Usama Mir captured the headlines recently as the highest wicket taker in the Super8 Twenty20 tournament when he captured eleven wickets and played a pivotal role in his side Sialkot Stallions' victorious campaign. A leg-break bowler, Mir at 19 years of age has an impressive record with 12 wickets in 9 T20 matches and has already impressed fans and selectors.

Regarded by many as a fine prospect for a place in the senior team, Mir spoke with PakPassion.net about his passion for cricket from a young age, his fine performance in the Super8 Twenty20 tournament, his admiration for his Sialkot Stallions captain Shoaib Malik and his future aspirations.

IMG-20150523-WA0006.jpg

PakPassion.net : In Pakistan youngsters usually want to be pace bowlers or batsmen, what made you want to bowl leg spin?

Usama Mir : My brother Saad and I have always been very fond of cricket and started playing from a very young age in our house. However our house was small so there wasn’t enough room to run up and bowl fast so my parents told us that if we wanted to play cricket in the house we would have to bowl slowly. At that time I would just bowl slow and try to spin the ball, but it was only later that I realised I had been bowling leg spin all that time.

PakPassion.net : So what about the progress from playing in your house to being noticed by regional selectors?

Usama Mir : Zahid Fazal the former Pakistan batsman spotted me bowling at a local match and he told me that I should go for trials and join the Amir Waseem Cricket Academy in Sialkot. I owe Zahid Fazal a lot, firstly for spotting me and then for recommending me to the former first class cricketer and left-arm spinner Amir Waseem. It all began seriously for me once I joined the academy as I went from a raw young kid who bowled a bit of leg-spin to becoming a professional cricketer and I cannot thank Amir Waseem enough for all of his hard work and guidance.

PakPassion.net : Tell us a bit more about the Amir Waseem Cricket Academy?

Usama Mir : It’s the academy in Sialkot which produces most of the first-class cricketers from the region. It has produced cricketers like Shoaib Malik. It’s a fantastic environment and a great place to learn about cricket, providing you are prepared to put in the hard work.

PakPassion.net : What do you feel are the key attributes a good leg-spinner needs to have to be successful?

Usama Mir : I think leg-spin is a unique art. Having said that though, like any other facet of cricket you have to be prepared to put in a lot of hard work. With bowling leg-spin you have to accept that some days it won’t go perfectly but you have to remain positive and keep on working on your bowling. I think it’s all about bowling lots and lots of deliveries and trying to perfect your varieties, as if you don’t have the variety then you won’t be successful.

PakPassion.net : Who have been your cricketing role-models and heroes?

Usama Mir : When I first started playing cricket my hero and role-model was Shahid Afridi. I tried to copy his bowling action and also copy his batting. I tried to copy everything about Shahid Afridi. But then when I started to play for Sialkot region at various levels Shoaib Malik became the cricketer that inspired me and the cricketer who guided me in terms of tactics, game awareness and technical aspects of the game.

PakPassion.net : Watching you bowl at the recent Super8 Twenty20 tournament, it seemed like you have all the varieties a leg-spinner needs. Do you feel that’s the case?

Usama Mir : The leg-spinner has always been my natural delivery and one that I could bowl from a very young age. The googly is a delivery that I’ve had to work very hard on to bowl and to improve. It’s the delivery that didn’t come naturally to me and one that my coaches and I have spent a lot of time improving. I’ve felt comfortable working on one delivery at a time during my early cricketing years and once I learnt the googly, then I moved onto the flipper and I’m continuing to work on the flipper to this day. I feel that hard work and patience are very important.

PakPassion.net : With all due respect, nobody would have predicted that you would be the leading wicket-taker at the Super 8 Twenty20 tournament. Why do you think the tournament went so well?

Usama Mir : The team management and skipper Shoaib Malik really instilled a lot of confidence in me and gave me a lot of self-belief. Ahead of the tournament they said to me you are our best bowler and we want you to bowl like you are the best bowler. Shoaib Malik really boosted my confidence and whilst I’ve played under a lot of captains, I have to say that Shoaib Malik really is the best captain and a great man-manager.

