Zaka Ashraf has been in the news a lot since his appointment as the main man at PCB.

From statements about not going to India, to working with players on their contracts and also lot of travelling for the Asia Cup etc, he seems to be making a lot of noise but will it amount to anything more than just noise?

He wants to stay in the news and wants to show that I am working a lot for Pakistan cricket and players.

If Pakistan performs well in the 3 ODIs against Afghanistan or the Asia Cup, then all his statements and activities will be appreciated, otherwise...

I thought his comments today were unnecessary - "We have world-class batters and bowlers on the side. We have a good combination and I don’t find any reason why we should not win this trophy.”

"I have great hope that with your efforts and hard work, Pakistan will win the Asia Cup. After securing victory, I am sure you will carry this momentum and confidence in the World Cup, bringing the World Cup trophy back home."

That surely just adds to the pressure the players are already under.

I couldn't agree more. I am sure he means well, but he sounds almost BCCI-esque arrogant here

I agree. ODI festival is going to start in this humid weather. Cut your national heroes some slack

Good part is that most of the players do not have good command on english

And his reign could well be a short-lived one!

It has come to light that the country's election commission communicated with the government, urging the removal of all political appointments to ensure a fair and unbiased electoral process. Subsequently, the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) corresponded with the Prime Minister's Principal Secretary, identifying Ashraf as one such political appointee.

An IPC note has said, "Reference Election Commission of Pakistan letter No F-2(1)2023-Coord-vol dated 15th August, 2023 and Guidelines Notification No 2 (1)/2023-Coord dated 15th August, 2023 (Annex 1):

"In pursuance of para(g) of the notification ibid: "To ensure immediate termination of services of all heads of institutions headed appointed on political basis and to send all such cases to the commission for approval of termination or otherwise.

"Two cases pertaining to Ministry of IPC are submitted for consideration and appropriate orders please:

(i) Mr Zaka Ashraf (PPP), chairman, managing committee, Pakistan Cricket Board

(ii) Peer Syed Ahmed Nawaz Shah (PPP), chairman, Federation Land Commission (sic)."

The IPC letter, seen by Cricbuzz, was signed off by its secretary Ahmad Hanif Orzakai.

Well, rumours that he's already on his way out!

The crazy world of Pakistan cricket strikes again.

And his reign could well be a short-lived one!

This is so funny. These mafia idiots wont stop until literally everything in PK has turned dust. Will Sethi come back? will the Generals chose their own man, will there be another clown rewarded for his services to regime change.

Sethi boasted and had told the PCB employees on his final day that he will be back in a couple of months time.

I guess BCCI officials coming to Pakistan could be a huge achievement for him?

The development comes after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) sent invitations for the event to ACC and ICC members.

Unfortunately, in Pakistan, whoever comes into the government brings their own person to the PCB chairman's position.

It is not considered whether they truly deserve this position or how much knowledge they have about cricket.

A top source in the know of the development told Sports Tak that the officials in line to travel to the neighbouring nation for the continental tournament are Board President Roger Binny and Vice-President Rajeev Shukla, who have directly been nominated by the BCCI.

The duo will go to Pakistan on September 4, via the Wagah border. This will happen after the India-Pakistan match, which will take place on September 2.

Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf will know his fate just 48 hours before the Asia Cup 2023 inauguration in Multan. After Pakistan Election Commission asked for Ashraf’s removal as the Pakistan Cricket chief terming him as a political appointment, Ashraf moved the Lahore High Court against the removal.

The Lahore HC held a hearing on his plea and called all the concerned defendants to appear before it on Monday (August 28), just two days before Asia Cup 2023.

In general, the Pakistan Cricket chairman is nominated by the Prime Minister who is also the chief patron of the board. As Pakistan is going for general elections, the election commission asked for the removal of all political appointments. Zaka Ashraf was nominated by Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) which brought him into the Pakistan Cricket is no longer in power. Ahead of the elections, Pakistan is under a caretaker set-up.

“The court has summoned the secretary of the Election Commission, federal government representatives and other parties for the hearing on 28th June,” PTI quoted a source.

