The Summer Transfer Window 2020

Jayden Bogle, Max Lowe and Oliver Burke: Sheffield United close in on triple signing

Sheffield United are close to completing the triple signing of Derby duo Jayden Bogle and Max Lowe and West Brom forward Oliver Burke.

A £15m fee has been agreed in principle for full-backs Bogle and Lowe, two of the brightest prospects to come out of Derby's academy, with Lowe due to undergo his medical in Sheffield on Sunday.

Derby boss Phillip Cocu left Bogle and Lowe out of his squad for Saturday's Carabao Cup fixture against Barrow at Pride Park. The Rams won on penalties after the game finished goalless.

West Brom's Burke, who was signed for £13m as a 19-year-old by Bundesliga side RB Leipzig back in 2016, is also nearing a move to Brammall Lane

Negotiations with West Brom have been ongoing for more than a week, but it now looks like a swap deal - with Callum Robinson heading to The Hawthorns, and Burke heading to join Chris Wilder - is close to being completed.

The talks have focused on the relative value of each player, and whether either side ought to be offering a cash sum, to level up the deal.

Scotland international Burke spent last season on loan with Spanish side Alaves, who play in La Liga. In 31 appearances, he registered one goal and two assists.

Ryan Fraser has agreed a deal to join Newcastle and is set to undergo a medical on Monday.

Callum Wilson has signed for Newcastle from Bournemouth for £20m on a four-year deal.

Wilson turned down Aston Villa and flew from the south coast to Tyneside in Mike Ashley's private helicopter to complete the deal, leaving Bournemouth after six years following their relegation to the Sky Bet Championship.

Wilson becomes the third-highest transfer fee paid by Newcastle for a player, behind Joelinton (£40m from Hoffenheim in 2019) and Miguel Almiron (£21m from Atlanta United in 2019).

Chelsea are close to signing a new goalkeeper to compete with Kepa Arrizabalaga after holding talks with Rennes over an £18.2m deal for Edouard Mendy.

Frank Lampard is determined to strengthen in goal after losing faith in Arrizabalaga, who has failed to convince since moving to Stamford Bridge for a world-record fee of £71.6m two years ago. However Chelsea have struggled to find a club capable of buying the Spaniard and although they have looked at signing Atlético Madrid’s Jan Oblak, they have lowered their sights to more affordable options.

Newcastle sign Ryan Fraser after confirming arrival of £20m Wilson

Chelsea, who have already spent over £200m on six new players this summer, have tracked Mendy for a while and had an offer of £14.2m for the 28-year-old rejected last month. However they have continued to negotiate with Rennes, who qualified for the Champions League after finishing third in Ligue 1 last season, and are close to reaching an agreement with the Ligue 1 club over a deal for the Senegal international. Nothing has been finalised yet but it is understood that Chelsea could end up paying €28m for Mendy once add-ons are included.

Lampard has already signed Ben Chilwell, Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Malang Sarr, Hakim Ziyech and Thiago Silva this summer. He has been backed by Roman Abramovich, Chelsea’s owner, and still wants to bring in defensive reinforcements. West Ham’s Declan Rice is high on Lampard’s list.

Sheffield United are set to sign Ethan Ampadu on a season-long loan from the Blues. The Wales defender spent last season at RB Leipzig and the 19-year-old is keen to show he is ready to play regularly in the Premier League.

West Ham remain hopeful of signing James Tarkowski from Burnley and are considering making an improved offer for the defender as they look to quell supporter unrest following Grady Diangana’s move to West Brom.

West Ham’s owners, David Sullivan and David Gold, are under growing pressure after the club’s captain, Mark Noble, said that he was “gutted, angry and sad” to see Diangana join West Brom for £18m last Friday.

The London Stadium club have justified the 22-year-old’s departure by saying that they need to raise funds to allow David Moyes to strengthen his defence. Moyes is a keen admirer of Tarkowski and West Ham have made a £27m bid for the 27-year-old.

However it is likely that they will need to go higher than £30m to convince Burnley to sell. While Tarkowski has said that he wants to play in the Champions League, it is understood that he will consider moving to West Ham if he feels they can help him win a place in the England squad.

West Ham are also looking for new full-backs. Bologna’s Takehiro Tomiyasu and Brighton’s Bernardo are under consideration.

West Ham have had a £27m bid for James Tarkowski turned down, with Burnley wanting almost double the Hammers' bid for the England international.

BREAKING: Everton have confirmed the signing of James Rodriguez.

Everton have signed Colombia attacking midfielder James Rodriguez from Real Madrid in a deal worth £20m.

The 29-year-old joins the Toffees on a two-year contract, with the option for a further season.