PakPassion.net : As luck would have it, you may not even have played in this tournament if other Sialkot spinners had been available?

Usama Mir : That’s so true. That’s the beauty of cricket, you sometimes get an opportunity when you don’t expect and you have to make the most of that chance.

PakPassion.net : Sialkot Stallions are almost unbeatable in Twenty20 tournaments. Why do you think they are so successful in this format?

Usama Mir : Shoaib Malik deserves a lot credit for this. He gives the players a lot of game-awareness and gives everyone an important role in the team and also gives all the boys a lot of backing and confidence. Ahead of this tournament a lot of people were saying that the Lahore Lions team is much stronger and would win the tournament with ease, but we won as went into the tournament with a positive attitude, strong game plan and a great team spirit.

PakPassion.net : Sialkot seems to be producing a lot of talented cricketers at the moment, why do you think that is?

Usama Mir : There is a lot of talent in the region and we are blessed to have that talent, But there is also a lot of hunger and passion to succeed in cricket at the highest level. In addition, there is a lot of competition for places even in club teams, but above all there is the mindset of hard work and commitment. The boys from Sialkot know that nothing will come easy for them so they are prepared to put in the effort rather than just hoping that they will succeed.

PakPassion.net : Mukhtar Ahmed is someone who has started his international career so well. He must be an inspiration to a lot of cricketers in Sialkot?

Usama Mir : I’m absolutely delighted for him, he’s a really nice guy and someone who deserves a lot of credit and success. I was praying that he succeeds and I’m really pleased for him. He’s such a hard working cricketer who has performed well wherever he has played. He has shown the Sialkot players that if you really put your mind to it, you can go on and play for your country and do well.

PakPassion.net : There’s a lot of competition in the spin bowling department for Pakistan at the moment. Are you up for the challenge?

Usama Mir : I think if I get the opportunity to play for Pakistan then I will succeed. Yes there is a lot of competition at the moment as Pakistan is blessed with a lot of spin bowlers of a very good standard, but I think if you want to play for your country then you have to be able to see off the competition. My main focus at the moment is to continue to mature as a bowler, improve and then see where that leads me. The target is of course to play for Pakistan, but I feel that I need to focus on one step at a time.

PakPassion.net : You never really made the headlines at Pakistan Under 19 level, why was that?

Usama Mir : I was close to being called up for the previous Under 19 World Cup, but unfortunately I was banned for a year, which meant I had to miss the Under 19 World Cup. If that hadn’t happened then it was likely that I would have been picked for this tournament.

PakPassion.net : Why were you banned?

Usama Mir : There was some confusion over selection issues and rules. There is a rule by the PCB that you cannot play Under 19 cricket for more than three seasons and what happened was that I played in a match where I bowled a couple of overs and it was my fourth year at that level. I had no clue about that rule at the time and neither did any of our officials or coaching staff.

PakPassion.net : You’ve become very well known due to your performances at the Super 8 Twenty20 tournament, what are the short term and long term plans now?

Usama Mir : I’ve been working with Mushtaq Ahmed at the National Cricket Academy in Lahore recently and that will continue. That is a fantastic opportunity for me to work with such a great leg-spinner. I’m not the finished article, there are areas of my bowling that I need to improve upon and with the help of Mushtaq Ahmed I am looking to eradicate those errors. Waqar Younis has also been to watch me bowl and has been keeping a close eye on my bowling at the NCA and he’s spoken to me also which was a great boost for my confidence.

I’m looking forward to the domestic season this time around as I feel that I am an improved bowler and a more confident one. I want to succeed not only in the twenty over format but also in one day and four day cricket too. The ultimate goal is to play for Pakistan and I hope I can achieve that goal one day.

