"They have been absolutely pathetic away from home" : Gambhir questions Australia’s #1 Test ranking

India’s reign at the top of the ICC Test Rankings came to an end after 42 months earlier this month, after the ICC announced their latest rankings, in which they removed the points accumulated by the teams in the 2016-17 season. Tim Paine-led Australia climbed over India to claim the top spot, while the Virat Kohli-led side slipped to the 3rd position with New Zealand taking the 2nd spot. But former India batsman Gautam Gambhir is not convinced by the ICC Rankings.

Speaking on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected chat show, Gambhir took a dig at the ICC World Test Championships points system and said: “No, I am not surprised (India slipping to No. 3). I don’t believe in points and ranking system. Probably the worst was there in the World Test Championship... that you win the same points when you win a Test match away from home. That’s ridiculous.”

Gambhir further said that India have been the most competitive side in Test cricket over the past few years.’ “Yes, absolutely. 100 percent (India had been the most competitive side). If you have to see from the overall impact point of view, India have lost series away from home but won against Australia. Hands down, they have been the most competitive side. They won a Test in South Africa, won a Test match in England... not many countries have done that,” he said.

Gambhir further added that Australia have not been the best when travelling over the past few years. “For me, India should be there (No. 1) because Australia... I have serious doubts On what front have you given Australia the No. 1 Test ranking?

“They have been absolutely pathetic away from home, especially in the sub-continent,” he said.

Speaking on BCCI’s plans on going into quarantine upon reaching Australia to ensure the bilateral series goes ahead, Gambhir said: “Good on the BCCI. Fabulous. This is a very, very positive sign. They are probably looking at the bigger picture, it will change the mood of the country. Winning the series is a different thing, it’s very important but it will probably change the mood of both the countries as well. Not only India but probably for Australia.”

“When BCCI is there... they are probably the richest board they have got to be statesman as well. If India are to Australia, then I have a lot of respect for the BCCI,” he added.

I don't agree with what Gambhir has said here and certainly believe that Australia are the deserving no.1 team right now but your post makes zero sense. Do you think Eng and NZ are the only places where Test cricket is played other than Ind and Aus ?

Or are you one of those self deprecating SC fans who think that Asian tests don't matter much ?

India

Lost 4-0 in Eng 2011.
Lost 4-0 in Aus 2011-12.
Lost 1-0 in SA 2013.
Lost 1-0 in NZ 2014.
Lost 3-1 in Eng 2014.
Lost 2-0 in Aus 2014-15.
Lost 2-1 in SA 2018.
Lost 4-1 in Eng 2018.
Won 2-1 in Aus 2018-19.
Lost 2-0 in NZ 2020.

Lost 9 of their last 10 Test series in SENA. And that series was when Warner and Smith were absent.

Gambhir, easy target for Aussie trolls. He has clearly been sledged pretty bad by them in his playing days

Aus go to the top of the Test rankings having only won 4 of their last 9 Test series:
Won 3-0 vs NZ 019-20.
Won 2-0 vs Pak 019.
Drew 2-2 in Eng 019.
Won 2-0 vs SL 019.
Lost 2-1 vs Ind 018-19.
Lost 1-0 in UAE vs PK 018.
Lost 3-1 in SA 018.
Won 4-0 vs Eng 017-18.
Drew 1-1 in BD 017.

Mmmmmm.

England 2 Australia 2
England 4 India 1

New Zealand 0 Australia 2
New Zealand 2 India 0

Australia in England and NZ
Won 4 Lost 2

India in England and NZ
Won 1 Lost 6

So who is rubbish away again?

Aus 0-3 in SL, worst Lankan team in history
Aus 1-1 in Ban
Not to forget the record breaking defeats in UAE
So yeah Australia is rubbish outside SENA.

India

Lost 2-0 in Aus 2014-15.
Lost 2-1 in SA 2018.

Won 2-1 in Aus 2018-19.
Lost 2-0 in NZ 2020.

If you are going to go so back in time Australia's record in Asia won't make for good reading. There was a stretch where they lost 8/10 tests (no win) in India despite winning 9 tosses. And we know what happened to them in UAE.

Rankings take into account only the last 4 years.

What Gambhir said holds true for all teams, nobody can play well away from the comforts of home these days. This is an era of HTBs and the HTB that can minimize damage outside will become number one. The last legit number one was South Africa under Smith. Since then we have seen only first among equals.

Australia have won the same number of series in Asia in the last decade as India in SENA. And that too after playing half of those series' against teams ranked in the bottom half of the Test rankings.

Aus won a Test in Ind in 2017. Won a Test in BD in 2017. Drew a Test in UAE 2018. Improved results in Asia in recent trips after losing 3-0 in SL 2016.

Gambhir is doing just publicity to keep himself popular. He is a politician afterall. He says the team that does well away is better and then says Australia are pathetic away.

IMO, whoever is the no.1 ranked team deserves the no.1. It was India for 3 years, Pakistan for a few months and now it's Australia, everyone needs to be respected.

Hahahah how the tables have turned :yk

Agree with Gomzi bro, this Aussie team are a punching bag in Asia. India and Pakistan beat them so bad it's not even funny.

Gambhir is right. Australia have not won an away test series since 2015/16, where they beat New Zealand 2-0 in NZ.

Australia deserve to be number 1. Stop crying.

As I said above, a shocking fact is that Aus have not won an away test series since 2015/16. Obviously it's all math calculations so we can't argue against Aus's no. 1 ranking but it is a bit surprising.

India also didn't do too well in SENA countries. They lost in South Africa, England, and NZ.

All teams are now struggling in away tours (including India and Australia).

Mmmmmm.

England 2 Australia 2
England 4 India 1

New Zealand 0 Australia 2
New Zealand 2 India 0

Australia in England and NZ
Won 4 Lost 2

India in England and NZ
Won 1 Lost 6

So who is rubbish away again?

record in Asia?

it's easier to win in SENA if you are part of SENA continents. So they need to win in Asia not SENA.

They are lucky they don't face india away this time. Would have been a bloodbath.

basically australia lost against 3 of the 4 best nations in Asia and drew one.

india won vs australia and lost to 3 others. No difference really except india actually came close to beating south africa.

australia faced weaker teams who are not on the level of india in Asia and still lost.

Doesn't matter. They play a lot of away cricket and they only have to be better than the rest. It would be a travesty if either England or SA get to the top since they play a high proportion of matches at home. All other teams play a fair share home and away.

All top teams are good at home and suck away. When India get next cycle of home series we will be back to #1.

india don't lose away if they win the toss. Virat's record is unblemished when he wins the toss. At home they won't lose at all regardless of the toss outcome.

Loss is a loss, no point making excuses. It's and buts don't matter in any sport. If you start going this route there will be no end, then people will question Indians victory in Australia or others can say the opposition captain wins if he wins toss.

Can't have it that way, we losr fair and square. Leta move ahead and prepare for next series.

I don't think the results of the rankings go that far back.

Rankings don't consider home and away, so generally the teams that are more dominant at home do get that advantage. They can get to no.1 even by performing mediocre away while teams that are not so dominant at home will have to win good enough away as well to reach top spot.
