With Shehzad's emergence and Hafeez doing ok it looks like a bleak future for Taufeeq.

Yea. He should be respected and treated in a good way. I don't remember any other player except IK who retired on a high Note !He should be respected and remembered in good light, just like other retired players.
A retired cricketer is like a dead relative/friend. You only look to remember the good in him/her.
Toffee was a quality Test opener with excellent technique against pace. His performance in 2003 SA testifies that. Unfortunately, he was mistreated big time in Tests and should have been a fixture in the team from 2003-2010. Now, he is finished and time to move on.
I don't appreciate the way these teenagers who started watching cricket in 2009 patronizing and disrespecting him by calling him rubbish and all that. It is not his fault that he is over the hill now.
Post-Saeed Anwar, arguably the finest Test opener who was always professional and never moaned about getting mistreated. An unfulfilled career and I feel very bad for him but now it is our job to show him respect he richly deserves.

I like Taufeeq the guy but he as a batsman is awful. Can't play swing and can't play spin. Take minnows out and you will see his real average.
When did you start watching int. Cricket? Your posts suggest it must have been not long ago.
Anyone think he was a really underrated player? He should have played a lot more from 2003-11.

Excellent post and totally agree! He was definitely unfairly treatedHe is extremely under rated and unlucky player. Unlucky in a sense that his early days cut path with the four years of Captain Inzi, when you have to be in a close circle to be safe. Guy had a difficult time against those Aussies (Probably got a pair in the game Hayden alone beat PAK by innings), but over all he was quite a decent opener - anything better in 15 years between Saeed & Azhar. I believe, he averaged over 40 as opener when PAK dumped him after 2005 India tour - since then, between 2011, he played one Test at Leeds.
But what cost his career was a selection blunder - PAK kept picking him in ODIs when he was not a LO player - played like 25 ODIs at 25/50 range stats, many of those against ZIM (after 2003), IRL & Kenya. Worse was that, PCB selectors dropped him from Test squad, based on ODI performance.
He still averages close to 40 as Test opener and could have been a 10K+ runs Test opener with around 25 hundreds (Finished with close to 3K runs from 40+ Tests and 6-7 hundreds), was a brilliant slip fielder (back-up WK as well) - a correct opener who could play with straight bat through V. I think, TU should be an example for players like Imam, Sami - instead of trying to be an all-round player, both should focus on becoming a Test specialist.
I liked Toffee but 5-6 K test runs @ 38-42 was his max potentialHe is extremely under rated and unlucky player. Don't think he was average if players like rizwan are world classJust found out that Shan broke Toffe Kumar’s score of 135 in SA.
how did the high scores in SA land into the pockets of two average openers?
Please can we stop polluting every thread with Riz bashing.Don't think he was average if players like rizwan are world class
Rizwan
37 matches - 3 x 100 and 10 x 50
Taufiq
44 matches - 7 x 100 and 14 x 50
Shan
40 matches - 6 x 100 and 10 x 50
Was just good as rizwan if not better
It's not about criticizing Rizwan if he’s considered the benchmark and is regarded as world-class. Others with similar or better stats and comparable contributions to Pakistan cricket should be held to the same standard. Please can we stop polluting every thread with Riz bashing.
On topic Toffee was decent against pace but didn’t have much clue against spin.
Taufiq was a very decent Pakistan Test cricketerJust found out that Shan broke Toffe Kumar’s score of 135 in SA.

Proud momentHe’s Pakistan’s Niel McKenzie
Hafeez was probably the Worst batsman of them all in test cricket but his all round status after his 2010 comeback made him a decent player. Both him and Yasir hameed were much better players than Salman but, Imran farhat, hafeez. A shame both of them never fulfilled their potential. Both were treated pretty unfairly too.
Hafeez was decent after 2010, but still was a liability away from SC conditions. He had no right to play more games than Yasir Hameed and Taufeeq Umar.Hafeez was probably the Worst batsman of them all in test cricket but his all round status after his 2010 comeback made him a decent player.