Very well held interview by pakpassion .
Very logical and mature answers by usama who is only 19.
Looks like a hard worker . I am impressed a lot by his bowling . If he keeps improving further , keeps doing hard work , stays fit and disciplined then I feel inshaAllah within next 2 years he will play for pakistan . Best wishes and prayers for the talented leggie . In my view the best legspinner in pakistan . Usama if you are reading keep working hard . May Allah bless your hardwork .

Good interview, seems like a good, hard working lad, who is driven to improve himself and succeed.

He sure loves Malik. :))

He's a good talent. Was very impressed with him in the recently concluded domestic tournament, troubled most batsmen.

For a change its not hyperbole to say that we have lots of talent coming through in the spin bowling department.

But will we ever select them?

He was probably overshadowed by Raza Hasan but now that shadow is gone. Needs to make good use of it.

He actually looks 19 for once. ;-)

If and its a big if because of an incompetent board and moronic selectors but proper guidance, tough A tours and a well organised domestic competition we could dominate some teams with our spinners alone in the coming years.

Seemed like a level headed young man with a lot of ambition.

I liked the fact that he mentioned hard work and a lot of effort needed in future and that he is far from being the finished article.

great talent , good interview and really glad to know Mushtaq ahmed working with him
same should be with ashgar , he also need to be part of NCA youth talent

Young leggie Usama ready to make his mark in Pakistan cricket

A pair of 19-year-olds played a major part in helping Sialkot Stallions win the Super 8 T20 Cup tournament in Faisalabad prior to the arrival of Zimbabwe cricket team for the first full-fledged international series in Pakistan since the ghastly attack on the Sri Lankan Test team in March 2009.

Of the two young guns, Gujranwala-born opening batsman Nauman Anwar who scored 276 runs in the domestic competition, was rewarded with a Twenty20 International debut in the second game of the series against Zimbabwe while leg-spinner Usama Mir narrowly missed out selection.

Usama was the leading wicket-taker in the Super 8 T20 Cup with 11 victims to emerge as one of the brightest prospects in Pakistan cricket.

The unassuming Usama, talking to Dawn in an exclusive interview from Lahore on Tuesday, said that he felt ‘over the moon’ during the Stallions’ triumphant campaign.

Currently attending the Emerging Players Program at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Usama indicated that he has one major aim in his cricketing life. “Like all youngsters, my dream is to play for Pakistan and do my country proud. It’s a philosophy which I’ve planned for myself. The road to fulfil that ambition is definitely not going to be easy,” Usama revealed. “I’m also aware of the hurdles which will come in the way. But if the focus remains, I’ll get there sooner than later.”

Unusually tall for a spinner, Usama considers his 6’3” frame as a distinct advantage. “For a slow bowler, height can become another weapon. It helps in getting deliveries to bounce awkwardly from the good-length spot,” the Sialkot-born spinner says. “Leg-spin is my primary weapon because since a very young age it came naturally to me. With the passage of time I have learned to master the googly and other varieties as well.”

Usama candidly admits being a big fan of the retired Australian legend Shane Warne and said that he used to copy his delivery stride.

“When I was growing up, I watched Warne more closely than other spinners. And such was my admiration for him that even I took up being like him when bowling. Warne had a nice walking sort of a bowling stride and I used to do almost exactly the same,” Usama pointed out. “But when the coaches started teaching me, I changed my run-up too according to what they [coaches] thought would help me become a better bowler. Now I have adopted an angular stride to the crease which is quite different to Warne’s action.”

Usama credited his emergence as a cricketer to ex-Pakistan batsman Zahid Fazal and former first-class player Aamir Wasim who enjoyed success as a slow left-armer in the PCB domestic tournaments. “Without the efforts of these two gentlemen, I wouldn’t have taken up the game. Zahid initially spotted me while I was playing in a local match and encouraged me to appear at the trials and join the cricket academy run by Aamir Wasim in my hometown,” Usama said. “It was on Zahid’s recommendation that Aamir enrolled me at his academy. If you ask me I simply have no words to thank Aamir because without his support and guidance I wouldn’t have achieved anything at all.”

