female Rick the Vic from Garth Ennis’ run on Hellblazer.

It’s great to see this stuff I read thirty years ago brought to life.

Episode 4 very good (the one set in Hell). Gwen Christie very good as Lucifer.

Episode 4 was good but 5 was the most intriguing piece in a while, extremely well done, Stranger thing level. As an adult it made so much sense.

Hopefully others are good too.

‘The Sound of Her Wings’ is considered one of the best of the comic run. Glad they did it justice.

They did the Hob Gadling story well too.

Up to episode 8. I like their Rose Walker. A less expensive few episodes after the Hellscape of episode 4.

Nice to hear the Family Man mentioned, who was shot dead by Constantine a few more nags earlier.

They will have to spend more as the story progresses and more of the gods appear.

Just finished the 10 eps, will probably see the bonus episode later.

A really remarkable series , I have to say ep 2,3 will discourage many from finishing the series but it’s worth the wait.

This could be a series for the niche audience as well, when I was young I loved Robin Williams “What Dreams may come” and also Field of dreams — I have to say Sandman is along those lines with more action and terror.

I thoroughly enjoyed the series. As you say episodes 2 and 3 are a bit flat but it kicks up a gear with the Constantine story. The galaxy of British acting talent shows how much these stories mean to so many people. Looking forward to season 2.

Gwen Christie as Lucifer!

Jenna Coleman as Lady Johanna Constantine!

I read the print off these in the early nineties and collected the second half of the run. This is ace!

I wasn’t impressed by the pilot but wanted to give the second episode a shot and I have watched it all outside the finale:

- Very atmospheric

- Aesthetically pleasing to watch

- The Sandman character has largely been nailed and is strong

However, I feel the villains in this show have been weak, they’ve used multiple here which may explain that and I don’t like the homosexuality they’ve shoved down our throats, was that a common theme in the comics?

Yeah, lesbian couples featured twice. Someone mentioned in conversation in the diner story became a major recurring character, especially in an arc called “A Game if You”.

Gaiman won a GLAAD award for it. An old GF of mine met him there. Nice fella she says, but he was obviously aware that a lot of people wanted to read him. He talked for a while, then put his Ray-Bans on and sort of disengaged.

Makes sense then I guess but it is a bit excessive. Has the show done your readings justice?

They’ve done it pretty well. It’s more diverse than the comics. Death played by a black girl for example.