He joined Real Madrid from Monaco in 2014 after winning the Golden Boot at the World Cup in Brazil that summer.

"I am really, really happy to be at this great club, a club with so much history, and here with a manager who knows me really well," said Rodriguez.

What are Everton getting in James Rodriguez?
"I'm looking forward to achieving great things here - and winning things, which is what everyone's aim is.

"I've come here to try to improve, to get better. I've also come here to help the team to win, to play good football - entertaining football."

Rodriguez, who was entering the last year of his contract with the Spanish champions, featured 14 times for Zinedine Zidane's side last season.

It is the third time he has been signed by Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti, having joined the Italian at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich.

"I'm convinced, with Carlo and his technical staff, we can achieve big things and one of the big reasons [I signed] was the presence of Carlo Ancelotti," Rodriguez added.

"I have enjoyed some great times with him previously at two different clubs. That was a massive reason to come here."

Ancelotti said: "James, as everyone knows, is a fantastic player with a lot of quality and a lot of ability to make assists for the strikers.

"He's really excited about the project of the club and the fact we want to improve. He was really excited to sign and I didn't spend time to convince him - he was already convinced."

Rodriguez is part of an ambitious Ancelotti rebuilding programme at Everton, with the Toffees having signed Napoli's combative Brazil international Allan and agreed a fee for Watford's French midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure.

The Colombian has been marginalised under Zidane at the Bernabeu and was allowed to miss pre-season training to sort out his future.

Ancelotti, who became Everton boss last December, has been the driving force behind the deal, with Rodriguez attracted by the idea of working with the Italian once more.

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers confirms talks with Roma for Cengiz Under

Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers says the club are in talks with Roma about signing Cengiz Under.

The 23-year-old Turkey winger joined the Italian club from Istanbul Basaksehir in July 2017.

The left-footed Under has made 88 appearances in all competitions for Roma, scoring 17 goals.

"He's a very, very good player. There have been negotiations with the club [Roma] and we're hopeful there," said Rodgers.

"We need a different kind of attacking player to help out at the top end of the pitch.

"It's clear we have pace and power, but I feel we need more football in there."

Foxes winger Demarai Gray, 24, has one year left on his deal with the club and has yet to sign a new contract.

He was left out of the squad which beat West Brom 3-0 in Leicester's first game of the season.

"I always analyse players in training and pick the squad. He's in his last year and hasn't signed another deal."

Wolves have signed Portuguese right-back Nelson Semedo from Barcelona in a deal that could be worth £37m.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo had been seeking a replacement for Matt Doherty, who moved to Premier League rivals Tottenham last month.

"It isn't often that we have the opportunity to sign a world-class player from a world-class club," said Wolves executive chairman Jeff Shi.

Semedo, who has signed a contract until 2023, is the third permanent signing by Wolves during this transfer window, following the arrival of Fabio Silva from Porto and Ki-Jana Hoever from Liverpool.

If Wolves pay the full £37m then Semedo would become the club's record signing, eclipsing the £35.6m they paid for Silva.

When asked why he chose to join Wolves, the defender told the club website: "Last year they did a very good season and it's a very important team in England, in also Europe. I hope this year we can do very good things.

"Coach Nuno is a very good coach. He did very good things here in Wolves, and in other teams too. For sure I'm going to learn a lot from him."

Rhian Brewster: Sheffield United set to sign Liverpool striker

Liverpool forward Rhian Brewster is set to sign for Sheffield United in a club record deal worth £23.5m.

The package for the England Under-21 international includes a buy-back option for three years and the Reds will get 15% of any sell-on fee.

Brewster, 20, helped England win the Under-17 World Cup in 2017 and scored 11 goals in 22 appearances while on loan at Swansea City last season.

The Blades are yet to score in three Premier League games this season.

Several English top-flight clubs - including Aston Villa, Brighton, Burnley, Crystal Palace, Fulham and Newcastle United - had inquired about signing Brewster on loan.

He won the Golden Boot with eight goals at the Under-17 World Cup, playing in an England team alongside Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden and Borussia Dortmund forward Jadon Sancho.

"I can't confirm that it's all been done but we have been in negotiations with Liverpool for a while and discussions between the player and the club are still ongoing," said Blades boss Chris Wilder on Friday.

"There's nothing to announce at this minute but we are down the line.

"It is an area we need to improve and that's not being disrespectful to the strikers we already have here. We need competition in the group."

Brewster has recovered after suffering a serious ankle injury in January 2018 which ruled him out for the rest of that season.

The forward has made four Liverpool appearances, three in 2019-20 cup competitions and once as a substitute in the penalty-shootout defeat by Arsenal in this season's Community Shield.