Since he lives in Sialkot, Usama is a huge fan of Shoaib Malik and has high praise for the former Pakistan captain. “Shoaib has made a major impact in my professional career. The young players like me are fortunate that someone of his calibre is around to help us out. Sialkot Stallions are the best T20 side in country because of our captain,” the youngster says. “Despite being the senior-most player in the team, Shoaib backs us all the time and treat us like younger brothers. From the team’s perspective, the camaraderie in the Stallions’ ranks is unmatchable and this is a key element in our success over the years.”

Usama, who has played just two first-class matches so far for Khan Research Laboratories, hopes to be an all-rounder. “I take my batting very seriously and at the club level I have scored a lot of runs. In fact, people may not know that I was padded up to go in at No 3 during our T20 Cup match against Abbottabad Falcons [last month]. But Shoaib opted for Bilal Asif who played an amazing innings [114 from 48 balls] to set up a big win.”

Saj, any truth to the rumors that he/Mohammad Asghar are on the radar for SL ODI series?

Good to see promising youngsters doing well in tourneys such as T20 these are type of players we need to nurture for the longterm for international side.

I'd be surprised so soon.

Need some more exposure and experience I reckon.

It is always a pleasure to see a leggie in action. Hope he makes it to the Pakistan team. :inti

Superb interview from pp, very professionally done. Best of luck to usama, a very exciting prospect.

Thanks.

Definitely one to keep an eye on in the future.

PCB coaches are already working with him and he's been earmarked as one for the international setup.

Surprised that he isn't selected as he is a proper allrounder who can hit a few. Not to forget he has done very well in T20's with the ball.

Very anxious to see Usama, Kamran & Sohail Khan play 1 or 2 matches before squad is announced.

Khi should rest Sohail tanveer and Iftikhar next game and pick Usama Mir & Sohail Khan. Will they rest Sohail tanveer ?

Kamran Ghulam should replace Ashar Zaidi in Islamabad united team.

Have missed the replay.

That looked out to me.

Saifullah Bangash did not appeal properly.

Was that out ?

it was out, or veryyyyy close

It was that straighter one, looks very promising but was bowling a bit shot. I hope they give him more chances. Still not sure one can judge a leggie in a t20 league.

He should have been in pakistan a squad. I hope mickey arthur mentions sadaf hussain and atif jabbar as well :D

Beautiful googly.

Turn and bounce and zip off the pitch.

Usama Mir is a brilliant leggie.

Have been saying it for an year.

Bounce he gets from that height and high arm action.

Turns his leggies & googlies sharply.

Bowled 2 quality flippers to Russell.

Malik why did u give him chance so late after 2 matches :( :'(

Precisely. Now he would be unnoticed for a possible selection for the Asia cup and WC squads. Unfair for him, although he has been quite impressive on a flatter track today.

At the point of release needs the arm at a slightly bigger angle to get the side spin for the leg break.

He is raw but has a lot of potential irrespective of his showing here , gets the most bounce out of all the spinners on show , beautiful google , doesnt turn the leg break as much or may be scared to slow it down and flight it yet on this small ground.

Looks better than most young spinners in the PSL tbh. Needs some polishing but he's alright. Nice wrong'un

Lovely bowling by Usama once again.

Had Mushfiq caught that than it would have been 2 wickets in an over and match would have probably turned in favour of KK.

Usama has grip over every variation and he has got all the variations.

Those who say he does not turn his leggies should see the drop chance of Sarfraz. And mind you its a flat track not conducive enough for turn.

I think Pakistan can try him as a leg spinner in limited overs cricket i.e. ODI & T20Is, and persist with Yasir Shah in Tests..

he looks good but am not sure if he able to control his line and length as well as he needs to just yet, seems to be spraying it a little.

I second you.

Along with Asghar & Zafar he should be in the mix too. Odi cricket could be his strongest format as a player.

