"The way Babar is going, he will be the number one batter in all formats" : Mohammad Yousuf

Mohammad Yousuf speaking to the press:

"We remain busy all year round and don't get much time to work on our issues; This is a conditioning camp and we have period of 10 days where we can work to fine tune ourselves which will be beneficial to all"

"Fawad Alam, apart from the recent series against Australia, has performed well in all other series, he has also been names in ICC's Test team of the year"

"One or 2 series or innings can go bad for anyone, when we used to play we saw that even the top players went through such periods"

"In the previous series, most of the scoring was done by the top order, I Cant say much about the middle-order's performances in series from the past"

"If we look at the series against Australia, we chased down a record 349 run target in ODIs with most scoring done at the top with Babar and Azam doing most of the work"

"But it is true that only when each batter performs at his batting position is when the team will play at its best"

"As professionals, we have to be prepared to play in all sorts of weather but yes, it will be hot during the series against the West Indies but we are all professionals but the guys are working on their fitness, and if we are fit then the weather will not matter that much"

"Yes, I used to talk and praise Asad Shafiq and Haris Sohail, whilst Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad was excluded from the side before my time so I cannot say much about them; Coming to Asad Shafiq, I feel his performances in First-Class are not to the level that is expected; Especially, when you want to make a comeback, you have to play exceptional cricket so that you can displace someone who is already in the side. I still believe that Asad Shafiq has it in him to make a comeback. However, if he is not able to perform well in FC, then its upto the captain, coach and selectors to decide on his inclusion and not in my domain"

"I feel that if he can perform well in FC and hits 4-5 hundreds then it will improve his chances but he will need to perform really well to make a comeback"

"Babar Azam is a world-class player and the way he bats with focus, passion and discipline, he is improving day by day, his performance is showing us that he is only moving up and I have no doubt that the way he is going, he will be the number one batter in all formats"

"The way Shan Masood is playing is amazing and I don't think any Asian player has scored 2 double-hundreds in county cricket or has got close to 1000 runs in such a few number of games; His performances are visible to our selectors, coach and captain as well; I am sure he will be considered for selection although he is already in the Test side"

"In terms of Shan Masood playing in ODIs, we have to see what slots are available for him as we have good openers and Babar is playing at number 3, so all these things have to be considered when the selectors look at this matter"

"I worked a lot with Abid Ali before his health issues, but I haven't had a chance to work with him after that as I have been busy but from what I have seen of him in the nets recently, I feel he will be back to his former self"

Some interesting observations from the Pakistan legend.

Regarding Babar, he is spot on.

MoYo put on the spot regarding Asad Shafiq but I like the way he never gets too defensive when asked questions by media.

Babar is a world class player right now , he needs to win a WC for Pakistan to come in the all time great group.

Yeah if only he can compete alone with the other teams lol. Cricket is a team game, you can be a world beater but unless you have a good team around you, winning worldcup is not possible. Babar needs to form a good ODI/T20 team around him to have a chance of winning World Tournaments, if not, only thing he can do is score loads of runs himself.

Thankfully Yousaf has looked past Asad Shafiq now.

It's time to induct someone from the newer batch in the middle order. Kamran Ghulam would be my pick for Tests.

Babar Azam has said “it’s a dream” to become the No.1 ranked batter in all three formats and match Dinesh Karthik’s call that the Pakistan captain can create history.

Veteran India batter-keeper Karthik was speaking on The ICC Review when he tipped Babar to become the first player to be ranked the No.1 batter in all three formats.

Babar is currently the No.1 batter in the MRF Tyres ICC ODI and T20I rankings, while he is a career-high No.5 in Tests behind Marnus Labuschagne, Steve Smith, Kane Williamson and Joe Root.

“As a player it's a dream to become the No. 1 in all formats and, for that, you have to focus and put in hard work. It's not like if you are the top player in one or two formats, you go easy,” Babar said.

“If you are to become No.1 in all three, you have to keep yourself fit and on track. There is back-to-back cricket and the gap is less. For that, you need to be extra fit.

“It's something I am preparing for. It's going well in white-ball and hopefully, I will be able to do well in Tests too."

Babar was speaking ahead of the rescheduled Pakistan and West Indies ODI series to be played on 8, 10 and 12 June.

The three ODIs were postponed last December due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the West Indies camp following their T20I series.

Pakistan claimed a 3-0 clean sweep in those T20Is and continued their strong white-ball form with a 2-1 ODI series win at home against Australia.

Babar was the star of the three ODIs against Australia with two tons and a half-century as he averaged 142.5 and scored at a strike rate of 116.8.

"As a team, as a captain, you go into the series thinking about a clean sweep, whoever the opponent is,” Babar said.

“We went with the same thought against Australia, to play tough cricket and dominate. The intent is the same against West Indies, but it's not like we are underestimating them.

“They also have the capacity to give you a tough time as, on the day, they are a dangerous team. You can't take them easy."

The Pakistan and West Indies ODIs will be played in Multan with matches starting at 4pm local time to avoid the worst of the extreme heat.

The three ODIs are part of the Super League with both teams chasing crucial points to earn a top-eight finish and automatically qualify for the Cricket World Cup 2023, with West Indies currently in sixth place and Pakistan tenth.
