Musharraf came to power in equally precarious circumstances in 1999 where the state of the economy was in complete collapse where our External Debts were $39 billion and the country had only $400 million left in Foreign Exchange Reserves. Back then some could argue that the situation was even worse because Pakistan was completely isolated and not in anyone's attention.

But Musharraf bought in highly qualified technocrats and made sure that the right man was appointed to the right post. The economy picked up and action was being taken against the corrupt.

Sadly he made compromises in efforts to politically legitimize himself with certain politicians and sadly the NRO which even he admits now was a huge blunder has severely damaged the economy and the country.

I believe Imran Khan has taken on board some ministers and officials during Musharraf's time i.e. Ishrat Hussain, Dr Atta Ur Rehman, Zubeida Jalal, Abdul Razzaq Dawood e.t.c.

If Musharraf could achieve Economic growth and progress during his tenure and uplift the economy from the loot maar of PPP and PML-N, why can't Imran Khan do it with the right intentions?

Or are the two situations and time periods completely different? I believe there is no harm in Imran Khan reversing the appointment of certain ministers and appointing people with experience if it is in the best interests of the nation.

Musharraf's period before NRO was excellent for Pakistan. Some institutions like media, banking, higher education, etc really flourished in his time. Then, for the first time ever, Karachi saw some good quality development work getting completed.

1. Don't sell your sovereignty to a world power for a fast buck.

It is weird to see people bashing PTI and Imran Khan for their performance in the first six months.

While Pakistanis have beared the ‘loot-maar’ of PPP and PML-N for twenty years.

Impatience by the population will not help Imran’s tenure either.

It takes time to reap the fruits.

And yes PTI have made some blunders but still give them a chance to give their shot to regain Pakistan’s lost dignity.

Nothing, really. Only two three things to do
1 - bring all major mosques under government control to monitor and influence the content shared by the imams
2 - land reform at all costs
3 - permanently uproot political dynasties
4 - co-opt the military establishment as an equally responsible for the health of the economy
5 - zero tolerance for annoying the neighbors

It’s difficult to gauge how the public really feels since political opinion polling is still rudimentary. If you follow social media or tv you’d think the house is on fire.
I think the best thing that imran and his party can do is to establish a form of illiberal democracy with the help of the military establishment. Which means using the judiciary and press to harass or limit frivolous or bad faith opposition to policy. And then to work out what are the two or three things we are going to do get the economy and controlling militancy and land reforms with micro loans on track and then locking that policy and it’s decision making through judiciary and parliamentary mechanisms that all future governments be it the PTI or any other have no way of deviating from it.

The biggest diff between IK era and Mushy era is that IK has only had a few bloody months.

Be patient guys.

On Social Media i am seeing loads of vultures baying for Asad Umar's blood. My question is that if fixing the Pakistani economy right now is easy, then what are the suggestions that Pakistan's top economists would make to implement corrective measures which Asad Umar isn't doing right now?
