Shoaib should know that times have changed. There should be a standard for fitness and thankfully Arthur has brought it here.

Akhtar sounds a bit outdated in his comments. Majority of international teams are using yoyo test now.

As for seaming tracks, most ODI pitches around the world are flat decks now where 300 is par. 230 is well short of a good total against NZ's batting lineup.

He's saying yoyo test shouldn't be the only examination to evaluate fitness.

Yo-yo tests are perfectly fine if you want to gauge the fitness of an athlete. Shoaib's time had 90% useless fielder's who wasted that 0.1 of a second in the field which made all the difference. Cringe-worthy statements from former and current players alike are an usool in Pakistan cricket. If anyone wants a simplified version of why fitness is very important, watch Kohli's interview in that breakfast with champions show. Explains it very well.

New Zealand pitches for LOI's are possibly the flattest pitches in the world. Add to that small boundaries and lightning fast outfields, 320 would be par.

Some good points as well.

Our bowlers get unfit far too often, its an issue which needs to be looked at.

Not surprising from a chronically indisciplined and unfit cricketer who ruined much of his own immense talent with his lazy insubordinate attitude.

yoyo test doesn't mean he'll be a good fielder. I do agree with Shoaib, match fitness is more important than yoyo test.

Thee is some merit to his comment but it’s misplaced.

Yo-Yo rest is a good bench mark for batsmen and fielders since they need general athaticabilty for their job, frankly traditional Cricket does not offer much, for that Yo-Yo or similar tests are helpful. In general Cricket batsmenship is about technique, reflexes and temperament, fielding has become important in modern era with T20, that’s why fitness has become more important.

Keeping bowlers fit or bowler faster for longer period of time is a whole different challenge, frankly Cricket has not address that for most part. In other fitsness domain they have picked from other sports but bowling is unique to Cricket, fast bowling is a different beast. No team or country has master this art yet, fast bowlers are injury prune now and they where 70 years ago as well... T20 present a different challenge, you have to bowl fast and that too instanteously, 4 overs are more like 10 overs of test...

Switching formats is also not as easy as it sounds for bowlers. Constantly playing cricket is much easier for batsmen but it shortens the career of bowlers a whole lot, regardless of fitness. Bowlers job is lot more Laborious.

To be frank what he says is partly right. You cannot determine a bowler is fit or not by just using yo-yo test. A bowler needs to be fit for a extended period of time. He not only needs to bowl 10 overs, he needs to be on the field for 50 overs as well. How do you know if someone has the stamina to last that many overs and is able to bowl with sustained speeds even in the 50th over? yo-yo is only a part of the fitness test. There needs to be other tests which actually test the bowler in match situations as he mentions. We have seen bowlers being picked after passing all the tests but when it comes to match situation, struggle to bowl even 10 overs.