The judge asked Ashraf’s lawyer when the Cricket Management Committee is intended to hold the elections of PCB? The source said the judge expressed concerns that until now the Pakistan Cricket Board has not issued any election schedule. However, Ashraf’s lawyer assured the election schedule would be made available to the court by Monday.

During the hearing, the lawyer accused the secretary of the ministry of IPC that he wanted to bring his own person as PCB chairman.

“Anything can happen next week even though the Asia Cup launches in Multan on August 30,” the source said.

Since Ramiz Raja was removed as Chairman in December last year, the board has been run by two back-to-back CMCs without an elected head.

He was speaking to the media every day, but has now gone quiet.

I wonder if this is the beginning of the end.

In a desperate attempt to save his chair, head of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee Zaka Ashraf has called an emergency meeting on Sunday on the eve of his hearing in Lahore High Court.

Ashraf, who was appointed in June by the previous government to hold elections of affiliated units, has moved the High Court to obtain a stay order against any decision by the government and election commission of Pakistan to remove him.

Although the PCB has made no official announcement about the meeting, insiders say all the CMC members were called and told about the meeting.

First he needs to save his seat. Overall it's just the same politics that is happening and happened in the country. We are just seeing its reflected in PCB.

I believe near $35 million dollars is the amount Pakistan Cricket Board will be getting from ICC each year so somebody needs to be in the chairman seat to take care of that now, wouldn't it? :sneaky:

Are you sure it's $35mn each year? I thought it was over the cycle

Allowing one person to work in a position diligently is essential for them to make a meaningful impact. Here it seems like a game of musical chairs is being played in PCB.

A three-member Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) delegation will reach Pakistan tomorrow via Wagah Border amid the ongoing Asia Cup 2023.

According to the details, BCCI President Roger Binny will lead the delegation which will also feature BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla on their important visit to Pakistan.

The BCCI delegation will discuss matters of mutual interest with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials before watching the Asia Cup 2023 fixture between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan at the picturesque Gaddafi Stadium.

The delegation will also be attending an official dinner at the Governor’s House.

PCB has always been a joke of an organisation and nothing seems to amuse most of the sensible Pak fans anymore.

If Zaka is removed then who'd be the next chairman in this musical chairs game?

According to a news report, Zaka is pushing for ACC to play remaining games completely in Pakistan...

As they say in Urdu "bolney mai kiya harj hai..." (costs nothing to say anything you like...)

It’s refreshing to see BCCI officials actually look genuinely happy being around PCB officials.

Certainly they must be pleased because they have effectively dampened the joy of the Asia Cup. Every match is being affected by rain.

Well, they are also under the pump by their own fans. People are desperate to watch Pak v India contest. Don’t think the Indian’s like being bullied by a Pakistani seamer the way Shaheen has had their number in recent history. They want to see Shaheen slayed (with the bat that is)

Ministry of IPC urges PCB to conduct early elections.

The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) has issued a directive for the prompt conduct of elections for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which is currently being managed by an interim setup led by Zaka Ashraf.

In a letter issued by IPC, addressed to Election Commissioner PCB Mahmood Iqbal and Adjudicator PCB Justice Retired Tassaduq Hussain Jillani, the IPC conveyed the need for early elections to elect the Chairman of the PCB and urged the Election Commissioner and Adjudicator to provide their full support and cooperation in this regard.

“I am directed to refer the subject captioned above and to 4th September 2023 addressed to Chairman Management Committee, PCB regarding completion of the primary assigned tasks of formation of the BoG and conduct of early elections of the Chairman, PCB. It requested the Election Commissioner and Adjudicator to extend full support and cooperation in this matter," the letter stated.

According to media reports, a previous letter dated September 4 mentioned the formation of a second interim management committee on July 5, 2023, chaired by Ashraf, with the purpose of organizing elections.

Despite repeated requests from the Ministry to outline a roadmap for the nomination of Board of Governors (BoG) members and the election of the PCB Chairman, there has been a lack of action and willingness on the part of the management committee to conduct these elections.

It has come to light that the Election Commissioner of Pakistan had previously directed the removal of all institution heads appointed based on political considerations to ensure transparency in general elections. As a result, the Ministry of IPC sought clarification from the Prime Minister’s office regarding Ashraf's appointment.

