What's new

The Zaka Ashraf reign has begun with a lot of fanfare - But will it yield positive results for the PCB?

I'm hearing that Zaka has asked Lala for another meeting.

I wonder if a job will be offered at the next meeting to Afridi.

Chairman of the PCB Management Committee Zaka Ashraf has lauded Fakhar Zaman's outstanding innings of 126 not out in Pakistan's victory over New Zealand in the ICC World Cup match in Bengaluru.

In a telephone conversation with Fakhar Zaman, Mr Zaka Ashraf praised his exceptional performance. In recognition of his stellar effort, Chairman of the PCB Management Committee has announced a reward of PKR 1 million for Fakhar.

Mr Zaka Ashraf extended his best wishes to Fakhar Zaman and the entire Pakistan team for their upcoming fixtures and expressed optimism about witnessing similar performances and success in the future.

PCB denies news of extension to Management Committee

Lahore, 4 November 2023:

The Pakistan Cricket Board strongly denies any news being circulated on the media regarding the extension being provided to the Management Committee.

The appointment or extension of Management Committee is a prerogative of the Prime Minister, who is also the patron of the PCB and he will make the decision in due course.

Someone needs to ask this bhuttolicker why Pakistan didn’t have a spin bowling for a WC held in spin friendly conditions.

PPP not just destroying Sindh but the last sport that Pakistan has left.

Bro Mr Ashraf is not a cricket expert. He is an administrator

He trusted the so called cricket experts (the chair of selectors and the captain) for their input. He hasn’t been with the team for a year or so to know where they truly stand

It’s the trust he had in these two that has let the nation down. Yes he could have been firm signing off the squad, but how could he when he was just appointed chairman a week before?

His biggest mistake was bringing Inzi back as CS.

He’s too political for me, just like all the previous Chairmans. But this guy takes it to the next level.

Too busy calling back the media manager just so Kalson gets another night out at a casino.

As soon as he was appointed Chairman, rumours spread that he was keen on replacing the entire coaching staff, he probably was but was pressured into not doing it, but why was he not keen on adding people into the set up.

I must admit that the card he played with Pakistan's foreign coaching staff was master full. Apparently Mickey, Bradburn and Puttick have signed contracts which have specified that in the event these people are let go by the PCB, the PCB will have to pay them 5-6 months salary as severance but obviously they will not be entitled to any severance if they resign.

Zaka met Mickey and the Foreign Coaching staff very warmly and even listened to their feedback about the WC very patiently. However at the end he gave the coaching staff his piece of mind and told them in very unkind words that he was not happy with their performance and the performance of the team and therefore the PCB had now decided to reassign them at the NCA for the remainder of their tenure and they will no longer be working with the national team.

Mickey was not happy and he started to protest i.e. he is not interested in any other role in Pakistan Cricket, if you don't have any confidence in us, then just let us go, Zaka then told him him to keep quiet, he is chairing this meeting and then got up saying this meeting is over and he has another commitment.

Lol let's see how much love the likes of Mickey, Bradburn, Puttick have for Pakistan Cricket if they are willing to work at the NCA.

It was the same story with Zaka's meeting with Babar when he met him warmly and allowed Babar to explain himself and the reason for the team not doing well. By the end Zaka to expressed his displeasure with Babar and told him that the PCB was replacing him as captain in the ODI, T20 team but would retain him as test captain. Babar protested saying either appoint me as captain in all formats or none but Zaka wasn't budging and Babar realized he is not going to get his way this time.

If only Zaka had shown this hard no nonsense stance with the team management before the WC and had insisted on axing the likes of Shadab, Nawaz.

Pakistan cricket chief Zaka Ashraf to attend ICC meeting in Ahmedabad on Saturday, to watch WC final next day

Pakistan Cricket Management Committee chairman Zaka Ashraf has landed in India to attend the ICC Executive Board meeting to be held in Ahmedabad on Saturday.

Zaka left for Ahmedabad with chief operating officer Salman Nasser and they will also watch the World Cup final on Sunday.

The ICC EB meeting is expected to review the conduct of the World Cup, the revenue collection from the showpiece and spectator attendance. It will also discuss the future of 50-over cricket and the hosting of the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in 2025, according to PCB sources.

Zaka had earlier visited Ahmedabad to watch the high-profile Pakistan vs India match on October 14. India had won the match by seven wickets.

Pakistan had failed to qualify for the semifinals of the World Cup, which led to Babar Azam quitting captaincy on Wednesday.

Looks like Wahab Riaz is the new Chief Selector, what happened to Tauseef Ahmed?

Wahab Road is a sports ministers, PSL player and a chief selector…lol

I'm hearing that he's offered Sohail Tanvir a job as the junior chief selector.

Zaka Ashraf visited India during that indo-pak Clash as well and India won that one. Is he lucky for the Indian team as he is again going to watch the final match of India vs Australia?

This is incompetence from the Caretaker Govt. How do they expect anyone to run the PCB if they can't make day to day decisions? Either give Zaka the powers he needs for the next 2-3 months or replace him with someone you trust but the PCB cannot be in limbo and cannot be powerless in front of the players during this time period.

Pointless making any major changes, Sethi will be back after the elections and he’ll reverse everything Zaka does.

As far as I know, as per Governament directives they have no authority to advertise. How come they advertise this.?

2.4 million per month that's insane, more than any job in Pakistan, definitely ridiculous waste of resources by PCB

PM Kakar holds meeting with PCB Chairman Management Committee

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar on Monday met with Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Management Committee Mr Zaka Ashraf.

During the meeting, Prime Minister Kakar appreciated the measures undertaken by the PCB management committee and expressed his support. He also urged the Chairman Management Committee to expand PCB’s outreach to remote regions of the country.