I repeat. Much better than Yasir in ODIs and T20s. Yasir is amazing in tests and should just okay this format. We always make the mistake of playing test players in ODIs even though they are rubbish eg Younis, Sarfraz and Yasir.

Asghar and Usama Mir are in a different league. They are the only bowlers who have dominated basically. Had Usama played for Zalmi or Quetta he would even bowled more aggressively, but till now he hasn't have had the runs.

I still can not believe that these guys can not even make it to the T20's of Pakistan. Look at Australia trying out Zampa in ODI's.

This guy needs special attention, coaching and handeling by BCB and in 2-3 years , he will be a world class player and an asset for the National team. He is very young, tall, athletic and above all a genuine wrist spinner. Should replace Yasir, when he will start showing signs of declining, or even compete with him in few years.

Stop this over hyping

I didn't see him today but from what I have seen of him,he will find it very difficult to turn his leg break.

The spinner I liked the most in the tournament. I think with 1 or 2 more seasons of domestic cricket he can become a very good option.

Does anyone know why NBP played him at No.3 in FC? Didn't get many overs either.

1 Good Season Boy.

Current Fc wickets v poor for Wrist Spinners.

Let us see they make flat dry cakes for Asif this season or not ;)

Don't worry you'll get your chance after youngster beauties younus, malik, hafeez, afridi and company retire in next 10 years or so you'll be debuting at raw age of 35 be sure

Big Blow.

Won't be playing QEA Trophy.

Back Injury can be make or break for Legspinners. He was expected to make a return to Cricket in National T20 Cup but his back injury did not heal. Now he misses out on QEA aswell.

Raza Hasan got a back injury aswell which ruled him out of cricket for 1-2 years. When he came back from that injury he could not turn the ball as sharply as previously.

Why do our cricketers state the obvious? Of course your aim is to represent Pakistan.

Good development.

Now Haris & Usama need to play remaining List A matches of the ongoing One day Cup.

Big fan of this guy, hope he does well and is selected for our LO team. Desperate for us to find a leg break bowler, Usama can be the answer.

Shadab, Irfan & Usama will compete for 1 Spot.

Who would you pick ?

I want one of them to be in squad of 16-17 for Champions Trophy aswell as WorldCup.

Never seen irfan or Shadab, but apparently Shadab can bat as well. I'll go with what I know I'll take the chance with Mir and use him in the middle overs as a wicket taking opition. In an era where a lot of the modern players struggle vs spin, a leg break bowler is a must in LO formats.

Good point. You are growing up as a poster & analyst :)

Usama Mir performance watch thread

He was/is my favorite youngster coming out of Pakistan. I had big hope from him but a back injury has kept him away from cricket this season. He has decent PSL1 and i hope he does something special in PSL2. He is the ideal legspinner we need in limited overs cricket. Let's see how he performs after coming back from a dangerious injury.

I hope he performs well and make it to Pakistan team. Legspinners are very important in LOIs these days as they take crucial wickets in middle overs. Almost all good teams have one.

he is good but i think he is supplementary pick and cannot play unless some one is injured from main squad.correct me if i am wrong

How good can he bat? Gone are the days of a specialist spinner in LOI cricket. These days teams prefer spinners who are good enough to play a cameo knock of 20(12). If he is a complete no-hoper with the bat then he can eye Shah's spot in test cricket, that's about it.

He can bat. He mentioned in an interview that he is working on his batting as well. He hit russel down the ground for four on a yorker last year. Plus he is a brilliant fielder.

Due to his height he is harder to hit.

I would say more suited to the one day or t20 format.

Test just requires more skill from a leggie.

From what I have seen, not a huge turner or the ball.

One of my favourite youngsters from Pakistan. Hope he can make a comeback. Want him to prove himself and earn a spot in our LO team.

A leg spinner is goldust in modern odi cricket.

He's quality but it's not just Usama. We have three world class prospects in Zafar, Irfan and Usama. Any team would love to have one.