Sheffield United's previous record signing was the £22m they paid for Norwegian midfielder Sander Berge from Belgian side Genk in January.

Blades forward Lys Mousset is out injured while Oli Burke is yet to get off the mark since he arrived as part of a swap deal with Callum Robinson, who has scored twice for this new side West Brom this season.

David McGoldrick is seen as a link-up player and only scored twice in the Premier League last season.

Wilder's side, who are 19th in the Premier League, have a tough run of upcoming fixtures. They travel to Arsenal on Sunday before a trip to champions Liverpool on 24 October and they then host Manchester City a week later.

Wesley Fofana: Leicester City complete signing of St Etienne defender

Leicester City have completed the signing of Wesley Fofana from St Etienne for a fee that could rise to £30m.

The 19-year-old has signed a five-year deal with the club having completed a medical in Germany and will join up with the Foxes ahead of their Premier League fixture against West Ham on Sunday.

"I'm very happy to be here. I've watched Leicester City closely since they won the title and they're a top club in the Premier League," Fofana told the club's website.

"I know I will learn a lot from the players and the manager here, which is one of the main reasons I came. I can't wait to get started."

The French club confirmed the transfer on Tuesday evening, stating it will be the largest transfer fee they have ever received and that the uncertain economic environment caused by the coronavirus pandemic was a major factor in accepting the bid for the teenager.

Fofana, who has been vocal about his desire to come to the Premier League after a breakout season in Ligue 1, was also a target for West Ham, but they are now exploring alternative options.

"The decision to sell the player was taken collegially by the management board and the shareholders," a St Etienne statement said.

"ASSE accepted Leicester's exceptional offer, especially given the uncertain economic context caused by the health crisis."

Leicester have also reached a financial agreement to terminate the contract of Adrien Silva, who is set to join Sampdoria on a two-year deal.

The midfielder, who joined Leicester for £22.5m on Deadline Day in the summer of 2017, is set to fly into Italy to finalise the move to Claudio Ranieri's side.

Leicester's priority this summer has been a centre-back and they have also been in regular contact for James Tarkowski from Burnley, but the signing of Fofana is likely to end their interest in the England international.

Fofana becomes Leicester's third signing of the summer, following the arrivals of full-back Timothy Castagne from Atalanta and Turkey winger Cengiz Under on loan from Roma.

Premier League clubs have spent £1.218bn on signings during the transfer window.

But who will be the happiest with their business? BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty takes a closer look - and you can have your say at the bottom of this page.

Big winnersOllie Watkins started to repay his £28m transfer with a hat-trick in the 7-2 thrashing of champions Liverpool

Aston Villa only secured their Premier League status on the final day of last season - now the club's owners have backed manager Dean Smith in ambitious fashion to make the most of that escape.

And it has not just been with incomings because arguably the most important Villa deal of this window was the one which saw their captain and most influential player Jack Grealish sign a new five-year contract after months of speculation linking him with Manchester United.

The biggest signing was record buy Ollie Watkins, brought in from Brentford for £28m potentially rising to £33m, the 24-year-old well known to Smith from his time in charge at Griffin Park.

Watkins scored 25 goals for Brentford last season and has already made his mark with a brilliant hat-trick in Sunday's remarkable 7-2 win over champions Liverpool that continued Villa's perfect start to the season.

Emiliano Martinez brings stability to the goalkeeping position after his arrival from Arsenal while the final flourish was a surprise loan deal for Chelsea's Ross Barkley, offering real threat and creation in midfield alongside Grealish. He was on target, along with Grealish, in that astonishing demolition of Liverpool.

Matty Cash has made a fine start at right-back following his £16m move from Nottingham Forest while Lyon's Bertrand Traore is another attacking option.

Everton's transfer policy since billionaire owner Farhad Moshiri started bankrolling the club in 2016 has been a scattergun shambles under managers Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and Marco Silva along with directors of football Steve Walsh and Marcel Brands.

The arrival of James Rodriguez at Goodison Park has shown the pulling power of Carlo Ancelotti

The arrival of Carlo Ancelotti has not only brought a focused strategy but an A-list manager whose presence alone attracts players who would not, in other circumstances, entertain a move to Everton.

This means that despite finishing 12th last season, Ancelotti has been able to sign Colombian superstar James Rodriguez from Real Madrid, the outstanding Brazil midfield man Allan from former club Napoli and Watford's Abdoulaye Doucoure.

Ancelotti has rebuilt Everton's midfield, which was a matter of urgency, while also adding two highly promising young talents in left-back Niels Nkounkou from Marseille and Norwich City's England under-21 central defender Ben Godfrey in a £25m deal.