The Ministry's call for elections coincides with the PCB dealing with other urgent matters, notably the finalization of the squad for the upcoming World Cup, following the team’s disappointing performance in the recent Asia Cup.

It doesn't matter who the PCB chairman is, he likes to stay in the news. Whether it's Zaka Ashraf, Najam Sethi or Ramiz Raja.

PCB hosts one-day cricket clinic at Gaddafi Stadium

The Pakistan Cricket Board in its efforts to diversify cricket has arranged a one-day cricket activity at Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore to encourage representatives of all sections of our diverse Pakistani society to pick up the game.

The activity, which took place today aimed to provide an opportunity for these promising young players to hone their skills, receive coaching from renowned coaches, and experience the facilities available to top cricketers of Pakistan.

Pakistan Cricket has a long and proud history of being an equal opportunities employer, and participants of all walks of life have featured for the national team. Wallis Mathias, Duncan Sharpe, Mohammad Yousuf and Danish Kaneria are just some of those examples. The PCB continues to strive to provide opportunities to all Pakistanis as it aims to expand their outreach programmes.

It’s a part of PCB vision to expand the game among all communities who haven’t shown ample engagement towards cricket. As part of the PCB's ongoing commitment towards equity, diversity, and providing an inclusive environment in the cricket circle, today's activity reinforced PCB pledge to draw players from various communities across Pakistan.

To reduce barriers to entry, as many as 21 players were invited up to feature in a comprehensive training program that included net sessions, fielding drills, and different sessions on game strategies. The participants had the privilege of learning the skills of the game from academy coaches who shared their knowledge and insights to inspire the next generation of cricket stars.

PCB Management Committee Chairperson, Zaka Ashraf: “Cricket is a unifying force in Pakistan, and it is crucial to ensure that the sport is accessible to everyone, regardless of their background. This day camp at Gaddafi Stadium is just the beginning of our efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity in cricket. We hope that through such initiatives, we can discover and develop hidden talent from all corners of the country.”

PCB will continue to explore opportunities to expand such programs to reach all communities.

Zaka-led PCB hired 60 high-profile officials in three months

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), under its incumbent interim Management Committee, hired over 60 high-ranking officials during its first 90 days in office, Dawn learnt on Sunday.

The appointments were made despite the committee’s mandate being limited to running day-to-day affairs of the PCB leading to the board’s pending elections.

However, led by chairman Zaka Ashraf, the PCB roped in eight directors and 25 consultants against handsome packages over the last three months. According to sources, the board is paying approximately Rs150 million to the recruits.

Sources said that the said recruitments were challenged in the Balochistan High Court in contempt proceedings held on October 2.

PCB lawyers sought more time to submit an explanation, and the two-member bench has ordered the PCB to submit complete details of the appointments, length of employments, and remunerations by October 16.

According to insiders, the issue of said appointment also came under discussion during third meeting of the Management Committee held in Lahore on October 1.

Minutes of it’s second meeting held in Karachi on August 27 read: “COO opined that agreeing to such an arrangement would mean making a long-term appointment; however, he was concerned that the functioning of the MC was currently limited to day-to-day operations.

“COO explained that based on a strict view, the MC should not be awarding contracts longer than one year; however, even if a more lenient view was to be taken, the tenure could be a little longer than a year; however, it would remain subject to challenges.”

The board’s media and communications director Aalia Rasheed — one of the Zaka-led committee’s high-profile hirings — refrained from commenting on the issue, saying that the matter was in subjudice and that “it would not be appropriate to comment on it at this stage”.

Good! Even BCCI members were given royal treatment by the PCB when they travelled to Pakistan recently.

The PCB has written to Capital Development Authority, Islamabad for operational possession of three cricket grounds: Diamond Cricket Ground, Marghazar Cricket Ground and National Cricket Ground. This aligns with the reenactment of the PCB Constitution of 2014 and emphasises the PCB's dedication to grassroots cricket development.

Additionally, the PCB has contacted the Ministry for Sports & Youth Affairs Sindh to acquire operational possession of several other cricket grounds for similar purposes:

DCA Ground, Sukkur
DCA Ground Makli, Thatta
DCA Ground, Mirpurkhas

Zaka Ashraf meets former Test cricketers
Lahore, 24 October 2023:

PCB Chairman Management Committee, Mr Zaka Ashraf, met with former Test cricketers Aaqib Javed, Mohammad Yousuf and Inzamam-ul-Haq (chief selector) to seek advice in the player development process.