PM Kakar also expressed support for the organisation of the ninth edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL). Addressing concerns about potential scheduling clashes with election day, he said adjustments to the HBL PSL matches should be made to prevent any interference with the voting process.

Emphasising the significance of fostering stronger bonds with other cricket boards, PM Kakar commended PCB’s efforts and stressed the importance of enhancing relations with boards like Cricket Australia (CA) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

PM Kakar urged the PCB to collaborate closely with stakeholders and security agencies in preparation for the successful hosting of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan. He reiterated the government's support for the PCB's initiatives aimed at fostering cricket across all levels within the country.

When Zaka Ashraf is leading the cricket board, then these results are deserving.

The caretaker federal government on Saturday prohibited the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) from advancing with the sale of media rights, requiring approval for every major decision.

The PCB’s administrative committee is limited to handling day-to-day matters, causing disruptions in crucial dealings due to the inability to make significant decisions promptly.

The government intervention was brought to light in the form of a letter to the board members, demanding prior approval before initiating any important actions.

The fear of potential delays instilled restlessness within the board, as each decision might now necessitate approval from the Prime Minister.

The successful sale of media rights for the vital Pakistan Super League (PSL) has faced obstacles due to the government expressing reservations over long-term agreements.

The PCB has been directed to focus on short-term contracts, where it retains the authority, as the government raises concerns about expansive commitments.

To resume activities related to the PSL, including negotiations with all available channels, the board must now seek permission. This has resulted in the suspension of 7 to 8 tenders related to league proceedings. The prolonged delay has heightened concerns about potential reductions in PSL media rights’ value.

Challenges in the way of PSL 9 schedule:

The board, responsible for estimating technical and financial bids initially, is now hindered due to the government’s stringent approval process. The uncertain situation has also halted the execution of the PSL 9 schedule, as the cricket board insists that the finalization can only occur after the successful sale of media rights.

It is noteworthy that the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expects revenue ranging from 8 to 10 billion rupees through the sale of media rights for both the Pakistan Super League (PSL) and international cricket.

At what point does this become interference by a government in Cricket Board affairs?

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) management committee chairman Zaka Ashraf on Sunday postponed the Australia tour due to the delay in the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) bidding.

Earlier, it was reported that Ashraf was expected to touchdown today.

Sources had divulged that Ashraf will be accompanied by Chief Operating Officer (COO) Salman Naseer. During his visit to Australia, Ashraf will hold meetings with Cricket Australia officials.

The PCB chief was also expected to witness the Boxing Day Test between Australia and Pakistan, which will begin on December 26 (Tuesday).

The senator has raised valid questions about Zaka's lack of experience in cricket and the fact that cricket is just his hobby. How can he be the chairman of a cricket board? Meanwhile, the speaker of the house did not seem serious about it and appeared annoyed by these honest questions from the senator. A caretaker minister responded that the previous PDM government appointed Zaka as chairman of the PCB, not this caretaker government.

What is the point of PCB Chairman boarding a business class flight from PCB funds to watch Pakistan team play in Australia?
Is that the job description for PCB Chairman? Does he not have bigger issues to deal with in Pakistan Cricket?

KP Sports Minister meets the Chairman of PCB Management Committee

Lahore, 11 January 2024:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Caretaker Minister for Sports, Youth Affairs and Science and Information Technology Dr Najeebullah Marwat visited PCB’s headquarters Gaddafi Stadium on Wednesday afternoon and met Chairman of the PCB Management Committee Mr Zaka Ashraf.

Chairman PCB Management Committee, Mr. Zaka Ashraf: “I had a fruitful meeting with the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa minister and the PCB have requested the provincial government for the custody of the historic Arbab Niaz and Hayatabad stadiums and other grounds in the region.

This initiative will not only help PCB to provide advanced facilities for our cricketers but also contribute to the overall development of cricket in the region.”

IPC consults law ministry for legal opinion on Zaka's authority to form BoGs

The Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) has opted to seek legal counsel from the Law Ministry before seeking approval from the caretaker Prime Minister, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, regarding the formation of the Board of Governors (BoGs) by Zaka Ashraf.

The BoGs, constituting the electoral college, are responsible for electing the PCB chairman for a three-year term.

A comprehensive meeting on this matter occurred in Islamabad on Wednesday between Federal Minister for IPC, Fawad Hasan Fawad, and Zaka Ashraf. During the meeting, Zaka pointed out that, according to Article 38 of the PCB Constitution, the IMC had the authority to establish the BoGs. Despite Zaka's plan to hold a crucial IMC meeting in Karachi to form the BoG, the IPC Ministry prohibited the meeting, summoning him to Islamabad for discussions.

Instead of adhering to the PCB constitution, Fawad decided to seek advice from the Law Ministry, potentially delaying the IPC Ministry's conclusion by a week. The IMC's three-month extended tenure is set to conclude on February 4.

If the Law Ministry advises following Article 38, Zaka may complete his tenure. However, the IPC Ministry may resist allowing him to form the BoGs, potentially leading to the formation of a new IMC after February 4. Zaka is obligated to adhere to instructions from the IPC Ministry, managing only the day-to-day workings of the PCB while major functions remain halted.

Name me one positive thing this administration has brought?

When Zaka and co. will be held accountable?

You need people who understand the game, running cricket in Pakistan.

The day political appointments stop, will be the day that Pakistan cricket improves.

And that is never coming as long as the mafia use the PCB for back scratching

This individual is only resigning because he knew he won't be getting any extension and he is a toothless chairman given that the IPL clipped his powers. Each and every decision he made needs to be reviewed and reversed if necessary especially the numerous bookings, appointments he made inside the PCB to please the PPP.