He has also brought in Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen from Roma on loan to put pressure on error-prone England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

It has resulted in a magnificent start to the season, topping the Premier League table and winning all seven games this season, reaching the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Everton have also offloaded high earner Theo Walcott to Southampton and Moise Kean's unproductive spell has ended with a loan move to Paris St-Germain.

All in all, this looks like a brilliant window.

Tottenham Hospur have been a bit of a slow burner but an opening weekend defeat at home by Everton focused minds and kicked Spurs into gear. They now look in impressive shape.

Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Wolves and Southampton respectively represented solid additions but the business hit a higher gear with the spectacular loan deal to bring back Gareth Bale from Real Madrid, also joined by Bernabeu team-mate Sergio Reguilon, the Spain left-back who helped Sevilla win the Europa League.

Manager Jose Mourinho also got the cover for Harry Kane he so desired via a loan deal for Benfica's talented Brazilian striker Carlos Vinicius, who scored 24 times for the Lisbon giants last season.

Mourinho and Spurs can regard the window as a job well done.

Arsenal left it late but the closing moments made this a significant and successful window.

The £45m signing of Atletico Madrid's Thomas Partey right on deadline will have increased the levels of optimism around Emirates Stadium. The powerful midfielder was one of manager Mikel Arteta's top targets for the whole window.

This comes on top of the addition of Willian on a free transfer from Chelsea and Lille central defender Gabriel Maghaeles, who was one of the most coveted young players in Europe before signing for Arsenal in a £23m deal.

This all comes after the most pressing piece of business of all was concluded, namely getting their world-class striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to sign a new three-year contract.

The deal for Partey, though, was another cause for celebration.

Premier League spending slightly down but still far higher than rest of EuropePartey time, baklava and Gunnersaurus goes - deadline day on social mediaBig losers

While rivals such as champions Liverpool, who signed Bayern Munich's Champions League winner Thiago Alcantara and Diogo Jota from Wolves, Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs all seemed to have structured transfer policies, Manchester United were once again a shambles.

The seemingly endless pursuit of top target Jadon Sancho seemed to hinge entirely on a belief Borussia Dortmund were bluffing about a deadline to get the deal done then dropping their £100m-plus asking price.

Given United and executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward's less than assured touch in the market, it was a surprise to no-one that neither happened, leaving them scrambling around before homing in on veteran Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani. The 33-year-old left Paris St-Germain in June and has been available for months, so the deadline day signing looks suspiciously like an expensive vanity purchase.

United clearly need another central defender but none was forthcoming, while midfield man Donny van de Beek, a £40m signing from Ajax, has not been able to get into the team.

Porto left-back Alex Telles arrived along with teenager Facundo Pellistri from Uruguayan side Penarol in Uruguay, while Amad Diallo from Atalanta, will join in the future,

United had months to line up their deals this summer, to answer the suggestions they are way behind their rivals when it comes to working the markets - only to end up with business that does not make them look any closer to a title challenge than they were last season.

Poor.

West Ham United's fans have every right to vent their frustration at co-owners David Gold and David Sullivan at the end of another largely fruitless transfer window.

West Ham's hopes of signing James Tarkowski from Burnley came to naught

There was the furore, including public criticism from captain Mark Noble, surrounding the decision to sell exciting 22-year-old forward Grady Diangana to West Bromwich Albion for £18m followed by a succession of missed targets.

Burnley resisted their attempts to sign defender James Tarkowski, while moves for Chelsea defenders Antonio Rudiger and Fikayo Tomori floundered, leaving Moyes with scant reinforcements - painful given that the Scot's signings so far have all looked excellent purchases and real value for money.

The deal for midfield man Tomas Soucek was made permanent at £20m but he was there last season while the other arrival was his fellow Czech Vladimir Coufal from Slavia Prague for £6m.

Moyes' early work, including the purchase of Jarrod Bowen from Hull City last season, shows he can be trusted in the transfer market but how far can he take West Ham when the club struggles to get deals over the line?

He could still delve into the Championship but make no mistake this has been a window lacking ambition and support for the manager.

It's been a tough old window for Burnley, a club working on a very tight budget who, understandably, have never been able to fight it out financially alongside so many of their Premier League rivals.

Manager Sean Dyche has cut a frustrated figure in recent times and his mood will not have been helped by three successive defeats.

Burnley is a club that has to live within its means but you can understand why Dyche might have liked more ambitious backing after miraculous work guiding The Clarets to 10th last season, especially after the loss of the solid and experienced Jeff Hendrick to Newcastle United on a free transfer.