Chairman Management Committee, in the near future, is also looking to engage with other former players, which may include Umar Gul, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq, to seek their opinion over the development process of the current players.

Mr Zaka Ashraf emphasised on the Board’s focus towards engaging the expertise of former players, who have represented Pakistan in various capacities, to help groom players as specialised batters, spinners and fast bowlers. In future, the National Cricket Academy plans to organise a specialised camp with top talent from the domestic circuit. The primary goal of this camp is to nurture these players and make them ready for the international stage, in an attempt to bridge the gap between domestic and international cricket.

Zaka Ashraf: “These players have served Pakistan at the highest stage and have a treasure of experience under their belts. We hope to utilise their expertise to help ensure our players are developed well in all aspects of the game. In this way, we hope we can produce players in all departments of the game that can serve Pakistan in the future.”

Zaka Ashraf always promoted culture of friendship and favoritism.

In the cricket board he is appointing individuals with influential connections and a similar pattern is hapening within the cricket team too.

In the wake of the recent defeats, PCB chief Zaka Ashraf is set to meet former Pakistan cricketers and discuss over possible measures to improve the situation and lay a roadmap for the future.

Ashraf recently met chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq and former players Mohammad Yousuf and Aaqib Javed.

He now plans to meet Wasim Akram, Waqar Younis, Saqlain Mushtaq, and Umar Gul to take their suggestions and insights as they hold immense experience.

The PCB released a press release updating the fans about the same and wrote, “Chairman Management Committee, shortly, is also looking to engage with other former players, which may include Umar Gul, Waqar Younis, Wasim Akram and Saqlain Mushtaq, to seek their opinion over the development process of the current players.”

PCB Management Committee Chairman Mr Zaka Ashraf met Sarfaraz Ahmed and Shanawaz Dahani at the Pakistan cricket headquarters in Lahore.

The PCB Chairman congratulated Karachi Whites for winning the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2023-24 and hailed the leadership qualities of their captain Sarfaraz Ahmed while also appreciating the performance of fast bowler Shahnawaz Dahani.

Mr Zaka Ashraf also reaffirmed PCB's commitment to continue to work for the players' well-being and support of regional cricket.

Meeting Sarfaraz Ahmed in the middle of the World Cup - was this his idea of sending a signal to Babar?

This guy is a leech and part of the status quo Ramiz despite his idiosyncrasies was actually better than him, Tait was bowling coach and Hayden as Consultant were a breath of fresh air than the expired Micky and Morkel choker

I believe the early part of the streak may have been due to nefarious activities which has created this hoodoo.
Why would we feel anything? If your players are so greedy that they will drop a match on purpose, that too in a WC, it's on them.
But somehow its a typical trait of Pakistani to look for other reasons rather then accepting that there team was not good on the day.

Zaka seems to be all over the place with his decision-making.

Bringing in some people who should be nowhere near Pakistan cricket.

This will not end well.

Mickey and Morkel and the revolutionary idea of part time coaches was Sethi's masterstroke. Nevertheless, Zaka's masterplans (lack of) are going to come into play after the wc. The announcement of contracts and the apparent leaking of Babar's removal after the second wc game is only the start of his ineptness.

And this is just during the World Cup.

Like this from Afridi. He has never been shy to hit back at the higher ups in public. You may have differences with him on his cricketing opinions but Pakistani cricketers need to show such spine to dispel the thugs running PCB for eons. Zaka for his polite demeanour on screen is a venomous pest who has no business running PCB. His failure of a first tenure a decade back should have been enough to not appoint him.

Huge fan of Afridi, but he’d never use these words for Sethi.

If Sethi tries to use his influence to silence Afridi, he will use similar words for him. Sethi uses different approach to get on good side of his favorite players by using sugary praises.

Seems Zaka was keen to invite Lala after being on the wrong end of some criticism from Lala.

Probably tried to massage the ego of Lala just to get on his good side.

Desperate stuff really.
